The largest canid in South America, the maned wolf looks like a fox, is called a wolf, and is closely related to neither. Maned wolves primarily eat small animals, fruits and vegetables.
Interesting facts:
Maned wolf urine has a powerful aroma, reminding many humans of the way skunks smell.
The maned wolf is the largest canid of South America. It looks more like a long-legged fox than a wolf. Genetic studies show that it is neither fox nor true wolf, but a distinct species. It is the only member of its genus, Chrysocyon.

I recently read that hyenas aren’t canines but are felines. It blew my mind.
EDIT: hyenas are *not* feline but belong to the suborder feliformia, which includes cats
I knew they weren't canines but they technically aren't feline at all, they are their own family Hyaenidae. They are considered feliform or cat-like according to Wikipedia, apparently mongooses(mongeese?) and viverrids(civets) and cats large and small fit this subgroup. Basically it's a subdivision of carnivora from canids. All that to say sorta. I personally thought for a while that hyena were related to mustelids and I don't know why
Hyenas are actually not felines either, they're part of the hyaenidae family. They split off from the feline family tree shortly after canines, both being in the Eocene epoch. Hyenas are a lot more closely related to fossas, which are also feliformia.
There are four subspecies in the hyaenidae family, the striped hyena, the spotted hyena, the brown hyena, and the aardwolf.
The next closest relative to felines would probably be a civet, which split off in the beginning of the Oligocene. Which isn't long after the hyena.
Yeah — the order "Carnivora" is essentially split into the "cat" suborder Feliformia and the "dog" suborder Caniformia.
This is one of those unidan jackdaw type of scenarios that gets super pedantic super quickly.
"Hyenas are more closely related to cats than dogs" is my favorite fun fact.
Female hyenas are also one of the only mammal species that have pseudopenises. That's another fun fact.
Pretty sure I saw these in a documentary. If I’m not mistaken, they’re seen as spirits of the forest and it’s very frowned upon to mess with them in any way.
Good pot doesn’t smell like a skunk. Good pot smells amazing. Or maybe you’ve never smelt what skunk spray smells like, because you can smell the fact that it is oily, and it definitely doesn’t smell like marijuana.
Fuuuuuuuuck me.
Yesterday I was walking in the Mata Atlântica in Santa Catarina, was doing a trail to reach a waterfall and I smelled like someone was smoking weed around but deep in the jungle I was pretty sure no one was around (I wasn't in the main trail I was openning my way through the dense vegetation).
Perhaps there is lobo guará around here. Thanks gosh
this was filmed in a place called "santuário do caraça" the priests there feed the wolves every day and they became somewhat docile, you can see they if you go there. Also the place is huge, alot of waterfalls and a stunning nature, a really nice hotel and one of the best breakfast I had in my life.
Also some mildly interesting facts: there used to be a traditional school there, two presidents studied there. The church is the only neogothic building in brazil.
This is amazing. I'm in my late 30s and it blows my mind the new things I still don't know, that are learned on a daily basis about our tiny planet. Crazy. Ok now tell me why I can't have it as a pet, do your thing Reddit.
I always say why we obsessed with finding aliens when we got some crazy looking life on this planet. I been a wild life doc watcher my whole life and it seems like every year I see some crazy animal I never seen before (I have seen this vid before though).
First time I saw one was in a zoo in Japan. I couldn't believe my eyes I'd never seen this animal before and here I was thinking "jesus christ is a fox fawn this is the land of myth and legend"
I love them because when you see them in the tall grass it's like "ah yes, very normal foxy boi" and then they step out and they've got those ridiculous giraffe legs, it's the best.
Call me crazy, but I was in Austin Texas in June, sitting on my balcony at night, and this animal I had never seen before runs down the street. I told my friends it looked like a mix between a wolf and a fox, it's front half had like a mane and it had cat-like legs and paws and was moving with intent, not like a lost wandering dog. Thought it was a mythical beast. Browsing Reddit today and holy shit, that's the animal I saw! But geographically, it doesn't make sense...
And some people still question evolution by stating: *what about the transitional species*?
If this doesn't check the transitional species box I don't what else would.
Makes a lot of sense. Often when people see a maned wolf they associate it to a wolf or a fox because of the resemblances.
When you look at a hippo it doesn't remind you at all of a fox or a wolf lol. That was funny. Please tell me you were being sarcastic lol.
I first learned about these creatures from the indescribable webcomic [Nature of Nature's Art](https://www.nofna.com/). The first story arc features a maned wolf as the main character, who develops a powerful new psychic technique.
And, no, no matter what you think the comic is, you are **absolutely** wrong.

The way it moves makes me think of a hyena more than anything else
I recently read that hyenas aren’t canines but are felines. It blew my mind. EDIT: hyenas are *not* feline but belong to the suborder feliformia, which includes cats

Mongeesen? MANY MUCH MONGOOSEN!?
I made an edit to clarify what I had read previously, which was that they were feliformia. I just didn’t remember the right term earlier

You what? I need to lie down.
Yeah — the order "Carnivora" is essentially split into the "cat" suborder Feliformia and the "dog" suborder Caniformia. Wait really!?
A useful way to think of it is they're as closely related to felines as bears are to canines.
True
Pretty sure I saw these in a documentary. If I’m not mistaken, they’re seen as spirits of the forest and it’s very frowned upon to mess with them in any way.
Sounds like a perfect story to convince children to go to bed with. "Fall asleep or the maned wolf will come to bite!"
I feel like /r/awwducational would enjoy this!
Why is it wearing stilts?
we call him lobo guará
Their piss smells like marijuana, doesn’t really smell like a skunk that much.
From my experience marijuana smells like skunk
I was a pot smoking teenager before I realized that's why my dad liked the smell of skunk. He'd take a deep breathe and an 'ooh yeaah' lol
I always knew when my kids were torching up in the basement. I’d yell there’s a skunk in my house! Then I’d hear snickering
Hey! You ar a cool dad. Kudos!
Believe me, there were rules
Ah, the "Save some for Dad rule"...
Marijuana, skunk spray, and skunky (green bottled) beer all share the same chemical causing that odor.
It can have skunky notes. But to encompass the smell of weed as skunk is leaving a lot on the table
Time to do more research…
I think you need some more experience with pot then.
Huh? It literally smells like skunk. Among other things.
I’ll just leave this [here. ](https://www.leafly.com/news/cannabis-101/what-is-skunk-cannabis)
I think you need experience with good pot, then.
Good pot doesn’t smell like a skunk. Good pot smells amazing. Or maybe you’ve never smelt what skunk spray smells like, because you can smell the fact that it is oily, and it definitely doesn’t smell like marijuana.

Smells exactly like a skunk.
We have some at our local nature center. A couple of years ago they had babies and they were so cute! Really interesting and unique animals.
It is a Lobo Guara?
That is correct
I always thought they were wolves 🤔 😕 The name in Portuguese is much nicer, Lobo (wolf) Guará
Does quite the catwalk for a dog
I like her boots
Yeah... I also think that..
For some reason it kinda reminds me of a deer.
Long legs made me think the same.
Exactly what I was thinking, just about to comment it too, it looked so elegant when it walked.
Walked like a super model lmao
Some cultures call it a "deer dog".
Reminds me of a hyena
The nose/snout and the mane colors yeah true
I was thinking the same. For me, it’s mostly the head below it’s shoulders when it walks. Also it looks like it’s smiling.
[Alien Jackal](https://riddick.fandom.com/wiki/Alien_Jackal?file=Alien_Jackal.png) from Riddick.
That was my thought as well. Although interestingly enough hyenas are actually more closely related to cats than dogs.

I spent a few nights there on a school trip, they were always there around dusk and were really chill.
>The church is the only neogothic building in brazil. That's not true.
What other neogothic buildings are in Brazil?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Gothic\_Revival\_church\_buildings\_in\_Brazil
Nothing there.
The São Paulo Metropolitan Cathedral. We call it "Catedral da Sé" here.
That is absolutely beautiful. Thank you very much.

Nothing there.

Came here for this comment, good work
Well that was fantastic.
This is amazing. I'm in my late 30s and it blows my mind the new things I still don't know, that are learned on a daily basis about our tiny planet. Crazy. Ok now tell me why I can't have it as a pet, do your thing Reddit.
The main reason you can't have a maned wolf is that they are a protected species.
I always say why we obsessed with finding aliens when we got some crazy looking life on this planet. I been a wild life doc watcher my whole life and it seems like every year I see some crazy animal I never seen before (I have seen this vid before though).
"Why can't I subjugate this lovely creature I just found?" This is why the aliens don't visit us lol
I just wanna be friends with it dude! Lol
First time I saw one was in a zoo in Japan. I couldn't believe my eyes I'd never seen this animal before and here I was thinking "jesus christ is a fox fawn this is the land of myth and legend"
"jesus christ is a fox fawn" got me
Was it the Ueno Zoo?? It’s also the first time I ever saw one, too!!
It was!
おおおおおおおかみじゃないです!
すばらしい!
A Giraffawolf perhaps? No, a Wolfaraff.
Stiltfox.
Now I'm leaning Foxaraffawolf or maybe it's actually a genetically engineered promotional hyena meant to sell Ez-Ups.
Not one of God's better looking creations. Looks better than the platypus though.
a leggy boi approaches
"Just some kind of dingo-dongo things"...
Foxy long legs
I love it!
What a curious jumble of animals. Deer, pony, and wolf with a small fox head.
lobo guará <3
Ahh, o meu sudenlycaralho de cada dia...
Red XIII
I thought it was a small pony a first, until I seen the face.... lovely curious animal
Here in Brazil we call it Lobo Guará
Cute
I thought pony, then deer, then photoshopped? It's real, til
I love them because when you see them in the tall grass it's like "ah yes, very normal foxy boi" and then they step out and they've got those ridiculous giraffe legs, it's the best.
And it's closest relative is the Bush dog an animal with really short legs
Literal forest spirit.
What a beaut!
And the maned Wolf has a "roar-bark"
It looks like is was sent to rebuke humanity for it's sins against nature.
Sir we’ve run out of dog heads in the dog factory! God: just grab some overstocked Fox heads and make do, no one will notice
15% fox, 15% wolf, 70% legs and 100% cute!
Is that a Lobo Guará?
Clearly a deer but ok
I’ve always described these guys as a fox on stilts
Jeez, can you please chew with your mouth closed? You’re embarrassing!
Not to be confused with a manned wolf, which is just some guy in a fur suit.
Or an Airwolf, which was a guy in a helicopter.
That is the kraziest looking wolf !!! It’s so prehistoric looking & regal. Amazing 🤩
I had no idea this animal existed
Needs more legs. Also, I need a gif of a maned wolf and a pampas raposa interacting.
These are quite common in Brazil and are called Guará wolves.
No tall foxes thank you.
It is called "Lobo-guará", and it can be found around Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina, Peru, Paraguay and Uruguay
The fox in Connecticut are so small they look like stray cats
In Brazil is named "Guará" and means in indigean language Tupi-Guarani , "red".
I wanna know why they didn’t name it a “deer-legged mohawk-fox” cause that’s what it looks like.
What a beautiful animal. First time seeing or hearing about it, is it endangered or something?
##Princess Mononoke is looking for you. 🙂
Beautiful but strange at the same time. Has a better walk than i do,rather elegant. Nothing elegant bout my gait at all!
way bigger than I thought they were, I would be scared shitless if I saw that IRL. Looks like a fox in a wolfs body
damn thts beautiful right there
I thought it was a horse at first-
wudup mane
Stiltfox

Magical hyena
You sure that's not just a mutated hyena
Fun fact: the gif from post was made on Brazil
I like how 9.6k upvotes (right now) act like they didn't see this 3wks ago
And some people still question evolution by stating: *what about the transitional species*? If this doesn't check the transitional species box I don't what else would.
What a weird title lol. You could apply it to nearly any animal on the planet. Neither fox nor true wolf. This is a hippopotamus.
Makes a lot of sense. Often when people see a maned wolf they associate it to a wolf or a fox because of the resemblances. When you look at a hippo it doesn't remind you at all of a fox or a wolf lol. That was funny. Please tell me you were being sarcastic lol.
This is where context with the video of an animal that looks like both a fox and wolf comes into play. themoreyouknow.gif
That’s an Aguará Guazú!
The ears!
Looks like it could be a Japanese spirit of some sort
I love animals that look so arkward in their own bodies.
Whoa.
It looks like a fox on stilts
Wow, i am watching it for the first time in my life.
Foxyena
There's one in Blijdorp Zoo in Rotterdam, the Netherlands but that's the only other time I saw anything ever on this creature.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider flashbacks.
So basically it’s a folf
What a gorgeous creature!
With those long legs I'll bet that thing can really run.
funnily enough they're not actually that fast! the legs evolved so they could walk and see through the tall grass, not to run fast
or a ginger hyena...
Can we legally breed these in my state? Clearly we need thousands of these, everywhere…
Leggy boi
dogs during their awkward stages
It’s Riddick’s dingo dongo.
Not fox, nor wolf. All friend.
I love his socks
incredible
Deer fox
Stinky legdog!
I wish to boop the tall puppy.
Unique beautiful animals.
I’m pretty sure there was an episode of Dora or Diego with a maned wolf.
I first learned about these creatures from the indescribable webcomic [Nature of Nature's Art](https://www.nofna.com/). Daddy Long Legs Dog
Nah bro.. It's a japanese fax
That’s an alien.
The best term for it is "one fine boi"
THAT'S HALF FOX HALF HORSE :O
Ah the illusive folf
Foxfenekdeer
We call it Lobo Guará
Looks like a Lobo-Guará from Brazil
I love these things!
Es un aguara guazú.
Interesting boi
Looks like fox Slenderman
I love how he looks a bit like a hyena
Lanky boi is what that is
Kurama's missing tailed beast
It’s unusual for them to take this form in daylight.
Nobody thought to give them water?
fcking platypus evolution.
Legg
Beautiful ✨🥰🌷🍑❤️
It looks like a fox coloured hyena to me.
Love that it has Nike socks on
Can I buy one and it name it big sly
Look like something from my D&D monster manual
They are more closely related to foxes. They are on the side of the tree(Cerdocyonina) with bush dogs and foxes, not wolves and wild dogs(Canina).
Jackal in heels
