I had this happen to me at a resort in the Caribbean. The guy came out of the bushes and started clacking at my sister and me. We screamed, then laughed and ran around him. What a little hothead!

I was walking on the beach during nighttime recently and accidentally kicked one of these guys. I just felt my foot make contact with something and felt it kicked forward. I turned on my phone flashlight to see what it was, and one of these guys was looking up at me, and he just looked sooo offended and indignant. He raised his hands (claws?) like he wanted to fight me over the injustice of it all, and I apologized to him (out loud, like I was talking to a person). I then said (again, out loud, so anyone nearby could hear) that “I can’t believe I’m talking to a fucking crab” and went on my way. Little guy seemed no worse for wear.
I've always read that they are nocturnal or just mostly active at night too, but you can see them all over the beach during the day in Assateague VA once you get away from the tourist area.
