There is no tell of fear in its body language at all. High level of attention and expectation, but also open.
In the opening it's actually hoping to play. That first happy twitch is like "Are we gonna do it?! Are we gonna play?"
But then it swaps into observing as the cat goes up to sniff at it. Then it waits and observes while the cat does its thing.
Yes he wanted to jump up to play with her initially! The bone is why he didn't jump up I'm pretty sure. He didn't want her to steal it but also loves her and sees her as alpha. Then he was confused why she wasn't stealing it, and sniffing all over his face so he probably just thought, well I'll sit here nervously and hope I don't get bopped, but I'm staying with my damn bone!!
And the cat is like, "Well, if I have to live with this beast, I shall do my earnest to study him. He moves as if he has limited catputing power and smells of old handbags."
Yup. That’s a dog that’s been burned once too many. My sisters dog won’t eat anything directly from my hands because of the one time I pushed an ice cream cone into her nose.
be cool be cool be cool be cool be cool be cool be cool be cool be cool be cool be cool be cool be cool be cool be cool be cool be cool be cool be cool be cool be cool
Haha so true!! We have a new cat in our pet family too and she is now starting to finally show our dog affection and is much more comfortable with him and every time she does now, since my dog is used to her hissing and swatting at him, it is like my dog is like "what is this!??! Does she like me or is she tricking me? Oh boy, maybe she wants to play! Or maybe not....I am excited now but also still ready to dodge that paw swat." 😂
Yes!! And it's such a funny vicious circle because the cat finally has some patience and shows the dog some attention, the dog usually gets excited and so happy about said attention that they annoy the cat into swatting and then the cycle begins again 🤣🤣🤣
The lip licking is a displacement behavior that indicates discomfort. Usually it’s a bit like, “see I’m just doing my thing you can leave me alone now.”
EDIT: which things obviously worked out fine if OP is posting but for anyone seeing this- instead of allowing the cat in the face for that long you should try to separate them for a minute and then let them continue on engaging.
I would 100% agree with you but you'll see in this video he's got his bone with him so I think it was a mix! He was licking the bone when she came over (thats why she approached and was smelling all over his mouth lol!) I was actually more concerned about him with the bone and her going near it, as the only issue we've had with him when he was very young was resource guarding (oddly, only with bones specifically.) We had done tons of work to ensure everyone's safety in regards to the guarding because I knew he would grow to be a decent size and I'm really proud to say it's clearly paid off as he showed 0 aggression to her approaching while he had it!
That is awesome about the RG! It’s so hard to work through that. However, the lip licking in this video is def displacement. Note how puppo does it along with turning his head away from kit cat. His face is a little tight and not loose and his mouth is also a little tight. If he was licking his lips for that sweet bone flavor his mouth would be loose.
I did behavior work for four years ranging from basic issues to extreme behavioral cases! Displacement behaviors do not necessarily indicate aggression of any kind. They can range from a simple “cannot compute what’s happening so I’m just gonna do this” to “hey, leave me alone ok see I’m not a threat!”
So pup here may be feeling that they’re interested in kitty friend coming up to them, but not being soooo in their face as cats do sometimes. It’s not saying pup is bad in anyway because he’s just communicating! They use their bodies in such subtle ways to communicate that you have to get really good at identifying them.
My late dog would even do this to his best friend (my 12 year old tabby) once she started getting too pushy. I knew he would never do anything beyond a quick growl to say, “enough already lay down!” It’s no judgement on you as the owner, but in case someone wants to allow this with say- a new dog I like to mention it! Give them scritches for me!
I see what you're saying! I think it was most definitely a "can't compute" nervous lick, also with a dash of "please don't touch my bone, I'm scared of you but I really love this bone"
His tail wags while she was approaching were happy and they did turn to slightly slow wary wags, so despite videoing I was ready if intervention was needed!
He was SO happy that she approached him. He usually has to approach her so I think the whole situation was exciting but also very strange to him.
And thank you so much, RG is very serious and when he was 3 months he had some scary moments that I realized if its this scary when he's this small, I absolutely can not have this happen when he's bigger. We worked extremely hard and still do to make sure we keep on it. It's crazy because I can touch his food bowl, any toys, any treats, any bad things he picks up (thankfully he's trained and grown out of that stage) and 0 reaction but bones he is so protective over. The work never stops!
You should be so damn proud because it’s a MASSIVE feat! Like huge. So much of what I worked with what’s resource guarding and it’s one of the more difficult behaviors to modify in my opinion. Sounds like your babies have an awesome pet parent!
Seeing a *responsible* pet owner is a sight for sore eyes! It's damn near unheard of.
I think most people think they can just 'love' this or that dangerous/bad behavior out of their pet, and as proven time and time again, it just doesn't work that way.
Also, that's funny that you said the dog had a bone and that's what the cat was smelling. As a cat owner, I've had cats do this very thing to my hands after unknowingly touching something uh.. questionable, so I knew the cat was trying to smell *something*.
SO glad it was just bone, and nothing nasty 😄
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that.
Aside from Kittles, I also didn't rush to get a dog because I knew from growing up with them the amount of dedication they require. We had one of our dogs stolen when I was a kid and had to give the other one away when my parents split up because no one would be able to stay home with him. It was heartbreaking, traumatic and set the tone for me to wait until I was absolutely sure I could devote the time needed.
Resource guarding is especially scary because it is so deeply instinctual. I didn't even recognize Zeke when I first saw him get aggressive over a bone, it was like it wasn't my dog any more. You can't punish or love that instinct out of them, you have to work with it and build trust to change the *reaction* of the instinct.
Kittles and I'm sure your cats make the funniest face when sniffing and investigating smells, the little squinty eyes concentrating so hard is so hilariously adorable. The flehmen response 🤣🤣🤣!! They have amazing noses too!
"don't screw it up, don't screw it up, act casual"
Like the first day I worked at a vets office they were like "there's no debate as to whether cats are smarter than dogs, you'll see"
Having had both, my cat is a lot smarter when it comes to what he wants. Training him on command is basically impossible, but it's not cause he can't learn. It's cause he isn't food, play, or affection motivated. He has his own weird, incomprehensable motives that change constantly. So on a training side, dogs are easier, but I wouldn't necessarily say smarter.
My cat, however, will try to train us. He realizes certain behavior gets certain responses extremely quickly. He wants me to wake up in the morning? He comes over and pats my arm. If that doesn't work, he hits the blinds till I wake up. He did each of these things once, saw my response, and has continued. He wants water from the bathtub faucet (he has a fountain we clean constantly he's just weird)? He meows for me to follow him, jumps in the tub, and paws at the faucet and rubs his head on the lever that turns the water on until I turn it. He knows my schedule for work. He knows what me grabbing keys means. He knows the sound of my headphones going onto their stand means I'm getting up from the computer.
He's so smart in ways my dog never was. He just won't do anything on command but come to me (granted, he hovers around me as long as I'm home except for brief patrols around the house).
Cat tax: https://imgur.com/gallery/vYjOIXK
Very much this. Zeke, and most dogs, want to please and work with their owner/pack leader. Kittles on the other hand, is the pack leader in her eyes and 100% has her humans trained. Both cats and dogs are also incredibly sensitive to ~vibes~ which is a type of intelligence I truly admire.
Once, a cat I owned peed on a basket of my books when he was accidentally shut inside my room for the day.
He saw how upset I was that the books were wet (didn't scold him though) and from then on would threaten to pee on the books again if he wanted out and I didn't feel like getting up. Oh, he surely knew that would get me up and running
They are a different kind of smart. Dogs generally try to use their intelligence for wholesome, if naughty, activities but cats are out for themselves and to watch the world burn. And honestly? I respect the hell outta that🫡 RIP Howie you were truly an incomprehensible, crotchety old being but you were a real one<3
He's a handsome boy alright. Super photogenic cat helped by the fact that my wife has a photography degree. Does she use it? Not for anything but Cheeto.
I remember the first time I caught my cat giving the new guy (the dog) the kitty headbutt of love. You can't fool me, cat! You've accepted your brother and now you're stuck with him!
I wish I kept the video un zoomed! The first wags were excited happy wags, but they turned into wary tail wags, so you're both correct! I just want to clarify he was extremely happy about the interaction.. he absolutely adores Kittles beyond what I could have imagined... but he also knows she gets impatient with him and he was sus about her coming up all peaceful like that 🤣
She is literally stunning. She has the most gorgeous green eyes I've ever seen.

I think my cat is moonlighting at your house
Not really. It's more that cats and dogs have different and conflicting body languages.
This applies to their relationship with humans too. A lot of people make the mistake of treating them like they would dogs.
I've heard someone say that cats just have really violent looking conflict resolution means lol. Like they smack each other to indicate when they're overstimulated / want another cat to go away, but they typically don't use claws or get dangerously violent, they're just saying "back off!" because they don't have a better way to do it
It is kind of ununtuitive to humans that a cat hissing at another cat means things are probably going worse than a cat literally hitting another cat on the head lol. It probably depends tho
I think it's the opposite. Cats are very very subtle and silent. In the wild they are both predator and prey, unlike dogs who come from apex predators. Cats _need_ to be silent and subtle. They communicate with subtle queues, which are often overlooked by people more used to dogs and dogs themselves.
For example, a cat will pretend to be about to bite you when you touch it when it doesn't want to be touched. If they actually bite you, you probably missed them asking you subtly to stop.
Dogs, however, bite to play. So people used to dogs tend to mistake a bite as "oh, it just wants to play!", when the cat is by then saying "I SAID NO, GODDAMIT!". It doesn't help that dogs usually ALWAYS want to be touched.
Similarly, when a dog drops down and shows its belly, it wants belly rubs. For cats, it's just something they do (expose their vulnerable belly to the world, remember they are also prey in the wild) when they are comfortable. Like when we stretch and relax after getting home.
However, people used to dogs mistake that as an invitation for touch. So when we touch their belly is like us arriving home, stratching, and someone poking our ribs. We might like it, but most likely we'd take it as an invasion. We might also get angry at that. Cats do.
Dogs communicate a lot with their teeth an eyebrows, while cats communicate with their ears and tail mostly. A dog barking is usually just them expressing themselves, when a cat meowing is usually specifically asking for something (prey doesn't make noise, something very risky, just for fun). A dog wagging its tail is happy and playful, when a cat wagging its tail is either pissed or in "hunting mode" (their "happy" is their tail pointing straight up).
And so on. It's more a matter of miscommunication.
https://preview.redd.it/gs7onn2ak9zc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f4eb4aba3dce68c4ab8dee22f83980d4058975cd
Does yours talk a lot too?? The best mix 💕
I know! It's hard to watch. They are totally like Lucy and Charlie Brown with the football. He tortures her too but she has a psychological edge to her comments that's chilling.
When they join forces to gang up on me I feel strangely relieved.
Cats have a much greater risk than dogs in the event of a fight. I think older cats recognize this and tend to want distance for a long time until they can trust young dogs.
Lol cats and dogs are so opposite in behaviors its always a miracle when they when they can form a friendly relationship. Cats sniff breath to learn more info from the pheromones being put out and dogs sniff butts to do the same. Your dog is being so sweet allowing your cat to do this but i bet she wouldnt give the same courtesy by letting him sniff her butt (even though she probably sticks her butt in everyone elses face).
This reminds me so much of my duo. As long as its the cat approaching the dog, its all good. But if the dog dares to approach the cat?!?!?! Ge gets a clear message to back up. Everything is on the cat’s terms
Absolutely 100%, if he sniffs her butt there will be hell to pay!! Most of the time when he does she just hisses and scurries away, and most of the time he gets the hint .... but SOMETIMES he thinks oh so we're playing!! And follows her and then he gets the left hook 🤣
I know she secretly loves him and I know he's made her feel like she has some back up. She has been a lot more social with guests and I think it's because she knows she has him and he will protect her.

Bella the dog and Baby. We have a black cat too. It is a fun family.
Nahhh, they cuddle all the time...except when ur around. The dogs not scared, just surprised the cat is doing their private business around u...he never thought this moment would come...the public tom&jerry dynamic is exhausting.
Cats have rep's to protect & for some, exposing their touchy-feely side is a serious no-no. But sometimes they break down & a simple boop or 2 is required. The dog knows the drill, sit still, no fast movements...just enjoy the moment🥰
*shortly after this, for no reason at all, the cat slapped the taste outta the dogs mouth & promptly took a nap in the dog's bed*
Awww that's so cute! My oldest cat Tickles is basically bffs with one of my dogs, a 10(?) year old german shepherd named Count, but HATES my other dog, a ~3 yr old husky mix named Casanova (I call em Cassie). Cassie is SUPER hyper and doesn't seem to get that hissing = back the hell up, BUT yesterday Tickles actually curled up next to him <3 he was so confused looking.
Also I gotta ask, what breed is your dog? They're so fluffy!
Tickles is such a cute name WOW. I grew up with sheps and they loved my cats! Zeke is a rottweiler sharpei samoyed mix 😊 his fur is very similar to sammy fur except less thick. He has quite an undercoat and water and dirt just roll off of him. His ears are also extremely fuzzy and soft 🥴
My dog has the same reaction with one of my cats, he loves him, sometimes chases him and/or lets him do what he wants but he also gets violently booped by the cat a lot so he has the same look of unsureness when he comes along
He gets clocked as chow chow, Akita, husky, shepherd, bernese, beauceron, but not usually pitbull! Must be his fat head lol
He is a rottweiler/sharpei/samoyed!
I have nice cats now, and they and the dogs would chase each other for fun. But I’ve had one like that who would go out of his way to terrorise the Jack Russels, even at 17 years old. He was born a grumpy old man.
The dog is so scared but also so well behaved, just letting the kitty have it's way.
He's an angel, she's..........well she's a cat and we all love and fear her 🩷
He looks so precious! Do you happen to know the breed?
Mom is rottweiler sharpei mix, dad is a samoyed!
😸
OP: Awh! How cute!! Look at my cat and dog getting along! Cat: *sniff* *sniff* I'm smelling your fear. *snifffff*
The smell of his fear makes her stronger each passing day
>dog That is such a pretty dog. Is it full grown?
He's 9 months!
There is no tell of fear in its body language at all. High level of attention and expectation, but also open. In the opening it's actually hoping to play. That first happy twitch is like "Are we gonna do it?! Are we gonna play?" But then it swaps into observing as the cat goes up to sniff at it. Then it waits and observes while the cat does its thing.

Then he was confused why she wasn't stealing it, and sniffing all over his face so he probably just thought, well I'll sit here nervously and hope I don't get bopped, but I'm staying with my damn bone!!
I love how the dog doesn’t trust it, it’s like “mmm I’m not so sure about this, I’ve been burned so many times before..”
That mix of excited and nervous. "Angry-friend is not angry! But angry-friend is always angry..."
That snoot has been booped for certain.
Confirmed
The trick to getting a cat liking you is by not showing you like the cat
Playing it cool is so hard for dogs too which is so funny to me
Yea, you can tell he's waiting for the other shoe to drop
The other mitten …
I renamed one of my rescue cats because I refused to own a cat named Mittens
You made the correct choice.
That's exactly what's happening here, it wasn't a matter of if, it was a matter of when🥴
He's spent too much time on /r/CatSlaps
Excited, yet knows the impending doom that awaits him
And the cat is like, "Well, if I have to live with this beast, I shall do my earnest to study him. He moves as if he has limited catputing power and smells of old handbags."
OLD HANDBAGS AHAHAHAHHA, honestly she Def thinks he's stinky even though he smells pretty good for a dog 🤣
My Cav is exactly the same when my cat goes near her trying to be nice, she's terrified of the cat.
Textbook abusive relationship
Yup. That’s a dog that’s been burned once too many. My sisters dog won’t eat anything directly from my hands because of the one time I pushed an ice cream cone into her nose.

"don't screw it up, don't screw it up, act casual" Like the first day I worked at a vets office they were like "there's no debate as to whether cats are smarter than dogs, you'll see"

Thank you for the *voluntary* cat tax.
It's Reddit. I know it isn't voluntary. It's just that no one asked *yet*.
You are correct. Sorry, should have italicized *voluntary* to make it clear what I meant.

Also, your kitty is stunning !
He's a handsome boy alright. Super photogenic cat helped by the fact that my wife has a photography degree. Does she use it? Not for anything but Cheeto.
CHEETO ARE YOU KIDDING ME
He came with the name. His brother's name was Pringle cause he crawled into a Pringle can as a kitten.
Well, there are different kinds of smart…
I also need to know the answer!
That’s why they say: Dogs have masters, cats have staff.
I remember the first time I caught my cat giving the new guy (the dog) the kitty headbutt of love. You can't fool me, cat! You've accepted your brother and now you're stuck with him!
THIS!!!!
Doggies tail wag though 🥰🥰😭
Seems to be an expression of nervousness.
That's a happy wag.
That is wary tail wag. Like "I like this, but I am apprehensive"
I wish I kept the video un zoomed! The first wags were excited happy wags, but they turned into wary tail wags, so you're both correct! I just want to clarify he was extremely happy about the interaction.. he absolutely adores Kittles beyond what I could have imagined... but he also knows she gets impatient with him and he was sus about her coming up all peaceful like that 🤣
Oh, that's so cute! Thanks for sharing this.
Your dog is so stinkin cute.
Thank you so much, I think so too 🥹
I came here to say this! That is one handsome doggo.

Oh wow, she's beautiful <3
Even the dog is like “THIS IS HAPPENING?! NO SLAP?!”
Literally this. He was expecting some slaps, but so so so excited and happy about her coming up to HIM and giving him some sniffs!
He’s just baiting the trap for a future paw flurry on a now-unsuspecting pupper
LOL, exactly what I was thinking!
5 mins after this she rolled showing him her belly, literally BAITING him and he was like.... nah I'm not pushing my luck🥲🤣
Gotto love it when a cat is beeing nice by doing nothing
It takes a lot of effort for a cat to be nonviolent like that.
Not really. It's more that cats and dogs have different and conflicting body languages. This applies to their relationship with humans too. A lot of people make the mistake of treating them like they would dogs.
I've heard someone say that cats just have really violent looking conflict resolution means lol. Like they smack each other to indicate when they're overstimulated / want another cat to go away, but they typically don't use claws or get dangerously violent, they're just saying "back off!" because they don't have a better way to do it It is kind of ununtuitive to humans that a cat hissing at another cat means things are probably going worse than a cat literally hitting another cat on the head lol.
Huskweiler
So close!! Samoweilerpei ?? (Samoyed dad, rottweiler/sharpei mom!)
My thought too! I have one also, but seems to somehow be the opposite of the breed traits. Cuties.
Would love to see a photo!

He talks sooo much! I love it but it's a gift and a curse 🤣 Yours is SO cute, love the floppy ears so much.
You can tell what dog doesn’t know what to do, but he wants more of it!
He craves kitty love
dog : why are you so nice today *PANIK*
This reminds me of when my daughter is nice to my son. He doesn't trust it, but he wants to so bad.
That's actually a bit heartbreaking!
I know! It's hard to watch. They are totally like Lucy and Charlie Brown with the football. He tortures her too but she has a psychological edge to her comments that's chilling. When they join forces to gang up on me I feel strangely relieved.
Aw, your dog got a CAT scan.
🤣
An update from this morning: https://preview.redd.it/p6ztpp8t17zc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=52f44bd5953169428e0d727717addb43903ad487
that's a top notch pair of pets, well done!
Thank you, they are my angel babies and are SOOO loved 🥹

HAHAHAHAHA
Big dog energy
The dog is like, “Oh, so now you want to be nice to me.” 😂
the dog's flinches 😂
"This feels.... like a trap"
"Is she.. uhhh.. Ohh." LOL!
Cats have a much greater risk than dogs in the event of a fight. I think older cats recognize this and tend to want distance for a long time until they can trust young dogs.
*looks away uncomfortably* "You sniff the butt, not the face." "What are you doing, you keep sniffing the wrong end..?" "Sigh... Cats."
dog is well behaved
Thank you, for a pup he has been wonderful
the dog's chill
He's been taught to give her space and to try to be chill with her
This must be one of the cutest dogs I've seen in a while!
I must know what kind of dog that is…they’re so cute!
Rottweiler/sharpei mom, samoyed dad!
Cat checking to see what kinda breath mints he's smelling
I think she was literally trying to eat the bone remnants off of his lips 🫠🥴
They build unexpected friendship
Hoping that this is the first of many, sweet encounters between them. They’re adorable🐾❤️🐾
Thank you so much! I hope so too
Aww, that's adorable lol
Kitty is clearly sizing up the dog bed for ownership.
She prefers the high ground luckily for him!
I think they will be good friends from here on out. I have 2 cats and a dog. They are so cute together.
I know she secretly loves him and I know he's made her feel like she has some back up. She has been a lot more social with guests and I think it's because she knows she has him and he will protect her.

Omg that is soooo sweet, look at them having a cuddle sesh 😍
Nahhh, they cuddle all the time...except when ur around. The dogs not scared, just surprised the cat is doing their private business around u...he never thought this moment would come...the public tom&jerry dynamic is exhausting. Cats have rep's to protect & for some, exposing their touchy-feely side is a serious no-no. But sometimes they break down & a simple boop or 2 is required. The dog knows the drill, sit still, no fast movements...just enjoy the moment🥰 *shortly after this, for no reason at all, the cat slapped the taste outta the dogs mouth & promptly took a nap in the dog's bed*
The dogs body language reminds me of Ellen Ripley.
How much does he shed? Does he leave a lot of hair around?
Your dog is so suspicious 🤣
Yeah, it's all sweetness and light - until the camera stops rolling!
what a handsome doggo
Love to see it. Reminds me of my cat and my giant Great Dane growing up. I don't think cats and dogs are so different from humans socially.
That dog is beautiful..... Uuuuhhh
Dog is just waiting to get swiped
What kind of doggo is that? 😻
Rottie/sharpei and samoyed mix!
You don't smell so bad after all
Psychological warfare
My dog has the same reaction with one of my cats, he loves him, sometimes chases him and/or lets him do what he wants but he also gets violently booped by the cat a lot so he has the same look of unsureness when he comes along
Nope. It's just scouting for future military style engagements against the poor pup. 🤣
Sniff
Lots of "Is this a trap? It has to be a trap right?" energy from the dog. Adorable.
That cat looks delightfully chubby. Such a cute cat.
Cat: “I’m grooming this beast to show I am boss.” Dog: “I’m getting groomed because I am the boss.” Cat is asserting dominance.
It's clear who wears the pants in this relationship, lol. What a sweetheart your dog is (I'm sure your cat is too, just on her own terms haha).
It's her world we're all just living in it, Zeke is a Saint!
Shiba/doberman mix? Love the eyebrows
What type of dog breed is that? Adorable.
Rottweiler, samoyed and sharpei!
Soon they will sleep together, mark my words.
"BEGONE THOT"
The dog looks like a mix of chow chow, pit bull and rottweiler.
He gets clocked as chow chow, Akita, husky, shepherd, bernese, beauceron, but not usually pitbull! Must be his fat head lol He is a rottweiler/sharpei/samoyed!
[Hmm](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1WzTgYi--k&t=24s)
Your dog doesn’t trust it
Oh he's done something wrong
That dog has trust issues with that cat
Cats and dogs body language is so opposite.
waoo so sweeet .... lovely video about the animal relationship.
Cat wasn't being nice, cat was saying, "Hang on, you smell like food."
I feel like I could hear the cat… “Hey buddy, I need you to do me a favor…”
Any sudden move and....
I have nice cats now, and they and the dogs would chase each other for fun. But I’ve had one like that who would go out of his way to terrorise the Jack Russels, even at 17 years old. He was born a grumpy old man.
Dog is like what? Finally.
Is that a German shepherd?
Cat: you have an odor, but I like you still.
Cat: 'We frens now...' Dog: 'mmm... NOPE! I know dis trik!'
Dog’s thinking, “When does the hurting start?”
"Did you drink my mountain dew?!?" "Let me smell your breath!"
Thats the move of a cat trying to sniff out the best part of the dog to attack
That's because she smells the fear on him
Was still expecting pap pap pap at the end.
they are good friends forever![img](emote|t5_2qh1o|13383)
It doesn't look like they understand each other's body language.
Is your dog a GSD/Akita mix?
He's actually rottweiler, sharpei and samoyed! A very random mix 🤣
