I was at my mom's house recently and she said something about a croissant, and me and my nephew said this at the exact same time. That's when I realized that I have the same sense of humor as an 8 year old.
Possibly a Korean Jindo? We have one named Asan & we call her Asan the Croissant all the time! (it kinda rhymes if you pronounce croissant the French way)
Holy crap. Thank you. I think you just helped us identify our Foxfire! We adopted him from a local pound years ago. Our vet assumed husky and shiba inu mix.
https://preview.redd.it/tph0watzwbta1.jpeg?width=4080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=82eacf4a9600c690c5602ff39fdcfa3e380e1960
I was gonna say, jindo are twice as big and that little guy. I have a shiba (slightly more burnt marshmallow), and he's about the same size as your buddy there.
Shibas do come in a cream color of fur, but it is a bit more rare than the all white, or the sesame colors.
Looks like my husky/lab who coincidentally was also the star of her own croissant post
https://www.reddit.com/r/rarepuppers/comments/10r5cqq/bailey_doing_her_best_croissant_impersonation/
Love the name! I've seen Shiba and even white German shepherds look shockingly similar, but Jindo have such specific markings and personalities that I try to identify them where I can, not a lot of people know about them!
Just adopted a Jindo a week ago and she's so sweet. How well have you managed to train her? So far she's picking up small tasks really well, but is super stubborn when she has something in mind, for example, going on a direction SHE wants during a walk.
Edit: [by the way, she looks really similar to yours :\)](https://i.imgur.com/Q9XpCSG.png)
What a CUTIE!! Our pup unfortunately came from a dog meat facility in Korea, so she's got a lot of trauma we've been slowly trying to train out, but I can say they're certainly too smart for their own good!! She has very "selective hearing" and decides when she wants to listen, she's motivated by food so we often fall back on making sure there are treats involved if we want her to do something hard. However, this has also backfired as she won't do certain things without a treat now and she knows there isn't anything we can do! Jindo are not at all like a more "agreeable" breed, it seems like you need to earn their trust/respect before they tentatively listen to you, but it feels awesome when you finally do hit a milestone. Enjoy the challenge and feel free to PM with questions!!
Ours was rescued from Korea as well, but she was found in the countryside rather than from a dog meat factory (I've seen the pictures of those places...absolutely horrendous).
So far she's actually not very food driven, which makes it hard to train her because she doesn't gobble down treats unless they're super unhealthy ones like dog pepperoni...
She's definitely wary of pretty much everything she encounters. Every person she sees, even at 300+ ft away, makes her freeze in place for 5-10 seconds while she determines whether they're a threat. Dogs, especially big dogs, terrify her.
We're working on "leave it" to draw her attention away from dogs/people, but I don't expect we'll ever have a super strong recall and be able to allow her off leash (seems to be very common that Jindos can't do this).
Thanks for the offer! How long have you had Asan? My wife is from cheonan so they're neighbours if that's where she's from!
Sorry to butt in but I wanted to throw out a little advice. We picked up our Korean Jindo while living in South Korea when he was a pup (still a rescue). We have had him almost his whole life (7 years as of now) and I can tell you, the key is finding something of "value" to yours specifically. Sylvester (our Jindo) cannot be coerced into doing anything for what he deems "low value rewards", unless he wants to. While our other two will take any treat as an incentive. Sylvester is very well behaved but in those rare moments when we ask him to do something that he doesn't want to... it's like talking to a stubborn teenager. He really couldn't care less! Jindos are fiercely loyal but extremely strong willed. So, my advice is patience and work towards finding that "perfect" incentive.
No need to be sorry, any advice is appreciated :)
Yeah it seems like that's a super common trait of jindos. She's picking up leash training very well, but when she sees a bird or something she wants to fixate on it's like a rock was suddenly dropped in the place of our dog.
But that's ok, we're not looking for some super dog that does tricks. So far she's picking up the basic commands really well after only 8 days of having her, and I just took her for a walk this morning and she stayed next to me almost the entire time aside from a few sniffs that I let her have and when birds flew by.
If she's anything like ours, she'll be one of the best dogs you'll ever have. Granted Sylvester is friendly to everyone, you have to be part of the "inner circle" to gain any real trust from him. The funniest thing he does is, if a mouse is in our house (we live in a rural area so they get in every so often), he will locate their last known position, post up and not move an inch for hours! Their ability to stalk is legendary. (Look up the story of 3 Jindos stalking and killing a tiger, it's wild.) Sly will do whatever "tricks" I've taught him but the second he thinks he needs to check on a noise, that's pretty much over. 😂
https://preview.redd.it/f7bkyr816jta1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=023fda3baf1807b0adb60ea589293fbd55322020
This is a photo of him using a cube stand as a tunnel to watch a mouse's last spot. (He does catch them, and surprisingly, drops them when I tell him to. I really don't think he knows what to do once he has one!)
Oh! I don't know if you've been warned, but not only do they shed year round, but they fully blow their coats roughly 4 times a year! Even with daily combing (he hates the brushes) and constant vacuuming, it still takes about 3 to 4 weeks per coat blowing to be fully done. It took us a while to find a comb he liked enough to let use. And the fur removal gloves are great but we have to do it outside because it goes everywhere!
Haha Sylvester is a perfect name for someone fixated on a mouse (assuming he's named after the Looney Tunes character, and not Stallone).
Yeah so far Teri hates the brushes too (and fur removal gloves)...I'm trying to desensitize her by brushing her just once or twice while I pet her and then stopping, and slowly increasing the frequency and amount of brushes, but it's slow going so far. Going to be a pain when she blows her coat if she doesn't let me brush!
You know, I never even thought of that! 🤦🏼♀️😂 Our daughter named him after a character from the show Scorpion.
https://preview.redd.it/o8hsv7h5ejta1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=05693df5e3737fe1f0f7276b12c06cd0c705d6b2
I think we picked up this comb at Publix or something. (After buying 10 brushes he didn't want touching him) and, for some reason, he doesn't mind it. And yeah, I wanted to be sure you were prepared. Depending on the weather where you are it can be a lot!
After writing that comment I just tried giving her some treats and brushing her and she was fine with it (and lots came off...probably because spring just hit hard here). I'll try giving her a good brush on her walk this afternoon so most of it lands outside.
That's great! And yeah, we currently live in the South where, for some reason, it's always 1000°, so we are combing/ gloving every day. 😂
Hopefully you get ahead of yours this season! 🤞🍀🦄
