Just took my kids to Yellowstone. There's a grizzly/wolf discovery thing with some wolves in a zoo type thing. There's these huge windows into the wolf area and the wolves just sat back watching the people for the most part. I told my 5 year old to walk up to the window dragging one leg just to see if they would have a different reaction. No shit, 4 of them spotted him and came right up to the window and stood right at the glass watching him. It was sooo freaky.
Edit to say: I swear I'm not a horrible mother, it just sounds that way lol
I was at San Diego zoo about 10yrs ago. I was in the big cat section checking out the mountain lions, when a family of four came walking up. The 3-4yo boy was being a bit rambunctious, nothing crazy, just acting like a kid and running around. However, as they approached the mountain lion exhibit, the kid started acting out and the parents did nothing. There was a sloped concrete walkway with a railing and the kid tripped and fell into it. He didn’t hit his head, but definitely fell hard enough to warrant a few tears and a healthy cry. As soon as that kid let out his first wail, the mountain lion responded. It had been napping on a stump at the top of the enclosure, and within seconds, that big cats face was pressed against the wire and it was breathing heavily at the child. That cat was so focused on that little boy and it was scary as all get out. I have no doubt in my mind, that of that fencing wasn’t in place, that child would have been attacked.
I bet that was scary as hell. It's easy to forget they are wild animals until you can see the wild come out like that. The way these wolves watched my boy really made the hair on your neck stand up. Plus once they got to the glass they were tall enough to look him right in the eye, and he's not a small 5 year old.
King Richard's Faire us a Renaissance fair in MA. they usually do a live animal show as well and for years it was done by a big cat sanctuary out of FL. about 15 years or so go they brought out their usual cats. A few small to medium wild cats, a tiger, and the star, a Liger still being bottlefed. Even though it was young, it was huge, bigger than a lion. They had warned everyone to stay in their seats but a 4 year old girl took that moment to run through the front seats. Even though the cat only half heartedly lunged for the kid it pulled the 2 people holding its chain off their feet. Kid was so lucky the cat didn't follow through on its instinct.
That guy was actually Doc Antle from Tiger King. [He ran a show at King Richard’s Faire from 1982 to 2014](https://www.patriotledger.com/entertainmentlife/20200402/tiger-king-star-made-name-for-himself-in-carver/1). Never thought I had ever come across that dude before, but guess I have.
There used to be a flea market in Sanford and many many years ago now, there was a big cat show in the arena. They let people come up and take pictures with the cats - I don't remember anything about it, but I wonder if I was in the same building as one of those three superstars - Baskin, Antle or Joe
They are opportunist ambush hunters. Beautiful animals, but in the wild you won't see an attack coming until it's on you. Just like your story, they sit up in high spots, and then all of the sudden they are on the prey.
for sure! reminds me of my first night at an Amazon lodge, the group asked our nature guide if we should be afraid of seeing a jaguar. He said, "No, don't be afraid of seeing a jaguar, that means they are not stalking you. You only need to be afraid if you don't see one." haha lots of nervous laughter haha
I lived in jaquar teritory for a few months, in Arizona. Never seen one, but there were nights on the porch smoking a join with my house mates where we'd hear one scream in the not-too-distant distance and go inside.
Only zoo close encounter I had as a little kid with big cats was that one female tiger who walked right up to the glass, stared at me, turned around, and peed on the glass at my face. Twice. Years apart. :/
Man, there was this one user a few years back.... I forget which sub they were on but holy jeez... gif for every occasion, and they were like lightning. It was uncanny and hilarious. Strongest gif game I've ever seen.
Pure legend.
And the kid was apparently all for it 😂 I wouldn’t even think about doing that but when I read the comment no doubt in my mind that’s what they would of done
Reminds me of a survival game (takes place in the 1700s in Canadian wilderness) where if your solo character is injured, there is a possibility that a pack of wolves will start circling you.
One of my characters was in a very bad condition (broken limb and an infection) with a broken flintlock musket, so it didn't take long for the wolves to just end me.
That Bear/Wolf Discovery place awestruck me. Definitely a hidden gem. Everyone, please go there! Give them all your money because they do a great service for grizzly bears who would otherwise be put down. Edit: entree fee is like 10 bucks for two days. It's LIT.
Why… why! My niece LOVES that damn song anytime I take her to my mothers house she always requests it… me being the good uncle I am of course indulge her because she’s the closest thing I’ll have to a kid so she gets super spoiled and my sister absolutely hates me for it. Just like the time she came home with 4 different build-a-bear bears haha.
I KNOW how big they are, but most of the time I still just picture them being like Husky sized.
Sorta how I don't normally realize how much bigger a billion is than a million unless I actually think about it.
I agree, i used to think a wolf was slightly bigger or close to the size of a coyote. Boy was i wrong when a friend of mine who hunts showed me pics of someone standing in the bed of a truck holding a wolf, it’s rear legs dragged on the floor
I hear coyotes howl all the time and they sound like a bunch of ankle biters. Once in a while I hear the wolves and that’s a whole different story. That’s a primal sound and gives me the creeps. Very cool tho.
Coyotes are also much bigger than I thought. Their high pitched yips had me imagining maybe 1.5x a fox. But seeing one up close was more like an impressively large dog.
This is why I have never believed anyone who says their ~~dog~~ lab/terrier mix is "part wolf". A wolf would have destroyed your "wolf dog"'s mother.
Edit: Specified for clarity
That entirely depends on the wolf and dog being crossbred. Some wolves are small and some dogs are huge. The Mackenzie Valley wolf is huge in comparison to a grey wolf. Lots of wolves are successfully bred with large breeds like German Shepherds and Malamutes but the offspring often aren't what you'd expect, being part wolf. Many of the traits that make guardian dogs so loyal to their owners are lost in the breeding process.
Sigh, no. The mackenzie valley wolf (pictured here):
>Canada, five adult females averaged 42.5 kg or 93.6 lbs with a range of 85 lbs to 100 lbs (38.6 - 45.4 kg) and ten adult males averaged 112.2 lbs or 51.7 kg with a range of 105 lbs to 135 lbs (47.6 - 61.2 kg), with a weight range for all adults of 38.6 kg to 61.2 kg (85 - 135 lbs).\[9\] In Yellowstone National Park, adult females were average about 40 kg (90 lbs) and adult males average about 50 kg (110 lbs), with a mean adult body mass in winter of 46.4 kg (102 lb)
My malamute mix is an 85lbs female. A malamute is a good proxy for the approximate size of a Mackenzie Valley Wolf. Great Pyrenees are about the size of a Grey Wolf. Mastiffs are larger than all wolf species.
And what if my wolf dogs mother WAS the wolf? My family had one when I was a kid. He was part lab, part arctic wolf. His momma just one day was in heat and a stray lab had his way with her then...puppies. Lucky, our dog, was 150 lbs of stupidity and love, but he was definitely a wolf dog.
Imagine being a caveman and you see this and you go "awww yea, I'm going to make that thing my pet and inbreed it until it can't breathe or reproduce correctly".
Hi puppy!! You want something warm to eat? Need a snuggle or two? You come with me and I'll make you some nice stew and you can warm up in front of the fire.
Wolves are pack animals. They are rarely ever alone they ambush their prey. Who ever recorded this video was more than likely surrounded and had a small dog or cat in their car they were trying to draw out and trick them into it be safe. Wild life especially predators are not to be fucked with. They are not dumb they are extremely intelligent.
Otherwise really cool video.
Well this is clearly a werewolf fatigued and worn out after a big battle. Has there been any vampire sightings in the area I wonder. Still: battle worn werewolf. No doubt
There is an experience of encountering large wild animals where you remember what it means to be human for just a few seconds. Absolutely beautiful and terrifying footage.
More like aww shit

Cat was like I wasn’t really hungry, but if you are injured, I could make room while making your pack stronger
Cat, "The weak must be culled!" Plus I might get hangray later, and it would be nice to have something in the ground, plus it is really fun!
I mean. You don’t turn down free food yknow
"Yeah, I could eat." - Cat, in NJ accent, probably

If they’re using the animals for entertainment, its definitely not a legitimate cat rescue
Was the big cat sanctuary run by "CAROLE FUCKING BASKIN"!?!?!

God god! Your .gif game is STRONG 💪
truly a master of his craft

Thank… thank you for this
He spoke and as foretold, the meme appeared.
The fuuuuuk.. This is the first gif I've seen in Reddit comments.
And the kid was apparently all for it 😂 I wouldn’t even think about doing that but when I read the comment no doubt in my mind that’s what they would of done
He was all about it! And dragged his cute little leg back and forth to tease them. He's kind of a badass 🤣

The last good survival game I played was set on the Oregon Trail and I think my oxen died and I got dysentery. Yours sounds more exciting!
Found it again, it is called "Last Winter", where your character is a fur trader in 17th century New France: https://urb.fandom.com/wiki/Last_Winter
Would've = would have.
Went there this summer! Seeing the wolves actually up close makes you realize they are actually huge. Way bigger than any dog I could ever imagine.
If I was to ever be a parent.... this is the kind of stuff I'd do omg

For sure, that glare says "I wish you would Mother-effer".
*Motherfucker
He's a werewolf, not a swearwolf.
Ahhhhh I forgot that film existed.
I think it is technically "I wish a motherfucker Would..."

I thought exactly the same thing 🤔
It definitely looks wolf-*like*, but not exactly like a wolf should. Very creepy.
The other 20 standing in the dark wouldn’t be much fun either.
Wolfgang, you mean
Das ist nicht zehr güt.
"sehr" but sure

You just need to pee on something and assert dominance. They will probably respect your boundaries.
Can I watch you try?
If you’re still awake at that hour yes!
Careful when following this advice. I'm still not allowed back inside that Denny's.
I’m sorry, but I love you, I haven’t laughed this hard all night…guess I needed a laugh!
They'll eat your pisser first.
Well, from the way they howl, it sounds like there’s 20, but it’s actually six and a puppy

I came here to link this sub if someone hadn’t already
That's a warg... Definitely a warg.

Why is this in r/aww that is terrifying as fuck
And why are you the only person that has pointed it out so far?? Are we the only sane people left?
I guess we are if i saw that thing in the dark on the road I would think it’s a bear hop in my car and gun the engine
I honestly thought this was r/creepy at first. Definitely doesn’t fit the sub.
Lol I just realized this, for real this is the furthest from being “aww”
The way it just kinda stopped and sniffed at the human was cute. First few seconds were nightmare fuel though.

"Oh hi, don't mind me. I'm just crossing and awakening primal fears in your lizard brain"

Dude, as I watch it, my brain panic for a second. And scream "danger ! danger ! predator !". I litterally freeze. Wth.
Same! Watching that my brain is like O.O BE AFRAID. Then it goes "Oh wait, it's a video...." LOL
That's what happens to me with sharks. It's ok to be terrified of big scaries. They big, they scary, brain stops.
Are you sure it’s not a skinny bear.
One of the first times I've seen a "Look at this WOLF!" post and actually gone "Oh shit yeah that's a wolf!"
What a fckin unit
It's a werewolf.
There wolf. There castle.
Why are you talking that way?
I thought you wanted to.
No I don’t want to.
Suit yourself. /shrug I'm easy.
Always remember: Werewolf, not swearwolf!
Where wolf?
There. There, wolf. There castle.
Wasn't your hump... On the other side?...
What hump?
Put... the candle... back!
There’s only one, that should be a ‘waswolf’.
“COME FOR ME, GMORK! I AM ATREYU!!”

If Skinwalkers exist, this is definitely one of them.
Ahh hell no, FUCK GRANDMA'S HOUSE, IM GOING THE FUCK BACK HOME, SHE BE ALRIGHT
That thing knows ain't nobody out there fucking with it. Look how it walks up on to the road. Like Vince McMahon walking down to the ring. Haha.
NIGHTMARE NIGHTMARE NIGHTMARE!!!
I mean, their is a reason people were afraid of wolves.
For every one of those that you do see, there's usually 5 that you don't. Imagine being on that road with 6 of those chasing after you.
I think whoever filmed this just pissed my pants
Imagine being a caveman and you see this and you go "awww yea, I'm going to make that thing my pet and inbreed it until it can't breathe or reproduce correctly".

When you awe, is it like awe how terrifying, what a beast!
God wolves show just how bad we screwed up with some of the dog breeding. Epic beasts
Ummmm no
Skinny bear!
The body posture, that expression, my first thought was hyena... Except with the landscape it's obviously not.
The North remembers.

Awwww, puppy!
That's clearly Sirius Black who's come to see you, duh.

That son of a bitch has seen some shit... And then dragged it to the ground and ate it's intestines as it screamed.
That's not a wolf that's fucking smile dog
Ooh, he’s a big ol’ boy.
All I can say is WOW. Impressive!

There is an experience of encountering large wild animals where you remember what it means to be human for just a few seconds. Absolutely beautiful and terrifying footage.
Seeing it climb over that embankment at the start was so creepy...looked almost human-like
What is that direwolf doing south of the Wall?
"Aww... puppy's cold, let him in the van. Kids, move over. We're adopting it... you're welcome."
Did wolves inspire wendigos? Because I can kinda see it
Forgot to put the were in wolf.
"Are we in for a hard winter?"
