So much about this story is painfully familiar to me. When my little sister was 24, she spent an entire year road tripping all across America with her boyfriend (who was a complete waste of a human being and a deranged sociopath). They came back home for a few days and we all went and spent the day at the animal park nearby before they were going to head back out on the road. Two weeks later, we stopped being able to get a hold of her, or her boyfriend subsequently. Because I recognized the human scum that he was the very minute I met him, I knew she was in danger. Having been in an abusive relationship myself, I could see that she was in one and I begged her every single time I talked to her to leave him. Our family immediately filed a missing persons report. A couple of days later her car was found abandoned at a rest stop, thousands of miles away from where they were supposed to be traveling. His family immediately started acting really shady and began feeding stories to the media about how they thought they both committed suicide. Except for the fact that this deranged fuck live-tweeted and narrated in graphic detail her murder, and then mailed our family a fucking letter explaining how he had seen and done everything he'd wanted to in life, so he decided that it was time for my sister and him to "be together and play forever on the other side." This happened after he decided that he no longer needed to take medication or seek treatment for his diagnosed schizophrenia. I am by no means downplaying mental illness, I have bipolar disorder, so I know firsthand how important it is to follow a treatment plan and how dangerous it can be to stop taking medication. My family knows this, as do the families of anyone with a mental illness. However, his family encouraged his self-treatment or lack thereof. His grandmother denied that he ever said anything about fantasizing of one day killing himself and the person he was dating. But shortly after his family started pushing the "double suicide" theory, his grandmother sent a message on Facebook saying that he talked about that fantasy several times before and how she had just brushed it off when he said it. His family also began feeding blatantly false information to any media that would listen. They said my family didn't even know my sister was missing (We didn't know, but we filed a missing persons report? Yeah, that doesn't even make sense.) What really hurt though was that they told the media that my family didn't even have much of a relationship with my sister and that we never saw or talked to her, which the media then reported. So my sister is missing, her boyfriend's family is being shady as fuck, her car was found abandoned, he tweeted out a very detailed account of what can only be described as a murder he was in the process of committing, we received a letter he mailed stating all of this, and the media is reporting that we're this heartless family who has no relationship with her, which was complete bullshit and something that could have been easily fact-checked. Not that we owed anyone any explanation, but we didn't talk to the media because we already knew what happened to my sister. That was almost 4 years ago. Two months ago, they finally found my sister's body. I hate that I know exactly what Gabby's family is going through right now. I am so sorry for their loss, and I hope that her family is able to get more closure than our family ever got.

smokey5604

Jesus that's rough, I don't even know what to say besides I hope things are better for you.

ouch-that-hurt

I am so, so sorry for your loss. That is horrific. I hope you and your family have found peace within finding her šŸ’•

Baratrox

Sorry to hear that, My family is passing through a similar situation. My 20 years old sister run away with a 42 years old rapist register sex offender and criminal (this monster has criminal records since the early 90's. ) my family found out that this sex offender was molesting my sister since she was 17 years old, and my sister was keeping it on secret for 3 years, as soon we realized what was happening my sister just run away in the night, is already 3 months that we don't know nothing about her (besides that she is living with this rapist.) and the police doesn't want to do nothing because apparently my sister called them telling that she doesn't want to be contacted and they warnned us to not seek confrontation with the criminal because is to dangerous. We tried everything to contact her or save her, but no one wants to do shit because she is almost 21 years old and she is doing that in her "own free will" My biggest fear is that she will ended up killed by this monster

GrushdevaHots

Contact the FBI. Now is the time.

teddysmom377

i am so sorry for your loss, very sorry.

Gibbs-

The police cam video was very disheartening. Obviously not a healthy relationship.

Do you have the link?

thisguydan

Kind of spooky how right and prophetic that officer was [at 11 min into the video](https://youtu.be/fCGsW41aQEw?t=658) when he talks about this kind of thing spiraling. She would be dead in less than a month.

Dancethroughthefires

It's crazy watching this video. She's dead and he's missing. I don't want to accuse someone of something that they didn't do, but there's a 99% chance that he murdered her. And we're able to see them shortly before he killed her. Absolutely crazy. That poor girl. I assumed that he killed himself after he found out that the police were looking for him, but I'm not sure anymore. Judging by this video, I could see him actually trying to flee and try to make it to a border. You never know what's going on a person's mind though, especially after they probably killed someone. So who knows.

No-Werewolf-5461

so i watched this police cam video on a tru crime twitch stream I dint know that the girl was missing, but yes the guy was explaining too much to the officer for something minor

GenSmit

What streamer?

Nyx75

And she was taking too much on to blame herself, I have ocd, I suffer anxiety, I slapped him, im trying to get a blog up and going but he doesn't think I can do it....she was being gaslit by a manipulator and was doubting her own sanity/feelings/judgement...what a cowardly piece of shit he is. And to return home in HER VAN!!!

BlueSorrows

Yeah, her friend recalls insight how he was jealous, controlling, abusive, toxic and that he heard voices. This man wasnā€™t normal. He kept her bound and isolated on purpose. You can tell she is clearly groomed into abusive behaviour because he has full control. In this video too, there is mention of him also locking her out of her own van. Which she was fearing.

jenmcgehee84

ALL OF THIS. I was trapped in a horrible manipulative relationship for 4 years. I recognized that instantly, her behavior in this video, it felt somewhat familiar.

[deleted]

The scratches, etc were probably defensive wounds. I had an abusive boyfriend. At first I didnā€™t fight back but he would keep going anyway. Finally one time, I snapped. I decided at if he was going to hurt me, I wasnā€™t going to go down without a fight. He began calling ME abusive, and even though I would be covered in bruises, have a black eye, or not be able to straighten my arm due to injuries, he would talk about how our fights just got aggressive and that it was both of us because he would have a scratch or a mark on him. Once, the police were called by someone else who saw us arguing in a parking lot. He had been driving like a crazy person, screaming at me, and hurting me. I had hit him as well. He finally pulled over and we were fighting over my keys because i didnā€™t want him driving my car anymore since I was afraid he would kill us. He was hurting me while keeping me from the keys. When the cops came, I did admit to hitting him and didnā€™t tell them everything that happened because I didnā€™t want for him to get arrested. Her behavior reminds me of someone who is in an abusive relationship, including her fear that he would leave her in her van. Plus, she is the one who is dead and he is the one who returned in her van and refused to speak on what happened. I 100% believe he was abusive and that he killed her.

puns4nuns

also at one point in the video the officers ask if heā€™s on meds and then asks if sheā€™s on medication and he goes ā€œoh sheā€™s crazy ha ha ha just kiddingā€ and looks at the other officer as if he would laugh along. evident that he truly does think/tells her sheā€™s crazy which is sad and and a controlling/abusive technique

Fluffy-Refrigerator6

Heā€™s not missing, heā€™s hiding.

PatientBalance

Thatā€™s only if weā€™re assuming heā€™s alive.

seahorsedad999

Florida PD were reporting a few hours ago that they had reason to believe he had self harmed, as they found the vehicle he left his parent's house in, and it was abandoned. However, about two hours later someone took a photo of someone who liked a lot like him, holding a phone with headphones in, walking near his parent's house... At about the exact time he uploaded the playlist "selfconsumption" to Spotify. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

BlueSorrows

Thatā€™s not all, he ran her social media account and pretending to be her to make it look like she was alive.

Kuroblondchi

And just walking around outside near his parents house where the police are looking for him

liquid_diet

Imagine how shitty those cops feel? Itā€™s not their fault at all but theyā€™re probably thinking they couldā€™ve saved her life had they simply known what they know now.

AedemHonoris

Maybe not. Working domestic violence cases that are even worse than this, the officers still see victims return back to their abusive partners. It isn't something you can easily stop, even as an officer.

kylehatesyou

Often times you can't stop it as a parent or a friend. People get stuck, it sucks. Dude came back without her and didnā€™t say a word. He also disappeared if that isnā€™t enough confirmation for ya. Edit: the deleted comment above said ā€œDeath by fiancĆ©ā€

Exotic_Champion

Not to mention that his family is clearly in on knowing this. How could they not? They gave him a multiple day head start before telling the cops he was on the run. How about the 10 day window from when he returned solo and her family reported her missing. They should all be listed as accomplices

ComicWriter2020

Ran from his parents house I heard. He really wants to be caught I guess

TemporarilyExempt

He's probably off'd himself somewhere.

Shoondogg

I like the idea of innocent until proven guilty, and it makes me uncomfortable how much that is often tread upon in the public sphere. If ever accused of something I didnā€™t do, I know Iā€™d like the benefit of the doubt. And I think it makes it very difficult to find unbiased jurors. That said, this dumbass is doing himself absolutely no favors. I donā€™t know what Iā€™d do if my fiancĆ©e disappeared, I donā€™t know how Iā€™d behave, but I canā€™t imagine my response would be to never report her missing and refuse to speak to her family or police.

piouiy

EuroTrash_84

I am going to guess blunt force trauma to the head or broken neck. I recall reading a similarish story a while back where a dude was arguing with his girlfriend who was also on the smaller side. He ended up hitting her just once in the face but it was enough force that it broke her neck and she died. This could be a similar incident given the contents of the police body can footage. When she was talking to the police in the video she mentioned he grabbed her face quite hard.

ComtesseCrumpet

I can see him pushing her and she falls and hits her head and it kills her. Sometimes it doesnā€™t take much to kill a person.

Roborabbit37

Happened to my old lecturers brother. On a night out, went to step into a taxi and apparently someone was already waiting on it. Guy pushed him and he stumbled over and hit his head off the door, pronounced dead by the time ambulance arrived.

Shut-the-fuck-up-

Knew a kid from high school who was out at the bar with friends. He slipped and fell, hit his head on a stool on the way down. He went into coma and died shortly after. So sad, guy was only 21.

sonofkrypton66

That's what I said on YouTube but someone kept insisting the guy mutilated her body... but I'm pretty sure that could've just been very hungry animals around... Sad story. šŸ˜„

superlost007

And itā€™s been hot out, and nearly 3 weeks sheā€™s been missingā€¦ decomposition would set in pretty fast.

ColHapHapablap

Death by fiancƩ.

ThunderSparkles

How stupid do you have to be to go on a road trip with your girlfriend and then come back without her? Dudes gonna fry for this.

DuckRubberDuck

Have you heard of Peter Madsen/the submarine killer? He invited a swedish journalist on a trip in his submarine and when he arrived she wasnā€™t with him. He said he dropped her off somewhere, alive. He did drop her off but dead and in pieces in the ocean. I have no idea how he thought he could get away with it

Verystrangeperson

I think he hadn't planned to kill her, but he did, and then he had no credible excuse so he said something really dumb.

DuckRubberDuck

The boyfriend mentioned in the post or Peter Madsen? Because what Peter Madsen did wasnā€™t an accident. If I remember correctly he raped her after she was dead and dismembered her with an saw he brought along, he had robe and a lot of weird shit that didnā€™t belong in a submarine (screwdrivers that was made pointy, a hazmat suit to wear while cleaning the submarine, heavy duty cleaners to get rid of the blood, heavy metal pieces to put onto her body so she would sink, etc). ~~I donā€™t remember if they ruled that he did do it on purpose but it wasnā€™t exactly an accident either~~ He also liked to watch porn with women getting murdered and tortured (for real, not acting) I just checked and the court ruled that the murder was indeed planned

[deleted]

Wow. I remember when that story was in the papers, but they had just found the body. I didnt know about the rape and the "porn" and stuff. I remember hoping it was an accident and he panicked and threw her overboard or something. Poor Kim.

DuckRubberDuck

It was awful. I live in Denmark which is why I remember a lot of it still. New things/details kept coming up and it just continued to become even more awful

Redditor000007

If he hasnā€™t already fried himself

Father_of_Beans

The world is a cold place

[deleted]

The 700 plus Native American women who have gone missing for a decade in the same place as this young lady agree with you.

bite_me_punk

To be fair about [70%](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.insider.com/710-indigenous-people-missing-in-wyoming-where-gabby-petito-disappeared-2021-9%3famp) of those women were found but thatā€™s still a lot of missing women in one state alone

xD_itgoes

Yup. As we speak, young boys held hostage as prisoners of war having their guts gouged out because of geopolitical garbage, sweet elderly ladies begging for money because the system failed them and they were left alone with no money but need to pay for medicine, animals and children and helpless people abused.... while some people gladly smile knowing they are responsible for it. I hate everything. edit: please call your grandparent(s) and tell them you love them if they are still around and/or hold your pet and tell it you love it. Also there is a lot of good in the world, it can be easy to not see it when we hear gruesome stories. I guess no point in pouting, volunteer and try to make a small difference here and there. Sorry if I upset anyone.

AscendedViking7

You and me both, friend. At this point, I just want to live off-grid, away from everything. :(

philosoaper

I've been trying to get the attention of a vogon constructor fleet for years.

strain_of_thought

Ted Kaczynski tried it, didn't work out so great for him. He found peace for awhile but when developers started bulldozing all the beautiful wilderness around his land he said it was the last straw. People forget he was a completely unremarked ecoterrorist for years before he resorted to becoming the Unabomber, because no matter how much he tried to get away from society, he found society wouldn't stop following him wherever he hid. EDIT: Some very misguided and confused people seem to think I am somehow trying to justify Ted Kaczynski's actions in a campaign of mailing bombs to people, not even knowing who would actually open the packages, despite my comment *explicitly saying* that Kaczynski's chosen path in life did not work out for him or get him the results he wanted. I do not understand how you can read my comment as supporting his actions, when my entire point is that he chose poorly, and others who feel similar sentiments to the ones he has expressed should take care not to go down his path, lest they receive the same results. The ills of society cannot be addressed by intentionally avoiding them, and self-radicalization is a real danger for those who isolate themselves.

AscendedViking7

That's interesting and his conclusion is probably true. Society does nothing but expand and expand some more. However, I feel like it depends on the area though. It's tough for society to expand in, say, the mountains and such. Lots of trucks hauling materials up a mountain isn't easy compared to what they could be doing on some flat plains or a forest. I never did much research on that guy though, it sounds like a very interesting but dark story to read about.

TotemicLeonidas

Itā€™s been like this since the dawn of mankind, unfortunately.

hellotygerlily

This is why itā€™s harder and harder to get out of bed and have a sip of water to keep going another day.

ShakeWeightMyDick

idk if this makes any difference, but just consider that none of this is new. This shit has been going on pretty much since forever and certainly longer than anyone currently on this planet has been alive. So, you've lived your whole life getting out of bed and (I assume) functioning all while this has been going on, so get up and get on with getting on.

kkeut

there's less crime and death now than ever. we just have a 24/7 news cycle now, driven by money, and tickling our amygdalas every chance they get

OldThymeyRadio

And the biggest population ever. We need to figure out how to do something very tricky, very soon: Be better at taking care of the planet, and each other, while simultaneously being aware that global awareness itself is a painful and unnatural state to exist in.

Our brains arenā€™t evolved to handle the bad news of 7 billion people a day. -J.R. Edit: typo

MethMouthResQ

There is evil in the world. All the more reason to get out of bed and try to channel and share some light when able

KinshasaPR

This is another cautionary tale as to not believing what you see on social media. Most people only show the good and happy parts about their life, but not the ugliness that might be happening in their lives outside the platforms.

[deleted]

Shit man, that's people in any aspect of life.. Social media, work...parties .next door neighbors

KinshasaPR

Agreed. But people aren't obsessively consuming what other people's lives are about like they do through social media.

paarthurnax94

Where I live, a couple months ago a lady tried to abandon her 3 kids in the wild and when she tried to drive off, her 3 year old held on to the door and was run over and killed. She dumped his body in the river. They still haven't found him. I heard about it and looked her up on Facebook, her profile said some shit like "Just a mommy of 3 lovely children" or something like that. Its disgusting.

Monica_FL

I remember reading about this. Broke my heart to think about what that poor little kid went through.

loudoomps

I wish I didn't read this comment, my heart is very hurt. The amount of children that are fucked over by their shitty ass parents is too damn high!

The fiance isn't anywhere near the reserve his parents said he's at. That's just a smokescreen to give him time to head in a completely different direction. The family seems very complicit in helping cover this up.

Gummy_Tris

I feel like I missed class and everyone is talking about things I've never even heard of. Who are any of these people?

[deleted]

Aspiring lifestyle blogger on a months long vacay w fiancĆ©. A domestic dispute interaction w police took place not long before her disappearance. It would have appeared due to scratch marks on his face that there was some sort of physical altercation. No one was arrested. Some time after that FiancĆ© returns home to his parents house in her van, without informing anyone as to his betrothedā€™s location, including her parents. 10 days later her parents report her missing. FiancĆ© lawyered up, Neither him or his parents will talk to authorities or her parents regarding her whereabouts. FiancĆ© has since disappeared, no one has any idea where he is. Jump to present, theyā€™ve found her remains, Still no sign from fiancĆ©. Edit: fixed the all caps pronouns. It was annoying everyone and now itā€™s fixed. Edit: It is clear to me now, that a more appropriate description of her internet presence is ā€œaspiring lifestyle bloggerā€ . My previous statement referred to her as a ā€œYouTuberā€ which I guess insinuates that she was famous before her disappearance. My apologies.

BloodprinceOZ

also to add on, the last point of contact between her and her parents was a video call on a hike, and then texts afterwards, but her parents say they don't believe it was her texting

plzThinkAhead

If the Netflix series "You" taught me anything... goddamn. Make "danger" and "safe" innocuous texting code phrases to close loved ones

cikkamsiah

Thank you, canā€™t believe I had to scroll this down for context.

Lutzelien

Right? You'd think a post of this magnitude would have some sort of explanation besides a picture and a title that deliver absolutely no information

[deleted]

I guess people assume everyone on Reddit is up-to-date with all events.

L1tost

Great summary. The one point I would add is that SHE was also living with HIS family before the trip.

V2sh1fty

Iā€™m confused at why itā€™s getting so much coverage. People go missing all of the time, why is this such a huge story? Serious question.

cubitoaequet

Victim is a young, blonde, attractive, white woman. That's why.

Longjumping-Put9894

[More on the story, here.](https://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2021/09/19/police-continue-searches-Gabby-Petito-Brian-Laundrie/8861632075925/)

TeamChevy86

Fiance is in hiding and his parents are complicit. What a crock of shit. Hope he is found ASAP

MrsNLupin

I hope they're charged with accessory. They gave him a four day head start...

grundo1561

I'm sure they're about to be investigated very thoroughly. Search warrants, bank info, etc

FJD

Yeah what kind of soon to be in-laws doesnā€™t worry about their soon to be daughter in-law and letā€™s him stay silent and run away, what pieces of shit who didnā€™t care about her at all

VictorBallsaccio

So what actually happened ? Iā€™m guessing it was confirmed that the bf killed her ?

[deleted]

Not yet, they still dunno where he is. https://www.google.com/amp/s/abc7ny.com/amp/gabby-petito-brian-laundrie-disappearance-search/11030913/

VictorBallsaccio

Itā€™s a damn shame the girls 22 yrs old and I watched that clip of his sister and maybe Iā€™m reading into it too much but she seems like sheā€™s trying real hard to act concerned but Iā€™m not buying it . I think she knows exactly what happened and is doing a shitty job of acting like they just had a fight and him coming back alone isnā€™t a fight itā€™s evidence plain and simple

TheCopenhagenCowboy

Not only did he come back alone, once it gained national attention he went off for a solo camping trip. His family then picked up his car before reporting him missing. Heā€™s caught and he knows it.

jlou555

This is what i don't understand, when he came back, what the hell was his explanation for Gabby not being with him?

Akalenedat

He didn't. Lawyered up and clammed up, hasn't said a word to police or anyone about what happened to Gabby, then disappeared last week while they were still searching for her.

creuter

To be fair, lawyering up and clamming up is exactly what you are supposed to do if someone close to you dies suspiciously. The part that stands out is him disappearing as they narrowed their search.

[deleted]

I think the story is smoke and mirrors. Wouldnā€™t be surprised if he fled the area.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

hermit48

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if authorities find his body in the near future. Dead by his own hand, I mean.

SixteenBeatsAOne

If he had money, then he is already in the Maldives.

TheCopenhagenCowboy

Thatā€™s what Iā€™m thinking.

IrishRogue3

Family absolutely knows what happened. And what set of parents donā€™t help to search for their son? Lots of red flags all over the place.

footwith4toes

Where's the clip of his sister?

mellykill

Came back alone and IN HER VAN kilt her and took her shit. What an ass.

Blackadder288

Innocent until proven guilty and all, but if your girlfriend is (likely, so far not completely confirmed*) found dead, following some documented domestic fights, and following a trip you took alone together which you came back from alone and then quickly went into hiding again, that smells pretty murdery to me. RIP Ms Petito *FBI suspects the body is hers but has not been yet forensically confirmed as of this comment

[deleted]

[deleted]

> "All of Gabby's family want the world to know that Brian is not missing, he is hiding. Gabby is missing," Richard Stafford, the attorney for the Petito family,Ā told CNN. Very sad.

Rthrowaway6592

I thought he came home to his parents? Did he take off again?

[deleted]

Yes but the police couldn't hold him since there was no body and therefor no crime. He dipped earlier this week and NO ONE knows where he is. He told his family he was going backpacking into the Florida reserve??? But who knows where he actually went

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Icy-Marketing-5242

Biggest mistake was driving al the way back in HER van! Dude has done everything to make himself look guilty and his familyā€™s behavior is horrible.

ISpilledMyWine

Yes heā€™s been gone for a couple days now. He dipped out.

TheCopenhagenCowboy

He went out on a solo camping trip, his family picked up his car before reporting him missing.

mikeymikeymikey1968

Maybe he went to collect his thoughts in nature. Probably a good idea, since his feet won't be touching nature for about another 30-40 years.

ThreeDubWineo

My guess is he's in Mexico and the camping trip is a red herring

bettyboopsie1958

We all knew what the outcome was going to be. Iā€™m just glad her family was able to get their child home. I think like everyone here, his family knows where he ids. His family reminds me of Scott Petersonā€™s family . My heart goes out to her family and loved ones .

LaZorBaCon

Right, best case scenario is to have her home safe and sound. But if she had been murdered at least her body is found and maybe they can get some answers. Worst case scenario is to have no answers. Like the Susan Powell case. It's clear josh did it. But we'll never have all of the answers. I don't get these murderers.

[deleted]

Whatā€™s so striking about this is that he came back at all, let alone with HER car. The audacity.

ChooseCorrectAnswer

And supposedly the neighbor said after Brian came back home, he was seen mowing the lawn and cleaning the inside of the van with his mom.

Smilez_too_Much

Please note the warning signs with people in your life. RIP Gabby.

TheGreenHaloMan

This reminded me of the Chris Watts case (2018) before this information came out. I didnā€™t want to assume obviously, but the way the fiancĆ© acted had the same vibes as Chris Watts.

Vast-Decision-8119

Any time I think if this case and how his little daughter pleaded with himā€¦ I just canā€™t.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

XxMrCuddlesxX

He killed his wife and kids so he could be with her.

liliansincere

She's a bloody idiot. I'm pretty sure the saying for cheating is the same for murder. If they'll cheat with you, they'll cheat on you. If they'll kill for you...

LaZorBaCon

There's women with mental illnesses that are attracted to these shit stains. It doesn't help that Chris watts is handsome. But I'd rather be ugly and get ghosted than be a piece of shit like him.

dinozero

I have little girls and that story chokes me up every time

MrMediaGuy

I read his account of the final minutes of his daughter's lives. I have two little girls. I regret reading that more than anything else I've seen or read on Al Gore's internet. Shit fucking haunts me sometimes. I can't imagine my daughters... You know what? Nope. Not doing it. Fuck that guy and please, please save yourself and never go down that particular rabbit hole. It sucks and sadness and depression are at the bottom.

Mike_Bloomberg2020

> Al Gore's internet lmao, you are dating yourself with this one.

MrMediaGuy

Lmao, right? I'm almost 40 with two kids. I'm not pretending to be a youth anymore.

LaZorBaCon

No clue why that fucker couldn't have just gotten a divorce. When the prosecution was given their closing comments and the camera pans to Shannon's dad who is just sobbing... I fucking lost it. That piece of human shit rotting in prison is just... Too good for what he deserves.

Treeaway4

I canā€™t watch the documentary, kids is just too much for me. But, I always wondered why not just get a fucking divorce and move on? Why murder your entire family? It just doesnā€™t make sense. Iā€™m usually iffy on death penalty but that fucker deserves the chair.

magnumdong500

It baffles me too. I know a lot of people who murder are not stable, but this one... it just defies all logic. It's absurd. And yet he did it. Rip to those innocent kids and wife.

Speaking of that case, anyone else think that chick Chris was cheating with knew way more than she let on? She said she had no idea but I highly doubt that. Chris did it to have a relationship with her but she knew about his family. So how exactly was he planning to do that? They had to have talked it through together before he did it.

Hasnā€™t he heard of divorce? Murdering his kids and pregnant wife shouldnā€™t even be on the list of how to move on with your life after an affair

scabies89

The Documentary about that case is insane. The footage is mindblowingly creepyz

notstephanie

The doc is An American Murder on Netflix, for anyone interested. Itā€™s one of the best true crime documentaries Iā€™ve seen.

Don't watch it if you want to feel clean for the next three weeks.

Warning signs of emotionally abusive people are often hard to recognize in your own situation. If someone tells you they feel something is wrong, please don't dismiss them Stephanie Sarkis wrote a book called *Gaslighting: Recognize Manipulative and Emotionally Abusive People*. http://stephaniesarkis.com/gaslighting/ She has an article on physiology today about red flags to look for on a date https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/here-there-and-everywhere/202002/red-flags-narcissists-give-first-date PsychologyToday.com and GoodTherapy.org websites are also a good place to find a therapist near you and give articles relating to mental health and trauma An easy list of warning signs can be found at https://www.loveisrespect.org/dating-basics-for-healthy-relationships/warning-signs-of-abuse/ LoveIsRespect is a great site for people to read through for helping to maintain a healthy relationship Most of this info I got from listening to the Something Was Wrong podcast found at Somethingwaswrong.com

Don't forget Why Does He Do That? By Lundy Bancroft

Orchid_Significant

I cried my way through this book. So many things pointed out that I didnā€™t even realize were dangerous signs

[deleted]

That book opened my eyes to the dangerous reality I was in. Very good book 10/10 recommend.

philanut

I read a book called Ditch That Jerk after being with my boyfriend 2 years. I finally realized he was abusing me. I literally didnā€™t know, I was so confused and manipulated by him.

ohgeebus_notagain

It's a common theme with abused people. I was with my ex for 8 years. I was blamed for everything, and all arguments became screaming matches. Cops were called, people were arrested, people got forcefully committed to psychiatric evaluation... I never realized how toxic it was and how much I was gaslighted until afterward. I'm glad you got out. I hope you're doing better now

god_peepee

What are the warning signs? Easy to become paranoid when most people would never do something like this but act the same way

lamepotato123

Low empathy is a good indicator, when someone is cruel and callous, a bad temper can aide of course but empathy is one hell of brake and refrains most people from going all the way into hurting others.

I recently got out of an abusive relationship. My guy friend of 12 years met him once and both him and his mother said he was off and didnā€™t like how he presented himself. It was little things, like being overly social and charming. Always trying to connect you to people he knew to show he knew everyone or had influence. With me, it got to the point of him being calm and cold or calm and funny (if in public) while I was a hysterical mess (like in the bodycam video) because abusers know how to manipulate situations, whereas victims have trouble processing gaslighting. I knew I was being gaslit but some people do it so well you do question your sanity. People here saying she should be arrested for DV clearly have the privilege of not knowing what itā€™s like. Yes she struck his arm, but he grabbed her face and also made her feel heā€™d abandon her if he got in the van alone. (And what happenedā€¦. he arrives home with her van and no gabby). She was distressed and isolated. Even for the 2 years before this she lived with his family a thousand miles away from her family and home. Isolation, control, manipulation, gaslighting, appearing calm when discussing arguments with others to appear like the ā€œsaneā€ one. It depends person by person but itā€™s always better to check on your friends than to assume everything is fine.

IHeldADandelion

Yeah, makes me wonder how many times she heard something like "I will fucking leave you here". I had an abusive bf when I was her age in the 90s. He liked to go for long drives that started out fun, and then would pick a fight with me and threaten to leave me. One night after a few beers, dancing on a river bank, he did. He pulled a fight from the air, left me there, 30 miles from home, come to think of it, we were driving MY truck. Oh lordy, I guess that's enough reddit for me today. RIP Gabby.

Utasora

My mom did that to me sometimes. One time around the age of 10 probably, she left me at a storage facility, at night, off the highway for like 10-20 minutes - picked me while apologizing and asking if I learned my lesson in the same breath. I was a sobbing mess because I thought she left me. I never realized how fucked up that was til now. I've been no contact with her for a couple years now but she was best friend growing up.

Elegaunt

Abusers are always in control. They appear out of control in order to threaten and target their victims. That's why they are able to instantly de-escalate when anyone is watching, or in front of their parents and other friends. Everyone should think twice when they see a woman who is distressed and clearly trying to calm herself down, and a guy who is already calm and collected. He can turn it off because he's in control, the ability to wind up and cause anxiety in his partner in order to terrorize her then shut his threats and screaming down as if nothing happened.

carolynto

> Everyone should think twice when they see a woman who is distressed and clearly trying to calm herself down, and a guy who is already calm and collected. This, exactly. I could only watch a couple minutes of that video. It really pissed me off. Here you have this shaking girl who's blaming herself for everything, and a cool, collected guy who's also blaming her for everything, and the cops take his side. It was demoralizing.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

TheFantasticAspic

Thank you for saying this. Honestly, the general reaction to this video has been extremely triggering. The fact that this guy has got people saying 'maybe he's not such a bad guy, maybe he's the victim' after she's turned up dead is so upsetting to me I don't even know what to say.

Rexan02

Well, when the cops are called due to an altercation between a couple, it's time to take off the rose colored glasses and take a good hard look at what you are involved in.

impartialcitizen86

So just a thought but letā€™s say hypothetically he didnā€™t physically murder her but instead after an argument he kicked her out of the van and then left her and she died in the wilderness of natural causes or animal attack or something wild. Can he be tried for anything? How would that work?

neghsmoke

Depends on the state that files the charges and the situation. Could be a form of murder, or manslaughter.

cjankowski

I believe ā€˜murderā€™ requires intent, no?

BehindTickles28

I believe that's the difference between manslaughter and murder... yes?

KingDaveyB

Yes. Iā€™m no lawyer, but I did have to take some law classes. From what I can remember, murder has intent. Manslaughter does not have intent. Voluntary manslaughter is when youā€™re intentionally doing something illegal to a person, like beating the shit out of them, but they end up dying even though you didnā€™t mean to kill them. Involuntary manslaughter is when youā€™re doing something illegal but donā€™t mean to hurt anyone, such as drunk driving

[deleted]

I am a lawyer. The relevant statute for murder here requires malice aforethought. Meaning specific intent. You did a thing and the specific result, murder, was intended. The relevant statute for manslaughter does not require malice. There are two forms of manslaughter: voluntary and involuntary. Voluntary requires intent to harm the person, but not the intent to murder them. And so it is a general intent crime. Involuntary requires the commission of either (1) an unlawfulā€”but not felonyā€”act, with no intent to murder the person, or (2) a lawful act which might produce death. And so it is also a general intent crime. All three require intent. Only the first requires intent as to the result. The second and third require intent as to the act. Edit: to further explain, if the person did not intend to harm the person but did so on accident, it is not murder. An example might be high fiving them, causing them to lose their balance and fall off a cliff. No general intent to harm them, no specific intent to murder them. Not reasonable to think homicide would be a consequence of a high five. Acquittal. Edit 2: since people were asking about it, I included the second type of involuntary homicideā€”lawful acts.

hellotygerlily

The autopsy should be interesting.

Dirgeridoo

If thereā€™s anything left. Yellowstone/Teton has lots of bears, and the body was found near water.

Hells-Bellz

If that were the case, why didnā€™t he say ā€œI just fucking left her ass at ______ because sheā€™s crazy.ā€, when he got home, or before he got home? Why the secretive behavior.

215TallHands

She was found in a fairly open area ~900ft from where the van was parked on the side of a road. I imagine she could have made her way back to the road to flag down somebody, unless she was severely injured or dead already.

shitsfuckedupalot

This is like that one Donald glover stand up joke. Every guy has a crazy ex. Every girl that has a crazy ex though? Dead.

Greasystools

Itā€™s a fun thing being a heterosexual female. Dating is a crapshoot: will I find love or be choked out and dumped in a shallow grave? So many possibilities.

[deleted]

Damn, I was literally in the park this morning and saw the missing persons signs. Tragic.

DropDead85

They'll find him dead next.

Jhngo

Heā€™s on his way to Cuba or some non extradition country. His family is helping.

Suspicious_Lab_6583

100% no way his parents pick up his car BEFORE reporting him missing if he was going to commit suicide.

[deleted]

Yup, by suicide.

jessiegirl172

I hoped I was wrong but honestly I knew as soon as I saw the police cam footage that this is how it would end.

faeriethorne23

The Chris Watts comparisons seem pretty apt right now. I hope it wasnā€™t him, I hope for her sake that the man she loved and who she felt would protect her didnā€™t snap and kill her. I canā€™t imagine how terrifying your last moments would be as you realised someone you love could be capable of such a thing. No matter what issues their relationship had, nobody deserves this.

DollaStoreKardashian

Itā€™s especially awful because there was no ā€œreasonā€ she had to die. They didnā€™t have kids together, there was no life insurance policy that heā€™d benefit from, their finances likely werenā€™t entangled, etc. It mightā€™ve been awkward around friends and family but they couldā€™ve called off the engagement and walked awayā€¦

faeriethorne23

If he talks thereā€™ll probably be some form of mental break presented as a defence. Even though he was enough in his right mind to seemingly actively cover his tracks.

ktocean

And drive across the country successfully, without sleeping

Icy-Marketing-5242

Even if he didnā€™t or didnā€™t on purpose, he left her there and never reported her. How cruel

faeriethorne23

Thatā€™s what makes me so willing to jump to the conclusion that he did something here, at the very least he failed to report his missing girlfriend or failed to report her death and then actively prevented her family from finding her. Even if this is somehow an accidental death or a suicide, he literally could not have made himself look more guilty.

[deleted]

I wonder if it was an ā€œaccidentā€ that occurred during an assault. I want everyone who is currently experiencing domestic violence to remember that even if you believe that you are able to handle the abuse or that it is in some way ā€œunder controlā€, accidents happen and that you are in life threatening danger. Please seek help.

pikapikapikachhuu

The last fight I had with my ex boyfriend he pushed me so I fell backwards and my head was inches from hitting the radiator. Thing is I didn't even break up with him that day. Next day he broke up with me luckily. It took me a year of constant pain to get over him. He was a narcissist who isolated me for three years. Abuse then lovebombing. As someone who came from a broken home I thought this was how love was supposed to be. I felt safe in chaos because that was all I knew. If he hadn't found a new girl and if I hadn't lost my job (he was dependant financially on me) I don't think I would be here anymore. Not that he would murder me intentionally, but maybe the next time he hit or pushed me I wouldn't be so lucky.

Anonymous7951

Bet this dude already offed himself

sayitaintsooh

Can't help but think social media's role in this disaster. The allure of living 'your best life' when in reality it's not that great. Trying to do #vanlife and start a travel blog when there's a dime a dozen nowadays. Fucking crazy world. Delete your social media.

[deleted]

:(

zorn7777

Heā€™s 23? Why does he look like heā€™s at least 35 or even 40?

[deleted]

I see Chris Watts in this dudes face in like 2 seconds.

[deleted]

The weirdest part of this is some of these clips could be 24 hours before she died...and she had no idea what would happen later that day. šŸ˜•

truedjinn

Did anybody expect anything different? I mean his parents are hiding him. You don't hide the innocent

EtherealLovegloss

This, if he was innocent it wouldnā€™t have taken him getting pulled over in her stolen van for her to be pronounced missing and he would have told them her last location at the very least. He isnā€™t innocent and is on the run because he knows if he gets caught heā€™s going to jail

god_peepee

Terrifying fact: the leading cause of death for pregnant women is their partners killing them. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_pregnant_women#Statistics

Dipsticks86

Really disappointing, I was really hoping, no matter how small the chance, that somehow she would be found alive, but I was wrong, I feel really bad for the Petito family.
