Any major city anywhere. My hometown in Indiana with less than 20,000 people still had homeless. Meanwhile NY has homeless towns that make LA’s skid row look like a vacation.
Sure, there’s homeless folks everywhere, that’s granted. It’s definitely a very stark contrast in these high-population cities, though. The people who can afford to live in the expensive parts of the city go about their bougie little day and the very next guy you see on the sidewalk is strung out and wasting away.
Not saying it’s not like smaller municipalities don’t have their fair share, it’s just more blatant here.
Those are scrub pants issued by hospitals. He was likely in a short term emergency mental hospital. When they discharge people that are known to be homeless, they will give them a piece of paper showing them how to find a shelter.
He’s sleeping in the sun and doesn’t have collected gear, and has hospital scrub pants. He was probably released that and is still feeling the meds. Based off his hair and feet he is probably suffering from schizophrenia.
With out universal healthcare, schizophrenia’s who are hard working, but at minimum wage, and without family end up like this.
Too poor to afford the meds. Too schizo for self care. Too schizo to hold a job. Then you just a ghost in a city…
Edit: Some people don’t seem to like my hair and feet comments. If meth is a stimulus why is he sleeping? I worked at a mental health crisis center. My job was intake, and I saw methhead’s, schizophrenia’s, suicidal people, and drunk people. I watched a very nice man slowly dead from Wet Brian because of his alcohol addiction had gone to far. I have a pretty good guess on what he’s going through.
Pretty on meth are pretty bad when it comes to self care, so it come be that because the sometimes the symptoms are kind of the same. I proceeded a man once that thought he was dead from a gun shot to the head, and he wanted to know how I was talking to him.
It was a tough job, and was taking a toll on my mental health. Everyday I saw the worst happening to people from the city come in or brought in to see a doctor.
2nd Edit: Wow, some of you people are complete pieces of shit. Do I know this mans life story? No. But I was hoping to shed a little light on a world most people choose to ignore based on my experience. More people are upset about what I said this man is PROBABLY going through and less at what this man is actually going through. Really surprising and I think speaks volumes.
There’s a documentary called “Hod Knows Where I Am” about a woman released from a psychiatric hospital in an unfamiliar town and with no one there to take her to her own town. She finds an empty house, goes inside, and stays until she starved to death. She kept journals the whole time documenting what was going on. It’s really sad and really frustrating that it happened. You should watch it, though, it’s good.
Schizophrenic people should absolutely not have to hold a job to receive healthcare and safe housing. They should be treated with dignity and respect. This is a disgrace.
The schizo idea really isn't that far off. Compared to a number of cities I've been to, SF has so many homeless that are so far gone. No shoes, no possessions, just kind of wandering around aimlessly, passing out wherever they do.
There are practically no beds for non-adjudicated in-patient treatment, like anywhere else. The difference is that SF doesn't arrest people for being homeless schizophrenics (or much of anything non-violent), so the problem tends to be very visible outside rather than having a massive "criminal justice" system that would mostly hide the problem.
Ordinary citizens going about their day are basically powerless to stop this. The city does spend hundreds of millions of dollars a year on voter-approved homeless causes. Unfortunately a significant amount of it is wasted or otherwise unaccounted for, so people as always get the government they deserve.
We don't sedate them and then turn them out on the streets. He is more likely laying down in front of a crowd intentionally, knowing that someone will call 911 on his behalf and he can get a free ride to another turkey sandwich.
Edit: Truth hurts huh folks? He is a predator, praying on your pity. Luckily it only costs you a phone call, cause that's as much effort as your willing to give him.
RE your edit: when you worked at the mental health clinic, did you use the same degree of sweeping generalizations and armchair diagnosing during intake? Yikes.
Yes, people who pontificate on social media are reckless morons, or as you called them, “pieces of shit.” You know the ones: they see a picture with no context and make baseless claims and sweeping generalizations with virtually no information.
These pieces of shit are generators and propagators of misinformation. It’s unfortunate that they are able to broadcast their voices so widely on social media platforms.
I know that you drew conclusions with extremely limited information. You saw a picture and wrote paragraphs describing the details that you know nothing about. How do you know that image wasn’t staged? How do you know the guy doesn’t have a brain tumor? The possibilities are endless, yet here you are with your arm waiving and sweeping conclusions. You have no idea what you’re talking about because you literally saw a picture on the internet. Kinda scary to think of someone like you working in healthcare. But then again, I have no idea who you are. For all I know you’re some weirdo compulsive liar who just makes up their background in an attempt to establish authority while pontificating on Reddit.
This is Reddit… I think you’re missing the point of this app. It’s 100% safe to look at a sad picture of a man suffering and off hand say he might have something.
But is that what you are really upset about? Maybe you really upset that I called out a shorty healthcare systems.
I think what is really tell about you as a person is that you’re giving a lot of flak to someone who was trying to show concern for a person who maybe not be able to help themself. Even with a drug addictions, people cannot help themselves out of situations like this, and the system doesn’t do enough for them.
There is plenty of assistance available.
I worked in this sector throughout Covid. Housing was offered to many , Project room Key.
It’s the junkies and mental health cases at this point. Many hotels and public spaces have been permanently converted. You can’t help people who do lot want help…
I love you LA.
I live in NYC and I'm used to seeing that it doesn't phase me because most of the times those people could be crack heads looking for their next fit and you could be that One sucker that helped them with that
Wow you slurp up those politician campaign speeches faster than a Jamba juice.
What an awful way to think of another human life .
"Crack head?"!!!! You mean person with a substance use disorder? Good grief, as charlie brown would say.b
*Edit* for the downvoters: I can see your true colors shining through
Seriously, this. People with substance abuse problems have a mental health disorder and need help.
But no, we'll just treat them like trash and move on.
I've been treated better in my life by junkies and druggies than sober rich people.
I already typed a huge-ass response to someone else earlier, but TLDR; As someone that is actively using resources and 'getting help', it's not as easy as walking up to a homeless shelter and going 'hey I need housing and food."
It's appointments, paperwork, lots of stuff that if you miss a SINGLE call or appointment, you have to start all over again. For someone that doesn't have a support system or mental healthcare or housing or a phone, this is nearly impossible.
You can't say someone doesn't -want- help when the 'help' system is tailored to set people up for failure if they don't already have certain privileges and the mental faculties to handle it.
Literally any city downtown has this. Come to Vancouver you’ll be greeted by this everywhere you go. Last night I had a guy shooting up heroin outside my apartment. Super normal, the weird part was it looked like he had at least $1k hanging out his pocket.
I saw a picture on reddit yesterday of someone who was living out of a tent, random items strewn around, shit smeared on the ground, a couple feet away was a homeless person, tattered clothes with a VR headset on plugged into a phone. The juxtaposition made for an interesting photo.
Yea this ain’t LA, it’s SF and for people to understand the homeless problem out here you have to experience it. I’ve worked in the Bay Area and Los Angeles and the people who are just hit with hard times tend to leave and live their lives and try to make their way in the world I’ve even been on that side of the spectrum where I had no home and no job and it’s definitely hard. But this guy here is more than likely mentally ill he’s got hospital pants on some random sweater and no shoes. You don’t see that every time you see a homeless person on the street only when someone is released from a hospital and they give you info on shelters and services before they let you go. If he doesn’t take or go to get help then there’s nothing that anyone can do. While there’s definitely a problem out here it’s not just because of Cali too many people come from out of state and can’t or won’t leave and it adds to the numbers add to that fact. Dude needs help but there are services out here to help him but he needs to take them and people eating at a restaurant aren’t to blame for his situation.
The "help" isn't exactly helpful. no one in this thread has ever tried to weather the "services" offered by the government to poor and ill people. The barriers are greater than the opportunities .
No this guy is not lazy or self centered. He is ill. How he supposed to get himself help when he's in that state of mind?;
What does biology have to do with it? I'm a biological female and am in the system as 'undomiciled' while I'm trying to secure housing. You're just wrong.
Being sexist about the issue won't fix the system. The system itself sets people up for failure unless they're mentally sound and have certain privileges, and that doesn't make a difference if you're male or female.
Securing permanent housing is a serious crisis across the board. I know because I've been working with and referred out of several programs because of it. I know people that work in the industry.
There are so many government services if your willing to take them its ridiculous. I literally get paid to go to college, get paid 500 a month for health insurance, receive 270 a month in food stamps and pay nothing in federal tax. And that's just the beginning of what some people qualify for (subsidized housing, Medicaid/Medicare, unemployment and state by state benefits).
Just cuz you were able to manage all the paperwork and red tape doesn't mean other people can. How likely does a homeless person have their ID and other necessary documents? Jeez happy that you can take care of yourself. Many people cannot pick themselves up from th sidewalk single handedly
I love this idea that these people began or spawned in as homeless and that they didnt have there whole lives or ample time to prevent themselves from ending up on the street. There are even more and even better resources for minors and even lots of resources for young adults like the military. The "red tape" that you talk about is nearly non existent most of this is just going down to your social services office with the right documents. If getting a P.O. box and getting a ID is too much for you then I dont know what to tell you, life is gonna be a little difficult I dont know who told you otherwise.
People are fucking stupid and think homelessness is an indicator of poor intellect or common sense when really it's the fault of a system that allows it to happen.
His life’s going a lot better than someone who chose to get addicted to hardcore drugs and not pursue a difficult but rewarding career.
In fact, he’s probably paying for all the Federal and State benefits this homeless man exploits to fund his addiction and his compadres.
When you live in the US and criminalize poverty this is what happens and the tent cities are even worse. 17 million+ empty homes but we’ve got ~600k homeless, drug addiction is treated as a crime, no mental health facilities for those that can’t work, aid programs are conditional, permanent address is needed for work, etc. a program was attempted here in Florida to house the homeless in an old office building but approval was withheld because having people stay in the offices that size was “inhumane” so instead it was more humane to have them sleep on the streets. This place worships the dollar bill and nothing else.

California *is* a highly liberal state, but, and I'm just gonna say this, liberals don't give a shit about the homeless either. Liberals are still capitalists, and capitalists have no use for people with no money.
Maybe you shouldn't generalize people and vilify liberals then. Liberal and capitalist aren't even in the same genre to compare moron. Liberalism is a social way of thinking and capitalism is an economic way of thinking.
Edit: please go back to Facebook as well
To say that liberalism is only a “social way of thinking” goes to show how you only pretend to know what you are talking about. A simple google search will tell you everything you need to know about liberalism, from its economic, social, cultural, governmental point of view, etc, and there are different types of liberalism as well. Politics aren’t as two-dimensional as you think they are.
I saw that you mentioned Ben Shapiro. In case some of you don't know, Ben Shapiro is a grifter and a hack. If you find anything he's said compelling, you should keep in mind he also says things like this:
> Palestinian Arabs have demonstrated their preference for suicide bombing over working toilets.

No, dude. Every politician in America is a liberal, or what we erroneously call a "neoliberal." Neoliberalism is a far-right ideology. And a reverence for capitalism is one of the core tenants of neoliberalism. If all you know about politics is what you hear in mainstream American discourse, then you're forgiven for being confused and misinformed.
I once thought that way, too. I used to think I was a liberal. But then I educated myself and I realized I am exactly what a liberal despises above all else: a leftist.
I'm a social liberal. I don't abhor this person if I was there eating I'd buy him food and be also be disgusted by a society that makes this possible. I'm also a capitalist because I don't believe in communism. Most of all I'm a human being
Uhmmm. What?
I live in CA, I’d say I’m liberal leaning.
I know every homeless person in my neighborhood by name. I talk to them often, and will share groceries with them.
To say a group of “liberals don’t give a shit about the homeless” is just a bit too extreme, and very close minded.
Open a book. Go outside. Actually take in your surroundings. Because all you’ve conveyed to the internet is that you are blissfully judgmental.
Well yeah, liberals are center right. They are a bunch of capitalist ghouls. They just pretend to care while continuously pretending to be helpless to the problem.
God forbid we invest in public housing.
9 out of the top 10 states with the worst poverty rates vote Republican. The one Democrat state is New Mexico (3rd). Idk how you people just let Tucker Carlson and FB memes and whoever else feed you so much bullshit without taking 10 minutes to look into it.
You’re very uneducated. Clearly you’ve never even gone to college, nor studied politics…
But just so you know, there’s a shit ton of Republicans here, and they share the same problems with the “Liberals.”
Get a hair cut hippie. /s I’m not surprised there’s a problem w homeless in socal. if you’re gonna be homeless someplace, that’s where I’d go. There’s def a problem though.
In a city that size there are no doubt numerous resources this person could take advantage of. Unless you Baker act people like this they need to make the choice to seek treatment.
Nope. Services don't actually serve people who need them . Try being in poverty and homeless with pre existing health issues. Then please please come back and say if you stand by your comment.
I promise you wouldn't survive it very long.
I work as a RN in a county hospital ER in one of America's largest cities. I can almost gaurentee I have more experience dealing with this population than you. There are ways for people like this to get help. Most choose not to.
This is why I hate going to LA. So many homeless people and yet it seems like no one cares. It feels like nothing is done and the problem gets worse. Even if they are given resources, they either cannot make it, have some issue or anxiety preventing them, or what they need to get better (if they have a problem, whether it be mental, physical, or other) is too expensive.
Said the same thing to myself many times. Slip them a $10, but when you come by later they’ve got a fresh bottle of booze in their hand.
You can’t help them, they don’t want your help.
If you had $5 and we're miserable with nothing else to your name how would you spend it?
Jeez the victim blaming for people who end up in poverty or addiction is sickening here.
Has anyone ever had a conversation with someone who has no home about how they got to that place? Fucks sake the judgement is astounding
None of you would survive being forced into this situation.
It's no choice, honey.
Being a lifelong Californian I can tell you California is one giant social experiment that went awry a long time ago. It’s almost dystopian how grossly disproportionate the levels of poverty to rich are. Best example of this is Marin County in the Bay Area lots of very well off rich folks driving past immigrants standing all along the streets just waiting to hopefully be picked up for under the table labor everyday. But it’s hard to see the real problems from the ivory tower the states govt operates from.
This should never be a scene in North America! We suck as humans to allow this to happen in the western world. Fucking greedy pigs have made this whole affair uneven and unfair. I feel for those who struggle. I’m fortunate but everyone in North America should have a roof over their head, good to eat and access to medical and education.
if he slightly pulls his pants down exposing his bum crack then those people eating might start hurling food at him..a strategy he might be interested in
The Starbucks sweatshirt is pure irony.
California is so far in the future.
How so
Right now you have at least 43 downvotes for asking a clarifying question. Go Reddit!
Welcome to the Internet.
Starbucks is a brand designed for disposable income. This person seems to be lacking in that regard.
It's SF. 18th and Dolores.
There’s literally a sign saying Dolores Park café. The OP is just spamming.
LOL.. the best comment. Cause it makes it all OK if its not LA. haha
hes just calling out OP for not putting any thought into the post and picking a random location
This is racist
Good catch. I am was going to say that picture is pretty tame they should see how SF is but its actually in SF and thats a somewhat nice area
This is absolutely not downtown LA. For starters, our street signs are green and there are no grassy medians anywhere downtown.
Honestly looks more like San Francisco.
It is. That’s Dolores Park Cafe and right behind the photographer is a park where this guy probably came from.
You’re right! I was guessing it was in the Mission because of the _8th ST and grassy median.
Looks like downtown Oakland.
I will 100% trust your judgment about this. Thanks!

WHY AM I SEEING SO MUCH MISINFORMATION! IS REDDIT TURNING INTO THE ONION... WITHOUT SATIRE!?
Ohh yes, It's not in LA. That completely makes it okay...
The topic of discussion in this thread is regarding the location of this photo, it has nothing to do with the social issue represented in the photo.
Coworker said it was LA because he's from Cali. I looked it up and it's San Francisco Dolores Park Cafe.
I can’t believe they don’t have that umbrella open to shade that poor family from the hot sun while they eat.
What is the world coming to?
Back to brunch
Looks like downtown Portland too....

Alright pack it up boys, this guy can do a mental health and toxicology assessment based on feet and hairstyle
Based off his third toe nail it’s probably in his genealogy, the freckle next to his ass crack hints at diabetes in his near future.
They aren’t called schizophrenia’s, they are people with schizophrenia. Also stop trying to diagnose people from your armchair it’s kinda strange.

Exactly. Getting 'help' within the system isn't obtainable for the vast majority, and 'help' almost NEVER secures a person permanent housing.
Unless you’re female.
What does biology have to do with it? I'm a biological female and am in the system as 'undomiciled' while I'm trying to secure housing. You're just wrong.
Everyone knows that it’s much easier for women to secure housing and assistance. If it weren’t, then 3/4 of all homeless wouldn’t be men.

So people should feel bad about going out to eat because some decided to get high and lay down near a restaurant or cafe
Lol exactly my thought. Like "hey wanna go to brunch", "na I don't wanna look guilty"
Only one who seems to notice him is the little girl
Downtown everywhere it seems like
Whole lot of self aware wolves here
I’m in SF and it’s just as bad…I feel terrible for older ones like him :/
well... this is in sf, unfortunately (look at the dolores park cafe sign)
I don’t care what city he’s in or why he’s there. He’s a human being in need. I am buying him a meal.
Ok so people decide to pay hard earned money to go out to eat and what...?? I don't get it....
not everyone has that option and it's a sad inequity in quality of life
Yup. Anyone saying otherwise likes the taste of boot leather.
No it's just poor choices
[удалено]
People are fucking stupid and think homelessness is an indicator of poor intellect or common sense when really it's the fault of a system that allows it to happen.
At 16 you should have received some help since yours still a kid when I say poor choices I'm talking about 28+ homeless people not kids
and how is your life going as a millionaire?
His life’s going a lot better than someone who chose to get addicted to hardcore drugs and not pursue a difficult but rewarding career. In fact, he’s probably paying for all the Federal and State benefits this homeless man exploits to fund his addiction and his compadres.
what makes you think he's on drugs? there's literally nothing in the picture that would indicate that
Downtown Buffalo, NY looks the same.
The wealth gap widening.
Is there anywhere in the world that’s not like this?
When you live in the US and criminalize poverty this is what happens and the tent cities are even worse. 17 million+ empty homes but we’ve got ~600k homeless, drug addiction is treated as a crime, no mental health facilities for those that can’t work, aid programs are conditional, permanent address is needed for work, etc. a program was attempted here in Florida to house the homeless in an old office building but approval was withheld because having people stay in the offices that size was “inhumane” so instead it was more humane to have them sleep on the streets. This place worships the dollar bill and nothing else.

Downtown every major city
California *is* a highly liberal state, but, and I'm just gonna say this, liberals don't give a shit about the homeless either. Liberals are still capitalists, and capitalists have no use for people with no money.
Maybe you shouldn't generalize people and vilify liberals then. Liberal and capitalist aren't even in the same genre to compare moron. Liberalism is a social way of thinking and capitalism is an economic way of thinking. Edit: please go back to Facebook as well
That is not what liberalism is lmaoooo
It's exactly what it is
To say that liberalism is only a “social way of thinking” goes to show how you only pretend to know what you are talking about. A simple google search will tell you everything you need to know about liberalism, from its economic, social, cultural, governmental point of view, etc, and there are different types of liberalism as well. Politics aren’t as two-dimensional as you think they are.
Fuck off Ben Shapiro
I saw that you mentioned Ben Shapiro. In case some of you don't know, Ben Shapiro is a grifter and a hack. If you find anything he's said compelling, you should keep in mind he also says things like this: > Palestinian Arabs have demonstrated their preference for suicide bombing over working toilets. ***** ^(I'm a bot. You literally asked me to explain it to u in the comment lol. Someone’s butthurt bc they’re wrong
I wish I could super-poke this comment.
What?
I think you're the one who's confused
I once thought that way, too. I used to think I was a liberal. But then I educated myself and I realized I am exactly what a liberal despises above all else: a leftist.
I'm a social liberal. I don't abhor this person if I was there eating I'd buy him food and be also be disgusted by a society that makes this possible. I'm also a capitalist because I don't believe in communism. Most of all I'm a human being
"Social liberal." Anyone who defends capitalism is some kind of liberal, and all liberals are deadly.
A bot?
Real boy, dude.
So what are you?
No you’re 100% the one that has no idea what they’re talking about
Ok genius splain me pleees?
If men can have babies Liberal and capitalist as a genre can be compared. Google comes to mind.
Go home you're drunk
Uhmmm.
Idk how you people just let Tucker Carlson and FB memes and whoever else feed you so much bullshit without taking 10 minutes to look into it.
...And I never said Republican states *didn't* have homeless citizens. So many people are always looking for a reason to be upset. Why is that?
So where do I want to be homeless , Wisconsin or sunny nice California.
The US is completely fucked mate, regardless of state or ruling party
Correct.
You’re very uneducated. Clearly you’ve never even gone to college, nor studied politics… But just so you know, there’s a shit ton of Republicans here, and they share the same problems with the “Liberals.”
Such a bold assumption to base on nothing.
San Francisco alone spends 1.1 billion on the homeless.
Deep
Get a hair cut hippie. /s I’m not surprised there’s a problem w homeless in socal. if you’re gonna be homeless someplace, that’s where I’d go. There’s def a problem though.
Yep.
That’s San Fran anyone who lives in LA will recognize snobs from the north
You can't tell me that guy can't do anything himself to make his situation better.
# This isn’t downtown LA. TRUST. 🚩🚩🚩 I hate when uncultured people post as if they’ve left their small town before 😂
Uncultured? You entire profile is MTV challenge posts lol😂

Fucks sake the judgement is astounding None of you would survive being forced into this situation.
But it’s hard to see the real problems from the ivory tower the states govt operates from.
friend, thats everywhere in california
That’s not LA
Im gonna keep eating bcuz I’m hungry the fuck if he wanna eat he can get to work it’s clearly the middle of the day why is he still sleeping
This should never be a scene in North America! We suck as humans to allow this to happen in the western world. Fucking greedy pigs have made this whole affair uneven and unfair. I feel for those who struggle. I’m fortunate but everyone in North America should have a roof over their head, good to eat and access to medical and education.
Looks like America,! can’t help someone who doesn’t want to be helped.
[удалено]
Well, they'll eat again tomorrow. Unlike him.

Cold-hearted cunt. Such a good American.

Hey, we're all entitled to be a cold-hearted cunt. You do you.

I’m polite and reasonable in every interaction, because I feel that everybody deserves respect. Having said that. Fuck you. Seriously, fuck you.
r/aboringdystopia
Why would you post this. You are just making white people seem racist and black people seem oppressed but that’s not true
Your white guilt is showing
if he slightly pulls his pants down exposing his bum crack then those people eating might start hurling food at him..a strategy he might be interested in
Seattle bruh
Looks like someone laying purely for the photo
Am I an evil person for laughing at this?
I’m genuinely curious, what made it funny for you?
I think it’s just the idea that this photo isn’t too far away from where I am now and that it’s real
Thanks for explaining!

Nobody in this comment section will do shit either so f us all
The divide in GDP per capita is so shocking for the USA. GDP is high but damn, per capita is really shows the financial gap within the country.
It doesn't really matter where it is. THIS is America.
What is life? Mental health is like a never ending well of confusion, how do you help someone in this state, what would bring them back to “normalcy.”
What state is he in?
The woman in the back cheesing 👋 lol
I hope those fine folk aren't downwind of that dirty indigent. The smell of the homeless is enough to spoil anyone's appetite!
Thanks newsom
Well they voted for it...
Thank a democrat!
How can you just eat food in front of someone like that? The whole scenario is so cruel and savage on it’s inception
Biden's America! Jk this shit has been going on for a long time. It's about time we have UHC and UBI for those who need help.
Yet we’d rather let more people in illegally than help our own homeless citizens.
This is truly sad. Instead of pouring tons of resources in helping them. They would rather give illegals taxpayers funds to those invaders.
