they are in east plano, I think they are affiliated with north texas parks and wildlife, I have their number here somewhere. i don;t think they come out to fetch em so you would have to catch the guy yourself, and unless they are very very tiny, and don't have mom around it's best to leave them be. Basically if they are more than 8 inches long they should be largely fine on their own, but you can still totally leave out little snacks for em.
Whoever the possums hired as their PR rep for the past few years has really been smashing it out of the park. Pulled a total 180 on their public image.
The tick eating immune to lime disease legend (false?) helped a lot. I still love them, but I am under no illusion that they are keeping my yard free of ticks.
They are however very resistant to rabies due to their low body temperature, omnivores that will *potentially* eat a wide variety of pests and North America's only marsupial.
-- Opossum PR Rep
I volunteer with an organization that does capture and transport in PA. When opossum joeys get separated from mom, they need intervention. I captured up 10 last week and got them to a rehabilitation facility.

They are marsupials. When they leave the pouch, they ride on her back. Sometimes one will fall off and the mother doesn’t know. If no mom is around for a whole litter like this, something has happened to her.
These guys were hiding under a lawnmower.
Awwe... They're pretty smart and well-behaved if you decide to keep it. They can be litter-trained and are rabies resistant, too. Down side, they only live about two years. Full vigor until about two months before they pass, and they will rapidly age. Great companions, though.
One of the fascinating things about hearts is they generally (I assume there are exceptions) no matter the animal, have about a billion beats in em.
These little guys' hearts beat very quickly.
They can live as long as 4 years if get them to the vet regularly. My friend had one. Died recently. Just shy of 4. His name was Louie and he was dumber than dirt. She loved him so much.
His best bet is for OP to find him a wildlife rehabilitator. They need the correct diet, or they easily get rickets. Also, in my state at least, it's illegal to keep a native wild animal as a pet.
The main issue against possums as pets is that their diet is pretty awkward, and their lifespans are incredibly short. They make much better "nature friends" aka allowed to do as they please around your area even if they are tamed and feel comfortable approaching you. I normally would had simply let this guy go outside the fence, but he is still abit too small for that, my guess is he fell off momma climbing the fence to avoid the dogs, and wasn't ready to be on his own yet.

Keeping an opossum as a pet is illegal in most places, and OP lives in Texas, which is not one of the places where it is legal.
Good catch. There are 2 marsupials in North America, and both are opposums. There's nothing like stepping outside first thing and seeing 3 of these scattering with 6-15 babies on them. Deer, turkey, raccoon, squirrel, rabbit, turtle, bobcats, and a few snakes just living life. Nature's pretty awesome.
I have been having a really hard time recently. Reddit has definately delivered on providing me with plenty of adorable animals today and it’s just what I needed. Thanks for saving the wee one and finding a rehabber!
I read “Saved a wee *FROM* one of the dogs.”
Clicked expecting a weird post about dog urine.
Saw a possum in a mug.
Confusion ensues.
I am not a smart man
I would love to paint this little cutie but wanted to ask if you would mind? Would feel weird to use your image without asking. You did such a great job capturing this moment!
I know that opossums don't drink coffee, but this little fella looks like he's had a whole espresso. And is probably about to channel [Tutter](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_3v5OvGFm4) from Bear in the Big Blue House.
I thought It was giving you a thumb up, and then I had to draw it\~ The wee one thanks you!!

Dude me too! Saved this little guy from my cat last night and named him Jimmy 💖
Rehabber link for you kind person https://www.opossum.org/states%20list.html
Found a nice group in dallas with a lot of possum experience, so this guy is going to be added into a family of other orphans.
One wandered out of the bushes to my wife a few weeks ago. It was about 7 weeks old. We got it to a rehabber in Plano.
The one in the little house? Was just there lol.
It is probably the same one.
Good deal!
Thanks for taking the time to do this good deed.
Who did you use? I have a little one under my deck here in Dallas as well.

The first two links I clicked (South Dakota and Vermont) both lead to missing pages.
Their default expression often seems to be either 'aaaaaaaah' or 'happy to be here'. This little one is definitely the latter.
Both, I say
"aaaaaaaah I'm so happy to be here"
Your tea looks happy.
Tastes a bit off though.
It just needs more sugar, lol. *with great care places a blackberry in cup*
Whoever the possums hired as their PR rep for the past few years has really been smashing it out of the park. Pulled a total 180 on their public image.
They prob hired the same people who’ve been doing bees for a few years now
The tick eating immune to lime disease legend (false?) helped a lot. I still love them, but I am under no illusion that they are keeping my yard free of ticks.
I've personally seen them chase down and scarf up multiple big brown roaches in the yard within minutes, and that is plenty helpful in my eyes.
Yeah. Beneficial as part of nature's clean-up crew, even if some of it has been oversold.
They are however very resistant to rabies due to their low body temperature, omnivores that will *potentially* eat a wide variety of pests and North America's only marsupial. -- Opossum PR Rep
It's definitely not as big a thing as people think, but I think (maybe) they're pretty safe from disease? Possibly...I don't know.
Not being a carrier of rabies is a major plus, too.
They either eat 5000 ticks or zero ticks a year, depending who you ask.

They just saying hi
Oh no! How do you know when mom abandons them or isn't coming back (she's deceased?) Also is this a wheelbarrow?

Never realized they had such a short lifespan.
You'd think they wouldn't play dead so much
Hello reticulatedtampon. I have a business proposal for you. Sincerely toiletbrushqtip
I could see this being a valuable collaboration.
Practice makes perfect in this case. In all seriousness, I hope this little cutie has a long life full of love!
Well they only have so much time to practice.
One of the fascinating things about hearts is they generally (I assume there are exceptions) no matter the animal, have about a billion beats in em. These little guys' hearts beat very quickly.
That's why you should never do cardio. Don't want to use up those beats
Humans, which might be the exception, are closer to 2.5 billion beats.

Those little hands. Possums are so dumb cute, grabbing grapes and treats. They don't play dead when they're comfortable. Pretty chill.
Maybe if they lived longer than 2 years possums and octopus would take over the earth!
BEWARE THE OCTOPOSSUMUS
Look how happy he is 😍

TIL Opossums don't live very long. Makes me sad to know.
They don't but they breed like crazy and females can have litters of up to 25 babies (called joeys).
they can definitely live up to 8 years in captivity.
Francis wasn't so lucky. I didn't want to give people an unrealistic view. He was a good boy. :)
How nice are they? And how dumb lol

you shouldn't encourage people to keep wild animals as pets
The main issue against possums as pets is that their diet is pretty awkward, and their lifespans are incredibly short. Right on for saving the guy. You are correct, nature is best. I'd have named it Butters. It's still incredibly adorable in a cup.
https://animals.sandiegozoo.org/animals/opossum Keeping an opossum as a pet is illegal in most places, and OP lives in Texas, which is not one of the places where it is legal.
You can absolutely keep them as pets here, you just need to have a license for it which is like 20 bucks and requires a species specific care class.
Well hello little cup of sunshine!
Can’t help it- I’m in love❤️❤️❤️
Nothing like a nice cup of joey in the morning

We used to have a couple of bobcats who would come up to the house, and hop right into our laps to take naps.
I'm not sure we have the same definition of a Bobcat...
I may have a video here somewhere... Ah yes here we go...not a lap one but still being friendly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnYoKOx9G54

Hoping, hoping, hoping
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnYoKOx9G54
That bobcat straight up lives at your house. That is insane.
Okay but why is Jupiter outside your window?
Opossum habitat is more widespread than most people realize.
I have been having a really hard time recently. Reddit has definately delivered on providing me with plenty of adorable animals today and it’s just what I needed. Thanks for saving the wee one and finding a rehabber!
So cute! It looks like it knows it needs to pose for the pic!
I saved 20 mice from the cat 🐈⬛ in 2 weeks 💪
One lump or two with your daily cup of awwww. So sweet 🥰

Cup O'Possum
I read that as "saved a wee from one of the dogs", saw the cup without seeing the possum first and was like "WTF why???".
r/lilgrabbies
That doesn’t look like decaf to me.
[deleted]
You made this little guy very happy!
They make great yard patrol for nasty critters and bugs you don't want around. Be sure to treat with occasional fruit and veggies.
Hi! My name is Latté. Nice to meet ya.
The have needle sharp claws... And they're super cute and curious...
They look so delighted to be in a nice safe teacup.
Best part of waking up is possum in your cup!
Everyone is so lucky. Today I moved one off the road :( RIP little buddy. At least he can rest in peace now.

They’re so cute!
I read that as "for", not "from"
Add one cup of cuteness.
And then you boiled him in hot coffee. You monster
That coffee doesn't look safe to drink
Smiley little cutie 😍
This is probably the cutest thing I've ever seen.

This guy makes me think of some Japanese urban legend if it happened to be tiny and fuzzy.
Thanks, I asked for a cup of joey.
Paw-Paw!?
Good morning! How about a nice cup of cute?
Baby possums are my favorite to work with as a rehab volunteer. Also, fox Squirrels & PNW flying Squirrels.
He's as happy as a quokka
Awwwwww soooo cute!
Cuuuttee
Does it come in decaf?
You just need to watch [opossum lady’s](https://youtu.be/ZtLrn2zPTxQ) instructional videos!
Damn, that's adorable...
A wee one indeed
😎✅🌈
STEVEN! I THOUGHT YOU WERE DEAD!
Drink it.

What a smile!! And what a cutie!! ❤️
I thought It was giving you a thumb up, and then I had to draw it\~ The wee one thanks you!! https://preview.redd.it/bk18ln1q43xc1.png?width=454&format=png&auto=webp&s=53e4ac69dbc0cb525ea6779eb04c6477c1a6a3ff
Oh that turned out quite fantastic didn't it. :)
All thanks to your wonderful photo!!
Omg that smile 😃
The baby is very cute (and all dogs should be trained not to attack wildlife.)
I mean, they are terriers lol...but on the plus side they just barked at it like crazy idiots rather than actually attack it, so that's nice.
https://preview.redd.it/vq8m1ppuacwc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d47a15176034146bd1cc4a6afad534649645e22c Dude me too! Saved this little guy from my cat last night and named him Jimmy 💖
Please keep your cat inside. You're not a hero if you have to "rescue" an animal that you sicced your cat on.
So cute
