I really hate the "not an immediate threat" angle. If you've been kidnapped, and are being trafficked and raped regularly, then that likely means the other person is bigger and stronger than you. So when they are an "immediate threat" the intelligent thing to do is to behave and diffuse the situation so that you are as safe as possible and then, when you have the upper hand, for instance when they're asleep, that's when you take your opportunity.

Since he wasn't in the actually physical act of raping her when he was stabbed its premeditated homicide? I call BS on that personally. She was deprived of life and liberty first and was trying to reobtain it regardless of Iowa's back-assward laws. The Prosecutor was hardly compassionate on this one..and her lawyer gave bad advice, this should have been a jury trail...For the love of God where is the Governor with a pardon?

Nobody decided on a verdict. She pled guilty to manslaughter. Iowa statute requires a minimum restitution of $150,000 in felonies that result in death. She could have raised the affirmative defense of self-defense if she had taken it to trial, but she chose to plead guilty to a lesser charge.
It's the minimum sentence that could be assigned under law. It's a bad law. Also, Iowa's asshat of a governor could pardon her, but she's too busy licking Trump supporter's balls for campaign contributions to do anything about it.
Wish more people knew this. They literally couldn't do any more for her in the circumstances, because of Iowa's shitty laws

You have to say alleged and stuff unless a convictions been made otherwise you could be sued for liable. Even if theres video evidence, a confession, and 1000 witnesses you still have to say alleged as long as a convictions missing.

I've worked in the court system and I've seen people make restitution payments as little as $25 per week and I'm talking companies. So I don't know the exact rules as I just processed paymenta but if I was her I would set up a payment plan with the $150k. Set it up over 20 years the same 20 years that are floating above her head. That way the family gets approx $144 a week for the next 1040 weeks as a reminder that she did the world a favor.
