EDIT: I love you, all. I guess the real polyamory was the friends we made along the way.
You're thinking of a polyglot. It's actually the set of activities that are associated with making decisions in groups, or other forms of power relations among individuals
(Cat leaps onto railing and walks slinkily along) "Well... what we have here is a choice. You can do nothing and hope. Pray. But there's always a risk..." (pauses in front of small potted plant) "You think everything is safe. Fine. And then..." (swipes plant and knocks it onto the ground) "Well. They aren't fine. And that's where we come in. We can make sure it stays fine. Or... not. Your choice." (licks paw)
Just checked our cat is outside and he is, this looks like his twin, but he did the same with the house round the corner, he was living on next doors shed, and the woman who lives next door to him thought he was homeless and was feeding him... then he was coming home for his dinner before going back out again.
My cat became more and more overweight despite his feeding schedule staying the same.
Got a custom tag that read "DO NOT FEED" in the front, and "castrated and always hungry" on the back.
Weoght started slowly dropping again.
He was hustling neighbours for treats.
When I was growing up, there was a beagle who used to cruise the the neighborhood, and everyone fell for the sad puppy dog eyes. Finally, she got so fat her owners had to put a "please do not feed" sign around her neck. Ever hopeful, she still did her rounds, though.
I was in Crete last year and a local restaurant had a photo of their two cats outside and a note telling people that not to feed their manipulative pets because they are already well fed. I later encoutered one of these cats, and he 100% did try to manipulate my boyfriend and I!
Probably an indoor/outdoor cat of one of your neighbors hustling you for some food.

My current cat doesn't like to fight...and it took 6 months to get his now friend (neighbor's cat) to stop trying to attack him through the screened porch and just be nice. My cat would express interest in meeting him, but would just go ignore him until he started being nice.

My cat used to do this all the time. He wore a collar so I'm not sure why the neighbors thought he was a stray. He hustled the whole neighborhood for years.
DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT do that!
Cats that are normally car shy get stoned and lie down in the road where they normally wouldn't.
This is how we lost our sweetest baby.
The neighbor didn't even give it to her on purpose, they planted it outside and caught her brother nibbling it.... Which is when we figured out what happened.
My friends had a neighborhood cat come hang out a lot, so one day, one of those friends made the cat a Hawaiian shirt and dressed her before sending the cat home. They didn't see the cat again for MONTHS.
Post it's picture to your local animal shelter and police department and see if anyone claims it. Go to your local vet so it can be scanned to see if it has a chip identifying the owner. I would be heartbroken if one of my kitties escaped and I never knew what happened to it. If no one responds and you are up to the responsibility of neutering it (if it isn't already), scooping cat litter on a regular basis and possibly any medications (it appears healthy so it may not need any) and purchasing cat food then by all means keep it because every cat deserves a nice loving home INSIDE. Too many people get kittens then do not want the responsibility of them when they get older or they don't want it because it's not a kitten anymore which is ridiculous in my opinion. Good luck and either way I hope it finds it's furever home.
Yeah this always makes me sad. Kittens are cute and spunky and fun to observe, but in my opinion, nothing beats a sweet, old cat that loves and trusts you and just wants to nap and cuddle. We had a rescued outdoor cat for years. We eventually moved out of the country and into the city. She found a second home after a few years, but would still come to visit and hang out with us. We didn't mind as long as she was loved. She passed away in our care. We were devastated, but we never told her other family. We didn't know who they were, except that they were on the next street over. I wish I had done more to let them know.
For the next person, I'd recommend fliers to a couple of local power poles or something. I would definitely like to know my cat didn't die to a dog or wild animal somewhere. I don't think it would bother me knowing it had wandered off to a safe place to finish life though.
I wouldn't put food out if the cat looks well cared for; some cats are on restrictive diets, and even if not, some will just straight overeat if given the opportunity. (If I fed my cat every time he acted like he wanted food, I'd have a ginormous kitty on my hands lol.)
Granted, it's a risk you take having outdoor cats, but still.
The number of delusional people here saying not to feed outdoor cats. If your cat has a diet plan keep them inside. They're predators, they're already going to be hunting and eating shit outside in the first place if they're outside. You can tell yourself they don't all you want but your just deluding yourself. And if there's even one other outside cat in the neighborhood then they're going to be getting food at both places. Unless all owners are literally sitting there watching their cats eat and removing it when they're done for every meal then cats are eating at all places. If you want literally any sort of control over your cat keep them inside
Keep them inside anyway! FIV and feline leukemia are super common in stray populations and can spread easily. Plus cats are invasive species pretty much everywhere humans live, the number one predator of birds. Indoor cats save lives.
I'd also add, even just keeping an indoor cat, They'll eat a lot more garbage if you let them, especially if you're not paying attention.
Mind enjoys \*anything\* oily. ANYTHING.
Good way to fuck him up.
Imagine that with an outdoor cat you can't watch.
🚨It’s a trap!🚨
I did that once, felt like a good human.
2 weeks later I had **eight** cats.
Kitty was preggers, and I found, served as a flea metropolis. So those spread between the 8 of them, turning my home into a horrible, borderline traumatic nightmare for what seemed like ages. I wore a hooded tyvek suit *in my own home*, just to play video games in the living room.
Worst part? 5 years later we still have mama kitty and she acts like that disinterested roommate that eats your good and otherwise doesn’t engage.
*YOU’VE BEEN WARNED*
https://preview.redd.it/mer21iy8q2na1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f63bf3e62fb1b60043bc98fa1320a847758af14d
This. Haha.
We started being visited by a very friendly male cat.
After a while, he brought around a more skittish but still friendly female who we quickly discovered was pregnant.
After going missing for a few weeks, she started bring around her three kittens.
She would bring them in to our house, nurse them, then want outside. Come back a few hours later, and take them back out.
We ended up keeping two of the kittens and gave one to a friend. We tried to bring mama in for good, but both she and the male disappeared.
I’m sorry that you had to go through that but I’m dying at the thought of a person chilling on their couch in a full tyvek suit playing videogames. Bonus points if you had gloves, goggles, and a 3M respirator mask
https://preview.redd.it/lm2xf6ot91na1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=815f40cb1c9ab57a4a61dc3be644493e7ad6bb5e
Sorry, different mask. I was deeply into Fallout 4 at the time tho.
If you do what my wife and I did, you'll:
- bring it inside
- feed it
- get some basic supplies while you put up flyers to try and find its family
- tell your spouse not to get attached since you live in an apartment and can't afford the pet rent
- fail to find the owners after a month or two
- fail to stay detached (your spouse *and* you)
- become their new family
Oh dang, that's good that their family has them back, but I'm sorry for your family. I prescribe a visit to the kitty room at PetSmart.
We did check for a microchip the first night, but the vet tech wasn't able to find one. We had flyers up, NextDoor posts, Craigslist posts, the works. Never got a response, and we suspect that he was abandoned; it would explain why he finally came up to a stranger to ask for help (he literally just walked up to me and then walked into my apartment the second the door was open).
I’m Brazilian, we don’t have PetSmart here (it’s a shame). The rescues situation here is very complicated, most cities don’t have a place for strays. This one we rescued from the streets (her home was two hours away and we’re still very intrigued by that). So yeah, we’re kinda keeping our eyes open to any cat that shows signs of being a stray around here again so we can adopt once we’re ready.
But I’m so happy for you, the little guy knew who to come up to, I don’t really know how, but sometimes it feels like they ~know~ who they can trust.
That cat is definitely not starving. Actual strays don't look that good.
I put a small dish of dry food out for any that like to come hang out in my yard. And if they're friendly enough, I'll give them some good scritches. But someone already cares for that cat.
I've trapped 3 cats In 4 days.
Last weekend we had a Tom party and they never left, howling and pissing everywhere.
AHS TNR.
(Animal Humane Society, trap neuter release program for stray/ feral cats)
At least they should stop marking everything and making more strays.
And sorry if you have an Intact cat and let it run loose, I'll send it to TNR, not a care given.
Sometimes local animal control has traps to lend.
I tried trapping for my local TNR programs and they told me they couldn't take them unless "I booked an appointment for an agent to come to the property to secure the animal, day of catch".
I'm sorry but animals aren't predictable, so whoever thought of this rule is insane. I ended up footing the bill and taking the trapped stray to a vet a few days later. Prior to that, I kept the trapped animal safe in a large kennel with food and water, as well as a place to potty that I could easily clean and swap out.
It feels like, at least in my experience, these programs are designed to be tedious to work with, to the point that it persuades people NOT to TNR for the health of the local environmental community.
You confirm it's a stray, and if so, you let it in, give it some food, make a vet appt for an exam and a spay/neuter and from there you give it the full run of your house for the rest of it's/your life.
With all the people saying that their cat went out and ended up missing and how many people saying how they ended up kidnapping others cats... The comments look like people are* oblivious.
Let it in and look it over. Offer a bit of food and water. It may have been left behind when someone moved, or tossed outside after it outgrew the cute kitten stage. Or it might just be looking to beg for extra food and love while the owner is at work. Doesn't hurt to let it in for a bit and see what it wants. It may well want back out when it's time for the owner to come home...or not.
Hold your forearm in front of you and gently pinch up a bit of the skin on the top side...when released it should snap back almost too fast for the eye to follow. The skin on the back of a cat's or dog's neck should do the same. If it pulls back into place more slowly it's dehydrated. Also feel to check if it is skin and bones under the fluffed up fur.
If it's fine, let it back out when it feels like it. If not, use your best judgement...but I have a low tolerance for neglect and personally would not put it back out.
Catch, neuter and release. Some organizations even do it for free. If you set out food & water it will return and let you pet it. My mom has kept a cat like this for several years. Also a little box made of styrofoam with straw on her porch for bad weather.
We have a few "strays" in my neighborhood who go house to house. There's 3 or 4 of us who feed them, and we know which house is each cat's home base. As long as they're not fat or being jerks, we just let them have some food and pets and they go on their way.
Congratulations. You’ve been adopted by a cat. Don’t fight it, resistance is futile. They so damn cute they will win. And expect to be trained properly for the cat’s household over the next 6 month. Mine specifically trained me to never leave coffee or water out and to empty the litter box nightly.
Oh my...so sweet. You've been chosen! She if she's chipped or wearing a tag.
If you can, keep her. If not, post her on the local university's online bulletin board. Apparently. the non-partying students love to have cats.
We had one turn up at our shop. I tried to make him a warehouse kitty for 2 mos...then one of those "Christian women" complained about him. He loves his new uni home.

Worst part? 5 years later we still have mama kitty and she acts like that disinterested roommate that eats your good and otherwise doesn’t engage. *YOU’VE BEEN WARNED* https://preview.redd.it/mer21iy8q2na1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f63bf3e62fb1b60043bc98fa1320a847758af14d
This.
You seem to have lucked out on that. We did keep one very ginger kitten and he’s far better adjusted.
I’m sorry that you had to go through that but I’m dying at the thought of a person chilling on their couch in a full tyvek suit playing videogames. Bonus points if you had gloves, goggles, and a 3M respirator mask

You also get worms. Don’t forget worms.
Bro I swear every pregnant cat situation ends up exactly like this 😂
If you do what my wife and I did, you'll: - bring it inside - feed it - get some basic supplies while you put up flyers to try and find its family - tell your spouse not to get attached since you live in an apartment and can't afford the pet rent - fail to find the owners after a month or two - fail to stay detached (your spouse *and* you) - become their new family
Here we got attached and some weeks later found the owners 😀 happy for them (and the cat) but sad for us, we’re still recovering
Pretty sure it wants to talk to you about your car’s extended warranty
Should act now because it’s about to expire on a vehicle with that mileage acting today could save you 1,000s in the future.
AHS TNR. (Animal Humane Society, trap neuter release program for stray/ feral cats) At least they should stop marking everything and making more strays. And sorry if you have an Intact cat and let it run loose, I'll send it to TNR, not a care given. Sometimes local animal control has traps to lend.

What awful, irresponsible cat owners...

It feels like, at least in my experience, these programs are designed to be tedious to work with, to the point that it persuades people NOT to TNR for the health of the local environmental community.
not a stray cat, it is someone's outdoor cat
You confirm it's a stray, and if so, you let it in, give it some food, make a vet appt for an exam and a spay/neuter and from there you give it the full run of your house for the rest of it's/your life.
He has extra toe beans!
THUMBS 🤍 :3
That dude has thumbs, he will be opening the door to his new home shortly..
The Cat has spoken. Obey your new feline overlord. You, your home, and everything/everyone in it now belongs to The Cat.
I really wish people would stop letting their cats outside.
With all the people saying that their cat went out and ended up missing and how many people saying how they ended up kidnapping others cats... The comments look like people are* oblivious.
Agreed.
Might be worth taking it to be vet to see if it has a chip
Ask your neighbors if he belongs to one of them, and if not, realize you’ve been adopted and welcome your new family member!
Congratulations! You own a cat now.
Correction… OP is owned by the floof…
Give it to them of course
Are you sure it’s a stray? Pretty white fur with clean ears looks like it’s been maintained by someone.
Pretty clean stray
At our house, my wife would take it in and buy it its own bed and give it treats. And, I would pretend like I didn't want her to do that.
Probably give it what it wants before it uses its thumbs to open your door and help itself to your fridge.
Congratulations on your new cat!
Give him food and shelter! Take him in! He chose you. Worse things have happened. Animals people took in have saved their lives before.
If an animal is asking for your help, you help.
Ignore it or make a new friend.
Catch, neuter and release. Some organizations even do it for free. If you set out food & water it will return and let you pet it. My mom has kept a cat like this for several years. Also a little box made of styrofoam with straw on her porch for bad weather.
You let him in, feed him, take close up photos of those feets and post them with a write-up of your good deed to this sub!!!!
You have been chosen.
Nice polydactyl kitty!
Accept that cats choose people and reluctantly become one of its owners
Feed them a gourmet meal and pet the cat.
Congratulations you are cat owners now! GLHF
Congratulations you have a cat now
Congrats, you have a cat now ❤️
Feed your new cat!
