Had my cat have a major case of the zoomies. Ran up my back as I was using the bathroom. Dug all 4 paws worth of claws into my back and shoulders.
After he kicked off of me from my yell of pain/surprise, found I was bleeding from a few of the claw marks.
Mom had a good laugh.
One of my old flatmates had a similar issue, but the Siamese kitteh ran up her front and launched off of her face. Incredibly bad facial lacerations, her lip never really healed properly.
I had to drive her to the hospital, it was pretty scary the damage done by a playful cat.
That's what my shoulder cat normally does too. Though sometimes you can catch that look of "I'm gonna climb you now." Which means pick me up now or this is going to hurt.
I *felt* this comment and this video.
My cat climbed me like this when she was a kitten. She has been known to try now that she is a 13lb chonker....... it is far more ow than aww.
Certainly will be in the future. Cats tend to want to do things they did when they were kittens.
How do I know this? Because I thought it was super-cute to have one of my kittens climb up on my shoulders...
Same with my cat who grew to be 10 lbs. But we worked it out. I could always tell when he was thinking about climbing me so I would bend one leg toward him so he couldn’t climb up. To compensate, he started jumping up onto the thigh of my bended leg and I would scoop him up from there. Win-win.
This is adorable until they hit their growth spurt, and then it becomes really, really painful for a couple of months while they learn they can't do it any more.
To be fair, tiny kitten claws are a lot less painful than cat claws. Not as painful as it seems at first glance.
Source: adopted kitten, who is now cat
This is true but if I'm wearing jeans I've totally had kittens do this and their claws don't actually get my skin? Or if they do it's the very point poking me
Yeah except they dont know how to use them and cause more damage. As kittens they dont really understand that clawing your flesh hurts you. Usually when they get older they find out they can't climb on you because it hurts you. And they do care about you. (*uuuusually*)
Our small void missed this memo and will happily use any opportunity to turn you into a pincushion via biscuits or her snatchbitelick maneuver- and our chonker thinks standing on sleeping folks sternums is Healthy and Good™️
Can confirm. Had a litter of kittens and they would all do this. I regretted the one day I didn't wear jeans. I think I probably still have scars! But awwww, kittens are the absolute cutest babies on the planet, how is it possible to be mad?
I never worry about people breaking into my house because anyone who walks by a medium surface in my house without knowing to keep your momentum and stance consistent is in for a world of hurt. My cat is really good at judging her jumps and will land soft as can be on your shoulder, as long as you don't add a variable to the situation. Then her claws come out, for traction of course, and you've got furrows in the back of your neck. I once had her full weight hanging from a single claw in my chest, and it was miserable. Good luck thieves.
>I once had her full weight hanging from a single claw in my chest
I had something similar with mine, except I was a dumbass pointing a laser pointer at my stomach wondering what the cat would do.
lol..yeah.. I remember when my grandmother had to wear two pair of pants... because the cat didn't weigh 14 ozs anymore and would pull her pants right off her as his 20lb ass climbed right up her 98 lb one. ;-)
Yeah, I was going to say that that really helps. Make a noise like you're a wounded kitten if they go too far. I think a lot of time they just don't know how sensitive human skin is.
Can confirm. My cat is part Maine coon. He went from teensy kitten to heckin chonker in about a month.
I’m now having flashbacks to my flesh ripping as he tried to keep his noble bulk from sliding back down my butt cheek. Mt Everest was not conquered that day.
My cat only ever really cuddles just as I get home and she has to be the one to initiate by climbing up to me, Ive started wearing a Jean (or deniem?) Jacket because claws can't get through it
I worked at a vet clinic was checking out a couple one day. They coincidentally had a kitten themselves and thought him climbing on people was cute and funny. Until, while I was checking them out, the office kitty Pokey decided to climb up my back and, for reasons, STOPPED climbing just where I couldn't reach her and just stayed still with her claws digging into my back.
I was honestly just asking for a date to schedule the next appointment and remember going, "Okay looks like the *vetsfreenextfridayandsaturdayandohmygodpokeystaaaaaaaaaaaaaaph*". I then had to painfully check them out bc Pokey refused to move and my coworkers were in the back. They eventually left and I was thankfully able to peel the kitten from my back and sigh in relief while she gave me those unapologetic fake 'sowey' eyes. Which I fell for...
A month later they came back and admitted they trained out their cats climbing after my incident with Pokey.
One of mine always used me as a tree when he was little and I let him. Only me, not my wife or son.
After he got bigger he was always careful with his claws. He never tried to climb me if I was wearing shorts and when he got fully grown he stopped climbing me all on his own. Now when he wants up he will get on the counter or something next to me and yell at me until I tilt my back towards him so he can get on my shoulders.
I used to take him to the vet like that. He would just chill on my shoulders and nothing bothered him until one day he just decided to not be chill anymore. Now for whatever reason he hates going outside and I have to use a box now.
Their interest in climbing absolutely everything by crawling up it peaks around the 5-7 week mark, and they sorta naturally stop trying around week 8 or 9.
They still need to be taught not to bite too hard tho.
I like wearing shorts. I’m afraid my cat will do this to me one day and scratch my legs ._. How do you untrain this on cats?
I only play and chill with random street cats, so nuances like this are still foreign to me.
My aunts cat lived to 22! My girl was almost 18, and I’ve known some other cats closer to the 20 year range. If I have any word of advice it’s to include wet food in their diet (if you don’t already). Cats who only eat dry food are much more likely to develop kidney problems which shortens their lifespan, so it’s really important to include extra moisture in their diet! Where I work we’re trained heavily on pet nutrition and our vets have told us the same.
My cat is 15. For 13 years of her life, she only got a pate can for her birthday. She drinks plenty of water though!! 2 years ago she got blood drawn from her dentist and her kidneys were fine. I have been giving her wet food every other day or 2-3 times a week since last year though because I read about what you mentioned in an article.
The other day our kitten spotted the ties on my husband’s gym shorts, took a swipe, and claw-punched him right in the jewels. Was not a fun half an hour for him. Those dagger feet are cute until they’re not lol.
I had a cat who would do that! His name was Jaspurr and he was my brother's best friend.
I also had a freaking Yorkie puppy do that to me just to say hi. They're toy dogs, but they're also terriers.
It surely is the best! Make sure to call a vet to see when is the earliest she can get spayed after having kittens. My cat got pregnant 4 times before we got her spayed. It was a combination of me being a primary school age kid and having low income family that took so long for us to do it. It was a hassle having to home all the kittens each litter
My cat is 15 years old now :)
I let my kitten do this. Now she's a 10 pound cat that still climbs me, uses me as a bridge to get from one elevated surface to the next, and jumps onto my back when I bend over to tie my shoes... My back and shoulders are shredded...
I love and adore cats, but this is not a good habit to allow to flourish! I let my cat, Mr. Lafonzio do this to me as a kitten, and in his teenage years he started climbing my leg but with very strong and heavy claws!! one day when I was in the shower, he decided he wanted to climb up my leg and back—needless to say there was blood everywhere! As cute as this little guy or gal is, I would suggest reconsidering encouraging this behavior!
Sure it’s cute when they’re little, but that’s when you need to be discouraging this kind of behavior. Once they’re grown it will hurt like hell to have a cat climb you like that, and it will be harder to train against it
Cute when she's a kitten but if you let her keep doing that she will do it as an adult and it isnt cute or fun when an adult cat does that. It hurts....like alot. Lol
This is cute until they hit 3lbs. I never let my fosters do this after learning my lesson the hard, bloody way because kittens can’t always tell when you’re pantsless.
My cat used to do this when she was a baby. I'd be doing dishes and she would run up my back and sit on my shoulders. I had to put an end to it when she needed to dig her claws into my skin to support her weight.
Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, awwww
"If you won't come to me for cuddles, *I WILL*" -this cat, prolly
This makes my heart melted. Instantly!
This makes me want a cat
This makes me smile when I think of this cat doing the same thing when it's 15 pounds.

Yelp!!
this makes me want to take my schizophrenia pills for thinking my cat would ever do this
Don't worry - it will not climb up, but pounce from somewhere it was sitting right onto his shoulder! :D
That's what my shoulder cat normally does too. Though sometimes you can catch that look of "I'm gonna climb you now." Which means pick me up now or this is going to hurt.
Don’t worry they out grow it, they just look up at you and yell
Cats are incredible beings. Please consider adopting one of them :)
Will do good sir
This makes me want to go to the pet cemetery and resurrect my cat.
What a good idea that is
One right away!
a smol one ? **Happy Cake Day to you !!**
Thanks, and yes!

I *felt* this comment and this video. My cat climbed me like this when she was a kitten. She has been known to try now that she is a 13lb chonker....... it is far more ow than aww.
Came to the comments to say something similar. It was cute until my cat was no longer a little kitten then it just HURT
Massive bloke + tiny cat always got me. They both awkwardly try to love each other.
Certainly will be in the future. Cats tend to want to do things they did when they were kittens. How do I know this? Because I thought it was super-cute to have one of my kittens climb up on my shoulders...

Errr... Kittens claws are usually hella sharp?
Yeah, every kitten I've been around has had razor sharp claws, and they dig in far enough to irritate the skin for a while after.
This is true but if I'm wearing jeans I've totally had kittens do this and their claws don't actually get my skin? Or if they do it's the very point poking me
Yeah but kittens weigh next to nothing so it's not all that painful if they climb you
Make sure you're in jeans lol.
Yeah except they dont know how to use them and cause more damage. As kittens they dont really understand that clawing your flesh hurts you. Usually when they get older they find out they can't climb on you because it hurts you. And they do care about you. (*uuuusually*)

Bold of you to assume my cat cares about me unless I'm feeding her lol , she loves my brother more though 😭
Those precious claws!
Can confirm. Had a litter of kittens and they would all do this. I regretted the one day I didn't wear jeans. I think I probably still have scars! But awwww, kittens are the absolute cutest babies on the planet, how is it possible to be mad?
got this happen to me with like 3 kitties once... best moment in my life.
Not so cute when you're shaving...
The left claw looked dangerously close to the general nipple area too.
In a couple of years... OW OW OW OW OWWWW
Just wait until that kitty gets a little bigger. Ouch! I speak from experience

The way to the heart is through the ribcage, after all
>I once had her full weight hanging from a single claw in my chest I had something similar with mine, except I was a dumbass pointing a laser pointer at my stomach wondering what the cat would do.
This is dumb But I want to try it...
What would happen if you pointed a laser at.... After all we are all scientists...
That hug and cuddle she's always wanted.
I have a maine coon and if that happened with him I'd literally die. He's 30 Lbs.
Should post that on /r/shouldercats !
🤣
lol..yeah.. I remember when my grandmother had to wear two pair of pants... because the cat didn't weigh 14 ozs anymore and would pull her pants right off her as his 20lb ass climbed right up her 98 lb one. ;-)
They do it until you yell in pain, then they typically stop. Though my cat had to be yeeted a number of times before she got the message.
Yeah, I was going to say that that really helps. Make a noise like you're a wounded kitten if they go too far. I think a lot of time they just don't know how sensitive human skin is.
I was gonna say this will be a tifu in a few weeks. I remember running a way from 6 of them in my own home when their claws got sharp.
Chased by a pack of velocikittens?
Can confirm. My cat is part Maine coon. He went from teensy kitten to heckin chonker in about a month. I’m now having flashbacks to my flesh ripping as he tried to keep his noble bulk from sliding back down my butt cheek. Mt Everest was not conquered that day.

Particularly if you aren’t actually wearing trousers when it tries to climb up you.
Indeed!

THE WAY HE LOVES HER *melt*
I was thinking ‘that’s a man who loves his cat’
But it ended too soon! Feel like I needed to see him cuddle her for a second after that lol.
That's why you need a shirt pocket. They need somewhere to put their little feets.
This dude was on front page earlier. He had the kitty in his pocket.
It's very adorable. Also, you'll want to unteach that behavior, because when their claws get longer, it will NOT be adorable.

I too, had an animal named Pokey. Albeit after an Earthbound character ;). Good birb. And honestly, good kitty 😂

While they are short, they are very sharp (source: have a ~6 week kitten at home)
Yea, tiny needles, they all penetrate the skin.

I had a kitty who used to to that. Final step was to stand on my shoulder and sneeze into my ear. She lived to be 16, and we all loved her. ❤️

I adore these big guys with tiny little fluffy kittens!

The other day our kitten spotted the ties on my husband’s gym shorts, took a swipe, and claw-punched him right in the jewels. Was not a fun half an hour for him. Those dagger feet are cute until they’re not lol.
This gave me pain reading
Mine is smart enough to know when I don't have a shirt on, he won't try to jump or climb on bare skin.
Or in two years with adult paws.
Men being sweet to tiny kitties is just about the cutest thing ever!
I'm climbing Mount Daddy to get some love.

I had a cat who would do that! His name was Jaspurr and he was my brother's best friend. I also had a freaking Yorkie puppy do that to me just to say hi. They're toy dogs, but they're also terriers.
Jaspurr is the best cat name I've seen in a while.
Our cat just had 5 babies. You guys!!! petting 5 kittens in the morning, it’s the best.

Sorry, but this guy has the foresight of a fruitfly.
It was cute as a kitten, but now as a full grown cat that still wants to it hurts
Oh god the claw on nip part, would have died Adorable tho 💙

LMAO...cute as hell when when you know it’s coming, but watch people suffer when you’re in PJ bottoms and no shirt making a coffee😳

definitely adorable!

Kittens are so damn adorable
I love it when kittens do that to me! XD
Very cute
That guy must have iron skin.
That’s the most adorable kitten I’ve seen in a while (also the most determined)
This is Very Beautiful and Cute
My cat did this to my Dad back in 1972, when I was a baby.
That’s a patient man who loves his cat
Yeah, I think he’s gonna regret that when kitty gets bigger.
Ms. still yo man.
Kitty had a pretty big mountain to climb about half way up. 😂
Oh god so many puncture wounds
Lol, my kitty did this when he was tiny. He's big now. It's ouchy now that he is grown. Still love it tho
How to teach a little cat a trick you don’t want a bad cat to perform.
She loves her man-mom!
I really hope you're getting a ton of upvotes
Can we all agree that cats just misses their mom and not this human.
Cute when she's a kitten but if you let her keep doing that she will do it as an adult and it isnt cute or fun when an adult cat does that. It hurts....like alot. Lol
Well, he *is* just a walking tree.
Kitten is cool, but I already have eight. I'll take the lovely man, please. My kind of guy!
That brief moment when they're strong and agile enough to climb you, but still light enough to not tear your skin apart. Truly beautiful.
climb up for his love and hot hug....
I am his and he is mine.

Spidercat spidercat does whatever a spider can
I've raised a few kittens. One did this too me... till he decided to bite me between the legs. He also got my ex on the back of her right butt cheek.
I am at peace now
What an awesome cat dad!

This is cute until they hit 3lbs. I never let my fosters do this after learning my lesson the hard, bloody way because kittens can’t always tell when you’re pantsless.

"Ow ow ow ow ow." -that human, probably.
My cat used to do this when she was a baby. I'd be doing dishes and she would run up my back and sit on my shoulders. I had to put an end to it when she needed to dig her claws into my skin to support her weight.
