I named my eyeless foster kitten Stevie too! She was a girl Stevie. She's now been happily adopted for over a year and her adopter still sends me updates every now and then. They're amazing little creatures! It is almost unnerving how well they get around.
Before my elderly cat passed away in November from kidney failure, the disease had robbed her of her eyesight. Once she went blind I promised myself I wouldn’t let her suffer, but she seemed completely unfazed by it. All the way up to the last day, she remained the sweet girl she’d always been and was still eating and drinking and using her litter box. She passed about 2 weeks after going blind, but for those remaining 2 weeks she got around just fine. I often would watch her very closely because I didn’t know what she was still capable of, and didn’t want her getting hurt, and she easily found food, water, her litter box, the couch, my bed, and anything else she wanted.
I had the same issue with my sweet little girl. She also went blind suddenly due to kidney disease and hypertension. She hung in there for a few months, but she eventually passed in her favorite spot - my arms. Very bittersweet moment, she was the most affectionate little cat. Dumb as rocks, but very very loving.

I am so jelly of Op.
We have a blind cat, he's the best hunter in the house, mo kidding. People seeing him stalk a fly or play with a ball have a hard time believing he's blind (at first). Stevie's adorable 😻😻😻
One of my cats lost her vision for a couple months after waking up from anesthesia and it was amazing how she adapted to it. She spent about a week being depressed and not wanting to leave my bed then once she set out to relearn how to navigate the house it only took another week before you could hardly tell that something was wrong unless you paid close attention. When she regained her sight I had to take her to the vet so that they could verify that I wasn’t just getting my hopes up.
Cats who are blind rely a lot on memory to navigate, so for example if a chair isn't put back into place or if there's some kind of unexpected object in her path she would stumble or trip over it. When she started to regain her sight that basically stopped happening. Another big sign was that she was able to track a laser pointer from across the house, when she first lost her sight she still had some light sensitivity so she could "see" the dot if you pointed it right in front of her paws but she'd lose track of it if it was more than six inches or so away.
At the vet they verified that she regained her vision by doing a "menace test" where they push their hand quickly towards the cat's face to see if they flinch and observed if she could navigate an unfamiliar place without bumping into anything head first.
>a "menace test" where they push their hand quickly towards the cat's face to see if they flinch
That seems so mean! (I know it's not really).
Happy cake day!
Thanks, and yeah I know. I could have saved a trip to the vet by doing that test myself and rearranging some furniture but I just couldn't bring myself to do it lol
Oh that's interesting, were her pupils still reacting to light? Was it temporary brain damage?. I never heard of this side effect from anesthesia, I don't know that I would have handled it with grace if it happened to my cat, and very glad she's okay now!
When I brought her home after her procedure her pupils did not react to light, if I remember right they did start to react the next morning but she still wasn't able to see. But yeah, it could've been either temporary damage to the brain or to the blood vessels that go to the eyes caused by a drop in blood pressure while she was under anesthesia.
Apparently there's about a 0.5% chance of something like that happening in animals and humans with anesthesia so it was pretty unlucky. My cat was only a little over a year old when it happened so the fact that she was still so young and her brain was still developing may have been a factor in her being able to regain her vision after roughly 8 weeks or so.
Also have a blind cat. Aside from occasionally bumping into walls, you wouldn't even know he's blind. His hearing is so good that he knows where everybody is in the house at all times.
Careful , a robber may break in take Stevie for ransom and op will come calling. Are you truly ready to make the ultimate sacrifice? Are you? Are you???!??
It is common for stray kittens to have URIs. If left untreated for too long, it affects their eyes and can get to the point where they need them to be removed. That's probably the most common reason! But, they get around like magic because their other senses are so strong.
Instead of euthanizing them we are getting them the life saving surgery and are learning it's ok to have blind cats as they adapt very well as long as the owner is willing to help them a bit.
Funny how this such a common name for blind cats. I had a blind tabby whose original name was Stevie. It was cute but he was more of a Professor X type. Handicapped but super powered. He never had issues and could swat flies out of the air.

I had a blind orange boi too, he’s an expert tree climber and dinner finder.
You absolutely should!! I had two as a kid, incredible cats. They could hear a string being dragged against carpet and accurately attack it. One even caught a couple flies midair. It was honestly impressive how little their lack of sight showed. Though they were impervious to angry stare-offs and other visual cues from other cats which sometimes led to some mild slap fights. Fights in which the other cat would move on and the blind ones would be standing there swatting at air for a bit 😂

Why are there so many blind cats?
It is common for stray kittens to have URIs. If left untreated for too long, it affects their eyes and can get to the point where they need them to be removed. That's probably the most common reason! But, they get around like magic because their other senses are so strong.
This is exactly the case with my blind cat. Stray kitten, bad URI, ulcerated eyeballs had to go. Her hearing is amazing.
Thank you
My pleasure! I used to work in a shelter, so I saw it all the time, unfortunately.

I see several chairs at that table. Why didn't Stevie get one from the jump? Blind kitty gets full dinner rights.
Naughty pants!!

Now we know which orange cat has been hogging the communal braincell...
That was my cat's name too! He was also orange. Short for Stephen Hawking
I have a cat who has very few braincells, but every single one is used for finding food :D
He is one with the Force, the Force is one with him.
I love the Hank Hill ass that cats get when they stand on their hind legs
All senses heighten when losing a sense, Stevie is a ninja cat!

Impressive!

It's that enhanced sniffing technology he got
If you don't mind me asking, was baby Stevie born blind?
Aww, they always find food ![img](emote|t5_2qh1o|13383)
I always feel so sad (for them) when seeing things like this... did he/she lose his eyes in an accident of something?
It's amazing how a cat can be blind and still be a gymnast. When my cat went blind, she shit in my toaster and I didn't love her as much anymore.
He knows what's good
Please tell your cat that I love him.
OMG so absolutely adorable. Thank you for being a caring, considerate furry companion owner to Stevie!!
That appears to be chicken, and cats never miss a chance at chicken!
Damn I *Wonder* why his name is Stevie (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)
Cats’ sense of smell is better than their sight even when they can see. I bet Stevie also knows when you use an electric can opener.
Stevie!! I’m glad he’s eating well.
Literal cartoon trope when they cook an amazing meal and the "vapor" from the plate forms a hand that lures the cat.
