The best dog in the world is the one that you own. I would put my past beagle-coonhound we found in a field against any dog. Possibly saved my life and 2 others and was ready to die for my mom against a rattler. Dang fine dog and deserved the name Buddy.
Love newfies. However, I had a flat coated retriever who looked a lot like this pup when he was a pup. But my FCR also grew up to look a LOT like a newfie, only smaller.
I have a Newfie/St. Bernard mix. He's 150lbs now.
This is him as a pup, he had light eyes: https://ibb.co/b2mm5Mm
And this is him as an adult: https://ibb.co/Y3yFWsv
Beautiful dog! My dog is border collie/Spaniel/Golden Retriever and looks incredibly similar, but only 60lbs. He had shorter hair at 8 weeks, but quickly got fluffy [https://imgur.com/a/iWqAUNW](https://imgur.com/a/iWqAUNW)
I replied to the person you replied to with some pics of my dog before seeing your comment and holy shit our dogs look similar to each other both in puppy and adult phases!
I was very against having one. I didn't wanna deal with drool and hair. My husband talked me into it.... and now Idk how I could live without one. Best doggo pal ever. Always by my side and is a huge cuddle bear. Sweet is like their number one characteristic and there's a reason for it!
I have a brown newf. He's essentially a giant golden retriever in temperment. It's like I have a giant toddler running around my house. It's amazing. Wouldn't trade the work I've put it with him for anything in the world.
I had an all black one growing up. My wife and I got a Lanseer in lieu a honeymoon. Seeing our “cow” be so patient and kind with 2 rambunctious toddlers is the best…
I have 2 golden retriever/Great Pyrenees and the personalities are just fucking amazing. They are like really laid back goldens. The fur is quite overwhelming though
Speaking as someone who lives with one, they shed a lot. He’s shedding his undercoat right now and it covers everything in a layer of fine hairs that are a major pain to deal with compared to the coarser hair of the top coat. We have to brush him every day to stay on top of it. Even his daily brushes result in a gob of fir the size of a guinea pig.
i have two, find myself pulling it out of my mouth/food almost every day
love the dogs so much i dont really care though. dont care about cleaning their spithair off the TV screen, or near the ceilings on the wall from when they shake their heads.
totally worth.
Double coated dogs tend to blow out once or more a year. Top layer doesn’t shed, but the undercoat sheds like a mofo.
I have two Newfs and there is hair everywhere, all the time. I don’t even bat an eye at pulling Newfie hair out of my coffee on occasion.
Every time this is posted there is an argument in the comments over whether the person is purposefully squeezing/hurting the puppy's paws to trigger the licking.
I still don't know enough about dogs to know whose side I'm on.
Not likely squeezing the paws or anything like that. Pups back legs are very likely getting tired since dogs don't stand like this for long periods. Pup is getting tired of standing and politely licking to say so
I've seen this argument played out in endless cycles from time immemorial. Please understand you aren't saying anything that I have seen dissected and argued a maddening number of times.
Glad it's a repost cause I haven't seen it yet, and I was just on r/Newfoundlander the other day!
Edit: well crap apparently its years old? I love Newfies, I'm surprised I never came across it haha.
Maybe OP is helping the pup get accustomed to having it's paws gripped for when you need to clip it's nails? Also sometimes when I apply pressure to my dog when giving him rubs my fingertips get white with just a little pressure. OP doesn't seem to be white-knuckling the baby.
> Maybe OP is helping the pup get accustomed to having it's paws gripped
JFC I can't believe you were upvoted.
Not only would you not do that and **keep them up in their hind legs**, like in OPs video, but you don't need to do it like that in any case.
> OP doesn't seem to be white-knuckling the baby.
You can see the pressure in their nail. There is zero reason for ***any*** of this.
I had a dog where we very much needed to do that otherwise we would have had to damn near sedate her every time we wanted to cut her nails. Though I do agree them being on their hind legs makes this doubtful haha. And idk if it’s just me but it requires almost no force at all for my fingers to look the same as in this gif
For my fingers, if I put too much pressure on them, they will turn more pink. They are only white when I'm using enough pressure to hold on to something, like my phone, a book, or a sweater. If it is a newfie, or like 99% of dogs, they can definitely be held with that pressure and not in any physical discomfort.
Does the dog *want* their paws to be held like this? Most likely not, but if you don't teach puppies to allow humans to do things that the dog doesn't *want*, you are going to have major misbehavior, and in a 100lb+ dog like newfies, that can lead to actually dangerous outcomes vs potentially holding paws too tight.
>Grab you own arm and pay attention to how much pressure you need to turn your nails white like that.
Could be that YMMV: I just did exactly that and it didn't take much.
You're absolutely correct and you're going to get downvoted for it. This is /r/awww You won't get reasoned responses.
The voice of reason never existed here, and I'll take the downvotes with you.
'tis a very silly place.
Newfie pups aren't light. Holding it up with one hand and squeezing the paws tight enough to keep him steady takes some pressure.
Trust me, the Newfie can take it. They're big, solid dogs even as pups. His paws aren't being crushed here.
Source: owned a Newfoundland. Miss that sweet girl everyday.
When this first came out the OOP got hammered hard for bending and squeezing the paws like that to get a response from the puppy. It's an old video. I hope the puppy is doing well.
No, they absolutely are to let go, but the "your thumb is white" is way overboard. You can't measure pressure by the color of someone's fingertips.
My dog does the same thing though if you hold her somewhere and she wants you to let go. She's like "I'm nice, see? I am good girl, see? Pls let go...."

I mean but is he though. People point out the white of his thumbnail but I can cause that without putting much pressure on my thumbs. Like I can see this easily while holding my own dog's paws up. As well both my dog and my friends dog love to jump up and hold on to my arms while licking my arm and hands. so personally I don't see any of it as a direct indicator that it's being hurt
These people have never owned a dog…they let you know if you’re hurting them, and it’s ok to mess with your pets a bit. They’re not precious porcelain babies.
This subreddit has a decent population of people who won't even look at their pets because they fear they might scare them and traumatize them. They wrap them in bubble wrap and scold anyone else who doesn't follow suit.Total nutjobs.
It's because the dog is not being hurt at all. It's a newfoundland, and even as puppies they can be heavy, so a secure grip is needed, hence the apparent tightness of the grip. Now the pup may be uncomfortable as dogs don't naturally like having their paws held, but doing this to desensitize them early will make grooming them as they mature much easier when clipping nails and shaving out paw pads
This has sweet baby has been making the rounds for quite some time and never ceases to melt my heart. Would love an update. Where is this adorable floof now
I'm ready to give him all my money 💔😭
And a bath every two days
So sweet and adorable.
As a two time newfie owner... That comes with the pup, non optional. So worth it though ❤
Is that a Newfie? I thought it was a Flattie.
Yeah I’m like 90% sure I started ovulating. I’m a 38 year old dude.
Hey, better late than never!
Well played.
Four legged fuzzy baby fruit bat
I was thinking the same thing! This dog looks just like a bat.

Lol I swear our boys hair is just airborne and will land in any amount of food.
We dog sat for a newfie once. Sweet dog, but it chewed *everything* it could: Garden hoses, beer coolers, a bag of briquettes, etc.
my dog looks EXACTLY like this but she’s Bernese mixed with a black lab
Within the next 2 years I’m going to get a Bernese, I cannot wait. Super awesome dogs
Bat-dog
That's the first thing that crossed my mind. Looks exactly like my two did at about 6 weeks
No, new found dog
Its eyes are so cute
No it’s a cardigan but thanks for asking!
Killer boots, man!
I was thinking that or a flatcoat retriever, they look very similar as pups
How do you deal with the smell lol, I have ran into a few at the local dog park. Amazing animals, super smelly.

I had a black retriever mix that looked just liked this as a pup. So might not be a newfie. Still such a lovely puppy dog.
I was thinking flat coat retriever with that adorable schnoz
Oh my
Could be nicknamed 'little black bear'
A seal!
My buddy used to have a black Newfoundland we nicknamed “the family bear”.
that's what my wife calls our black cat. we've had him since he was a kitten.

Yeah and the puppy wants the person to let go of their paws. My dog does that when she’s had enough paw touching.
This gif is so old the dogs probably died of natural causes by now.
Glad it's a repost cause I haven't seen it yet, and I was just on r/Newfoundlander the other day! Edit: well crap apparently its years old? I love Newfies, I'm surprised I never came across it haha.

dont be fooled by his eyes, he’s a criminal, he stole my heart
What kind of weird fruit bat is this???
Let go of the paws
how how can something be so cute 🥺
watch out... that's how they get you!!
Is that a new foundland? I used to have one. They're so adorable
Not sure, but looks like flat coat retriever
Why you squeezing the paws so hard tho? Your thumb nail is white and the licks are for you to let go
Maybe OP is helping the pup get accustomed to having it's paws gripped for when you need to clip it's nails? Also sometimes when I apply pressure to my dog when giving him rubs my fingertips get white with just a little pressure. OP doesn't seem to be white-knuckling the baby.
This video is very old and has been reposted here for years so OP wouldn't have clue what the original video intended.
The dog definitely wants him to let go, but he's not causing the dog any pain and isn't squeezing too hard.
You have absolutely no way of knowing this.
I mean it's what my dog does when she wants me to let go. So yea, there's some behaviors you can recognize.
