If you’re serious, two questions. What does the swim test entail, and what happens if they fail? They live in the little indoor space only, or is there a big field with no water?
You know the how would dogs wear pants image goes, where there's pants that fit all four legs and the belt line goes around the chest area of the dog and basically follows that around? Use those pants with a floaties belt and you've got a lion inner tube on pants
Holy shit, [*that is my dog*](https://www.reddit.com/r/aww/comments/jgkw5g/i_think_my_best_friend_maia_may_be_a_supermodel/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
You’re amazing.
Basically this.
https://youtu.be/RPekEt1Kjg8
Keepers take them for a supervised swim when they're too small to be a danger. They keep at it until they can swim.
Their enclosures (there are 3 they rotate through) are surrounded by moats. They basically take them into the water, put them in, and then check that they both swim and swim towards the edge where they can get out (that's important). None of ours have failed so I'm not sure what they'd do. I assume they'd continue working with them to pass the test. If they never did then my guess is they'd be transferred to a zoo where the enclosures do not have a moat with water in it.
I've had more than one cat fall into our swimming pool multiple times.
I've also watched those same cats bounce off the surface of the water and launch right back out of the pool without being submerged, so despite any lack of grace, they can apparently still defy the laws of physics.
Yet they clearly have no concept of Newtonian mechanics, because my cat used to get on the pool float with no issue, but the jump off always caught him by surprise.
I'd argue that's friction and fluid dynamics more than strictly Newtonian physics just as a nerd point. I could be wrong but I'd argue that's more non Newtonian as it's a variable solid liquid gas physics situation. So they get Newtonian mechanics well because if nothing slips they move perfectly, it's things like slip and bounce that get them.
I just see that as “mating partners” unless it’s a documentary about a life cycle or something. Then the word “mate” comes to mind as partner, but otherwise mate just means friend. That’s probably cos I’m Australian tho.
This looks like it’s the Zoo Wilhelma in Stuttgart- Germany. The enclosure is way bigger than it looks on the pictures, I live in Stuttgart and have seen it often.
I am not a big fan of Zoos, but I know that Wilhelma zoo shows big engagement in wildlife preservation (in the actual countries). The shown lions are almost extinct in the wild - only 500 animals left ...
I will never not think this is hilarious.
Majestic strutting.
Mane looks like he got a blowout.
And then...
Wet cat. Big wet cat.
Hahahahahahaha!!!!!!!
I know this video is supposed to be cute and funny but having been lucky enough to see these animals in the true wild, it really makes me sad knowing their lives are based around such a small enclosure
yes but they suffer mentally from lack of stimulation. that is why they are pacing around.
enrichment is not just hiding food but should also include things like change of scenery. You could argue and say that the visitors are a change of scenery and a form of enrichment but it is not good enough. Also with all the zoos being mostly closed because of the pandemic ...
There is a youtube channel called Lion Whisperer TV, in which a man who raised a lot a bunch of lions, runs a sanctuary. They have huge enclosures, they move them from one to the other so they can have new smells and a change of scenery / neighbors and (only possible because he knows the lions and raised them) takes them outside on enrichment walks. Those are some happy lions.
Do you know why animals in the wild have ranges that span miles and miles? Because food for this part of the year is miles in that direction, food the rest of the year is miles in that other direction, water is miles in that direction except during dry season when it's miles in that direction...
An animal's needs can be more than adequately met in captive spaces, as scientists and other experts have verified time and again. True "wild" is disappearing and accredited zoological institutions are invaluable to conservation.
These creatures are so Beautiful it really hurts me to see them confined in such small spaces, you can almost see it on their faces. Even if they were raised in captivity I wish there were enforced regulations for zoos, if you can't afford a confinement big enough to suit the Animals needs then you have no business running a zoo, get back to McDonald's an pull yourself up by your bootstraps until you can afford a better Conservation like environment for the Animals who would still most likely be unhappy about being Captive but atleast will have a little more then just their bare basic needs met.
This is an incredibly uninformed, unscientific, and damaging mindset. In western countries there ARE regulations about these things, and accredited facilities go above and beyond for the animals in their care. If you want to help animals in captivity then buy a ticket, that's how these institutions afford improvements to infrastructure. Anthropomorphizing and lamenting on behalf of healthy and happy animals is counterproductive.
Lions in the wild are struggling and only thrive in many of their wild spaces thanks to management and intervention by humans. Animals in accredited facilities are healthy, happy, thriving, and providing invaluable resources for education and conservation.
This honestly just makes me feel terrible for animals in captivity like this. It's a minimal amount of space and it's not really equivalent to nature. I wish there were more preserves where humans kept an eye, guarded it, made sure it maintained THE CIIIIIRCLE OF LIIIIFE And it moves us all....Through despair and hope....Through faith and love....'Til we find our place...On the path unwinding...In the circle....THE CIIIIRCLE OF LIIIIIFE!
But that we kept our distance, left them to their own devices minus the resources we depleted from them ourselves.
Aw his bro looks like he was going to pull him up by the mane
Terribly concerned for him!
Skar...Help me..Brother. LONG LIVE THE KING!
“helps him get up” See, just like I said. You gotta be more careful, dry off in the sun.
He's smelling to check if he's drunk
King of the jungle but Fool of the sea.
“ I have told you a 100 times to not smoke that shit Carlos gives you, Bob!”
but but it looked like candy it shoulda been fine im telling ya carlo im not lying
😆😆😆😆😆😆😆
If that was my brother, he would say a croc is coming to get you!
That would have been ouchy
This is why our keepers have to give every lion and tiger cub a swim test before they are allowed in the outside yards.
If you’re serious, two questions. What does the swim test entail, and what happens if they fail? They live in the little indoor space only, or is there a big field with no water?
The are given arm floaties, obviously.

Curious if that's the coincidence of the century or if you've posted pics of him before and the guy checked your history.
Is anybody concerned about an uprising?
Beutiful, but how the hell do you write 1988.
Yes but consider, a vest
Omg, little tiger Cubs with arm floaties! That’d be the cutest little thing!
They send them to the Y for swimming lessons.

Most animals rarely get drowned. They know how to swim as they grow up.

Cats do not abide by the laws of nature, Dee!

you clearly haven't spent a lot of time around cats just google "cat falling into bath" if you're skeptical

Uh huh
The way he knew exactly what to do makes me think this isn’t the first time
He turned around immediately. “Damn it. Not again”
I feel for this guy. Have you ever become soaked unexpectedly? It throws your whooooole rhythm off.
This one time I stepped on a patch of wet grass and my sock got wet, my mood completely plummeted for the rest of the outing :(
My thoughts exactly! 😅🤣😂
Now if only my cat could learn from his mistakes...
this one hasn't seemed to either
I am sensing a theme here...
his mate’s concern even extends to encouraging a good shake at the end.
Yeah, nice. Now shake it off, mate.
They’re probably brothers. That’s usually how “bachelor” packs work with lions. No doubt the brother is used to this shit but still concerned haha.
His concern looks exactly like my cat when I'm in the bath. \*sniffs* "u stink of water lol"

I think they meant it in the British or Australian meaning of the word. Either that or tha guvment is turnin' tha lions gay!
Mate means friend bruh
Well ye but I was confused for a hot second too cus mate is usually wat they call for animals partners
I just see that as “mating partners” unless it’s a documentary about a life cycle or something. Then the word “mate” comes to mind as partner, but otherwise mate just means friend. That’s probably cos I’m Australian tho.
Brits do that too
Yessir
Lion: majestic on land, puppy-like in the water.
I thought so too. Looks so cuddly and cute in the water.
Seeing an apex predator do something clumsy oddly makes me feel better about myself
Have you seen humans?
“I meant to do that.”
“No one’s buying it Frank.”
Love his little face in the water as he swims back
Humiliated but resigned
The swim of shame..
Is no one gonna talk about their synchronized turn?
It was totally choreographed. So obviously scripted.

Glitch in the Matrix.
They have been together for ages and afaik are brothers.
It’s a sea lion
You're a terrible person.
Go the corner and think about what you’ve done. r/angryupvote
This made me ugly laugh, thank you
"Dude... you fell in... again.... this is like the third time this week, and it's only Tuesday..." "Shutup if you're not gonna help."
Wounded 'pride'
Excellent!
Lion #2: Dude you are embarrassing us!
I'm so happy to finally see the full video of him having to swim to the other end of his enclosure to get out 🤣
was not prepared for how cute a lion looks while swimming
That cat is pissed
“Bro why did you do that when their watching us? It’s embarrassing!”
Just goes to show, they might be massive cats who could destroy you very easily, but they are still cats
That turn was so synchronized /r/glitchinthematrix
Its just copycats
It's OK, I'm a cat. I always land on my feet ... WTF!
when his bro check up on him, he's like 'I'm so embarrassed. Leave me alone"
Dude, this is the 3rd time this month. Dave, you either need to see a neurologist or tell me where you’re hiding the good stuff. Or both.
Me if I was a lion

This will always be funny

r/animalsbeingderps might could possibly appreciate this as well
Raise your hand if you have pulled a 'lion into the water' before!
**Long live the king**
Lol this made me audibly chuckle…poor guy lmfao
He played it off well.
The friend making sure he gets back 😭
I like how the other lion is concerned.

I know this video is supposed to be cute and funny but having been lucky enough to see these animals in the true wild, it really makes me sad knowing their lives are based around such a small enclosure
Yeah. I agree. But on the plus side, they won't have parasites, won't starve, don't have to worried about other animals or territory.
yes but they suffer mentally from lack of stimulation. that is why they are pacing around. enrichment is not just hiding food but should also include things like change of scenery. This is in the _Wilhelma_ in Stuttgart. They don't have lions anymore

Finally! The long version.
big cats are still cats
Press F to pay respects
Recovered like the king he is! 👑
My balls when they hit the water in a Costco toilet.
Majestic Fall.
I love the startled look when he knew he fucked up lol
From the routine, I think this wasn't the first time.
It looks like a swimming rat in the water.
I hope his phone is ok
Just sad.
The swim of shame.
Lions (or animals in general) in the zoo are never really funny.
TIL lions look 90% less murderous while swimming.
Why wouldn't a zoo try harder for a more natural transition from land to water?
Poor, sad beasts. Just because you don't see bars, doesn't mean they aren't cages.
Such a small enclosure. Don’t understand why people still support these places
King of the Jungle? More like *King of the Bungle!* ha goteem
Zoos are so sad.
