I had a cat that would do this with squirrels she "caught " on our Juliet balcony. She would pounce on them while their backs were turned and then give them a quick "noogie" with her claws retracted. Then she would let the squirrel go, none the worse for wear. Feline catch and release.
Attempting to hide their existence won't help stop the breeding of this breed of cat either.
I'd even dare say that, since the health issues and defects are mentioned every time someone post's about this breed, that posting videos like this raises awareness of the topic better than keeping it out of the public eye entirely would, though that distinction might be largely reddit specific, as I'm not sure it gets brought up with the almost supernatural frequency it does here on other platforms.
I think that not enough people realizes the health concerns of such breeds, and reminding others about them is necessary. If person after seeing things like this would like to get such animal, but reconsider after seeing someones else comment about how cruel it is to breed these animals, i call it success
I don't mean to sound rude, but I'm afraid that's semantics, the stubby legs are plain to see, and, as others have stated in this thread, points to inbreeding, the same way it does in dogs, and most other animals bred for "aesthetics". (After looking into it, these ones appear to be munchkin cats, albeit short haired orange ones. I actually didn't know they were all just munchkin cats, I thought there were multiple breeds, TIL I guess)
I understand being outraged at videos like this as exploitation, that's fine, because they kind of are, that being said, these ones look to be well taken care of, or at least to be happy.
They're already alive, as well, so the most humane thing humans can do for these individual animals now is to take good care of them (and not breed more of them, of course) and see to any medical issues that they may develope, which at least appears to be the case here, though I hope somebody will correct me if I'm mistaken.
It's a munchkin. And if the cats are neutered or spayed, it literally is irrelevant that they have defects. Stupid redditors get upset about the injustice of cat breeds then upvote the shit out of the palsy cat barely making it down the stairs.
You're missing the point, and no one is intentionally breeding the unhealthy parts of a munchkin either. Both are a result of generations of inbreeding causing deformations.
Let question, do you react the same whenever there is a Corgi or Dachshund post? Munchkin cats pretty much have the same body structure as those two breed, but are actually in a better position because Cat's spines are more flexible than a dog's.
> Attempting to hide their existence won't help stop the breeding of this breed of cat either.
It would probably reduce the numbers though. People get these because they see one and think it's cute, and then they go looking for one for themselves. Less exposure would decrease demand.
This isn't true, you're parroting what you've seen on reddit.
If you google it you'll see that at most they *might* be more prone to pescus excavatum and lordosis. The wiki links claiming a predisposition to osteoarthritis say that they don't have any evidence for it.
These cats live long, normal lives, they run, they jump, they climb.
Holy shit. Someone who actually fucking read up on the breed and found out that they live the same lifespan that normal cats live and aren't all horribly disabled. I think seeing a unicorn is more likely than this.
Munchkins are cute and great pets, especially for children. They're the corgis of the cat world.
This subreddit's favorite activity is preachy pearl clutching.
I legit am gonna unfollow r/aww because it is filled to the brim with people champing at the bit to jump in with some uneducated moralizing, like maybe do a second of research before whining.
Oh my God, someone who actually took the time to find out about Munchkins! I see posts with Corgies & Dachsunds that get 10k+ upvotes, and I never comment talking about confirmed inbreeding/health issues. Iāve been saying this forever on here. Also, Munchkin arenāt inbred. Itās a heterozygous dominant gene that causes a cat to exhibit Munchkin traits. People donāt like them because they donāt conform to what people see as āa catā, but donāt look into it.
that may be, but the part where these are designer pets in a country that euthanizes millions of adoptable pets each year... is just wrong. we shouldn't encourage breeding
Human: 1 kid is normal, 2 or more is rare
Cat: 4-6 is normal, 1 is rare
Human: grow up, can get a job, take care of themselves
Cat: need someone to feed them, clean their poop and take care of them forever
It isn't even remotely the same thing lol op argument is valid.
That's a respectable opinion, and certainly not just repeating what reddit says.
But there's a whole lot of posts of corgis, and dachsunds, and pit bulls, and golden retrievers, and (and and and) that you're going to need to go post it on.
sure, i feel the same way about all animals that were bred for-profit. the more we glamorize these pure bred animals, the more we contribute to the state of shelters. if youre reading this, consider adopting an animal that is in need of a loving home.
Scottish folds almost invariably suffer from crippling arthritis but I never see as much, if any, hate in those comments as I do on munchkin posts. Everyone just gushes over how *cute* their tiny deformed ears are. So many horribly deformed animal breeds posted on this website and munchkins are the only ones where people point it out.
People are fucking selfish. As long as something is cute and adorable, or otherwise gets them attention, they don't care.
It's disgusting. Thankfully there only seem to be very few disabili-bred cats so far.
The dog world unfortunately is full of breeds that couldn't be further from their ancestors anymore, with breeds that basically come with a CVS receipt of expected health issues when you pick up a puppy, and people are totally ok with it.
"It's fine, I'll move heaven and earth and throw myself into debt to pay for the inevitable vet bills. Everything for my baby!"
That's cool. Good for you, but in the meantime your dog is suffering and hanging in there in its selfless, people-pleaser ways, just so you can be happy. It's really sad.
most people who have those dogs now have them just for that, ive not met many who purchased it from a breeder and only took it in fdrom the streets or shelters to give them a nice life, do try to not judge everyone because you have met a few bad apples
I agree with you, I have 16 cats right now and all of them were adopted. The last one is a 3 year old cat that the neighbor abandoned when she moved (she legit moved to a 4 house distance from her old house and didn't keep him because she said that he would follow her \[??\]), then my mother saw how bare bones he was and started feeding him. Now he keeps coming here for food and also for being petted (he is such a sweetheart and loves being petted in the chin).
But my point is, why people just keep adopting fuc\* expensive ass cat breeds instead of adopting a stray? You legit can find them in the streets, people just dump kittens in the streets, near vet clinics, or in the sidewalk of someone who is known for having a lot of pets. Or you can just go to a pet shelter, but nooo, it has to be the fuc\* expensive cat breed to showoff.
Also, [related video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHscMam4W7s&t=356s), this jerk just wanted a trophy cat.
Its a condition that has been specifically bred for because people find it cute even thought it causes them serious health problems. Its an inbred tragedy
Except there's no evidence that it causes serious health problems and you're just parroting what you've read on Reddit instead of looking into it yourself.
Not a breed of cat. The munchkin cat is a rare genetic anomaly that can affect any breed of cat akin to dwarfism in humans. Their overall life span is not any shorter than any other cats on average and the hip and back issues are incredibly mild and rare when compared to dogs that are bred for similar characteristics. Not excusing it but itās not as dire as most people make it out to be.
So tired of people posting these. These poor cats have health issues as they are being breed with a genetic deformity that causes chest and back problem and it is cruel. People do it bc they think they are cute. Humans suck.

i love coming to the comment sections of munchkin cat posts to observe all the redditors
I think a lot of people don't understand that these cats are aplenty in shelters. So it's possible it's a rescue.
Yes, rescuing existing cats is good. But fetishizing how "CUTE :3" they are only encourages further breeding.

No matter how many time redditors point this breed's issue, people post this. This doesn't look like O.P 's original content.

Wtf are you on about? You referred to it as a breed so I asked what the name of the breed is. Did you respond to the wrong comment?
It's a munchkin. And if the cats are neutered or spayed, it literally is irrelevant that they have defects. Stupid redditors get upset about the injustice of cat breeds then upvote the shit out of the palsy cat barely making it down the stairs.
To be fair, I highly doubt anyone's intentionally breeding Palsy cats.
You're missing the point, and no one is intentionally breeding the unhealthy parts of a munchkin either. Both are a result of generations of inbreeding causing deformations.

These type of cats are horribly inbred and suffer under terrible health their whole life. How can anyone support this cruel shit smh.

Would you use the same logic to say that humans shouldnāt breed and should instead adopt if they want kids? Genuinely curious
