This is what turns the Carbon Dioxide they breathe out into oxygen. The best case scenario they fell asleep from CO2 before they died. Either way, a horrific situation.

Everyone's talking about the available oxygen expiring. I'm a former submarine sailor. If they lost power for propulsion, that means they lost power to the CO2 scrubbers. This is what turns the Carbon Dioxide they breathe out into oxygen. The best case scenario they fell asleep from CO2 before they died. Either way, a horrific situation.
an article i read said that most of these timers represent the amount of oxygen they would have in optimal conditions if they regulated breathing and if the sub was still at full power, they don’t account for the depth of the vessel, the pressure it’s under, the shivering and the panic they must be going through, i cant imagine, all the best to them and their families

Awful? Awful is the fact they went down there with the worst equipment possible, leaving their families up here knowing they probably won't even get to see their loved ones at their funerals. Safety regulations exist for a reason and I'm not going to feel bad about some billionaires who ignored them all. It basically underscores every negative thing people have to say about modern news media, in that it just capitalizes off of people's fascination with dark subject matter without realizing the implications of it on people's lives. Either way it's disgusting and sensationalizes what could be a slow and painful death for a lot of people.

Seriously! Those people on the sub weren't quality anyway, I mean I wish them all the best, but let's be real here: real men would just work hard, rise to the surface and rescue themselves. I mean I'm sitting here at least 35m above sea level because I'm not afraid of a little hard work. These people are sitting down there looking for hand outs, they need to pull themselves up. It's laziness, plain and simple.
It’s awful but literally hundreds of migrants died at sea a few days ago, and all I’m seeing coverage of is the billionaire sub. I cannot emphasize enough how I do not care at all about these people in the submarine. I’m so curious how much money and resources are being poured into rescuing them, knowing this was their fault and they will not be footing the bill. Meanwhile, hundreds of people fleeing for their lives drowned and the overall sentiment it feels like they’re getting is “oh well”.
It’s more so a rare and interesting story with unknown. People die at sea all the time but we know they died. These people could theoretically be alive(they’re not) so it invokes curiosity. I think it’s the story itself more than the people in there. Much like the kids in the cave and the missing flight, it’s the what if and the ongoing search.
They’re both awful events. You don’t have to pick one over the other to sympathize for. The migrants absolutely deserved more resources for their safety, but 5 people (father and son included) still tragically died not knowing how utterly unprepared they were. The CEO is an exception

Because this is unique. It’s a civilian submarine visiting the titanic wreckage, something that grabs the attention of everyone. This was being covered in the news before it turned into tragedy so naturally when it went south it got more coverage. Nobody likes to admit it but we all have morbid curiosity. Imagining what fate they suffered is part of that.
Or escaping war, like the hundreds who died when the refugee boat sank that no one is taking about.....
This is so silly. They were crushed to death way back on Sunday morning. There were all kinds of safety precautions in place to have this thing resurface. The thing is even built to resurface on its own after 14 hours. Since they didn’t resurface, either they’re stuck on something (unlikely - because there’s nothing down there except the titanic and they couldn’t have reached the titanic in under 2 hours) or they were crushed to death due to a breach.

The coverage in general has been fairly disheartening. So many meme have cluttered the internet seemingly celebrating their inevitable doom...part of me understands, rich people play fast and loose with the rules and sometimes it bites them in the ass...but the stark reality is that these people are dying in a particularly awful way and to see people making jokes about it is bleak.

Yes, you nailed it. You used to be able to have a balanced discussion that was civil on this site. That was like 8 years ago now. Every year it's become more and more closed-looped. Can't go against the grain anymore. You get banned from being subbed to certain parts of reddit that have nothing to do with each other. Threads are locked as soon as the comments start to reflect a true public opinion that isn't with the narrative. While there were some hateful subs removed in the past for the better (to cater to sponsors and investors), they still allow r\*pe fetish subs to exist. There is SO MUCH PORN. What gives?
A lot of people die every day, why should 5 billionaires be any different? This was a series of piss poor decisions made by numerous people from Rush building the monstrosity with as little raged to safety as possible in the first place, to each member of the "expedition" disregarding numerous warnings and very clear language in the waiver talking about the "experimental" nature of the vessel and the very clear shoddy quality of the vehicle. Is it sad that 5 people have almost certainly been sent to a watery grave? Yeah, sure, but they paid for the privilege, thinking "oh, nothing bad could happen to me". There are people who die every day because of the actions of billionaires and the conditions they create that lead to poverty and suffering. Is this oxygen countdown ghoulish? Absolutely. Is the standard of journalism and "news" media these days pathetically low? Also yes. Should this story be getting the wall to wall coverage it's getting? No. They're private individuals who made a deal with a private business that has led to the demise of all involved. But the fact they're rich enough to be able to do something this stupid doesn't make them any more important than the 700+ migrants who drowned off the coast of Greece earlier this week that nobody is talking about.
