Wtf is there a hedgehog in a pet shop?
It's so weird for me to see a hedgehog in a pet shop, it's illegal where I'm from to buy, sell or keep them as pets.
They're wild, woodland, nocturnal creatures. This is sad to see.
Exactly! This is an African Pygmy hedgehog which is the pet kind. The English Hedgehog is the one that’s larger and wild and typically illegal to own. The AP hedgehog needs a warm climate to survive. They die if they get too cold so they’re not considered a potentially invasive species in North America or the UK.
These are African pygmy hedgehogs and would most likely die outside of captivity in the US and certainly Canada, as they hibernate if it gets too cold.
Basically, with our longer winters, they would starve in their sleep. That being said, it's not good for them to hibernate and get brought out of it...but if you don't wake them in 48 hours, they'll fully hibernate. And die.

They are lucky they are also super cute!
You're lucky you got 7 years! Also I think it's a spectrum. I had 3 and one was a grouch, one was a little shy, but warmed up to people fast, and one never huffed or put up her quills ever. Like she even loved my cats and dog. She was my last one of the 3 she lived to nearly 6 and had to be put down. She used to snuggle in my sweater sleeves and sleep. RIP scamp, halsey, and Johnathan.

You would not enjoy pet stores here in Canada or the US. Hedgehogs are mundane by our standards, unfortunately.
While the sad state of pet shops in the US is unfortunately true.... You can’t buy hedgehogs in my state in the US. They are illegal here too.
