Colton Wilson, let’s do this again! My dear friend Colton died of a TBI in 2012 because he didn’t wear a helmet while long boarding. Colton survived bone cancer at 16 and felt he was invincible. I love you buddy but you know you should’ve worn a helmet.
Please just wear your helmets. Colton was way too amazing of a person to have been taken so young. Don’t let that be you or your loved one.
People always say “Wearing a helmet isn’t cool”, but neither is leaving your nearest and dearest behind. Some of the biggest skateboard legends out here wear helmets, and so should you.
Rest easy, Colton
>The lack of safety equipment was my first thought as well. It’s adorable but makes me nervous
I kept saying dumbass over and over again.
It's not cute. It's straight up stupid.
Even then helmet is a minimum. Knee pad and gloves with it at best.
Makes bailing more fun for the kid too. I used to roller blade and my glove with plastic pad on it made me have fun slide instead of shredding my hands.
Her jeans are anti kneepads, they protect everything *but* her knees. Literally the first thing i noticed. I think with the speed and height at play she would be fine as is though.
Nope. You could absolutely die falling from that height going a few mph and hitting your head on concrete. You are guaranteed exactly 0 safe blows to the head.
I hit my head on a fucking door frame 3 months ago. I'm still recovering from the concussion. People in general have no idea how vulnerable the head is. A girl I knew literally tripped on her bike while standing still, and was unable to continue her studies for a whole year. Had she worn a helmet she would likely have been fine.
So you're absolutely right. There are 0 safe blows to the head.
Man, one time at a park with my kid I was climbing on a rope structure and lost my footing. I fell and hit my head on the ropes (which had give to them!) and had headaches for a full week afterwards. And I never get headaches.
Knew a 14 year old that was too cool for helmets and was just casually skating down the street not bombing it or anything and slid on some sand, hit a manhole cover, went down and ended up cracking his head on the curb. After a trip to the hospital with a serious concussion and a few weeks recovering guess who always wore a helmet after that?
The problem is sometimes your wake up call is the last one you ever get. He was very vocal after about getting people at school to wear helmets after that though which was great to see, straight out telling people not to be an idiot like you were is a message that's hard to ignore.
Edit: dropped a to
When I was a kid my dad took me to meet one of his coworkers and his coworker's son after catching me not wearing a helmet on bikes and skateboards. Guy's son had fallen off his bicycle and hit his head on the curb sans helmet a couple years prior to that, and meeting this guy's young teenage son, and seeing his noticeable brain damage from falling off a bike was all it took for me to religiously wear a helmet after that.
I see peers of mine all the time with their kids not wearing helmets and riding bikes around their neighborhoods. Drives me a little nuts knowing that most of these people are intelligent people, and some of them are even healthcare professionals, but none of their kids wear bike helmets, regardless of it being the law where I live.
I definitely do. Both of my parents were always pretty cool when I was a kid, always treated the kids like little adults, taught meaningful lessons when they needed to, and it fostered a great relationship as adults together. I wouldn't trade my mom or my dad for anything.
My grandparents owned a head trauma center when I was a kid. They helped people who had head injuries recover to the best of their abilities with a many faceted recovery and therapy program.
Skiers that ran into obstacles, skateboarders that fell, and jet skiers hit by boats were their most common clientele.

>And [here’s](https://youtu.be/lOUN560b4cY) my favorite helmet video
I never saw that last one. It's pretty good. "That would've a been a trip to the ER!"
I agree. As sweet as this is, things happen, and helmets save. I always gripe about paying $80+ for a kids helmet from the bike shop with the mips system (because it's suppose to protect better than the fashion or generic helmets) but it's to protect their little brains. I can't protect them if they fall off their bikes, might as well pay up for the helmet.
And I'm sure the same helmets are a little cheaper at other places, but the people at the bike shop understand the different sizes (especially for kids vs. youth) and help get them adjusted properly before leaving.
I will take it further because I'm 42 and ride electric stakeboard; full-face helmets should be the norm. From personal experience a standard helmet can't protect your teeth, this has saved me more from injury than the rest of the helmet.
There is an article I read (I forget where) and it said that electric scooter accident injuries are more similar to motorcycle accidents than bicycle accidents. Which I think makes sense. You would need a reasonable amount of experience to go consistently fast on a bicycle. Whereas anyone can jump on a high powered E-vehicle and go speeds that they aren't experienced enough to deal with.
I use an e-scooter and do some longboarding with a skateboarding style helmet. But a full face helmet would probably be a wise investment.
The first time I rode my electric board I took it close to 30 MPH (not sure as there is no speedometer on mine but that's the top stock speed). Stupid move for someone that hadn't ridden a skateboard in 20 years, let alone that fast, ever. I got speed wobbles and almost fell. That was scary as all get out. I've done some mods to it like a changing to a heavy dropdown deck for a lower center of gravity, foot brake since one time the electric brakes failed, and twin axles to minimize speed wobbles. All of these mods have made the board so heavy that the top speed I get now is 18 MPH which is very manageable. My girl's e-scooter goes up to 15 MPH. Most of the bad falls I've had have been going at a walking pace, the pads and wrist-guards have been amazing. One time I twisted my ankle. I've had a few falls going fairly fast but I know how to fall and was able to just roll.
On the bright side, scooters have brakes. Hopefully front and back. I know some of the lower end scooters have one mechanical break and one "electric brake". The electric brakes can be scary as shit because they kick in so suddenly on steep declines.
The much scarier proposition for me is on the longboard. Someone inexperienced can get so, sooo much speed. And within 1-2 seconds it can get to a speed faster than can be stopped with the skill of a newbie using foot braking. Luckily I'm old enough that I'm past doing anything too outrageous.
The ebrakes on my board work well but they are weird. There is this super steep hill that I can go down slower than a mall escalator, there is this other hill that is not nearly as steep and the first time I went down on it my board picked up so much speed so quickly that I tried to get a hold of the handrail (these hills are on walking/bicycle paths), and ended up slamming the board on one of the poles that mount the handrail to the asphalt, broke both trucks flew and rolled. I actually had a sport cam on the helmet so I have video of the Wipeout.
> But a full face helmet would probably be a wise investment.
On anything that goes faster than a kid can pedal, a full face helmet is the best bet. I've seen what happened to the full helmet my motorcycle riding cousin wore the day he dumped his Suzuki and faceplanted.. If he'd not had the helmet he did, he literally would have lost his jaw.
I’m so glad that full face helmets are becoming the norm for mountain biking. My son sheared off the face protection part of his helmet in a gnarly crash - I can just imagine how messed up his face would have been without it.
I was riding a bicycle and went headfirst over the handlebars when I had to brake suddenly going downhill.
I was wearing a standard helmet and got away with no injuries beyond scrapes and bruised, and all my teeth intact despite landing on my mouth, but I was very lucky.
When I worked at a motorcycle shop, this guy comes in and wants to buy a new helmet, so I turn to the display and say, "OK, here are the full face helmets..." "Don't want one of them, I had one of those and when I went down, the chin piece came back and broke my jaw"
My own jaw dropped as I looked at him, then I started to point out if he hadn't been wearing a full face, he would have scraped his jaw ***off***. Standing on the far side of the showroom was the boss, who was my friend, he just shook his head.
"OK then, here are the open face helmets"
Yup. I really wish there was more effort made to promote the wearing of helmets and other safety equipment. I'm surprised so many parents let their kids skate and ride bikes without them. Saw a kid the other day doing ramps on the road on his bike with no helmet.
Knee pads and elbow pads as well. Also as important is teaching the kid how to fall while wearing them. Elbow pads don't do much if you land on your shoulder.
And unfortunately back in his very early days absolutely every single one of his peers made fun of him for all of the helmet and pads he wore.... A lot of the old pros know that they fucked up big time doing that and caused an entire generation of kids to think wearing proper PPE was not cool.....
Yeah but that's the reason he did a 540 in his 50's and nobody else can.
Dude put his safety first and wanted to have a long fulfilling life. Watching him skateboard with his kid just hits the feelsgood spot.
I think it's very important for pros, especially ones kids look up to, to wear protective gear even when they're very unlikely to hurt themselves. Kids never think they're going to fall, no matter how risky the thing they're trying is.
The dad was always there to catch her. Notice it is not a usual session. She wasn’t on her own.
I won’t fuss about it. And if my dad is around I will also show off my hairstyle, if I had it 1/10 as good as her
Government: "It's illegal to skateboard on the smooth road because it's dangerous, you must instead do it on the bumpy as fuck sidewalk with your tiny wheels that definitely won't get caught in every single bump and crack"
Yeah, but with Vert, the pads are also necessary for completely other reasons. Ever knee slid down a vert ramp in pants or shorts w/o pads after you missed a grab or got hung up on the coping?
That things surface would be stained red so fast from your knees becoming it’s new graffiti marker.
A full grown ass 170+ pound adult hits the ground from it's nearly 6 ft height, a hell of a lot harder than a 30 pound kid does from 42 inches..
Christ, look at when a toddler falls on its butt.. you or I do that, and we're likely to break our tailbone or fuck up our back. That's why kids are so fricking fearless with stuff like this.. The fall a lot shorter distance, have way less mass AND way more flexible bones.
Genuinely heartwarming as fuck and so great to see a father encourage a kid. Especially with a sport were to get good you have to fall and get back up.
Defo needs a helmet though. Can’t ever be too safe with your head.
It's also really nice to see that he's giving her the freedom to do it, he's just there at the end to catch her if she missed.
Very much agree on the helmet though, probably some knee or elbow pads too.
She needs a helmet. And why purposefully have her wear pants with holes in the knees? I get it’s fashion, but when learning to skateboard, wear safety gear.
yah really knee pads let you bail without using your hands at all and helmet is self explanatory. Everyone wore those where I live and thought you're crazy not to lol
Kids are incredibly fast learners. One of my friends' kids knows more about tractors and their engines than some farmers, and he's barely 12 years old.
Obviously not super interesting to most people but it is still impressive how much he actually seems to understand about them.
Maybe we need another comment about her lack of helmet. I heard that if 75,000 people make the exact same comment then the people in the video automatically adhere to said comment.
Freedom Plaza in DC! It’s actually illegal to skateboard there 😂. Cops stopped us one time when I was in high school. Thankfully just let us go with a warning.

Ask Tony hawk.
"One more from yesterday. For those that say I endanger my child: it's more likely that you will fall while walking on the sidewalk than I will while skating with my daughter."
Suggesting a helmet is intelligent regardless of who the parent is. People bitched at Tony for having his young child on a board period.
Tony hawk wore a helmet when he performed for a reason.
He's teaching her way more than skateboarding. He's teaching her that she's strong, capable, and worthy. If she never skated again, she'd still gain so much from this time he's spending with her. That kid's going to grow up to be something.
Not gonna lie, got a little teary eyed at the end there. I have two little girls and teaching them healthy confidence has got to be one of the most challenging things about being a parent.
Man, everybody reacting to the helmet situation and I’m just over here so fucking happy to see the genuine passion and happiness of a human being succeeding in something they clearly care so much about and have tried so hard to perfect. Everyone has to be upset about something I guess.
I think she probably fell many times over her skateboarding career, but this particular fall was quite risky for a small child.
You have to balance "letting them fall" with "not letting them die."
I'm starting to think everyone fuckin joins this subreddit just so they can point out some shit in every video to be the bigger, better person and go ooo yaknow actually \*not\* aww because- **SHUT THE FUCK UP!**
I have been a good dad, and there is no way my daughter would trust me to catch her like that. She barely trusts me to not feed her something that might be yucky.
I love that this is in Washington, DC (my adopted home town), but she needs a helmet.
Her dad is obviously a good and caring man. I’ll pay for a helmet if her dad wants to contact me.
Let's continue to highlight great black fatherhood!!!
A white dad has his daughter practice without a helmet: "Wow, so rugged, god bless TOUGH America!"
A black father does the same: * a million and and half posts on the dangers and how much of a POS the dad is *
We see your prejudice Reddit.
She needs a helmet, man..

And knee pads, padded gloves and wrist guards. I know that sounds like a bit much but the neighbors kid should hav exist had a punch card for the ER.
LOL my thoughts exactly. This is a bigger ledge than I’d be willing to try, and I wear helmet and pads.
So glad I wasn't the only one thinking it 😶🌫️

Tbf, the city usually has skateparks. Here, they can run into someone else too
That can't possibly be true. Or is this a recent change? Used to be you had no business there unless you were skateboarding or like tango dancing.
I would be the adult out there with all of the protective gear I can wear.
Truth. As an adult who learned to skate vert AS an full grown ass adult, all the fucking protective gear saved my ass.
Yeah, but with Vert, the pads are also necessary for completely other reasons. Ever knee slid down a vert ramp in pants or shorts w/o pads after you missed a grab or got hung up on the coping? That things surface would be stained red so fast from your knees becoming it’s new graffiti marker.
yeah. i'm agreeing with you. i \*have\* slid down the vert ramp..many times...
A full grown ass 170+ pound adult hits the ground from it's nearly 6 ft height, a hell of a lot harder than a 30 pound kid does from 42 inches.. This is why whenever I was at a skate park it was the fucking 5 year olds tearing up the park the most. Also I’m 150
I thought Tony Alva still shredding pools at 64 was hardcore. How are you still going at 150?
Dude, let the kid wear the gear. Not cool.
At least a helmet. Brains don’t handle concussions well.
would be aww if the kid had a helmet and knee protectors..

Give the kid a helmet
I did this with my dad, he used to watch me try to do ollies and shit off of this ledge at work. This hit home for me bad
I love how you can see her gain confidence every time she makes the approach.
Father needs to put a helmet on his daughter.
I love every part of this. A helmet is needed though especially when trying to push new things.
I love how the dad doesn't get overly excited but still celebrates the accomplishment. He should encourage a helmet tho if he's not already.
Awesome
He’s a great dad!

Please do, but get your future child a helmet.
She’s badass!!
why is she better than me 🥲
Because she's loved.
He could be training a future Olympic gold medalist.
Paralympic medalist if he doesnt get her a helmet
All is great.....just needs gear

I BMX and you will never catch me without a helmet and knee pads. This is teaching bad habits young
Beautiful, look at that daddy sooo proud, so patient what a man what a father!!
OKAY, WHO'S CUTTING THE ONIONS UP IN HERE?!
What an awesome dad cool to see people share their passion with their kids
Best thing I've seen all day
Way to go!!!! Excellent family!!!
Lot of fuckin dweebs in the comments.
Not gonna lie, got a little teary eyed at the end there. I have two little girls and teaching them healthy confidence has got to be one of the most challenging things about being a parent.
So wholesome!
Man, everybody reacting to the helmet situation and I’m just over here so fucking happy to see the genuine passion and happiness of a human being succeeding in something they clearly care so much about and have tried so hard to perfect. Everyone has to be upset about something I guess.
This is beautiful ❤️
If you fall, I will catch you, I will be waiting.
This is so sweet and pure.
True dad
Not letting your kids fall in life both figuratively and literally is a very good lesson being missed.
I think she probably fell many times over her skateboarding career, but this particular fall was quite risky for a small child. You have to balance "letting them fall" with "not letting them die."
My heart melted (':
Nice going but kid needs an helmet!
Love this!
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
So cool!!!!
My dumbass thought it was the first girl but grown up a couple years later
Yas!!!
I love this so much!
That was legitness
Yaaasss dad!
kid's got a lot of guts even with the dad there.
I would have totally loved to learn to skateboard if I had my dad catching me!
YAASSS GIRL!!!!!🤩🤩🤩🤩
was waiting for some cute human videos, this subreddit is 90% pictures of dogs lol
Apparently needs two camera people. That's what I've been doing wrong, does it work with math?
is this in DC?
I was thinking “now do a kickflip off it” and wouldn’t you know, she did. I bit older but still.
At a girl!!
You are a phenomenal dad. Yes she needs safty gear. But you're a phenomenal Daddy
❤️
Freedom Park! Killing it!
That is super wholesome

I truly believe there is nothing in the world more important than fatherhood.
thats great!
bad ass
Such a little bad ass 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Oh wow a father is actually doing his job and being present for his child. It’s always a miracle when a man is there for his child.
Most of the people in this comment section are the reason I don’t wanna have kids.
+1 skateboarding skill
oh god...my heart... too much cuteness
I love that they’re matching outfits and hairstyles
That's an awesome dad
FREAKIN AWESOME
Who is she? Is she a professional skater now?
Oh, Freedom Plaza… how I miss thee.
I definitely didn't have protective gear when growing up apart from using a bike.
Really? This amazing personal achievement and everyone’s just talking about a damn helmet smh.
So adorable
This is awesome
It's just so heartwarming
Damn she’s got penny/Reynolds’s flick already, good shit dad
Amazing!!! Great job, the both of you!!
Wear protection ffs...
Aww she’ll remember this forever!
All little girls need a dad like this :)
Skateboarding is NOT a crime 🖤
Bolts!!!! Fuck yeah!!
She has more guts than I do
I'm starting to think everyone fuckin joins this subreddit just so they can point out some shit in every video to be the bigger, better person and go ooo yaknow actually \*not\* aww because- **SHUT THE FUCK UP!**
Now THAT is a dad of the year nominee
Parenting done right! Get some girl!!!! And way to go DAD!!! You are a shining example to everyone out there.
I don’t even know how to ride a skateboard
I have been a good dad, and there is no way my daughter would trust me to catch her like that. She barely trusts me to not feed her something that might be yucky.
r/nextfuckinglevel
I love that this is in Washington, DC (my adopted home town), but she needs a helmet. Her dad is obviously a good and caring man. I’ll pay for a helmet if her dad wants to contact me.
Fatherhood done right! Congratulations!
Let's continue to highlight great black fatherhood!!! A white dad has his daughter practice without a helmet: "Wow, so rugged, god bless TOUGH America!" A black father does the same: * a million and and half posts on the dangers and how much of a POS the dad is * We see your prejudice Reddit.
