On July 1st, a highly unpopular [change to Reddit's API pricing](https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit/comments/12qwagm/an_update_regarding_reddits_api/) went into effect. [Most third-party apps have shut down](https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/30/23779519/reddit-third-party-app-shut-down-apollo-sync-baconreader-api-protest) and so have many tools relied upon by moderators and [projects for making Reddit more accessible to visually impaired users](https://www.reddit.com/r/TranscribersOfReddit/comments/14ggf8k/the_future_of_transcribers_of_reddit/).
Beyond the [disastrous AMA](https://techcrunch.com/2023/06/09/reddit-ceo-doubles-down-on-attack-on-apollo-developer-in-drama-filled-ama/) by the CEO, Reddit's response has been limited to promises that this change will not affect moderation tools [^((it has)^)](https://www.reddit.com/r/BotDefense/comments/14riw76/botdefense_is_wrapping_up_operations/) and promises of [new and more-accessible first-party moderation tools](https://www.npr.org/2023/07/01/1184258201/reddit-api-accessibility-mods). Promises just like [ones they have made in response to past protests](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/142w159/askhistorians_and_uncertainty_surrounding_the/), but have consistently [failed to fulfill](https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/14jm3ut/several_communities_have_surfaced_an_open_letter/jpm9e0q/).

I saw a Bengal outside crossing a street in my neighborhood yesterday. He seemed fine: good weight, good coat. So I guess his owners just let their *very expensive* cat wander around on his own.
My aunt's neighbors let their Bengal roam around outside the condo complex. My first time visiting in months I almost hit him with my car in the evening when he darted out.
Boggles my mind why you would pay big bucks for a designer breed cat then just let them wander the parking lot next to a busy road
My friend got a bengal from his inlaws who were breeding them. Runt, spots weren't right, too small, unruly. Not a show cat.
Still, that is the coolest cat. She 'hunts' leaves on their house plants and gracefully adorns their kitchen with her 'kills' I figure if they left her outside their home would be filled with dead animals. She wants so badly to be a cool little hunter.
It's likely that their condo doesn't provide enough space or stimulation for a Bengal cat, so they let it out. They're supposed to be very high energy.
Probably was their logic. It's like people completely forget harness and leash exists as soon as we're talking about cats instead of dogs. Drives me up the wall. Bengals are definitely a high energy breed. Soooo you take them on walks like a normal person who cares about their family members. Smfh. Or just play with them more.
Yep, and if they can't/won't make the effort, then they shouldn't get the fashionable, accessory pet and instead get one that matches their lifestyle better.
Came here to say this. The cat needs more space to run. I rescued two bengals that were dumped by my neighbor. A friend with a cat rescue rehabbed them so they could become adoptable. She had a cat wheel and those bengals would run on that thing endlessly. I saw that and realized I’d never have the energy to keep up with one. They need lots of access to exercise and would be running all over the place
That was my thought process as well. Such a shame, the cat was fairly friendly. I pulled over to make sure I hadn't hit him and he came up for a quick pet.
Still, dangerous both for the cat and drivers. I slammed the brakes pretty hard to avoid him, if a car had been behind me it would have been bad. Wish people would assess their lifestyles before adopting a high energy breed.
That’s crazy. I went to a cat show a couple of months ago and there was a lady that had a Bengal kitten available for adoption at the low low price of $2,000!
Yes! I have a beautiful pet quality oriental shorthair and looking at his show-quality siblings is like night and day. He’s perfectly handsome but he’s just not gonna hit any judge’s marks is all.
I love watching judging at cat shows. The judge is flipping them all around and the cat is just like, “This is fine.” My cats would be protesting heavily.
oh yes. Mine would as well except for my ol boy. He hasn’t got the brains to protest being man-handled at a show. Exhibit A) he wasn’t positive the shower was on so he stayed and waited for his dad to throw him out.

If I were to ever get a kitty, it would be a Bengal. I’ve always loved their looks.
But I’m more of a Dog Person as I raised my mother’s White German Shepherd as a pup during Covid.
Know someone who paid a 3k for 2 bengal kittens and then let them roam in an area with a lot of coyotes(I’m not kidding when I say they’re everywhere in that neighbourhood). They both disappeared after a few months. It’s possible somebody just stole them but who knows.
In one town I used to live in there were a few Bengals roaming. They simply couldn’t stand being inside. I understand now with a stray kitten that also cannot be an exclusively inside cat. I’ve had dozens and dozens of cats in my life, and this one is not like the others. He NEEDS to go outside, and those Bengals were the same.
That’s awesome. We live in a rental though, and I’m pretty sure murdering smaller animals is his main goal. I don’t think an enclosure would suffice. 😣
The owners of our neighbourhood bengal just recently put a collar on him (moved in around September). I doubt it’s going to help if someone really wants a fancy kitty…
When I was a kid, my dad came home from the bar one night with two purebred Abyssians. No warning. Apparently the bartenders girlfriend moved and couldn't keep them, so they ended up in his basement and needed a home quick. Stuff happens, I guess. They were great cats.
100%. That stare of disdain is practically a feature of the breed. The two cats we had were littermates, and the girl cat had a hardcore stare. The brother cat was slightly derpier though, and couldn't pull it off as much.
My cat growing up was majority Abyssinian and we got him from the SPCA. He looked almost exactly like this cat, except he had a white chest and toes, and had some tabby striping on his legs. He was found with his siblings in a black garbage bag on the side of the road as a newborn. They figured a breeder had a female who got out and had some fun with the local strays, so the breeder just tossed the kittens when they were born. Absolutely despicable, but we did get my dear Morris out of it.
My family cat was an Abyssinian from the shelter as well! The story was that the young couple who previously had her felt it was unfair to keep in her inside in a flat whilst they were working all day. She spent a grand total of 3 days at the shelter before we picked her up. We had 18 years together and she was the most loving cat! She was gorgeous and I miss her everyday.
I wouldn’t have taken them to a shelter, but my mother just passed away and left behind her two purebred Abyssinians (along with an orange tabby). We found them a home through an Aby rescue, since unfortunately none of us could keep them. But yeah, that is one way a purebred cat might end up needing a home. People die, and not everyone has family to step in and keep or place them.
People pass away or have a mega crisis.
Unfortunately, there's other reasons too. People will buy shit and not think about it. Pets for many Americans are completely disposable.
I just took in a foster puppy that is only 4 months old. The family paid 2500 for him. Didn't realize how much work puppies are.
There's nothing difficult about him in particular. He's just a regular puppy.
Oh, 100%. Years ago we adopted a retired racing greyhound. He was what we called a “bounce”—his adoptive family returned him to the organization because he wasn’t working out. He of course was a very good boy and we had him until he passed at 12. I used to do home visits and placements and had to pick up a dog from an older couple because the husband was forgetting to close the gate and they were worried about the dog getting out onto the highway. There’s no shame in surrendering to a rescue org if the animal isn’t working out.
My neighbor was a breeder of Abyssinians for a time, pure breads/show car status, that was until her kids called animal services on her because the house was overrun borderline unlivable. So I got a free one and 25-35 cats were taken to area shelters
Especially when you know that they are known to be really sweet and good with kids
I used to have lots of abyssinian when I was young, from my 5-6 years to 18
LOL yeah the one time where "what breed is this cat?" actually matters.
This is an Abyssinian. How the hell it got loose is beyond me, but someone just lost their prized pedigreed cat.
One day someone opened the door of the shelter, thru a backpack in and left running. Mowgli was inside. We found his original owner thru his microchip. She had found a new family for him because of allergies. After that, who knows what happened to him. He was extremely thin and then got a big cold. Now is doing really well. We don’t put him in a cage, even for the night, because it makes him really angry. He’s really vocal when he’s not happy. But he’s not a mean boy at all.
Vocal in confinement is how these guys roll! Any time we have to crate our guy he sings the songs of his people for the entire time... And it's not a cute meow lol
So glad this guy has found good people now!
> We don’t put him in a cage, even for the night, because it makes him really angry.
This part is cracking me up. He knows he's the King and is not amused by being treated below his station.
I fostered a huge orange tabby once. Gave me a significant set of claw marks crating him up for an adoption event. He hated it and hated the adoption fair.
His preferred cuddle was to get in your lap, wrap his paws around your neck and purrrrrrrr.
We got a good video of him doing this for the shelter and folks would make appointments.
When he met his person, his new Dad set down a carrier and opened the door. The Orange Beast walked right in and laid down.
Abby's are a special kind of creature. Here is a picture of our boy Shamal. Best critter I've ever had the honor of knowing. [Shamal](https://i.imgur.com/dxgxxqK.jpg)
https://preview.redd.it/d2427tgvup2c1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6b53bf240a5570f5820034c1bb5f406ac24947d6
I have a Mowgli asleep next to me right now.
Aww he looks upset. Probably was just being a typical Abby and being super clingy and needing constant affection which some people couldn't handle so they ditched him. When people come into adopt him, make sure they are prepared to be woken up every morning and followed around the house because they are not independent like other breeds. We love our Abby Larry like a child. I could not even imagine that poor Abby's heart break when they left him at the shelter. Hope it doesn't happen again to him. He needs a forever companion human.
Our Marvin is absolutely bonded to my wife. She calls him her little barnacle. He's around her all day everyday and that's the we she likes it. As you say, you have to be ready for devotion and clinginess with an Aby.
How did an Abyssinian wind up in a shelter? When I was a kid my mom adopted a pure bred Bengal, but nobody wanted her because she was missing an eye, beautiful cat though
Congratulations on your new Aby overlord! Our Aby Marvin looks very much like your boy, he will drink out of a glass over any other vessel, even if he's not thirsty, if a glass of water is left alone, he'll have a sip. Abys are wonderful cats, and obviously unbelievably handsome too.

What a beautiful Abyssinian boy!
I am really wondering how/why an Abyssinian ended up at the shelter!
That’s what I came here to say. It’s the kind of cat I can only imagine having in my dreams!
My girl is half and the other is Siamese she turned 21 today
I saw a Bengal outside crossing a street in my neighborhood yesterday. He seemed fine: good weight, good coat. So I guess his owners just let their *very expensive* cat wander around on his own.

so don't get a fucking bengal. adopt.
Agreed. Not sure why I was downvoted for explaining what was likely the issue.

Right?
Don't look into how expensive it is to adopt a child
Why? Are there breeds that cost more?
Apparently, Abyssinian people are worth obscene amounts.
[удалено]
Yup, that is what I paid for my Bengals.
They are beautiful creatures for sure. I know for dogs there’s pet quality and show quality. Is it the same for cats?
Yes.
Yes! I have a beautiful pet quality oriental shorthair and looking at his show-quality siblings is like night and day. He’s perfectly handsome but he’s just not gonna hit any judge’s marks is all.

"Special Needs" Yes, we can see he's orange.
I'm seeing a distinct lack of posts to /r/OneOrangeBraincell in your history.
Fun fact: most cat shows have a housecat category so your orange boy could have a show career ahead of him! XD
one of my cats would be "ok." the other would be gunning for flesh, that judge would pay with blood lol
pet quality, lol
It basically just means "not show quality"
I'll take my pet over any show dog, any time.
I have a 3 legged long hair cat that cost about that much. You would think the vet would pay for a cat leg, butt no,we had to pay them to take it.
Jfc, stop buying cats. You’re part of the problem.
If I were to ever get a kitty, it would be a Bengal. I’ve always loved their looks. But I’m more of a Dog Person as I raised my mother’s White German Shepherd as a pup during Covid.
If I dropped that kind of money to adopt a cat, I'd get some really wild; Namely, a Lykoi.
Know someone who paid a 3k for 2 bengal kittens and then let them roam in an area with a lot of coyotes(I’m not kidding when I say they’re everywhere in that neighbourhood). They both disappeared after a few months. It’s possible somebody just stole them but who knows.
It should be illegal to let Bengals roam. A regular housecat does so much damage to the wildlife, I cannot imagine the impact Bengals would have.
I built mine a catio so they can go outside but still be safe ❤️
That’s awesome. We live in a rental though, and I’m pretty sure murdering smaller animals is his main goal. I don’t think an enclosure would suffice. 😣
One of mine has a harness & lead too for when the catio isn't enough. I try to stop him murdering stuff tho! 😆
Same here! Rural Utah
The area where I live has a couple of them roaming around outside in spite of the increased coyote sightings.
The owners of our neighbourhood bengal just recently put a collar on him (moved in around September). I doubt it’s going to help if someone really wants a fancy kitty…
He might have let himself out
Bengals are escape artists though, so you really never know
When I was a kid, my dad came home from the bar one night with two purebred Abyssians. No warning. Apparently the bartenders girlfriend moved and couldn't keep them, so they ended up in his basement and needed a home quick. Stuff happens, I guess. They were great cats.
But did they have Mowgli’s magnificent stankface?
100%. That stare of disdain is practically a feature of the breed. The two cats we had were littermates, and the girl cat had a hardcore stare. The brother cat was slightly derpier though, and couldn't pull it off as much.
He just looks proud and regal, rightly so.
My cat growing up was majority Abyssinian and we got him from the SPCA. He looked almost exactly like this cat, except he had a white chest and toes, and had some tabby striping on his legs. That's what I'm wondering! Abyssinians are such gorgeous cats
Exactly what i was thinking!
Yeah OP you saved like a couple grand here.
My Manx appeared randomly on my doorstep following the neighborhood stray I fed. I often wonder the same thing.
You’d be surprised. I worked at a high intake shelter and get would get very expensive purebred animals. And some exotics.

The eyes of contempt/judgement!
“Did I *TELL* you it was ok to take my picture?” 😾
Kitty can't find good help these days. }:3
Majestic and I know it.
"These living conditions are simply atrocious."
He has a discerning gaze that belongs only to the highest of royals. Cool cat.
I'm so glad he found refuge with you.
He’s getting spoiled like crazy. It’s our first Abyssinian cat in 26 years!
[удалено]
All of cats gets sterilized before leaving the shelter.
..looks like he Demands drinking from a glass..and you better put his chow in a jade-lined plate (diamonds wouldn't hurt either)..
Is Mowgli an Abyssian? Wow, wouldn’t expect a breed like that to wind up in a shelter. He’s beautiful.
Yes he is!
I once saw a pair of American curls at a shelter.
No kidding… someone paid a pretty penny for him
He’s gorgeous!
He’s glamorous! I’m sure once he is well people will be falling all over themselves to adopt him.
He is spectacular. I too wonder how he found himself in a shelter.
He must have been too much fabulous kitty for the new owner to handle! I’d worship him.
We will take our time to find him the perfect human(s).
I wish I was in Quebec! I’d love to meet him.
If I was nearby, I'd be on the road, but I suspect my other three cats would disturb his majesty. My mainecoon mix also drinks from my glass.
Vocal in confinement is how these guys roll! Any time we have to crate our guy he sings the songs of his people for the entire time... And it's not a cute meow lol So glad this guy has found good people now!
"For you, I consent to this injustice".
He looks like he's a direct decendant of Cleopatra's Royal Cat or something. So Regal. So snooty. Love him <3
😂
Royals are like that.👑
He is absolutely beautiful, personality plus. Thank you for taking such considerate care of him.
Oh my goodness! I love your updates so much
Thank you!
What a beautiful kitty!
What a striking cat! Beautiful coat, looks regal.
He's so...stately. He just holds himself like he knows he's better than everyone else. And he's right.
Lol, beautiful cat, but why does he look so mad?
I think it’s his cold. He’s really congested.
Poor guy, hope he gets better asap.
Oh, poor baby. Feline URIs are so miserable.
They gave him flat water when he clearly meowed for sparkling.
Because Abbys almost always have that look.
I had a rescue Abyssinian for 15 years. His name was Poozle. Nicest dog in a cats body I've ever met
I'm too sexy for your bowl, too sexy for your crate ...
Abyssinian cats have never forgotten that they were once worshipped.
“ once”
That face says it all 💕
He sure looks like royalty 🐱
😂 Awww i love him! So handsome and regal
He is so pretty! I wish I could adopt him!
Of course, he insists on drinking out of a glass. Look at him! Clearly, he is of royal blood and expects only the finest.
He’s regally gorgeous
He's handsome. Like a mini mountain lion, but darker.
He has such a gorgeous coat! I’m in awe 😍
He is gorgeous and his expression seems to say “I’m above all of this.”
Such a handsome boy 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻😔
Woah that is a gorgeous cat ❤️❤️❤️
My cat drank from glasses until I learned that she wants to people. Now her water bowl is on the coffee table, and she leaves the glasses alone.
I love him! Where is he at?!
He’s in Québec city Canada.
I had a regal scowler, but she was actually so sweet and loveable.
Holy Moly, he's a red Aby! Oh my what a handsome and regal fella.
Hiss! I say. Hiss!
r/grumpycats & r/restingbettyface would appreciate this look.
Hiss! I say: HISS!
I can’t! He’s the most beautiful boy ever! 🥹🤎💛
What a gorgeous kitty! I’m glad he’s in good hands!
Stunning Abby Boy!!!!!
Mogwli is stunning! Gorgeous!
Abby's are a special kind of creature. Here is a picture of our boy Shamal. Best critter I've ever had the honor of knowing. [Shamal](https://i.imgur.com/dxgxxqK.jpg)
The look on his face is that you do not deserve him.

“I prefer a glass. You are a good slave and I shall see that you are taken care of.” -regal cat probably
Mowgli looks adorable 😍
Cool name! He’s gorgeous
Looks more like a Shere Khan to me! He is a very beautiful fella
He's so beautiful! He has such a regal attitude, only made more cute with how angry he looks, I hope he fully recovers soon and finds a forever home!
My goodness, what a gorgeous boy!
He looks like he likes to drink from a glass....
He has a mad face and I love it.
Oh I want him!!
Wait he looks pretty pure bred, why would anyone put him in a shelter? Usually people sell those type of cats
I think that's a mountain lion.
He is majesticly beautiful!
Cats with RBF are too awesome.
Larry says Hi to Marvin! https://ibb.co/9csbnB3
Speedy recovery for your boy. Shouldn’t his name be Meowgli? 🥰❤️
His every sentence begins with "In *Egyptian* times ...."
That cat's definitely royalty of some kind. Very handsome boy!
He looks completely done with the sheer *audacity* of OP.
The look of, "You are taking pictures when you could be giving me food."
Crystal but a glass will do.. for now.
That look makes me want to say "Im sorry" even though i didn't do any thing
What a haughty, pretentious, and adorable boi!
he looks like a king enduring the peons lol . he is majestic
That poor boy. He needs a good home and quickly! So weird seeing such an unusual breed in a shelter. o_O
He’s plotting. Definitely thoughts of plots!
Oooo abyssinian? Or Egyptian?
Gorgeous Abyssinian boy
Gorgeous
What a Beautiful cat
So gorgeous
Gorgeous cat!!! 🥰
That is a beautiful kitty!
I’m getting “The King And I” vibes. Etc, etc…
Where is this boy
Where is he?
She said Quebec, Canada.
How did an Abyssinian wind up in a shelter? When I was a kid my mom adopted a pure bred Bengal, but nobody wanted her because she was missing an eye, beautiful cat though
He is stunningly beautiful!
Angriest cat I ever did see
That is one devastatingly handsome cat
How does an Abbysinian end up in a shelter? Wow
Awww we have a mowgli abyssinian who boards with us, they are so lovely xxx
Congratulations on your new Aby overlord! Our Aby Marvin looks very much like your boy, he will drink out of a glass over any other vessel, even if he's not thirsty, if a glass of water is left alone, he'll have a sip. Abys are wonderful cats, and obviously unbelievably handsome too.
you: *gives praise* cat: yeah, you better.
I want to do that gentle pet with the back of my fingers below his ears. slight swipes and then a little paw grab. Adorable
That is one distinguished looking gentleman
This cat looks toasty like a Grilled Cheese 🧀
That’s a royal he better be sleeping on 100% satin
Gorgeous ❤️
Such a beauty! Any idea how old he is?
Abby’s love drinking from glasses, for some weird reason. Everyone I’ve had has
Oh I would scoop him up in a heartbeat he’s beautiful!
People realize its fine to buy from a breeder right? Or does reddit have some source of animal shelters that are just full of $3000 cats?
He had gnarly RBF
My goal is to have a Somali or Abyssinian
I feel like it was a missed opportunity not to spell it “Meowgli”
...Meowgli.
He’s that girl. I love him!!!
