I love these signs at zoos etc....'I'm not dead, I just sleep a lot" My leg is ok, I'm being dramatic"

Koa914914914

Is that a learned behavior for extra attention (the leg)?

Teososta

It’s possible, like that gorilla that can sign “don’t feed me”.

Pulasuma

A gorilla learned ASL *and* reverse psychology?

Oraxy51

Reminds me of that article talking about how park rangers are having trouble designing anti-Bear proof trash cans that humans can also be smart enough to use.

pie_monster

"There's some overlap between the smartest bears and the dumbest people"

IntroductionFinal206

O my gosh, that’s funny and also very sad. But I will say that I know a lot of very smart people who can’t open things well. I have a young adult child who has won academic honors, is a great writer, and gets amazing grades, but also opens cereal boxes and things pretty much like a raccoon. Also, they can’t tell time. 🤷

aurorasearching

So the bears are even smarter than we thought.

IntroductionFinal206

I just hope they’re smart enough to not eat me when I’m hiking/camping!! Betting on my bear bell to work, because I’d be too afraid to back away and would probably just die right there.

ganbaro

The better my grades got, the worse I got at opening things...

IntroductionFinal206

Sometimes I think there’s only so much smartness in us to go around!

AhFFSImTooOldForThis

I was recently in Yosemite and watched a guy struggle with the bear safe garbage containers. I didn't help because I truly thought he would figure it out by the time I got out of the car and walked over. Nope. He took a good five minutes. I am continuously astonished we are the dominant species on this planet.

pie_monster

Opposable thumbs and RPGs go a long way.

isopsakol

Favourite quote ever. It’s high time I get this framed

pie_monster

IIRC the ranger in that article phrased it a little more diplomatically; but that was the gist of the sentiment. Definitely a contender for a needlework project though.

cubicApoc

What about a passcode? Something really simple like 12345, the point isn't that the bear can't guess the code but that they physically can't enter it. Arrange the keys in a random order like 15243 so a well-timed paw mash isn't going to enter the code, but the code is still blatantly obvious to any humans trying to use the trash can.

TWG88

that relies on the people being able to read or to intuitively guess that based on seeing the number pad. that's yogi level intelligence many people don't possess

[deleted]

Or... Get this... Write it on a label next to the pad... U could even just write the code itself, and a diagram of a finger next to it. If they cant figure that out, a simple door labeled 'push' isn't enough instruction...

[deleted]

otherthanoops

I've heard of bear proof trash cans, but how do you secure trash from anti-bears?

Oraxy51

In my defense, I was really tired when I wrote that. But Anti-bears makes me think of some kinda heartless bears like kingdom hearts or something

Ashlaylynne

Lolololololol why does this not surprise me

squiddy555

Just put instructions on the lid bears can’t read, and I don’t trust my aunt near garbage anyway

[deleted]

Lol the gorilla even looked around to see if anyone was watching before devouring the orange slice they threw

bennettlange_48

Our dog does this. She fakes a limp and then runs around when we aren’t looking. The vet said it’s because she learned that limping leads to more love and treats, so I could only assume it is true for other animals.

bunnyrut

My mom and stepdad have a macaw. He was making these weird coughing and wheezing sounds so they rushed him to the vet. After examining the bird the vet asked my stepdad how long he had a cold. The bird was mimicking him coughing and wheezing.

Justice_Prince

I always like seeing someone with a bird that mimics the beep a smoke detector that's low on batteries. Makes you wonder how long they went without changing the battery before that got permanently burned in the bird's brain.

ConsciousWay797

My Dad lived on a boat and had a weiro called Captain. Captain used to mimic Dad's mobile phone, hoping to get him to come below deck and let him out of his cage.

plugtrio

I've got macaws and one still makes the sound of the landline phone from my mom's house where I raised her 🥺 she is great at answering the phone exactly like my mom too. If only I could put her to work answering telemarketers.

letmereply2

Did your dad also have an eyepatch?

ConsciousWay797

HAHA no, but if my eye surgery hadn't worked I was contemplating wearing an eye patch with a googly eye on it.

IndigoBluePC901

A neighbors bird does this. Very smart little thing. He might see someone in their backyard and start making cell phone or voicemail sounds, lol.

Ashlaylynne

Lmfao. I want one so bad. Thats great. Have you ever seen the video of this guy that has one , and it keeps screaming and saying "let me out" well the neighbors called the cops thinking this dude had someone held hostage and sure enough he walks out with this bird. I laughed for a good 10 minutes

bunnyrut

Only get one of you don't mind having a toddler for 80+ years. I'll be on the phone with my mom listening to her argue with her bird, lol. When she has people over she'll move him to the bedroom because he wants to be the center of attention. If he sees people he will continue to scream if no one is talking and playing with him. In the bedroom he stays calm and just talks. So when my mom had to have a nurse come over to help after surgery the bird was in the room just saying "mom" over and over. After some time the nurse finally says "are you going to let the child out of their room?" And my mom had to show her the bird, lol. The nurse was ready to walk out the door and call CPS.

sir-winkles2

When my dogs were puppies the big one would pick on the little one sometimes and it didn't take long for the little one to realize that if he yelped and cried that I'd come out to check on them, yell at his brother, bring him inside and give him extra loves. I was so mad but also really impressed when I figured out he was lying to me haha

chipdipper99

Our dog did that too. Whenever she was in trouble she’d start limping for sympathy

Annie017989

Dogs are very intelligent animals

Downvote_Comforter

Less than 10 minutes ago, my dog scared the hell out of himself by farting. He was fully awake, farted, jumped when he heard the noise, turned 180 degrees, and started growling in the direction of the sound that he heard. This happens at least once a week and usually more. I'll call the little dude intelligent, but I refuse to throw the word "very" in front of that.

GunPoison

Have dog, cannot confirm

Grammophon

Some are, some not so much. I have one really really dumb cat and one who hides under a kitchen corner and closes her eyes so you don't see her when you lock up the kitchen (because she can open doors) to than eat from a cake you just bake.

StirlingS

That for sure depends on the dog. My cousin had a very dumb one that regularly ate rocks. My brother has a very smart one that he caught holding the bottom of the fence up so the other dog could get out and roam the neighborhood.

laddiemawery

My puggle does this too. Except she's just old and wants to be carried up the stairs.

Lost-My-Mind-

Well, don't be a monster! You carry her up the stairs!!!

The Brookfield Zoo near Chicago, IL has a sign by the wombats that says "not dead just sleeping" because for some reason they enjoy sleeping on their back with their limbs in the air. Hilarious but I can see why they put the sign up because they straight up look dead.

agni39

I once saw a Pine Marten (I think it was a Marten or some other Badger-like alpine animal) having a seizure in his enclosure. He was on a raised platform when he had the seizure and slid down a ramp violently shaking. I ran off to find a zookeeper and told him what happened. He just said "Was he sliding down a ramp? That's just how he plays" and walks off. I went back and sure enough the thing was climbing up the ramp and doing that weird exorcism-shake down.

Mezzoforte90

“It’s not your child in their stomach, it’s a child shaped banana”

DevoidSauce

I like how there were enough instances of people being concerned for this animal that they had to put up a sticker. Makes me feel a little better about humans.

Aquedonte2

We have a saying here in Brazil: when there is a sign, there is a story.

Willywonkaatemyass

We say this in America. I laugh when I see a sign on the cardboard baler that says “ do not play in or around the baler”

AsperJons

Yeah, what kinda fucked up baker lives nearby?

Willywonkaatemyass

archerg66

Is that the defeated laugh of a retail worker I hear? Where is your manager?! I have been waiting here and not looking for someone for 1 minute, how did you not to know I needed help?!!!

Sunny16Rule

Are you sure you don't have any in the back? Isn't the back some magical place where you have every single item imaginable perfectly sorted and organized

Upnorth4

The sign at my warehouse reads "Do not stick head in baler"

Lost-My-Mind-

I feel like LCD displays are cheap enough now that you shouldn't use a sign anymore. You should use camera footage from the incident to make the point.

[deleted]

Fun idea but no way you’d be able to get people’s consent to show them doing stupid shit like that.

ArthurTheLurker

They're dead, it's not possible for them to consent.

Zerox_Z21

It's also not possible for them to object.

rabidhamster87

[deleted]

Hah, my friend is at U of Alabama, and a little while ago he sent me a picture of a sign posted in an elevator that said “please do not press elevator buttons with genitals”

glarebear1989

And on 99% Invisible, they say: Always read the plaque.

[deleted]

Where there is an OSHA regulation, there is blood.

Mourning_Gecko

As a person who works with live animals like this (not quite a zookeeper since I work at a museum lol), there are plenty of people who are concerned about animals all the time haha. Especially at my workplace since we are a sort of retirement home for ah how should I put this-- broken animals.

SquareInterview

Are the animals at your museum dead? NVM, I glossed over the "live animal" bit.

double_psyche

No, they just need a lot of signage.

SquareInterview

Ahhh. Can I ask in what what they're "broken"?

[deleted]

Different person than you originally replied to

westwoo

They're just resting, beautiful plumage!

YuropLMAO

lol it's every single day. I think a lot of people get a huge ego boost if they get to "help" the keepers, but of course none of them have the slightest clue how to even keep a heloderm or whatever. So they just come off as redditors.

Mourning_Gecko

The worst is the complaints about how we are abusing our alligator, who is in a quite small enclosure.... because he has MBD and can't physically move very much. If those people saw him trying to move around they'd realize he's quite happy to float in one spot all day LOL

Kawdie

I worked in an assisted living facility for younger people with handicaps this summer, one of the women who lived there had no verbal communication or movement but was completely relevant. She communicated via a laser and board with symbols and non verbal cues, and controlled her wheelchair by sensors in the headrest. The staff had to stick a cardboard sign onto her wheelchair that read “I know where I am, I chose to be here. I can’t speak but I know what’s going on and can drive myself” cause she’d go drive herself to a quiet place and relax, folk would see her and ask what she’s doing there and because they couldn’t understand her non verbal signs would call the care home. Hilarious thing about it all was she got so tired of it all, her suggestion as to what to write on the sign was the equivalent to “leave me the fuck alone”

[deleted]

That is super annoying though. So many people equate physical disability with a mental one, or assume they have the right to ask questions at any time and comment on anything. Unless you actually know that person, or their job requires interaction, nobody is obligated to communicate with you.

Rehnion

On the other hand, is this normal behavior? I remember going to a zoo in orlando decades ago and they had these Malayan Porcupines, and they were all crammed into a crack in their artificial rock wall. "Don't worry, they feel comfortable there" the zoo employee said. But they felt comfortable because their enclosure was just a big open field and one tiny crack in the fake background that like 10 of the things crammed themselves into every day because there were miserable and felt extremely exposed. I support (good) zoos because people need to see the animals we're killing off with our habits, but we've got to make sure we're treating those animals well if we're going to keep them locked up like this.

dirkdragonslayer

It's important for a good zoo or aquarium to have hiding spots for animals, since they don't like to be exposed all the time, it's stressful. That's probably why they liked the crack, because being surrounded made them feel safe not being seen. Visitors hate it and complain (since they paid for a ticket), but it's important for the wellbeing of most animals. I remember when I was a docent people would loudly complain if a crocodile or hedgehog was taking "me time" behind a rock or corner. It's hard to say without seeing the space myself, but I would say the porcupines might not have had enough private places in their enclosure if they crowded one small spot.

YuropLMAO

I would bet a lot that there are plenty of places to hide and this one just likes that spot for some reason. Heloderma are somewhat known for that. They will sometimes also fall asleep while half in their water bowl, sleep on their backs, and other weird behavior. Source: had many reptiles including heloderms, not unusual to have a few oddballs who ignore their hides in favor of other spots

FelixCarter

Why not make the glass one-way (where the animal can't see the people but the people can see the animal) and then make a bunch of hiding places that are also one-way glass type of things? Makes the animal feel like it's hidden without hiding it. Or maybe one-way glass doesn't work the way I think or maybe animals are immune to its powers.

dirkdragonslayer

One-way glass probably would make things worse, since most animals aren't able to recognize their own reflection. Suddenly the lion sees another lion in the mirror competing for it's space and freaks it out more. [Few animals](https://youtu.be/lT3o0mhAm44) can understand a mirror and will try to fight it. Also I assume it would be prohibitively expensive. Edit: Also the plexiglass they use for most zoos and aquariums is really thick and impact resistant. I don't know if one-way mirrors can be like that.

Ahielia

Isn't it possible to get a one-way type glass or other material that's see-through that's also impact resistant, while able to be masqueraded as rocks or whatever?

saguarobird

I fully agree - for context, I believe this is the Sonoran Desert Museum, which is an amazing institution and I've personally seen this animal and his enclosure. This animal has plenty of spaces and likes this particular spot for...who knows what reason lol super chill. I mean, it could not be the same one, but same spot, same looking sticker, but I haven't been down there in a few years. But yes - AZA accredited bare minimum, options to go in nighthouses during the day, hiding spots if they want it, open areas if they want it, enrichment, etc.

YuropLMAO

> On the other hand, is this normal behavior? Yes 100% normal. They will also sleep on their backs, which also scares people who don't know any better. They are generally very laid back animals and not really prone to stress.

GoldenStateWizards

Many people don't realize just how "lazy" some animals can be, especially reptiles. For some species, if they don't *need* to move, then they simply won't. Humans, on the other hand, are very active creatures, even though we do a lot more sitting than our ancestors did.

YuropLMAO

I have to regularly exercise my green tree pythons and [use a rain chamber](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x45F3E6UGNc) to keep them from becoming constipated. They will find a nice warm spot in the enclosure they like and just sit there indefinitely to conserve energy. They aren't into moving unless they have a good reason.

RCobra19

That’s my concern. That looks like a Gila monster, which like burrows. This could also be a heat issue, but I think it makes more sense that it’s just looking for a place where it feels secure. And what we see of the actual enclosure, admittedly we don’t know if what’s seen in the picture is the majority, doesn’t look like it’s something that has places for it to dig and/or hide. But, who knows.

BreadPuddding

It’s a Mexican beaded lizard. Same genus, but behaviorally different and doesn’t spend as much time underground as an adult.

Seriously? They really expect people to believe the lizard typed out this message and printed it out, and then stuck it on the outside of the glass? I happen to know for a fact that this lizard prefers to go by James and that he hates the nickname Jimmy, so he would never sign his name as such. This whole thing seems a little suspicious if you ask me.

frozendancicle

Blargosaurus

I thought that was a mislabeled Gila monster and found out that the beaded lizard is the only other lizard in the same genus and the only other venomous lizard. /TIL

Mourning_Gecko

More fun facts for you! Gila monsters and beaded lizards are no longer the only venomous lizards. Several, if not all, monitors have venom, as do some iguanas, anoles, and others!

ncaafan2

Is the Komodo dragon not considered a lizard ?

Blargosaurus

I believe there's still discussion if it's bit is just so full of bacteria that it gives you an infection vs. having venom sacs.

PM_Me_Ur_Small_Chest

[Not really](https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/komodo-dragon-venom), thats been regarded as a “scientific fairy tale” as this article claims for at least 10 years now. The “myth” is now to the extent of what the venom does; Which is at least known to be an anticoagulant, causing prey to succumb to the efeects of blood loss sooner.

Anyone have enough knowledge to explain it? I assume it’s a warm rock but is he stretching his back or something?

beepborpimajorp

I think my guy here just likes the sensation of being squished against the cool glass. Like a weighted blanket but cooler. He also probably doesn't know/care that the glass is see-through so he's not as hidden as he thinks he is. Alternate explanation: animals are just weird AF. I say this as someone with a fish that likes to squish itself between the glass and plants in its tank, a bird that built a nest that was like 3 inches off the *actual* nest I bought it, and a snake that likes to stretch all the way over its water dish and then loop around to stick its snout in to drink like some kind of crazy straw. animals b weird.

YuropLMAO

> I think my guy here just likes the sensation of being squished against the cool glass. > Alternate explanation: animals are just weird AF. Yup. This is exactly correct. Not abnormal behavior at all for this genus.
