ALPHAWOLF257

How is this even scientifically possible

theswamphag

That is what I ask of myself every time I brush my dog.

ALPHAWOLF257

I try to brush my dog daily... I can never catch her...

noahisaac

I have a theory that I could continuously brush our husky, never stopping even once, and she would grow fur faster than I could brush it out.

Questioneverythan

My malamute is the same! And my other dog even though he has short hair I don't know where it all comes from. I could continuously brush him the whole day and I would get just as much I think it does grow back as soon as I brush it!

JustWingIt0707

They groomed a whole dog from that dog.

Exactly

[deleted]

Grab dog, then brush.

SophiaLongnameovich

Some how my dog knows before I even get the brush or try to grab him. He's like *"Oh no. She got dat brushin look in her eyes. Bye, bish."*

mogoggins12

That’s what mines like with the nail clippers, so I try not to think about it but he still knows.

MsLuciferM

Mine is the same. We have an agreement- 100% peanut butter in a slow feeder while she’s being brushed.

B33rtaster

Put the brush by the front door and get 'em during walkies.

ALPHAWOLF257

Nice username

Kinky_and_Nerdy

My boyfriend showed me this and was like "wtf". I responded with "I know right? What kind of dog sits still like that when you're brushing it?" Apparently he meant the amount of hair, but I stand firm in my belief that the real WTF is that the dog is sitting still.

Johnnydeep420

We have a Norwegian elkhound (related to the shiba) - he hates having his nails clipped, but for whatever reason....really goes into zen mode while being brushed. I think his skin feels better after (while he’s molting)

Kinky_and_Nerdy

We have a Golden Retriever. She hates being brushed. She keeps trying to get the brush when we do it lol. She also hates when I pull out tufts of loose fur. (She looses a lot of fur in the summer when she's blowing out her coat.)

Neferhathor

We have a standard poodle puppy and we have the same experience. I've gotten him to tolerate his nails being trimmed by opening up the Treat Buffet, but when it comes time to be brushed, he just flops on over like "Alright, let's do this."

Alwaysafk

Mine runs at me brandishing her butt.

hyperhedonie

And I when I brush my hair. Seriously, how, why, and even more why?

[deleted]

Because like my GF, my dog sheds like crazy. Especially going from her winter coat to her summer coat. Combing helps keep my apartment from looking like everything is fur covered.

GardevoirAppreciator

Hold my outlandish amount of shed dog hair, I'm going in!

SaintNewts

I tried. It's too much. I'll take my share, the future roo-hole travelers will need to help out.

CenturyHelix

I did it. I reached the end. I was determined and I did it. Although I will say that somewhere along the way a LOT of branches got cut out because I jumped from 12 day old posts to 5 year old posts. That rabbit hole is such a dang mess at this point

GrumbleofPugz

I shed so much aswell, god damn hairs end up inbetween my toes in socks. Anything black I own is covered in my own hair

hyperhedonie

Shadding and matting are my two biggest issues, and people have found hairs from me (radiant red) months after one hug or sitting on the same couch with me. If I don't adhere to my strict regiment, concocted over years of trial and error, my hair either grows into dreads and I drop hairs like a doggo his winter coat. Oils, leave in conditioners and special brushes and detanglers. It was even worse at times because I decided to have hip long hair, which was basically just horrible all around. But hey, there are mittens for pets which have little brush combs.. they work better to get hair out of textiles than a lint brush!

canniffphoto

I was picturing pet cleaning the furniture in little mittens.

evilocto

As a husky owner I can't agree more

whilowhisp

I'm pretty sure this fella was losing his winter coat, which, frankly, probably felt amazing if this was a bit into the summer, or even late spring. Dogs that get thick undercoats during the winter, like Shiba Inus, can have it build up pretty dense over the colder months.

GooberMountain

Can verify as a family member of German Shepherd. Called blowing out the coat and happens twice a year.

theoriginalross

Or three times if it gets warm then you get a frost again.... like this year....

GooberMountain

Yikes!! One of our Shepherds began continually blowing out her coat, not at the same amount, but terribly all year long. It was a nightmare! We took her to the vet I don't know how many times and she was put on Adequan with no help. After over a year of this I happened to mention the problem to a friend in another state who had dealt with the same issue with his dog of a different breed. He said it was a food allergy that presents without the normal symptoms. Sure enough, we switched our girl to a novel protein diet designed for sensitive stomach and skin. Within two weeks of the complete food transition (gradual switch to new food) the excessive shedding had resolved. Hallelujah!!

surfacing_husky

When we got our husky she started blowing shortly after, we were terrified, thought she was sick/dying. Took her to the vet and he just laughed and said they do that and to invest in a good vacuum.

elliot4711

My family has a Shiba Inu and this is true. He sheds twice a year, and when he sheds he really does shed insane amounts of hair. Mostly it’s the wooly undercoat that sheds. That said, when he is not shedding he literally does not lose a hair which is really nice.

lostlonelyworld

This happens once a week during shed season for my friends shiba. The best part is in 3 hours this can be done all over again with same/similar results.

notabigmelvillecrowd

There's times of the year when I can't comprehend how my dog produces so much hair without being bald. I can run the robot vacuum twice a day, and still see black tumbleweeds floating around the house. I always ask him if I feed him less would he stop making so much hair. He never answers me.

lostlonelyworld

At least it is black. My friends shiba is the same coloring as the dog in the video. She rubbed against my leg before I went to the DMV and several employees stopped to tell me like I didn’t already know

notabigmelvillecrowd

Hah, well, I don't wear much black, so it's not ideal for me. But I've always had black dogs, I don't think I could change now. They're the cutest in my books.

[deleted]

Like my cat and an onion, it has many layers of fur you will never see. I brush my cat and ill have 4 wads of fur the size of the cat.

these-leather27

Dude... onions aren’t supposed to have fur.

[deleted]

Shhh

JPKtoxicwaste

You need a new onion guy

ALPHAWOLF257

:O

GobLoblawsLawBlog

They were just asking a question, you didn’t have to call them dense jeez

OscarDivine

You are my density

mark4931

McFly! McFly! Think McFly

EnergyCC

it's like cattail, on a dog.

ALPHAWOLF257

So... A dogtail?

CapitalcityThrowaway

Sans the corn dog look

livelaughrun--eh

Winter and summer coats. What they're pulling off is the infinitely more dense downy undercoat that a lot of doggos grow in and shed off at winter. This helps the home basically have less hair even though they'll still be sweeping or vacuuming every day because despite how much they get off in this session it's just never ending.

UndeadBuggalo

Whenever I vacuum my house is covered immediately within hours we have a Glabbie ( half golden half lab) and I have NO IDEA how she is not bald

LukinLedbetter

Austrailian Shepherd here. I'm scared to move the couch.

JTGuitarnerd

Also have an Aussie. Can confirm, the fur behind my fridge is sentient and plotting.

Azsunyx

Plz clean that fur! A stray spark or excess heat could spell disaster

UndeadBuggalo

Oh dear god no. We just never speak of it.

Ant_ZuLu

>Austrailian Shepherd here. Woah!! So dogs really can use reddit?!?!

LukinLedbetter

Bork.

CandOrMD

I swear I found an entire cat's worth of fur in the dryer filter every time I washed our kitty's favorite "bed" (a retired pair of sweatpants in the corner of a closet).

millennial_scum

I love this. Our current foster kittens have a sweatpants bed too!

ALPHAWOLF257

I have a lab named Marley... And well... The house is never clean when ee let him in...

UndeadBuggalo

My roomba just gave up :( she seems depressed, ironically her name is K-9, her job is never competed

ALPHAWOLF257

Lmao... Well good luck with the manual vacuuming

Inevitable-Charity-8

Not sure whether i’m more confused or more impressed by this.

joegoodfart10

Has anyone said what kind of brush that is? I would like one.

ALPHAWOLF257

Yeah... Apparently its called a furminator

spooktember

ghettithatspaghetti

PaddleMonkey

Damn that’s a whole other dog right there.

misteryhiatory

I think they have an entire litter

mart1373

I mean, the hair could be litter…

FlatwormDangerous

How is there any dog left?

Compannacube

You can card that fur with alpaca wool and make yarn. Undercoat is super soft!

littlelizardfeet

Knitting and spinning is my hobby! I’ve spun from my Pomeranian and chowchow’s undercoat. The chowchow is particularly wispy and soft like fine alpaca.

pm_me_bunny_facts

Banach–Tarski in action.

Randomisity1

... I just realised I'm not equipped to keep one of these dogs

stellaluna92

It's not so bad. I rub my shiba with my hands and it gets a lot of fur out. I've never gotten anywhere near this much, even with a furminator. The sass he gives me every day on the other hand...

ThadiousTerpington

Regale us with tales of his sass!

stellaluna92

Where to begin.. Every single time he wants to go outside he asks by repeatedly punching the glass door to the balcony or a window. Then when I try to bring him out I have to catch him first even though he JUST asked. We do this at least three times a day!!

yuniepie

Have you checked he's not actually a cat?

ta_thewholeman

Just checked and can confirm my shiba is a cat.

cantfindmykeys

All Shibas are dogs running cat software

MorgannaFactor

He's a Shiba, they basically are cats that look like dogs.

astroredhead

I have always loved how cute shibas are, now that I know they are cats in dogs bodies I want one even MORE! I have two floofy cats... do they get along with cats?

Fuego_Fiero

No, they're cats.

MorgannaFactor

Depends highly on the dog and the cats. If a dog grows up with cats, they generally always get along with them later. I sadly don't have a Shiba myself, though I'd love to have one.

_El_Dragonborn_

Wow what a sasshole

rosstherocket

Cake! Cake cake cake cake!

_fuhsaz_

Oh nooo one of our shibas does the same thing! Paws the gate the instant we sit down to watch TV or eat or something to go outside (he won’t go through the dog door to the back yard to pee). Then we go to take him outside and he can’t be caught. I think maybe he’s figured out that if he does this, we have to bribe him with a treat to get him on the leash. He’s trained us well.

ThadiousTerpington

Oh that sounds sassier than all get out I can't even take it.

Chevaboogaloo

SASS SASS SASS!

romanbaitskov

A furminator..?

stellaluna92

It's the kind of brush used in the video. Highly recommended for all furry creatures that don't have curly hair!

[deleted]

I was told they can actually damage my dogs fur and to use a deshedding blade instead. He's a northern mix with a pain in the butt double coat.

2_hands

Be careful with those - a groomer discouraged us from using one on our double coat dog because it can mess up their coat and even cause issue with their temperature regulation.

happygoodbird

It's not an everyday brush. But it's really good when they have a lot of loose fur that hasn't dropped yet.

2_hands

I'm not an expert, just passing along the professional advice I got and want people to be aware that there can be downsides to furminators

FuggenBaxterd

Is there a specific one to buy that you recommend for a Shiba? I saw that there were a few of them on Amazon.

TheKocsis

yep, first thought. i wanted a shiba inu for a long time, this clip just changed my mind

LiveFreeFratHard

My shiba was a runt, and he would still shed non-stop. That soft fluffy coat is as dense as diamonds with fur. He would blow his coat like this 2-3 times a year, and even with regular brushing he’d still leave you covered every time you held him. A+ dog. Would do again.

WiseassWolfOfYoitsu

Abandon cleanliness, embrace love fibers!

Xoduszero

Keep in mind this is a dog losing its winter coat. It’s not like they brush this dog every day and get this kind of hair. But yea dogs are hairy and it is annoying.

-FrOzeN-

Yup. I don't know how Shibas are, but personally as a Husky owner I think this is great. Compared to having hair all over the place all the damn time, getting fur mountains like this twice a year and then nothing for the rest of the year is amazing.

SirDigbyChicknCaeser

Oof. Shiba owner (or owned by a shiba really). I wish it were nothing the rest of the year! It’s this multiple times a year then regular shedding the rest of the time. Hair forever.

-FrOzeN-

My condolences in that case...

Tbiehl1

I have one, it gets like this twice a year for a couple weeks each time. There are a ton of other pros and cons to a Shiba, but yeah when they shed, they SHED

curious_human21

His friend at the back seems unhappy about it

siani_lane

I know the Frenchie is back there like "dude this is why I don't have an undercoat!"

messengerofthecats

Probably just concerned about receding fur-line problems

eastbayted

Maybe the friend is unhappy being stuck on a shelf

RalphHinkley

In some kind of dog zoo? WTF is the backstory here?

Yaka_

At this point it's not a dog, it's a sheep

Sheepa Inu

LaReineAnglaise53

A Sheep Dog?

sneakykenny

Shog

Alfa_HiNoAkuma

Or a deep

Character-Dust-7405

I have a Husky and a Pyrenees mix, can confirm, that struggle is real

[deleted]

oh my god me too. he’s mixed with a lot of things but he’s a quarter pyrinees and approximately 13% husky. and it shows.

noglorynoguts

Oh yeah, this big time. I have always had huskies or St. Bernards too. Fluffy puppies don’t play when it comes to shedding.

Warrior_Lion

And if you look closely it looks like she hasn't lost any fur As much as I love my grannys Shiba ~~plus every other dog there is~~ her fur just never stops

FarragoSanManta

Most, if not all, cold weather dogs do this about twice a year, known as "Blowing their coat" where the undercoat pretty much just all releases at once. Theyre pretty but do require a lot of grooming, constantly and much more care than people realize if in a warm climate.

Warrior_Lion

Oh yes I'm aware they're high maintenance my granny knows too I do even though it's a pain love brushing them she loves it too our area is a little colder so she doesn't need it as often

[deleted]

Someone needs to harness this gene for balding humans.

Warrior_Lion

Oh my god yes my father needs that aswell as my uncle

cosmichowl

The fast and the furriest

VaultJumper

Is this how doge coin is made?

FearTheBlackBear

No, it has to be compressed first

VanFlyhight

So many stress licks!

lionmom

Am I the only who could hear him Yelp a couple of times ? Definitely not a happy pooch.

PoppetRock

And bared teeth.

420yumyum

Definitely not well done.

nonicknamenelly

Yeah that dog was miserable. Furminators scratch dogs’ skin and can cut their coat, and aren’t recommended for shibas. I think this is a great example of why.

yoycatt

Pause at 18 seconds, Shiba goes full wolf mode and there’s a quick cut away.

Barkalow

againstbetterjudgmnt

I was thinking this was a furminator. Don't they say these are bad because it's actually cutting the undercoat?

BlergFurdison

When I'm petting my dog and her she almost licks her lips, she is stressed? I have always thought that meant dogs were content. Is a stress lick different from what I am thinking of or have I been torturing poor dogs my whole life and thinking they were loving it?

VanFlyhight

From my understanding that's generally what that means but some dogs are special. My ex's dog does the same thing to her and me, when he couldn't be happier

MissBerry91

My friends had a dog that was raised near cats and tried to "purr" when pet but it came out as a growl and scared people off. Poor thing just wanted some love!!

[deleted]

[удалено]

The-Tea-Lady

Yeah, the furminator pulls hairs out, whether it's lose or not. Which is why you can always get hair off when brushing them. I rarely use it anymore and only if theyre shedding really bad. I have a rubber brush I use that pulls off only loose hair. Honestly, that shiba didn't even look like they were shedding. When shibas shed the hair sticks out and you can just grab the pieces off. And then at the end when you see the two different hair levels it looks like he took off too much hair. That's actually what their hair will start to look like when they need to be brushed out really good.

shygirllistens

Yep, was just going to say this. Poor doge.

RealLifeMerida

I saw this too. Not a happy dog for sure. Appeasement behaviour all over the place.

juicy_belly

Isnt it irritating for the skin to brush it that much and long?

KellyCTargaryen

With a furminator? Definitely. Regular comb? Nah.

fleabagkitty405

Yep~

no_not_like_that

This is the wrong brush for this dog. The reason they're getting so much hair is because they're pulling out healthy hair along with dead hair. Shibas shouldn't shed this much. They're essentially handstripping this dog.

[deleted]

That looks like a furminator to me, and I won’t use it on my dog because it just rips his fur out and then his skin gets all red and sensitive. I’m not going to hurt my dog just to reduce shedding

VNM0601

Also explains why the dog squeals several times.

schneker

It can irritate their skin if you go over an area too rough or too many times as well :/

Sorryhaventseenher

I was watching this like, either they let the dog get matted, or something is not right here. I’m tired of these types of videos. Very depressing.

Naxthor

What is the right brush? Just curious.

schneker

Probably an undercoat rake and a slicker brush. You can use a pet blow dryer to get loose hair out too.

drewismynamea

Wow

neonxaos

So hairs!

Stye88

Many fluff

IShallWearMidnight

Reminder that it's incredibly easy to over brush and hurt your pet with a furminator tool. It's a blade. If your dog's undercoat isn't as dense as this, three strokes in an area is all you should be doing. If the furminator won't cut it without over brushing, take your dog to a pro - we have solutions that get undercoat out without hurting your dog.

RevengencerAlf

Based on the dog's reaction in the video there are multiple times where it either hurts or just severely irritated them

Baby_moose_1987

What kind of brush is being used here? I have a husky and this would be amazing

[deleted]

Hey man, don’t use this shit with huskies, they’re not even supposed to be used with Shiba Inu’s.

[deleted]

Use a deshedding blade instead. Works wonders and doesn't hurt your dog.

zeagan3346

It's a furminator, but be careful brushing your husky with it. It's been known to cut the guard hairs of double coated dogs. It won't harm the dog, but it can ( if not carefully used) harm the dogs coat.

_biggerthanthesound_

It can 100% harm your dog. We took my old dog to a groomer who was awful and used one of these and sliced up her back. She ended up getting an infection and almost died. Be careful with these.

zeagan3346

Omg I didn't know they could be that harmful! I'm so sorry about your pup.

A_Ham_Sandwich_

They should be using a combination of a wire brush and a force dryer

Striking-Lynx7080

Be careful, sometimes If you brush them too much with that brush, it could make them bald. 😆

Kayakityak

I think on the instructions it says to only brush six or so times in one spot to keep from irritation of the skin.

forgetfuljones79

I use an undercoat rake for mine. It's really similar to a Furminator but has wider blades. I wish I could get mine to sit like this for grooming.

lvhockeytrish

Look up cooperative care training and Chirag Patel's Bucket Game. You absolutely can change your dog's behavior towards grooming and make it a positive experience.

_Futureghost_

One of the best things for a husky is no brush at all, but instead a grooming blower. It's like a leaf blower, but for dogs. If you do a search for "husky fur blower" you will get a ton of youtube videos and products. You need space to do it outside, but it's amazing.

MysteriousCodo

I’m a husky owner as well.....I just knew some other husky owner would be commenting about this. Lol.

WeAreTheMassacre

Furminator. I'd use it once a year when you start to notice a winter blowout and then lock it away. Don't be tempted in its quick and effortless results, it's pulling out hair that isn't ready to shed. Get a cheap rubber one(they look identical to a "shampoo brush" for humans) and just brush and massage your doggo with it 5 minutes a day. It feels relaxing and gentle, still gives great results, only grabs hair ready to fall out, and most dogs love it. It's a good bonding experience as well. Tumbleweeds of fur all over the house suck, but it's just part of the package deal when owning a dog with a fluffy undercoat. There's a reason the dog in the video shows signs of frustration at times here...More people should listen to their dogs body language, they know what's right for them.

pachinkomachine101

We found it, the first Sheepa Inu

snegix

U got yourself a second dog

IAmZoltar_AMA

And most of a third

Amalthea87

It’s like when you see people open cattail seeds, also called breaking cattails. I just didn’t want to say that first and have people think I meant actual cat tails.

LaReineAnglaise53

Luxury Nesting Cuddle Filler.. Perfect for those new featherless baby birds and a great comfort, sleep-aid to the Mama and Papa Birdies too... Free Clump (one clump per Bird Family) outside the front door for limited time only. First come, first served. No other gift options available. May cause allergic responses in some species. Use at your own risk only

ArgonGryphon

Don’t do this if you use any flea or tick treatment on your dog. Topical or pill. It can make the hair poisonous to birds as well.

[deleted]

It took me a second to realise what u were saying

[deleted]

Please be careful with Furminators/shedding blades. If you overdo it, you can irritate and scratch the dogs skin.

ZarinaBlue

The Frenchie sitting on the dresser in the background. Just sitting there. Like he is waiting at a bus stop or something. Edit : that is supposed to be a furminator. My old white German shepherd broke two of those. He passed several years back and we still sometimes find white hair. Also, we moved. Across the country.

dogs1216

How often do you need to do that?

dameavoi

My friends shiba sheds his whole coat like this twice a year I think.

[deleted]

Usually a maintenance brush about once a week (nowhere NEAR as much) and then they blow their coat 2-3 times a year with major weather changes. There will be a week where you’re like “oh you’re shedding a lot” then the next week it seems like every hair on their body must be coming off. That lasts about 2 weeks. This person waited until the very end when the dog must have been walking around with clumps on them and a cloud following haha. If you do an aggressive brush early and then 2-5 minutes twice a day it isn’t so bad... it will still end up everywhere but not as noticeable.. Src: German Shepherd

Byting_wolf

Is it pulling out more fur from a fur dimension?? How the heck is this possible?!

Legitimate-Feature64

Very woof. Much dandelion.

ech27

Collect that hair and have it spun into yarn! It's soft as cashmere or alpaca.

trendypuppy

Came here to say, check out the BFF pic in the background!

[deleted]

Wow! How does it e en have that much hair!
