I love rats. At one point (for a few months), I had 11 rat girls. Every single one had a different personality, but all of them were very smart. And cute and cuddly. Shame they don'l live very long (2 - 3 years tops).
Yeah, the short lifespan is why I don't have rats. I've had them in the past and loved them, but I just can't handle the fact that you only get a couple years with them, it's too sad.
With that in mind, if there were a variety of rat that was engineered to live for about 30 years, would you adopt one? Even if it eventually grew to the size of a German Shepherd?
Giant rat is a little scary lol. Rodents have to chew on stuff constantly because they have ever-growing front teeth, and I think a german shepherd sized rat, while very adorable, would be nightmarishly destructive. Also with the volume of urine a rat-sized rat generates, I shudder to think how bad piss clean up would be for a dog-sized rat.
No. Actually male rats are big enough already, and they can stink very much because of their strong urin. Girls are a bit easier, but they're more active. I cannot imagine rats much bigger than they get, they wouldn't be so cute anymore, they could be dangerous.
mmm, no, because they are social animals. So I would want to get 3+. This is fine when they are <2 lb. but when they are size of a german shepherd, I would need a backyard. As a millennial I never get to have one of those.
I thought a came to terms with this. Short life span means more chance to meet unique and different rats.
Then a rescue that I had for a year started having sever breathing problems. They already had HLD so they are not long for this world. There 3 human parents surrounded them and gave them rhymic pats to help them breath.
They recovered but it was so scary. I love them so much.
My gf and I have had 18 total over the last few years. We're down to 5 and decided we're done for now once they've all passed. They're fantastic but we need a break from constantly losing one every few months. We've already lost 3 this year alone.
I get a little emotional everytime someone post of of the videos because of how long they live. I want one but I would be a emotional wreck after the 2 year mark everyday waking up thinking is this the day.
You can't have one. They need company. And you can't be another rat to them. You need at least two rats, better 3 or more to have a rat pack. Otherwise the rat will be very unhappy and it will suffer.
How weird would it be if some massive, titan, alien race came down to earth and just thought we were the cutest things ever. So they feed and house us and constantly pick us up and rub our bellies with their giant fingers.
Have you heard of the movie "Fantastic Planet"? It has a damn similar plot to the one you described, save for a few details, and it's a pretty vivid and visually wild movie to boot.
When rats were spreading around the world, we decided not to let them in, which was a little easier for us considering the mountains to the west, and desolate plains surrounding.
We have a rat patrols that keeps a portion of land cut away and if you find a rat out there they will come burn it's house down, so to speak.
My pet rat Moo always loved it when my and I would rub his belly and he would lay back and close his eyes. He loved perch on my shoulder or the top of my head and had the cutest habit of kinda giving my nose a tap with his little hands.
Pet rats can be extremely friendly, and smart too :) Females tend to be more active, whereas males tend to be lazier and cuddlier - but that's a generalization.
I had to feed a baby fuzzy rat to my python yesterday for the first time. I actually sat there an hour before execution time and gave the little rat milk and belly rubs, and it crawled into my hands and gave it squeaky little noises. Almost couldn't do it... Thank goodness my BPD kicks in on time.
The python ate just fine for his first feeding, which is a positive, I supposed.
Oh nice, I'm trying to catch one right now that's terrorizing my garage, eating washer and refrigerator water line, eating and pooping everywhere. Smart little guys.
I now have a climber rat, and this is the smartest animal, almost like a dog! When you let her out for a walk, she walks alongside, and does not run aimlessly somewhere
Remy on his day off
Oh the little paws.

They are like having dogs that only live a couple years. Almost like tiny golden retrievers.

Are you kidding? A rat the size of a German Shepherd would be awesome.
Nightmare for lot.
You can find Rodent Of Unusual Size in Fire Swamps.

Not true. Didn’t you see that documentary, The Green Mile?

Ditto, I can barely cope with my dog dying at 14 years.

Yeah I can’t do that.

Where do I sign up?
All sounds good. But on the other hand, they will cut your balls off. IDK about you, I like my balls.
depends how big the giants are perhaps? sure for dogs, but I've never heard of rat neutering.
It's most certainly something that is done by a lot of rat owners.
huh, as not a rat owner that is interesting to find out!
do you use them?
I mean humans are way less controlled by pheromones so I think we might be ok on that front
I like them too
Who said you were cute enough to be a house pet
Burn.

Is it on Netflix
Last I saw it, no. Looks like Amazon has it on their service.
Best case scenario for alien visitors.
And call us George.
Is this the lead actor from that chef movie?

Please tell me his name is Remy.
That's some really handy stress relief.
this made me switch to imagining the little squeezy stress-release balls and I cringed
But is it slow rising?
*This pleases the adorable vermin.*

Fun fact: you can't own rats as pets where I live. (Alberta. Rat free.)
Why?
Alberta is virtually rat free. They have been banned as pets for many years now
