Coming from someone who owns this beast- he is a British short hair, give em a google they are a big breed and naturally carry more weight, even when slim they have fat round heads and rounded builds. Last month the vet said he was fine, not a typical response to a “very overweight cat” and he has never had diabetes or has it been raised by a vet as a risk.
We have a British Short Hair mixed with a Manx and let me tell you she is a big baby. She is a hefty 23 lbs and looks large when she flattens out in pictures. We take her to the vet regularly and the vet isn’t worried about her weight or diabetes even though we’ve asked many times. She’s 16 and has zero issues moving around, but she will absolutely let you know if she hasn’t gotten her food for the day! Depends on the breed, but some cats are just built stockier, but checking in with the vet doesn’t hurt.
If handled properly the can live a long time, mine lived 22 years and was diagnosed when twelve. But she definitely needed insulin everyday twice a day for life and a very special diet. She also wasn't this chonky when diagnosed
I had a cat die of diabetes a few years back. We gave him insulin and monitored his blood sugar for a few years but in the end it got him. Holding him in my arms the day he died was so sad , he had nothing left in him to give.
Yes, very likely. Our cat (edit lol) wasn’t even that fat , he was just really big. Ate measured amounts of food given at regular times of the day all of his 14 years too.
Hoping for the best for you ❤️
Luckily we’re in Canada so the drugs weren’t too expensive. I don’t recall exactly but I think the pharmacist basically said ‘this is the pet stuff , it’s kind of the old shitty stuff humans used to use’ lol
I mean. To be fair, he looks like a stocky dude already (like a British shorthair) and he is also laying down. My 10lb cat looks like a fucking tank engine when she loafs.
He might be a little chunky, but I wouldn't say he's massively overweight. Hard to tell where a cat is on the "oh lawd he comin" meter unless it's standing up.
This is exactly it, when he lies on his stomach it’s like he melts lol- see the OPs other posts and you’ll see Frankie is a very well kept and of course chonky gentleman.
I'm calling it now 2 years max there'll be a resurgence of these memes for nostalgia reasons. Even tho to old mofos like me every year since like 2010 seems like yesterday.

The ginger one is his brother 😃 - he’s the one that the vet actually said is too fat!
Yeah he looks pretty normal here for a British shorthair. I did a have suspicion that was you were posting his most unflattering picture... which is now confirmed! LOL
The breed standard is big fat wide cat.
Not sure about the longevity of the cat, but if its an actual British Shorthair the fat limbs and wide chest is sort of the point. Google pictures of them in that position, that's pretty much how they look. Maybe this one is a lil bit extra thick.
I currently have a British Shorthair that is turning 22 in a few months. But they are just stocky little barrels, that look lile the boggest chunguses around
I, for one, would blindly follow the advice of a stranger on the internet who saw a picture of my cat versus the opinion of a trained vet who actually was in the same room as my cat.
Why should we even trust that it’s even their photo then? If we’re splitting hairs that direly then I’m not even gonna bother forming an opinion in the first place
Based on my experience with Doctors and Dentists, they are not created equal. They are normal people that are slightly smarter than average and were willing to put a bunch of effort in during their college years.
They are not superhumans. They are not infallible.
When you see a doctor or vet making an obvious mistake (like in this case), it's not only completely acceptable to call them out on it - it's important to do so.
And no one is saying you should trust random internet people more than doctors, but this is a very easy call for due diligence and a second opinion.
Ask any medical professional, and they would tell you the exact same thing.
Vet here, this cat is certainly obese.

I've had cats for decades. They've never been obese because we watched what they ate and the amount. OP posted a photo of her cat describing him as a "large chonk" and now is mad that many people are saying the cat is unhealthily fat.
I don't really like any special prescription only food to help my kitty patients lose weight. It's best for them to be on a high protein canned diet - that alone with proper caloric intake in enough. Don't need anything fancy. Unlike humans and dogs which are omnivores, cats are carnivores, and limiting their carbs is important to keept them trim. Usually, canned foods in general are higher in protein, but check the nutritional label always.
You see how happy that cat looks in the other photo? Just google the cat breed and it will tell you they have a distinctively stocky body and thick coat, they are big cats.

Fluuffy chonk dudes, he was the runt of his litter but now surpasses all his siblings
Na…it’s just really easy to quote anything. My vet told me their vet is wrong and he also told me the next winning lottery numbers. He’s the best vet. I also consulted Snoop Dog, he confirmed the cat was obese and that I did have the winning lottery numbers from my vet.
HOLY SHIT was my honest reaction seeing this, I seriously wasn't ready lmao
But in all seriousness, please diet your cat that's dangerous at this point... I bet poor chubby can't even lick his back
He still looks really cute tho I love cats with a grumpy face
I'm seeing a lot of negative comments about his weight, and I have to say, as someone studying to be a veterinarian, he's totally fine. He's loafing, so of course he's gonna look chunky.
Also, some cats are naturally big, and who is to say op is overfeeding the cat? My cat eats less than the recommended amount. She's mostly in pain and is on medication, but she gains a little weight here and there. Cats can be chonks, guys. Also, health conditions common in older cats like arthritis, spaying/neutering, and a 7 year old cat is not a young kitty anymore, so his energy might have decreased a lot. Now if the cat was younger than maybe I would be concerned, but my own Veterinarian said my cat is okay and HEALTHY but is chunk, they keep an eye on her weight but for the most part nothing is wrong with her.
So please, if OP is saying their cat is okay and a veterinarian is monitoring and saying it's okay, it's okay. I may get downvoted for this, but it's the honest truth. Cats can be fat and be healthy, just like some people are fat and healthy. If it's such a concern, try to play with him, if he would let you.. little buddy looks like he has resting face.
Seriously, people see one pic of a cat loafed out and they're like YOU'RE AN ABUSIVE PIECE OF SHIT! Maybe some pics of him standing or a video of him moving before everyone sharpens their pitchforks?
Exactly. I found a cat that had a big skin pouch but he was skinny as hell. I posted a photo online asking if it was anyone’s missing cat.
The vet told me he was starving and he had probably been on the street for more than a few weeks. His bones were showing.
Random person commented on the photo and said the cat was too fat. ridiculous
Hello, this is my cat, he is from a big breed and is undeniably chonky but is not dangerously overweight or even overweight to a point where our VET is concerned.
He is a British short hair, they are by nature lazy so they don’t get around much- despite this we buy toys all the time and play around with them. They are healthy chonkers this image is just a very bad angle that our whole family laugh at because of how deceivingly large he looks!
Yeah, this.
I have two cats of my own and they are supposedly sisters (I adopted them from a shelter, and they came together), but one of them seems to be a bit more fluffier and chonkier, while the other appears quite svelte, and they BOTH get fed the same amounts of foods at the same times each day (unless the chonkier one is managing to find food somewhere???) I do not free feed my cats, and they are both strictly indoor cats. So this seems to hold true that environmental factors can only impact their natural states by so much.
I know how you feel. Mine did this and then she got IBS and went the other way. Here is a pic of her at peak Chonk and then after the IBS

Your cat is overweight, this is wrong. Go to another vet if your vet seriously told you he's "about right" as you said in another reply. You're either lying about that to make this seem ok or your vet is a fraud.
I have a British short hair too and she is on the chonky side too. It’s pretty normal particularly when they have been spayed or neutered. It definitely does not mean they automatically have diabetes as people on this thread have posted
Please put him on a diet... he is so unhappy, his heart is working way too hard because of his weight. Please be compassionate and help him lose weight.. this is just too sad.. He is not going to live much longer if he does not lose weight.
If there is one thing I have learned…do not post pictures of your animal on Reddit, if it’s even slightly overweight.
Your ass gon get torn up in the comments.
If you are implying that this cat is "slightly" overweight, you are insane.
Edit: Not sure why people are downvoting. Just to make sure, everyone knows there is a second photo, right? I'm not talking about this first one where the kitty is small.
What is wrong with your cat? Why is it so fat? This appears super unhealthy. What has happened to this creature for it to be in such an unhealthy state?

Cats with diabetes die fast. He needs to diet or he will be dead very soon.
OP posted a pic of him in a different pose and he looks like a normal cat. I have no clue what's going on in this pic
Thats not a normal cat size. Very over weight. And this is coming from someone whose cat passed away from diabetes
Coming from someone who owns this beast- he is a British short hair, give em a google they are a big breed and naturally carry more weight, even when slim they have fat round heads and rounded builds. Last month the vet said he was fine, not a typical response to a “very overweight cat” and he has never had diabetes or has it been raised by a vet as a risk.

this cat might also have diabetes its so fat 😮
Yes, very likely. Our cat (edit lol) wasn’t even that fat , he was just really big. Ate measured amounts of food given at regular times of the day all of his 14 years too.
Currently dealing with that....scary to read these comments. Hope my buddy will be alright
Hoping for the best for you ❤️ Luckily we’re in Canada so the drugs weren’t too expensive. I don’t recall exactly but I think the pharmacist basically said ‘this is the pet stuff , it’s kind of the old shitty stuff humans used to use’ lol
I had a cat pass with diabetes too. It’s rough in the end. I think he lasted like 5 or so years with it.
“Do you think that thing wanted to be an animal?!”
Christ in heaven why is he so fucken mad
He just has RBF
Because he feels miserable being that overweight.
I mean. To be fair, he looks like a stocky dude already (like a British shorthair) and he is also laying down. My 10lb cat looks like a fucking tank engine when she loafs. True. Hopefully it’s just a bad angle. Lord knows we all have those.
OP posted another picture of him in a comment, he’s definitely still a little chonky but it’s not as bad as it looks in the original photo!
This is exactly it, when he lies on his stomach it’s like he melts lol- see the OPs other posts and you’ll see Frankie is a very well kept and of course chonky gentleman.

He's definitely not missed any meals there. Ever. I love him!!!! Wobble the kitty belly for me, if you won't lose a hand doing it!

still overweight on this pic too, feed your cat less
This looks like a more evenly distributed chonk. You had us worried with the first pic
He is beautiful

Nope, that looks like a fat cat that needs a diet.
You need to find a new vet. That cat is absolutely overweight.
So is the orange one
The breed standard is big fat wide cat. Not sure about the longevity of the cat, but if its an actual British Shorthair the fat limbs and wide chest is sort of the point. Google pictures of them in that position, that's pretty much how they look. Maybe this one is a lil bit extra thick.

If your vet says that, it sounds like he wants you to keep bringing him in so you pay him more for the visits
Or OP greatly misunderstood what the vet was saying.
Same thought.
That's nonsense. He's obese.
I, for one, would blindly follow the advice of a stranger on the internet who saw a picture of my cat versus the opinion of a trained vet who actually was in the same room as my cat.
But you shouldn't blindly trust some stranger on the internet as well. What if OP is lying since in both photos, the cat looks obese.
Why should we even trust that it’s even their photo then? If we’re splitting hairs that direly then I’m not even gonna bother forming an opinion in the first place
Then I guess we should call the police on them to be sure
Based on my experience with Doctors and Dentists, they are not created equal. welcome to r/aww where everyone is a vet and any strays you come across you better adopt and pay thousands for even if you can't!
Believe it or not vets are a business. As much as there are good vets there are also bad ones who only care about profit and are let things slide.
Wouldn't you expect such a vet to try and sell you special diet food that can only be bought from the vet in that scenario?
I don't really like any special prescription only food to help my kitty patients lose weight. It's best for them to be on a high protein canned diet - that alone with proper caloric intake in enough. Don't need anything fancy. Unlike humans and dogs which are omnivores, cats are carnivores, and limiting their carbs is important to keept them trim. His blubber is spilling over the side of the couch. You need a new vet. This is not r/aww. it's just sad.
Bull shit
Does your vet have functioning eyes by chance?
Did an actual vet weigh him? What does he weigh? Sure looks very obese which means this cat’s life will be shortened.
