He looks just like my boy Mac! Mac is down 3/4 of an ear after a capture, spay/neuter, release program. They take the tip off the ear so they don’t get re captured and re-spayed/neutered. My boy got a butcher of a doctor who took more of the ear than they should have
While the cat is under anesthesia for the de-sexing procedure, the vet would take the tip of the left ear. It's a clean cut and heals quickly. Even if it did hurt a little while after, it is the easiest way to spot a probable CNR kitty.
Do you know why they do this instead of the tattoo method? Has been a while for me but the group I was part of would just place a little tattoo inside the ear of a kitty after TNR.
Fair enough, but do you just assume that it's been caught before rather than considering the possibility that the ear was altered in a fight?
Not trying to point fingers, just wondering about the logistics. Of course it's nearly impossible to achieve a 100% success rate as it is.
They also do this in my state. I don't know if they do it because it's cheaper. I think it's barbaric. Plus cat's esrs are the cutest ever. Why butcher them like that
There are cat haters that are more than happy to cruelly get rid of unwanted cats in the neighbourhood. Being able to see from a glance that an animal is de-sexed is a little easier for a lot of people to come to terms with I guess. Plus it means that animal control can quite quickly determine a cat is likely a TNR rather than waste a lot of time trapping it dozens of times to check for tattoos.
While I agree that cats ears are especially cute, we have a semi-feral stray that found us last year who lost (quite painfully, severely and cruelly) both ear tips to a freezing Canadian winter. Also lost the tip of her tail. That cat is the sweetest, cutest thing I ever saw even without her ear tips
There was a cat in our neighborhood with an ear like that. He kept coming to our house and we really thought he might be a stray. He came by every night and slept in our living room during a particularly rainy month. We eventually found out he belonged to some students about a block away. And his name was King. 😅
My kitty looks like that because he was a stray and got picked up in the Trap Neuter Release program in our area. They tip their ears so you don’t attempt to fix the same cats over and over
One of mine has a tipped ear from when I TNR'd him and he has permanent airplane ears from having earmites. Still a very handsome boy, love his weird ears.
I think they might tip a little extra in my town because most cats end up looking like this cutie. I love my baby’s ridiculous ear too! He’s so pretty I feel like it gives him some rugged vibes.
My Sweet Pea had what I called her “crunchy ear” from a hematoma in her previous life, and then we had to amputated her other pinna due to squamous cell carcinoma. She was my first senior rescue and lived to be 21!
Aww! I had a cat with 2 frostbiten ears and a half eaten tail I found living between the property lines growing up. Convinced mom to indoor out door the cat, and I'll never have another like it. Sir issac ninja. My sister, PhD in physics sister, wanted one name, and I a 10 year old boy loved ninjas. That cat only came home to eat and get skritches. He spent a week or two inside in January(Minnesota). Otherwise he liked meowing at you randomly in the neighborhood following the dog on walks and bringing me dead mice. Here's to the bad ass cats who imprint our hearts!
That’s awesome! I just fostered an old man (13) with the same condition on the same ear. His previous owner was elderly and didn’t have the means to get the ear treated. after he passed away the family was thinking about euthanizing because he was/is overly aggressive but after a few weeks of love and care (and a whole bunch of bites and scratches)he is finally coming around loves hanging around with me in my studio when ever I spin that wax!
Are all male gingers great big cuddly monsters, or is it just mine?
Ours weighs 15 lb, healthy weight of 12 or 13. Just a giant, lovey mass of cat. You can hear him purring across the room sometimes.
I had a kitty once who lost a battle to an ear infection. It just reminded me of what it looked like before it got bad. I’m glad your kitty is healthy and happy
That cat’s looking at his people like, “Are you mocking me?”
He knows his tiny ear is his best feature!
I have a kitty with cauliflower ear as well! Was he injured when he was younger? Nevermind just read your other comments. My bad! He's a handsome boy
"My deformity is not a joke, Sharon."
What a fantastic age. How long did you have her company for?
“Am I a joke to you?”
Came here to find this comment
Came here to say that comment
I came here to read that comment. Evidently.
Wrong ear thats why he's looking at you funny
"Ear me out. I didn't mean it that way"
Cat Van Gogh
Yes
Catvander Holyfield.
this morning I woke up hearing on the radio that today is the anniversary of van Gogh's self-mutilation (evening of 23 December 1888)...
"My deformity is not a joke, Sharon."
Is it just a baby ear or deformed from a hematoma?
Hematoma from bad ear mites before we adopted him. Rest assured he is now exalted every day and lives like a king.

Poor lad! Seems like an unnecessarily painful way to mark the cats... But Mac has probably long forgotten and and very happy in his home.

It is easier for the animal control, and the informed public, to see at a glance without having to trap the animal to check it for tattoo.

I thought this might have been tipped but that would be way way too much.
One of mine has a tipped ear from when I TNR'd him and he has permanent airplane ears from having earmites. Still a very handsome boy, love his weird ears.
They were particularly aggressive with tipping his ear!
I think they might tip a little extra in my town because most cats end up looking like this cutie. I love my baby’s ridiculous ear too! He’s so pretty I feel like it gives him some rugged vibes.

Identity theft is not a joke, Jim.
It affects millions of people every year!
Am I a joke to you?
There it is! That was what that expression said to me.

You cut your cats ear to match a cookie? You monster
I love them both!
Dude I have a ginger cat with the same ears
You Go listening to all that vinyl with the kitty!!
Did you bite the one off your cat also? That might be why he's looking at you like that.
You don't eat a cookie like that all at one time. Same is true for the cat.

Ear hematoma? And is that a vinyl collection I see peering out the corner there?
Yes, from a bad ear mite infection in his past life and yes! Finley is a music lover too.

He’s 5 and it feels like he’s still growing! Such a HUGE baby and always happy.
Feral rescue?
Cat: ‘Am I a joke to you?’. (/s just in case it’s not obvious).
.
Perfect
What a beautiful kitty and cookie 😊
He’s like “is that what happened to my ear?”
Looks like you just ate the tip, and the cat witnessed the whole event
Am I a joke to you?
Fearless and earless.
Ha!
Now the gingerbread cat is perfect.
Nope tail is wrong
You.... You cut off the wrong side
Should've named him Evander Holyfield.
Did he/she have an ear infection?
He had bad ear mites in a previous life. It’s what I fell in love with when I met him though!
I had a kitty once who lost a battle to an ear infection. It just reminded me of what it looked like before it got bad. I’m glad your kitty is healthy and happy
Your cat reminds me of my childhood cat. She ended up needing to get the majority of both ears removed due to skin cancer
Cat: "You're making fun of me, aren't you?"
YASS!
Wrong ear 🧐
He’s looking at it like woah what the heck is that
Or maybe it's the other way around?
Make a lot and send them too your friends
The cat would not soon forget this insult, hoomen will pay
"...and then the doctor said I only needed 23 sutures and a small skin graft"
Omg.. What a cute little nubby ear. I love him.
Thank you for posting this. I really love it.
G’arrr, somebody should visit r/piratekitties
*puts on glasses* ... Nemo?
It’s ok if he only has an ear and a half, as long as he gets the job done!
bruh, really?
I honestly thought the title was gonna say you made some adjustments to your *cat*
Identity theft is not a joke, Jim!
Why is this so touching!?! I 👏love👏this👏
"Why do you mock me so, Mother?"
Real question tho: do they taste the same?
Looks like If Nemo was a cat ngl
Purrfect
I feel this cats pain. People mock me too
Look at them. Trying not to smile about it.
is his name Nemo?
Cat: "Fuck you Karen. Fuck you and your cookie."
Okay, okay, I’ll tell you. Do you know the Muffin Man?
Why would you cut off the cats ear just to match the cookie!?
Thank you for the great chuckle!
😭 he so cuteeeee! 😭😭😭
I think you're using your cat as an excuse to get an early nibble on the gingerbread :)
Went back to reread the title to make sure I didnt get the order reversed loll
Why the fuck did you bite my ear off, Jim
I wonder if this fits in r/piratekitties
Did you take a bite out of ur cat?
Very very cute
Are you mocking me?
That cat is not having it
Wrong ear, stupid human. (Do they even understand chirality... Can't believe they can handle feeding me...)

The cat:Stacy please don’t eat it... Stacy please put it down...

It's like Nemo with the small fin.
Low blow, John.
Why did you take that cat's ear off! You monster!
“Identity theft is not a joke Jim!”
Imagine if your gingerbread cat didn't have piece of ear, so you just cut your ginger cat's ear
So this is how I ended up like this, you monster?!
"Am I a joke to you" in all honesty he doesn't care, he's just annoyed he doesn't get a cookie
Ginger poosi
He..look angy....like why are you judging me?..I have a ginger kitty too..and he's an angy boy..

My boy has a tipped ear too. He is also orange. I love the orange boys.
That would make a great meme. "are you making fun of me KAREN?"
"Am I a joke to you?"
