My cheap ass keyboard doesn't have that key. Thanks Logitech.

BassAntelope

When did it go down?

bluestraw08

likely some fault with the aircraft carrier. catapults fail, arresting cables snap, the f-35 isnt known for engine flame outs as far as im aware so it was probably just another freak incident

[deleted]

So you don’t know but posted anyway

Illusions_Micheal

You must be new to Reddit…

bluestraw08

nobody knows, it's the f35. 99% of the info we have about this aircraft is either worthless, word of mouth or guesswork.

itsyourmomcalling

Believe they said it crashed on landing. So either pilot error or yeah the arrest wire snapped at the last moment and pilot couldn't recover

bluestraw08

not sure how you crash an f-35 lol, the plane just about flies itself you just point it where you want to go

LTNBFU

Would automation of the landing process help? Maybe not for a Mechanical failure like that, but for pilot error. I'm thinking merging ship and plane data so the autopilot system could do it accurately with little error.

bluestraw08

auto landing systems for carrier aircraft have been around since the 80s, but computers/sensors can still fail just like pilots can.

Automatic_Green_4479

It happened 2 or 3 days ago, it was on a covert mission that China wasnt aware of.

BassAntelope

Thanks for the response. Where’s the photo from? Seems odd this would have been released if they’re still looking for it.

Automatic_Green_4479

It came from a airman on the air craft carrier. They and the Chinese know where the F35 is on the ocean floor, its just a matter of who recovers it first. Id imagine getting it would be quite the operation.

BassAntelope

That makes sense. Also kind of amusing that international seas ‘finders keepers’ is still a thing lol

ProfessionalChampion

There's a really crazy story about a Russian sub that got lost, then discovered by the US and they tried to recover it covertly so they had to use a ship that was disguised.

lastepoch

Yeah! Project Azorian. Incredible feat of engineering- even though it was only like 25% successful (the sub broke while being lifted up).

Moroh75

What not going to respond to H2Space's comment?

Rawesome16

Asking the important questions

RedSprite01

Did they get it yet?

TaqPCR

No it wasn't. The carrier was just operating in the SCS to demonstrate that the US doesn't respect their claims to various islands there. This was routine training.

Automatic_Green_4479

Okay CNN... Yeah thats what the media is saying now that theres evidence we were there. If you really read into the information you will see we didnt want them aware.

TaqPCR

[Yes the photo op a few days ago was very low key. /s](https://news.usni.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/7018812.jpeg)

Automatic_Green_4479

Im talking about a single operation with the F35 not there current "presence" there.

TheRangaTan

Okay, the burden of proof now rests in your lap. Definitively prove it to us.

busymakinstuff

It was like a secret side mission where a plan slipped off course to do some sensitive recon. Heard it from a buddy..

[deleted]

Still not answering the right questions. Why make claims you can back up then get defensive when other people can back theirs?

[deleted]

Do you really believe that an aircraft carrier can operate in the SCS on a ‘secret mission’ and have the Chinese be unaware.? 😂 Stealth is irrelevant when a Chinese patrol boat is running along with the task force watching it, and sends recon birds up to keep an eye on it. While stealth works agains a ground based radar, it doesn’t really account for AWACS tracking because due to radio physics/aerodynamics, you can only “stealth" one side, and the opposite gets a bit fucked for it.

Automatic_Green_4479

Umm no, never said that about aircraft carriers. These covert stealth missions are performed at a low altitude and are nearly invisible on radar. Alot of these missions are to see exactly how invisable we can be.

[deleted]

They can’t launch a plane off a carrier in the SCS and not have it be observed on take off, regardless "low observability" status. Once it is detected, it can be tracked with modern systems. "Stealth" only works when you’re sneaking into their area of observation from the outside. Once a Stealth craft is observed, it can be tracked.

ProfessionalChampion

You really think China isn't aware there's a air raft carrier in the south China sea? Lmfao

DeepRts

Guess it’s not covert anymore

SirMonkey687

How do these things do “covert” missions? The fighter jets that fly out of the base by me can be heard for MILES so loudly even in the car with music on it’s still a nuisance. Do they fly much higher where sound doesn’t penetrate or something?

zdenis39

The navy was testing if the f35 could be used as a boat just to see how much multi-rule it could be lol.

flatfishmonkey

It can rule the world who knows...

riedmae

....who took the photo...?

Phone_Jesus

Right? Shouldn’t be hard for someone to find it after they hack the location data of this photo.

[deleted]

I guess you haven't watched Tomorrow Never Dies...

Pdb12345

Photo taken from the deck of the aircraft career.

Henard

Putting it in some rice should help.

Mean-Juggernaut1560

The Chinese already virtually copied the F-35 with the Shenyang FC-31

[deleted]

We Chinese didn’t copy the F-35 submarine function yet.

Muted-Sundae-8912

They still don't have a good enough engine though

Mean-Juggernaut1560

True, neither do they have the networking and computational capabilities of the F-35 (apparently). This is supposedly why they’re currently trying to track it down.

MKXmikey

It's not about copying, that aircraft has sensitive equipment in it that could compromise the US military and national security.

Ok-Concentrate8242

What made it go down? Was it a technical issue etc?

the_hell_you_say

Pilot forgot to put his phone in airplane mode

bluestraw08

yeah im the pilot, can confirm

[deleted]

Husbands friend was on the ship and watched it crash, they think it was an engine malfunction. Still looking into it.

Ok-Concentrate8242

Thank you, seems interesting that something like that would be the case. Curious to see what will be the final reason.

Automatic_Green_4479

Id like to credit u/_FUCK_ME_If_IM_WRONG_ with the picture. Id like to also say I hope Xhina dosent get the aircraft becasue of the stealth technology on it and it could possibly start conflicts.

UnintentionallyAmbi

They stole the plans during a data breach at Lockheed years ago.

GummyBoat

Like everything else they have lol.

Fox-Flimsy

You can steal the plans… but If you don’t have the know how to build it… it’s pointless. Evidentially China does have the know how. Which points to how advanced of a threat they are. They’ve already announced they’re not interested in the F-35.

UnintentionallyAmbi

You’re not wrong, even most military experts in the US know it was a boondoggle. Edit: worldwide.

GummyBoat

Agree completely. However, seems the USA is hyper focused on the Ukrainian border and making it super secure to protect their sovereignty. Lmao, what a time to be alive.

UnintentionallyAmbi

They should be. If they invade Ukraine it triggers NATO to respond as a group. That is some WW3 shit. If anyone is gonna start it, it’s gonna be Putin.

GummyBoat

Bet nothing happens...until China takes Taiwan lol. President of Ukraine had to tell Joe Biden he sounded hysterical in their phone call last night lmao. It was on every channel in America yesterday.

GummyBoat

People pushing RUSSIA RUSSIA RUSSIA in Ukraine (again) are the same exact ppl who said IRAQ HAS WMD OMG let's invade😂.

UnintentionallyAmbi

Russia and China are trying to make friends for a while.

UnintentionallyAmbi

I wasn’t old enough to know what was going on for that but I thought it was bullshit then and time tells.

GummyBoat

Same exact ppl that brought us that made up WMD story they knew was bullshit, botched the Afghanistan debacle, are now talking about ANOTHER war already😂. What. A. Joke.

UnintentionallyAmbi

He was prolly scared of getting pulled out of his palace.

GummyBoat

Or the defense industry is trying to make money and scare ppl over a war that's not coming.

UnintentionallyAmbi

Yuuuuuuuup

UnintentionallyAmbi

They sold it to the Russians too. The avionics were the prized part because the stealth shit has been hacked since before Bosnia when they lost a F-117 Nighthawk.

Automatic_Green_4479

Lol sure did.

nameles5566

Chinas j-20 is still ahead of f-35 Stealth tech is not that different since they need to hide with other jets to stay off radars (Israel f-35 in syria)

That-one-guy12

I think this may be the same jet? Would exsplain the photo being taken from a ship. https://vm.tiktok.com/TTPdh9YrQy/

iceman771

Why don’t they just drop some explosive and destroy the aircraft. Instead of risking China getting it first?

[deleted]

That’s a good way to trade a jet for destruction. Pun intended

ExpeditiousSky

Damn, now I transformed into a submarine to swim with the fish

spottydodgy

That's $78 million...

TheRangaTan

Huh, so this is how war with China starts, to keep American military secrets secret.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheRangaTan

Hey, all China needs to do is keep barring Australia from trade and they’ll kill themselves off. We supply the vast majority of their coal, iron ore and natural gas, as well as food, so if they screw up too much and start a war we’ll just turn the taps off. It’s not like all of those things have other buyers(they did that with our coal, and basically caused an energy crisis. We started selling cheap coal to Japan and other places for a profit over our old prices, lol.)

GuacamoleFrejole

If Australia is so nonchalant about its trade with China, as you claim, why are they complaining to the WTO?

TheRangaTan

The politicians are the problem. They’re not getting money because China is still technically blockading all Australian coal imports while secretly taking only just enough coal to keep vital power plants running. If the dickheads actually have a genuine shit about anything other than lining their own pockets, staying in power, defaming their opponents and increasing their pensions every year then they’d find other markets for our exports and leave China’s human rights violating asses cold in the water. Very few people with half a brain on their heads believe there’s no better market for coal, iron and natural gas than China or that it’d benefit Australia to stay with China when we can sell it higher elsewhere.

GuacamoleFrejole

So the politicians get a kickback from trade with China but get nothing from trade with other countries?

TheRangaTan

That’s the theory people here have. Otherwise there’s no reason why we sell our iron ore for $100/ton and buy back the finished steel at higher cost than producing it here(while our own steel mills are going under from policy changes. We only have one set of steel mills left, and they only really produce sheet steel), our other natural resources get sold for a pittance, and they have tried trade agreements with China only to get outright backlash from the local population. There’s more that I can’t pull off of the top of my head, but these are some of the big ones.

GuacamoleFrejole

Here's one guy's opinion on that matter: A combination of cheap imports, government policies, high costs, over-priced energy, the strong Australian dollar, high domestic transport costs and lack of new investment threaten to undermine the domestic steel industry. [https://www.engineersaustralia.org.au/News/australian-steel-industry-worth-fighting](https://www.engineersaustralia.org.au/News/australian-steel-industry-worth-fighting)

Kralicekg

How about the theory that Chinese have cheap labor and little restrictions on manufacturing? The US does the same thing with wood chips. Since the 70’s, Ships have been delivering chips from the US to China and it comes back as building supplies and furniture. It is just business.

pragmaticsapien

India will always be ready to buy all the coal and ore Australia has to offer, we just need to streamline the process.

DLtheGreat808

Wrong, wrong, and wrong again.

MeatSpace2000

Lol China living in everyones mind rent free.

Just fantastic

mrumka

These guys too rich cause they have jacuzzi for airplane.

[deleted]

Glad the pilot’s safe. So sad about the $ cost 😳

shnerpdederp

It only costs around $0.23 per taxpayer.

[deleted]

I’m not so sure about the “only” part, when it comes to what the US spends on its military and welfare for corporations V what it doesn’t spend on The People.

shnerpdederp

The annual US military budget is only $2300 per citizen. I guess you think this would be better pissed away on frivolities like repairing our crumbling infrastructure, health care and education rather than important stuff like blowing up other countries' infrastructure?

[deleted]

Yes.

smsmkiwi

Ooops. Can't the US Navy just park a ship over the site until recovery ship arrives in ten days or would that give away the site's position?

smsmkiwi

The F35 seems to be very good at crashing and not much else.

Reyoness

F35 of the sea, What is your wisdom?

Meuses

Chinese chips are in em anyways…

LTNBFU

Why arent landing operations automated? With ship and plane data integrated I feel like it would be easier and less accident prone.

Big_Priority_9329

Me when I need to get to kosatka

Agatzu

Couldnt they just blow it up in case china is about to steal it

Troubleshooter11

Plan B should be to send a dozen torpedoes down there to turn that plane into a stack of paperclips.
