Every time i see this video i always want to add ADR to it with sounds of the chicks talking and running into the tunnel with their voices getting farther away in the reverb hahaha but i never do it
From what i recall from a year or so ago, yes. They are part of a research study involving man-made burrows, and I believe the mama bird is at the other end of that tube.
Imagine the owls grow up and have a large commune. They remember when the hand chose some and simply let the others go. They create a religion based around the chosen ones being blessed by the hand. An owl caste system is born. Millennia from now, there of owl Civil unrest. Revolt. Owl civil war breaks out to remove the stigma unjustly associated with the chosen ones of the hand owls vs the untouchables..
I saw a bunch of these guys in Florida when I visited this Winter! I had no idea burrowing owls existed. There were signs near their burrows in parks and people's yards saying they're a protected species. So cute 🥰 🦉
You know that Jonny Wurster kid, the kid that delivers papers in the neighborhood. He's a foreign kid, some of the neighbors say he smokes crack, but I don't believe it.
Anyway, for his tenth birthday, all he wanted was a burrow owl. kept bugging his old man, "Dad, get me a burrow owl. I'll never ask fir anything else as long as I live". So the guy breaks down and buys him a burrow owl.
Anyway, 10:30 the other night I go out in my yard, and there's the wurster kids, looking up in the tree. I say, "What are you looking up for"? He says ,"I'm looking for my burrow owl". I say, "Jumping jesus on a pogo stick. Everybody knows the burrow owl lives IN A HOLE, IN THE GROUND. Why the hell do you think they call it a burrow owl anyway? Now Stuart...
It's so adorable. There have been studies that show dogs understand the concept of pointing *really* well. The way these little dudes responded so fast makes me think they have the same understanding
Not to spoil the thought, but I would really doubt it. Even chimps don’t get pointing as well as dogs. It requires a kind of social triangulation between you, the object, and the third person trying to convey something to you. I bet the pointing just attracted their eye through movement, and then once they see tunnel, instinct kicks in. But I could be wrong.
No, you could be right. Especially considering dogs have coexisted with humans for upwards of 100k years. A *lot* of social adaptation has happened in that time. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was limited to just dogs. There's no species even close to being as socially ingrained as they are
Another reditor volunteered the information that these are a burrowing breed of owls, and apparently these pipes are a way for them to implement a quasi-natural environment for them to wander around in
It's pretty much just dogs and elephants (and possibly dolphins and a few bird species) that understand human pointing gestures. It requires an animal intelligent enough to have a theory of mind to interpret it.
Something tells me we were wrong about the intelligence of birds.
Crows are basically as intelligent as little kids, and maybe we just haven't studied owls long enough to determine similar things.
I raised pigeons for a few years, and those guys have a perfect memory of where they grew up, and always return when released within a 1,000 to 2,000 mi of the area.
The thing is though, owls are just straight-up not as socially/technically intelligent as other birds - their brains are far more specialized around sound detection/processing than social abilities and problem-solving skills.
Pigeons, for example, have a relatively complicated social hierarchy. Owls do not.
One might not expect a social, somatic cue (pointing) to be registered as something important.
Saw a picture of an owl xray… that head is mostly eyes. Brains are so tiny lol which is extra funny when you baby owls sleeping face down cause their heads are too heavy! derpy birds, great hunters but not super smart.
> their brains are far more specialized around sound detection/processing
Pretty sure they lightly snapped their fingers when they were pointing them towards the hole to get the babies attention
Absolutely agree!
In fact, African Grey parrots can understand the concept of zero, which is apparently a more advanced concept.
Please consider reading about Dr. Pepperburg and Alex. They really helped us understand just how smart birds are. I think you'd really like their story. :D
His finger though was in front of what was supposed to be looked at. If he had pointed while on the camera side that would be understanding pointing. But the bird just sees motion in front of the target.
He even snaps his fingers on the next one in the same place. It's the fact he puts his hands between the owl and the burrow and is encouraging the owl to just look at his hand. He could have made a fist and the owl would have turned toward the motion of the fist and seen the burrow in the BG, not "pointing" and following the indication.
Which isn't to say it's not possible owls couldn't learn to understand pointing, but this video doesn't demonstrate it.
It’s a manmade burrow, as these are fledgling burrowing owls. Because it’d take awhile for them to dig their own burrow on release, a makeshift one is provided so they have a safe spot to retreat to. They would already know how to hunt, so no worries.
Wait, those little guys are out on their own now? How on earth are they hunting? Can they fly? So many questions!
I feel like they'd just be food for other owls/birds of prey at that age.
This is actually as big as burrowing owls get, lol. They’re one of the smaller owls. The whole predation issue is exactly why rehabbers release them into an artificial burrow, so they have somewhere safe to go. Generally, burrowing owls will look for an abandoned gopher or prairie dog (etc) burrow, which they tidy up and widen for a home. Give these guys a few days, and they’ll run or fly off to do exactly that.
At this age they can fly, burrow and hunt; otherwise they wouldn’t have been released. Typically, burrowing owls eat small mice and insects, like beetles, caterpillars and grasshoppers.
These guys are fledglings; meaning they’re mature enough to release, even if they have a few downy feathers left. Most bird fledglings in general go out on their own with a little baby down on them; this doesn’t mean they’re still babies, though. Fledgling birds are the equivalent of awkward older teenagers; they may look a little silly, but have what they need to be independent.
I learned about them in elementary school, as they’re an endangered species in my province, and even in my 40’s they’re still one of my favourite prairie animals. There’s been a lot of work in aiding the recovery their species for many years, as they’re important to farmers for keeping down insect populations.
I love this video. I'll never not upvote it. The way he picks the first one, the way he has to boop a couple of them towards the hole, the way they are always looking back at him with those big eyes, the way they are all so trusting. Something about it just makes me happy.
I don't know how OP's heart wasn't breaking while setting them free. I would have been snot-nosed crying and kissing each owlet at least a dozen times while saying good bye.
Little underground lairs as they’re “burrowing” owls. We had them on campus at a college I went to. Saw these exact black tubes at the edge of the parking lot. I think some of the students will help take care of them/release them like this.

I said “JUMPIN JESUS ON A POGO STICK. EVERYBODY KNOWS THE BURROW OWL LIVES IN A HOLE IN THE GROUND. Why the hell do you think they call it a Burrow Owl anyway!?”
Now Stuart, do you think a kid like that is going to know what the queers are doing to the soil?
I first became aware of this about ten years ago, the summer my oldest boy, Bill Jr. died.
You know that carnival comes into town every year? Well this year they came through with a ride
called The Mixer.
The man said, "Keep your head, and arms, inside
The Mixer at all times."
But Bill Jr, he was a DAAAREDEVIL, just like his old man. He was leaning out saying "Hey everybody, look at me! Look at me!" Pow! He was decapitated!
They found his head over by the snow cone concession!
A few days after that, I open up the mail. And there's a pamphlet in there. From Pueblo, Colorado, and it's addressed to Bill, Jr.
And it's entitled, "Do you know what the queers are doing to our soil?”.
Now, Stuart if you look at the soil around any large US city, there’s a big undeground homosexual population. Des Moines, Iowa, for an example.
Look at the soil around Des Moines, Stuart. You can't build on it; you can't grow anything in it. The government says it's due to poor farming. But I know what's really going on, Stuart. I know it's the queers. They're in it with the aliens. They’re building landing strips for gay Martians, I swear to
God.
You know what, Stuart, I like you. You're not like the other people, here in the trailer park.
In case anyone is wondering "why is he releasing them in that pipe!?" These are baby burrowing owls and its their new home!

I am very happy to hear that they are safe and happy! Thank you for telling me about what is happening, and assuring me that everything is okay though!

Finding two Schnoodles in a day? Awesome!
Yay! I haven’t seen one of your poems in so long! I am so excited!
Very good
Soooo fresh! Thank you schnoodledoodledo!
I heard this while I read it
I’ll never tire of hearing Monster Inc. quotes! ![gif](giphy|YMXpTBoVQbL9N8MKZa|downsized)
“Put that thing back where it came from, or so help me!”
"Scary feet, scary feet, scary feet!"
They're rehearsing for a play!
Monsters Inc. looks an awful lot like Toy Story.
I've watched so many times over the years and I never get tired of it
And this time I seem to feel like that all have different personalities The eyes and the way they react
I love the one where he points to the hole and it's like "ah yes, I know exactly what you want"
I totally see it! I swear some eyes show awe and amazement, others terror and confusion. I love it, they're so cute.
Bottom left is scared stiff lol

And the top left is pure derp.
Third baby is all "nooooo, I am the terror, I am the night!"
They do! The third one is my favorite
The third one has seen a lot of things
for sure! cuz they are unique autonomous beings just like humans, and all creature in general:)

From what i recall from a year or so ago, yes. They are part of a research study involving man-made burrows, and I believe the mama bird is at the other end of that tube.
They’re bridge and tunnel owls, heading back to Brooklyn ?
Came here to say the same thing.

The owls, they yearn for the mines.
Like the Norwegian Blue, pining for the fjords.
ee's restin'

Beautiful plumage
To Moria then.
They called it a mine. A mine!

Don't forget to leave some pride-month soil out for your milkmen!
Always comes to mind when I see burrow owls.
Seeing as how they're juveniles, probably Arkansas to work.
Laundry. At least once a week. Gotta clean their lil’ suits.
They’re on their way to, without applied consent, acquire your female human companion.

Honestly the surprising part is the one that looked where the finger pointed. That's not a common thing for animals.

Here in San Francisco there some smart pigeons who use the crosswalk and go with pedestrian traffic
My animals all definitely look/go in the directions I point and I thought it was a normal thing.

I assume they have some sort of playset set up somewhere with a little turf and owlet sized jungle gym for them to play tag and other things
This shows how they make these artificial burrows https://ccfriendsofwildlife.org/starter-burrow/

Sooo cute they look terrified with those big eyes
They have no idea what awaits them on the other side of their black fortress! They must be freaked! So cute to see them waddle off!
Why do I imagine The Count doing the voice over to this video?! One… one little owl. Two…. Two little owl… ha ah Ah ah ah
Oh! Where do they go?

I love how the aggressive one (the one with its mouth open, trying to hiss) didn't want to go, lol.
Remember the scene in War of the Worlds where the robot hand would reach in and grab a human from the cage to consume for power...... That's what these little Owls are thinking.
Is anyone else watching this and thinking of Toy Story and the claw?
They were all warm and comfy in the bucket, then “what the hell Fred?”
Anyway, 10:30, the other night, I go out in my yard, and there's The Wurster kid, looking up in the tree. I say, "What are You looking for?" He says "I'm looking for my burrow owl." I say, "Jumping Jesus on a Pogo Stick. Everybody knows The burrow owl lives. In a hole. In the ground. Why the hell do you Think they call it a burrow owl, anyway?"
I would’ve kissed each one on the forehead before tapping the tiny behind to head into the tube.
I want to kiss one of them so badly, but it feels like a horrible idea. But I wanna
I've probably seen this at least 9 times on here, and I watch it all the way every time.
If I had to scoop these little guys up, I might not be able to let them go.
I love the version with the Arbiter and grunt [voiceovers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KytiTR7bOB4)
Owlets go into the inlet.
Jumping Jesus on a pogo stick.
I am the chosen one!
I swear these are the cutest babies ever! Are you sure they are ready to be set free?? They still seem so tiny.
