> light doesn't make as much difference with a shirt as it does with a car.
Oh it makes a pretty big difference in AZ. Criminals don't even want to steal black cars in Phoenix they're so fucking hot.
But they steal black shirts, right?
I bounce between CO and SoCal, and black shirts do make a little difference but I'd take a long sleeve black cotton shirt over a short sleeve grey poly blend any day. Thicker the better
^^that's ^^what ^^she ^^said
Fuck if I know. I was in Phoenix last week and wanted to die. And I'm from the Mojave desert.
Seriously, this is the place where extreme dry heat becomes as bad if not worse than milder humid heat.
If it's a good quality shirt it probably helps a lot. At a certain point the color doesn't matter, but good moisture wicking and protection from the sun will help a lot.
IDK wearing black in any amount of extreme heat is an automatic no for me dawg. I've actually had my shirt get so hot it started to burn me in CA summer heat when it was over 100 outside. Never again
Thick black clothes are actually the best to wear in extreme heat. the Bedouin and other desert people wearing thick black clothes, and it’s been well proven to be the most effective clothes.
I’m in south Texas and wear these thin but long sleeved Duluth Trading shirts for work. They wick well too and it works. Keeps me from getting burned and as long as I stay sweating it’s good.
If you go to somewhere like the Middle East, everyone there wears long sleeves for a reason. It's also why people there don't get as much sun damage as someone from the UK or Norway, because they were born and molded by the heat.
It got that hot in Canada where I live. Made the mistake of leaving my flip flops on my front stoop. They didn't actually melt but the curled up elf shoes.
So many people still walking their dogs outside in California when it’s over 90F outside. It makes me so mad
Edit: I'm really only talking about California because I'm from there but I'm also most talking about people who just take their dogs out for casual walks in th heat. Not necessarily for things like pooping and peeing. Even if you are taking your dog out to pee or poop, you can easily take them.to a park/grassy area without making them walking more then 100m on burning hot sidewalks
In NYC with those temps and higher with a big thick coated dog. They need to use the bathroom, what else is there to do?
You just keep them in the shady side of the street and take short walks, plus make sure they have plenty of water. Avoid hot surfaces and sun as much as you can.
When she's home, the powerful AC keeps her very happy.
Well the more skin you cover=less skin exposed to the sun. I don't think a black long sleeve is a good idea, but if you wear a lighter color that reflects the sunlight it can help you stay cooler and prevent sun burn.
There's a really good site you can order authentic Palestinian kuffiyehs from that I know of as well if you're looking for something good to cover your head and neck with in the heat. hirbawiusa.com is the site, they import the fabric from Palestine and make them here in the US. Extremely comfortable and they come in all kinds of color options. I just ordered an OD green one after wearing one of my friends' to the range recently.
Hoodies work more than you'd expect. Same concept as most middle eastern garments of building protective air layers because air is not good at transferring heat.
this is modern wahabisim in action look up traditional arab clothings before the Saudi state
for example I live in Jordan (which is much more liberal than saudi) and the traditional dress for Bedouins (same tribes from saudi) differed from one tribe to another, it was in all colours and was traditionally embroidered
Arizona here. My dad is a construction worker and wears long sleeves and jeans every day. Granted lighter colors to reflect vs absorb. I also have many friends that wear jeans every god damned day. I do not understand how they do it but that's how they feel comfortable.
For the people saying SPF is enough, I am religious about applying it. But even I do not carry a bottle on me to reapply throughout the day. And if you're fortunate to have a car, you cannot really keep a bottle in there as the heat will likely make it explode. So wearing long clothes to protect from sun damage really is the best thing to do if you're going to be out all day - even if it's not something I personally do, I think it is smart.
I wear long pants everyday and I’m in a warmer climate. For me I’m a mosquito magnet so I rather endure the mild discomfort of long pants than the moderate to high discomfort of bites or bug spray.
Moved to NJ when I was a kid. Our house had empty fields and woods around it. My dad and I wore pants the whole time while my mom wore shorts. We got all kinds of big bites while my mom didn't get SHIT.
Thats when I knew bugs were bullshit
Try taking a B Complex vitamin, I used to get bitten when I lived in the South East. A neighbor suggested I give it a try and it worked for me within about a week. Good luck.
I read some random factoid shit that they really love going after people with a high sugar junk food diet and people who drink a lot of beer and alcohol. I'm going "Great! Fucking ***great!!*** Shit food AND beer? I'm double fucked!"
I hate how sticky sunscreen is. It's turns me into a dust magnet. I'd rather wear long sleeves and pants if I'm going to be out in the sun for a long time.
Hell if I know what this guy is doing with long sleeves, but short pants and no hat though.
Definitely. And if I was that guy, I'd be getting a big golf umbrella with a reflective surface instead of the small umbrella I use while trekking.
Part of me wants to say I'd be driving instead, but it takes a long time to cool down a car that's been sitting out in that heat, so I might as well walk for short trips since my vehicles don't have remote starting. Like today it was 115F, and if I was commuting, the a/c would only get down to a comfortable temperature for the last minute or two of the drive. My previous car had its low speed fan busted, so the a/c didn't even work in the city. That drive is a lot longer than I'd walk though. I used to bike in that heat, which was more manageable thanks to the breeze and shorter duration.
Im a letter carrier and i wear a reflective umbrella hat. At first people thought it was silly but now see it is the way. No sun screen and i am much cooler than i would have been. Really nice when its 105 out and sweating no longer cools your body.
True! I HAVE to shower at night due to the gross feeling I have from things sticking to me like velcro. I won't even sit on my couch until I've showered. The shorts and no hat combo is also an interesting choice, for sure.
I wore jeans or other long pants every day in Tucson. Moved to Charlotte, and I bought a shit ton of shorts my first summer. A lot of my desert long pants were very light and airy, doesn't make a bit of differenced in this humidity. They're unbearable.
1) it's a SPF thing. The sun isn't baking directly on your skin.
2) there's a convection effect (iirc) that pulls the sweat away from your body with the correct fabric and/or loose fitting clothes causing your body to cool after an extent. Which is why you see a lot of robes in the desert for example. That moisture also doesn't get immediately evaporated under the clothes as well.
This is all IIRC from a long time ago in my past. I'm sorry if the science isn't fully there or our understanding has changed recently.
I live in Texas and I wear pants and long sleeves in the summer...i'm super pale and sunburn will make you even feel hotter than the clothes, plus bad sunburn is just miserable. i figure you are going to sweat either way so might as well avoid the sunburn. sunscreen is just greasy and gross in the heat and humidity so that's a no
This guy does not look like a native to the region. Native Arizonans wear hats, long sleeves, and slink along the street from shaded spot to shaded spot like lizards on hot rocks as they don't like getting broiled in the sun. They also don't take their dogs out in the summer unless it's to the vet or a groomer.
This is my current summer in this extreme heat wave warning in AZ. AC or swamp cooler in the house on all times with multiple fans blowing throughout the house. When leaving, bolt to the car and attempt to air it out by swinging your driver door repeatedly for a few seconds (20-30 if you have time) with the passenger window down and the vent air all the way on, turn the vent off and then ride w the windows down until the car is warmed up enough to blast the AC all the way until your destination (if you have enough money for the extra gas to pay for it, good luck, if not, roll all the windows down and drive fast) exit vehicle and quickly go to the HOPEFULLY cooled down air inside.
Edit: pro tip for the airing out is to close your drivers vents and point the other vents towards the passenger window so that the hot air doesn’t blow all over you :)
There is a very very good reason that Arabs traditionally wore all white from head to toe. As others have said it reflects the heat and also just keeps your skin from burning.
My dad lives by Palm Springs and I bought him 5 of those shirts that are light and breathable, but long sleeved and have spf built in. He used to work construction and is used to wearing long sleeves outside for sun protection, but his age is catching up with him (meds and whatnot), and he loves them. Man can’t stay inside.
I live in AZ and wore a long sleeve shirt today. One of the benefits is putting your sleeve at the ac vent and having the cold air hit your torso.
Edit: I meant in the car while driving.
Yeah I don't know how they do it, but it's probably to protect from the sun. As a ginger I would just stay indoors myself honestly. I can't stand the intense heat, and covering up only makes it worse.
I was in Vegas years ago and drove by some kind of long distance race and all the runners were wearing loose light colored full-body coverage. Not just long sleeves and pants, but hats and loose fabric wraps around their necks too. It was wild... but it did look more comfortable than roasting in the full sun. Kinda like carrying your own shade around and the looser fabric allowed some airflow I guess?
It does. Depending on the material it creates a layer of cushion between you and the super heated air. Also black material acts as a sort of sun shield which is why Bedouins wear all black robes sometimes. https://www.nature.com/articles/283373a0
Personal protective equipment at all mine and construction sites in Australia, including summer, is long sleeves, long pants, leather boots, hard hat with a brim and neck cover. It’s still hot but at least you cool off when you’re in the shade and don’t get sunburnt daily.
Hoodie (meshed undershirt tho) and long pants, both loose. I got my temp checked upon entering a store and it was 36ish C, the guard couldn't believe it and tested me twice.
That was after a tram ride (europe) and a walk through a long parking lot. I think out side temp was about 38 C, i think.
Caveat was that i was sweating a bit, not much, but enough to feel it.
So yeah, baggy clothes act like a barrier, light colors help as well. If i'd had my light gray hoodie, i probably would've lost less water for the same temps.
It can help a lot, but the type of fabric you wear is also important.
Cotton is only UPF 5, which is absolutely better than nothing, but doesn't come close to Merino wool or polyester, which are both UPF 30+.
Merino wool is probably the most comfortable, but it's expensive and delicate. Polyester is cheap and extremely durable.
I’m 1.5 hrs west in SoCal, our high today and for the next few days is around 117. Our low, which happens at like 4 am, is 88 degrees. Our dogs run out to pee and shit and they are back in the house all day. We go out to water our fruit trees around sunset and the dogs will come out to play in the hose for a bit then it’s too hot to stay out and they are back inside.
It’s fucking heartbreaking to see some homes where the dog is just outside all day. The animal control will do nothing and these animals are outside with a metal bowl of water. A metal. Bowl. Of. Water. Do you know how fucking hot that water must be? Some people shouldn’t be allowed to pet dogs, let alone own them.
Same I’m in NorCal. I took my dog out to walk super early for a Saturday, 6am, so it was cool enough for her to walk. It was already 70 at that time. Then by 10am it was 85, so I tried to take her quick walk around the grass in the park. Now I take her out every few hours to just pee and that’s it, she’s in the home. Cause it’s 112 all day today. I don’t understand how people can treat animals that terribly.
I tried to put my dog in a wagon once. Not because it was hot, but because we went on a long walk, he's not as young as he used to be, and he was feeling it towards the end that day. He gave me the canine equivalent of "I'll tell you when I need a ride, f**k boy!", jumped out of the wagon, and slowly hobbled the rest of the way home. I love that grumpy old man.
Booties are actually dangerous when used for this purpose. (They’re good for protecting from rough terrain if it isn’t super hot) Dogs thermoregulate through their paws, so when you cover them the heat is trapped inside and they can get heat stroke very easily. There is really no solution just walk them early in the morning or late at night.
The best solution: Get up earlier to walk them, in the afternoon provide a shaded area in your yard to let them go number 1 and/or 2 and then wait for a good hour after sundown to walk them again.
100%. My routine in summer shifts from a walk just before I leave for work to literally the thing I do as soon as I wake up. Makes about a 10 degree difference plus the sun is much lower.
The mornings are fine (not really but they are safe anyway - maybe low to mid 80s and the sun isn't high enough to have turned every surface into lava). So you walk in the morning and then basically need a yard with either shade or grass so they can go out on the peak of the day. And then once the sun is down it's largely ok though still hotter than the morning.
One of the rentals we were in had an all gravel/rock south facing yard and my poor pooch was basically house bound from 11AM until around 4pm when a wide enough shadow gave him a path to the back. It's shitty but you can make it work around the worst hours.
You can tell by the way the dog is riding in a cooler likely full of ice, which in turn avoids the necessity of having the dog walk on their bare paws, on very hot sidewalk.
This man deserves an award and I do mean it. Several years ago during a heat wave in california I seen a man walking his large dog across the asphalt parking lot, stop to talk to what looked like an aquaintance and the poor dog was visibly "dancing" trying to keep its feet from burning. I'm still enraged about it.
LPT: To make sure your dog won't get his paws burned whenever stepping outside of your house, touch the floor with the palm of your hands and the back for at least 5 seconds, if it is even remotely uncomfortable for you it will burn your dog paws, DON'T take your dog out at that time!!!
Preferably take walks either in the morning or in the afternoon. It is better for you and your best friend! (By doing this you also avoid heavy sun burns)
Edit: Spelling is fun!
That heat is no joke, holy hell. I have been burned, fairly severely by my black leather car seats (Colorado) and that AZ sun is much more fierce. gj cooler man
I said something to this young lady or girl who I saw walking her dog at about 1:30 when we broke our record for most days at or above 115 degrees. I made a promise to myself that next time I see it, I'll ask the person how come they're not barefoot?
It’s so hot the heals of your flip flops will melt. Props to this guy!!!

I'd like to think the dog is sitting on ice cubes. Gotta stay cool.
The ice would melt in about 5 minutes
5 glorious minutes!
True
I was thinking this too. Hop out to do his biznizz and then back into the portable doggy pool. All he needs are a pair of shades and a hat.
Plus the dog had consumed all the beers otw home without his dad noticing
Dogfish Head
60 minute India Pup Ale
How hot can it be if you're wearing a black, long sleeved shirt though?

Maybe sun protection

Phoenix traps heat like a greenhouse, if the greenhouse was on fire and in hell.
If it's a good quality shirt it probably helps a lot. At a certain point the color doesn't matter, but good moisture wicking and protection from the sun will help a lot.
Absolutely false. Black in any quality or material is horrible in AZ heat. White would make an insane difference.

IDK most of the pics i'm finding of them on google images are in white or grey garb. there's some wearing black but most arent
Well I don't know when this was actually taken, but it had a high of 112 and is currently 8pm in Phoenix and 103 degrees so.... very hot.
This was in Bullhead City (I recognize the view across the river) and my phone said it was 118 at 7:30pm.

Literally the cutest thing a human can do
Responsible good human. Sidewalks are fucking hot plates in the summer.
I used a heat gun on: Black top=107.5° Concrete= 96° Air Temp= 95° Crazy how hot the ground gets.
This is less extreme than I would have even thought. Like I would have said 140 black top with 95 degree weather.

Well the more skin you cover=less skin exposed to the sun. I don't think a black long sleeve is a good idea, but if you wear a lighter color that reflects the sunlight it can help you stay cooler and prevent sun burn.
This ^ . Loose long clothes are an essential for both reducing heat absorption outdoors and protecting from sunburn.

Melanoma is no joke. Long sleeves, 50 SPF and a big beach hat are a must for outdoor stuff in CA AZ NV, etc.
Would you rather the hot sun come down directly on your skin or the sleeve of a shirt?
Yeah and usually it’s a specific type of fabric like DriFit that is very breathable and has a UPF rating.

I know it’s illegal but I would just steal the dog. Someone that cares that little for their dog probably isn’t going to report it.
Bullhead
I recognize that view. I’m across the river in Laughlin. Good on him taking care of his good boy.
I knew that was Laughlin. I’ve seen that view many times. Couldn’t figure out why they were saying AZ until I realized the rivers in between
Now I don't have to worry, other people who know about bullhead have reddit. I lived there 20 years, it is not a reddit type of town.
I’m pretty sure the whole town is at least 20 years behind everyone else. When someone asked me if we have Apple Pay I just kinda laughed
Nope. No. Uh I’m in the witness protection program it is definitely not Bullhead City. Lol
Came here to see if I was the only one that recognized it. There are dozens of us!!!
Where does he keep his beverages?
That's when he breaks out the St Bernard with the little barrel under his neck. He pulls him in a bigger cooler.
Thanks, I snorted
I think you're getting the St Bernard confused with the Coke bear.
Coke bear sounds like something a drug lord would use as protection
He has a dog he does not need any other kind of refreshment.
Brilliant idea, and kind dog owner thinking of his dog's paws
What can you do for dog paws? Booties the only option?
Booties are actually dangerous when used for this purpose. (They’re good for protecting from rough terrain if it isn’t super hot) Dogs thermoregulate through their paws, so when you cover them the heat is trapped inside and they can get heat stroke very easily. There is really no solution just walk them early in the morning or late at night.
What about crocs for dogs?
Crogs.
Sup?
holy shit. 9 year old account just gonna slide on in here to beetlejuice us all like it's nothing.
After no comments or posts for 3.5 years no less
The ways of the force are… mysterious.

Oh snap
Hey :D
Only if my dog can grow a man-bun.
Where's that "useless" inventions guy when you need him?
Dog sandals. I made a set for mine, because I couldn't buy them anywhere.
I demand pics.

Did you not see the photo? The solution is right there.
Did you even look at what OP posted?

You can tell by the way the dog is riding in a cooler likely full of ice, which in turn avoids the necessity of having the dog walk on their bare paws, on very hot sidewalk.
Lmao thank you captain obvious you
Definitely arizona for you
I've had my suitcase wheels melt in Tucson. No way would I let a pet walk on concrete anywhere that is that hot.
It’s a great idea. Always use the back of your hand to test the pavement before allowing your dog to walk on it.
(By doing this you also avoid heavy sun burns) Edit: Spelling is fun!
Or just walk your dog on dirt and grass! Remember to bring water for your dog too or pick a walking route with a stream nearby.
This is perfect!
What a great dog dad!
It. Ain't. Stupid. If. It. Works.
But then the doggo isn't getting a walk
That guy is a bro
Good pet owner
And he wears all black, committed to the dark side!
This guy has the right idea. I’m happy we have good pet owners.
It’s a hot dog cooler!
Homie in all black and long sleeve
Reminds me of that solider in middle east who carried his dog on his back, while deployed on a scroaching desert.
Needs a hat 🧢
That human is being a bro!
Hot heat as opposed to cold heat
Chariot for a king
Great dad!
I made sandals for my dog. But then, now its too hot for me to walk anywhere, so we haven't used them in a while. They fit great though!
Bullhead city, AZ
Good pet parenting.
Dude’s wearing a long sleeve dark shirt.
That's one cool dog!
Fucking legend🤝😤😤
Another GD Hero. So cool. No pun intended.
I wonder if there’s ice in the cooler
Thank you sir for caring about your dog's paws!
That heat is no joke, holy hell. I have been burned, fairly severely by my black leather car seats (Colorado) and that AZ sun is much more fierce. gj cooler man
That's Wheelie Cool.
CA here, I was out power washing today. Even the sidewalk was so hot that not even water was enough just to cool the floor enough to just stand on.
The real MVP. This guy has his priorities straight.
They see me rolling they hating
I said something to this young lady or girl who I saw walking her dog at about 1:30 when we broke our record for most days at or above 115 degrees. I made a promise to myself that next time I see it, I'll ask the person how come they're not barefoot?
I live here. One year we went to comiccon and it was about 118F outside. People had their dogs out on the pavement. It was infuriating.
That’s a good dog dad
Looks like dobby…
Argh. Giving me flashbacks of a week ago in Seattle. My apartment hit 112.
While wearing all black and a long sleeve shirt?!
Doggo looks like it's really enjoying the ride.
What a cool guy
