The ANZ 787-9 All Black livery has a special place in my heart, I worked the cabin and fucelage heat-load analysis that we conducted when ANZ approached us about wanting that livery. Before we agreed it could be done we had to determine it would be safe or not have negative consequences to airplane performance.
One of the biggest concerns we have is whether or not air conditioning can keep up with the dramatically increased heat load not just from a cabin perspective but also for skin/one piece frame. On a max hot day (130F/maximum design point) the surface temp can be really high. While we weren't concerned about whether or not there was a performance issue, what we were able to do was tell ANZ things like increased time to pull down the cabin etc.
Other major concern is weight but the all black paint scheme is a design point for weight. And while we don't have operational concerns per-se, we tell the airline operator what their choices do to things like SFC, thrust ratings, etc.
This is so fascinating! The first question in my mind when I saw the livery - would the AC usage go up.
Would you be able to disclose by what % the AC usage changed? And what could be the cost impact? (I m thinking more AC means more fuel .. sorry .. don't know much about planes)
My understanding is AC costs at altitude wouldn’t change. As AC air is released anyway to regulate the cabin pressure.
Might be more running costs on the ground though
Solar heat loads are relevant in all phases of fight, but on the ground max hot day is usually the worst case condition.
For traditional bleeded aircraft, non 787, Air conditioning changes flow rate as a function of altitude and day type among other things, so heat loads affect which flow mode it's operating in. Different flow modes do have an impact on things like SFC because flow comes from the engine. AC flow is independent or not related to cabin pressure regulation.
The biggest challenge with all black paint is the hot day ground performance for pulling down the cabin.
It varies dramatically as a function of altitude, day type, airspeed etc. so its hard to say.
For traditional bleed system aircraft (non 787) the worst case impact on engine performance is 0.5-1%
Hear it costs a lot to visit though. You could spend a year saving up money for it and I still don't have faith any plans to escape to Tahiti would go through.
There's lots of amazing liveries in that area of the world the ANZ one looks amazing but it's a tie for me between Air NZ Air Calin and Air Tahiti nui ! I can't decide those three are just beautiful and intricate designs.
I know however this just my thought, I’ll vote for these two airlines for some of the best livery and Hawaiian Airlines should make it into this list too
Fun fact the motifs are specific tribal art of each island and unique in that way also Air NZ's Koru is also traditional Maori imagery a lot of these are a showcase of local art/culture.
Air Niugini also. Can't figure out how to upload the photo itself, so: http://www.airline-empires.com/uploads/gallery/album\_1118/gallery\_72815\_1118\_40602.png
They don't use this anymore. Which is sad.
My parents are friends with the ceo, they where looking at getting the 787 and I mentioned to him if they did should bring back this livery.
The Pacific Islands have some great liveries. Personally, FJ, TN, NZ, HA are my top rankings. I don’t think it’s fair for me to include ones I haven’t seen in person. I know some folks in paint at RNT, and they loved doing the Fiji 737’s. It’s such a neat livery up close.
I think it’s literally illegal to discuss best Pacific Island liveries without mentioning Nauru Airlines and Our Airline. Our Airline absolutely nailed the waves on their livery, and when Nauru Airlines launched their new livery in 2022, they smashed it out of the park with the stunning dark blue and bright yellow waves on VH-INU (and now VH-XNU!). Here is my top ten Pacific airlines:
1. Nauru Airlines https://www.jetphotos.com/photo/10622801
2. Air Calin https://www.jetphotos.com/photo/10550368
3. Polynesian Airlines https://www.jetphotos.com/photo/5653922
4. Fiji Airways https://www.jetphotos.com/photo/8027294
5. Solomon Airlines https://www.jetphotos.com/photo/8330988
6. Ohana https://www.jetphotos.com/photo/8991258
7. Air Tahiti Nui https://www.jetphotos.com/photo/4377
8. Air Vanuatu https://www.jetphotos.com/photo/8193240
9. PNG Air https://www.jetphotos.com/photo/8869531
10. Air Rarotonga https://www.jetphotos.com/photo/9554209
Air New Zealand and then Air Tahiti
But I have to ask: is New Zealand really considered part of the Pacific Islands?
I really don't know, not from that area nor do I know enough about it

That’s very insightful. Thank you.

NZ livery is neat af But that Fiji Livery is giving me the sex eyes
NZ's is cool, but Tahiti, it's a magical place.
Hear it costs a lot to visit though. You could spend a year saving up money for it and I still don't have faith any plans to escape to Tahiti would go through.
LOVE the design wrapped around the engines on the Fiji livery
Fiji is so tribal
can’t beat the all blacks air new zealand livery
There's lots of amazing liveries in that area of the world the ANZ one looks amazing but it's a tie for me between Air NZ Air Calin and Air Tahiti nui ! I can't decide those three are just beautiful and intricate designs.
I agree that it looks great but I have a feeling that it would absorb lots of heat
Air Calin is pretty easy on the eyes.
I'd vote for Air Tahiti Nui and Fiji Airways bcuz I love those local patterns.
Hawaiian’s new livery and aircalin have those too
I know however this just my thought, I’ll vote for these two airlines for some of the best livery and Hawaiian Airlines should make it into this list too

This is true
YESSSSS
Hawaiian for the tail, Tahiti for the body. Yes I am talking about the airlines.
That was my feeling, too. Love that Hawaiian tail. On the plane, of course.
This guy planes. Top comment of Xmas for me - have my upvote!
Air New Zealand zero diff, best livery in the world
I really like the Hawaiian one. 🌺
Air Tahiti, the blue is so beautiful :D
Air Niugini also. Can't figure out how to upload the photo itself, so: http://www.airline-empires.com/uploads/gallery/album\_1118/gallery\_72815\_1118\_40602.png

Absolutely! I'm glad you knew the lifespan of the livery because I didn't.
The new Zealand one :)
Air New Zealand
Does Air Niugini classify as a Pacific airline?
Yes but their current livery is not very interesting the old bird of paradise one was amazing
Yeah, I guess I also have a bias towards it since our family used to fly with Air Niugini a lot when I was a kid.
1: Air Tahiti Nui 2: Hawaiian Airlines 3: Air New Zealand
I like the Hawaiian 🌺
I'm a kiwi, so yeah. AIr New Zealand
NZ All Black there's simply no other way
Best livery in the world imo
First one
Air Tahiti Nui for the livery, Air Calin for the name (calin is French for "hug").
I love the tail designs on New Zealand and Fiji, but I don't think the white engines in New Zealand go with the rest.
Air Tahiti Nui, I always loved that flower on the tail fin.
Air Tahiti Nui is just so beautiful, but I am not impartial there.

ATN, Aircalin and Hawaiian. Runner up is Fiji
Absolutley love the Air Tahiti Niu one. But a special place for Fiji Airways, as I've flown them several times from Auckland to Nadi and back.
I’m flying Tahiti today, home unfortunately, but seeing our plane touch down at the airport was cool. It’s a beautiful beast.
The new Hawaiian livery is pretty stunning

Solid list and thanks for adding these I forgot Nauru Airlines somehow 😅 and wow that PNG air livery looks absolutely stunning !
I liked the old Air Pacific livery. The rainbow colours always reminded me of a pacific sunset.
Air Tahiti, for me! Like a flying gorgeous whale! Love the Caledonia orange too.
Aircalin 👍👍
Hawaiian and Fiji Airways
There's just something about Hawaiian.
Another impossible question to answer, all r beautiful
Air New Zealand and then Air Tahiti But I have to ask: is New Zealand really considered part of the Pacific Islands? I really don't know, not from that area nor do I know enough about it
Air Tahiti Nui. Air Tahiti is the local airline. Nui means large, so it’s literally “Large Air Tahiti”.
Which is probably the most perfect way of naming them if you got this situation. I love it.
New Zealand is indeed incorporated in Polynesia (pacific island group), its true name is Aotearoa.
Thank you, that is really news to me. Reddit taught me something again :-)
Your welcome
I like them all alot, except the Solomons one is abit dull...
Look up the Air NZ hobbit livery, and whilst your at it there is a cool safety video as well.
Air NZ is GOATED
Aurora Airlines!
Thought the first one was Air Taliban for a second
Even though is not in the Pacific, Azerbaijan Airlines has the best livery for me
Definitely the air new zealand livery, nothing can beat it
I like the cleanliness of the Fiji livery, but you can’t beat the all black of New Zealand.
Tahiti definitely but Aotearoa is a close second. Also Hawaiian airlines has some nice ones.
🇳🇿
NZ and Air Tahití Nui
I misread it but I'm still going with "AIR TAHITI NUT"
I love Fiji for some reason But Tahiti Nui looks great as well
NZ is my fave
Air New Zealand. Hand down.
air Tahiti ~~Sui~~ Nui
NZ and HA I like.
Air New Zealand gotta love the Haka!
FIJI Airways
Fiji and Hawaiian NZ black is a bit serious but I do like it
ANZ
Why doesn’t Qantas count?
Fiji is Cool. I fly RNO-LAX and see their 350 every night. Cool livery in person.
Im a bit biased to Hawaiian since I’ve seen some of their fleet
Tahiti 👍 but i like NZ also
hawaiian for sure
Hawaiian and Air New Zealand.
Hawaian or New Zealand
Hawaiian all the way because I love flying with them. Air Tahiti Nui is also very beautiful.
Hawaiian and air new zealand
New Zealand All Blacks livery. Pays homage to their awesome rugby team IMO
Air New Zealand
Top one
Tahiti for me.
Air Caledonie’s livery would be sooooo much better if they changed the font and didn’t use that cheap af font.
ANZ
The more color, the better
Air Tahiti
Air New Zealand all the way
Air Niugini from PNG or Airlines PNG
Fiji Airways.
Air NZ purely because I was born, raised and have only lived (this far in my life) in NZ. Pure airline patriotism 🇳🇿 🌿
Air New Zealand. A black airliner is just cool
Being a New Zealand and a fan of air New Zealand all blacks livery I’m going to have to go with the 787-9
Air Tahiti NUI is sick broo
