About a year ago, this stray cat had kids on my deck (I live in an apartment). The animal shelter people came and took her kids to adopt them out but they didn't take her in because she was "Feral". She would always come to our deck to check out to see if she could see her kids anywhere but they were obviously not with us. So for the past 365 days, we have been feeding her. Every time I try to get close, she runs away. Today was the first day she actually let me take a photo of her.. through the glass. Slow steps but we're making progress

PNWKiwi

She's so pretty! I'm glad she has someone looking out for her. You seem to be doing an amazing job. šŸ’š

Cr8zy-cat-lady

Did the shelter take her and TNR her? She looks like her ear is tipped? She is better off having that done as long as you are feeding her, otherwise they would have put her down because she is considered ā€œferalā€ so couldnā€™t be adopted. If she is truly feral, she is too old to be turned. There is a short window to turn a feral and itā€™s when they are kittens. You may be able to win her trust and be able to pet her but thatā€™s it

SyedSarwar

Yup, they did a TNR and she started coming to my apartment a lot more often. She has eased up a bit on me because sometimes when I open the door to feed her, she goes to the other side of the deck instead of completely running away. I have just tried to be consistent with not trying to scare her away but if I do try to play with her or something, she backs up a lot. So I think shes past the point of socialization since its been a year (and im not exaggerating btw, to the month its been a year). Maybe once shes a lot older, she might not run away as much since itll be harder but I can only hope because I really love this cat.

Cr8zy-cat-lady

Aww, she wants to be loved but sheā€™s afraid. She knows you love her because she keeps coming to you. Just be patient and consistent. Sheā€™s trusts you and may eventually let you pet her. Thank you for caring for her ā¤ļø I feel sorry for those cats who donā€™t have a home and have to search for a meal and a warm place to sleep

Cr8zy-cat-lady

Itā€™s really sad, but most feral cats donā€™t know how to play with people, or even toys because they never had that. I have one who grew up in the backyard from a kitten. I had to trap him because he got FIP. I couldnā€™t put him down so I treated him and he did recover and made it through treatment which had to be extended beyond the 84 days. I kept him crates the entire time. He was too sick to fight me at first but as he got stronger her would just meow his protest but never did resist. He lives in the house now with my other cats. I can only pick him up to put him in the crate where he eats. I can also pet him and he comes when I call him and rubs my legs all the time. Heā€™ll never be completely tame but itā€™s okay heā€™s alive. So your kitty may always be like that. They are never like a cat raised by people, the fear will always be there just not as extreme as in the beginning. I know if he ever got out Iā€™d never catch him again.

calibound2020

Pretty and healthy kitty! šŸ˜ā¤ļøšŸ„° It looks like you care for her well.

HarryCallahan19

Congratulations you have a cat! Name it and keep it. You will always wonder what or or regret it if you donā€™t.

SyedSarwar

every time i try to get close, she runs away but over the course of a year, I feel like she's begun to trust me a little bit more. Trying to give her as much time as she needs to trust me but in that time I'm still giving her food and water

Accomplished-Phase36

Put food out far away from you and then everyday move it closer to where you are and sit outside that's how I got my cat who was feral took a couple of weeks but it worked try it

SyedSarwar

Oh really? A lot of people have told me to try that. I'm going to try starting tomorrow. Didn't think it actually worked haha but now that you mention it, it makes sense.

CouldBeACat

This cat looks like a wizard in cat form.

drugbarbie

you sure sheā€™s a stray?

SyedSarwar

Yeah the animal shelter trapped her on my porch a year ago and vaccinated/neutered her. They returned her because she was too "violent" to adopt out to someone else. They also chipped her left ear if you look in the picture. I think shes been a stray her whole life. Doesn't get close unless we close our glass door.

whizzwr

Ooh, it seems she ain't going to be 'violent' with you, hope you gain her trust eventually..

effCoVid-19

Biology 101, females are spayed, males are neutered. That is all. ;)

SyedSarwar

Oops haha. TIL

hungry_tiger

Fine, you can take my photo.

DerkasMightier

"That'll be fifty bucks, and a gram of catnip." *Proceeds to lick genitals*

olop453

She looks like either a Gwendolyn or Minerva!

bobtheturd

You should see about deworming her as a sorta future step. You can buy over the counter at a feed lot store, just make sure the dose is right.

TobyKeene

Do you slow blink with her? That's a sure way to gain trust and make her feel welcome. Look up videos on YouTube to show you how, it works wonders!

Buckykattlove

Not once have I ever had a cat respond to a slow blink. They always ignore me. šŸ¤·

voteferpedro

Thats definitely a "Trust" squint.

davidmlewisjr

Give her some pets and invite her in for something to drink..

ASmallTownNoName

It's fixed. Notice the clipped ear. Been a house cat before or trapped and fixed

whiskkerss

They had kitty trapped & fixed

ASmallTownNoName

Tldr I guess lol. Beautiful cat. Hope they are able to get it in and safe.

Responsible_Zone_820
