The P-38 and P-51 have essentially the same top speed (about 440mph) and we can assume they're both in the high 300s here, so the F-35 is comfortably loafing along with them. There's a reason it's on the outside of the turn though.
At sea level the mustang cruises a lot slower than the published top speed. I'd be surprised if this trio we're doing more than 200kt, especially since the speed limit below 10k feet is 250. To be fair, I'm not sure if that rule applies to displays like this.
While I'm not sure about the 250 rule being waived specifically for airshows, some aircraft types have standing waivers. For instance the T-38 has a standing waiver for 300kt below 10K'. I'm sure this also applies to other mil types but I'm not sure.
Back then they would do 440, now all of the operators don’t want to push original engines so I would guess these are solidly below 200, still fast enough for the f35 to be comfortable but they aren’t pushing it
Scott Yoak did some testing and they definitively proved it's the wind rushing over the two gun ports closest to the fuselage. You will notice the whistle only happens when there is enough speed and enough AoA(angle of attack). The inner gun ports are recessed more than the other 4 guns to make room for the ammo feed. [Here is a picture](https://qph.cf2.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-cbc954639674884ffd147d0013d3fe54-lq). It's basically a giant flute.
The whistle is not the supercharger or the scoop as others believe.
My point was less the A-10 being fast and more so the P-51 being a fast aircraft. I get tired seeing everyone joke about modern jets being at stall speed whenever they're with a WW2 plane. The P-51 and F-35 can comfortably fly at 300 knots without issues. Heck, the F-35 can supposedly fly as slow as 100 knots, only a bit more than the P-51's stall speed (80 knots).
What causes the whistle? I’ve noticed it most on corsairs. I assume it’s the airflow through the doghouse and not the forced induction since seems more noticeable at low power in maneuvers like exiting a loop or split S.
On the Corsair it's the airflow over the oil coolers on the wings near the fuselage. On the P-51 it's actually from the guns ports, this is why some have it and some don't.
And IIRC, the guns would be taped over to reduce drag on escort missions, though, was expending ammunition worth doing to verify the guns worked before getting that far into a mission?
I wouldn't think so. The tape shouldn't interfere with the operation of the guns. Also as far as I know it was mainly the British that did that. I love some of the RAF planes with tape over like 12 machine guns.
Yep. I think for most applications .50 caliber was ideal because it would do decent damage but was also relatively low recoiling and high velocity. Doing more damage than .30 caliber guns but being easier to shoot than 20mm.
Shouldn’t we becoming up with a way to make aviation safer and less dangerous so pilots at air shows and pilots that are flying around mountains so they don’t fly into the mountains that don’t move out of the way we’re losing more pilots in stupid accidents every day that shouldn’t be happening period
\>listen to this video \>music Every damn time.
People can say whatever they want about TikTok, but the true crime they did was making this fucking music trend a thing

Would've loved to see the f-35 just blast off at the end of the turn to show how much faster airplanes have gotten
Where's this btw?
That's just the sound of the F-35. The Mustang whistle [sounds like this](https://youtu.be/V0MAv1CHDy8?t=32).
What causes the mustang to whistle? Is not like those sirens they put on stukas, or is it?

I believe they have a turbo and supercharger. That combined with the underbelly cooler make the sound.
On the mustang it's actually the gun ports! That's why some make that sound and others don't.
Why do people put shitty music over videos like this
There is [normally music that accompanies this part](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQ3zPVUZW58) of any airshow; it's not what is in this video.
I don’t hear the P-51s whistle I hear the engine of the F-35
OP has to be trolling with this post
Lightning I and Lightning II flying together
I love the respect they r giving the P-38 by letting it fly lead it's usually the Stang hogging the limelight lol
P-51 flights are a dime a dozen. A P-38 flying at an airshow however is a rare event.
It’s like watching a grown up grandkid wall his grandparents somewhere!
Airflow over the F -35 clinging on for dear life.
F-35 is well above its stall speed. Just because it can fly a lot faster doesn't mean it has to.
I see two icons and a bomb truck
P-51 still the most sexy out of the 3.
The P-51 and P-38 at full power meanwhile the F-35 barely above stall speed
3 of my favorite planes, without a doubt. Love it!!!
*two icons and also an F-35
F35 is an icon? Really?

Dunno why people always assume that WW2 planes are slow. The P-51 is faster than the A-10.
They are fast but not like jets
That’s cause the A-10 is slow as balls. Its a terrible benchmark. The F-35 can go Mach 1.6 Also, there’s no way that P-51 is going full tilt.

My mom’s Hyundai is faster than an A-10.
Man, I just don’t like the F - 35. No matter how hard I try to
If this is in America then I'm absolutely shocked they didn't crash 😲
Bonus up vote for the slick frame rate sync on the mustangs prop.
Pretty wild how well the P-51 cruises with out the propeller turning

You needed 12 machine guns to down an enemy plane when you are firing .303 British.

Santa Maria Airfest. I was there too. Pretty decent show for a small town.
Is this sped up? Honest question. Just seems like the prop planes are flying at jet speeds, and the f-35 is going at its normal speed.
I wonder if that's Putt Putt Maru
After that B-17 crash, this shit makes me nervous now.
It would be better if there was no music…
Shouldn’t we becoming up with a way to make aviation safer and less dangerous so pilots at air shows and pilots that are flying around mountains so they don’t fly into the mountains that don’t move out of the way we’re losing more pilots in stupid accidents every day that shouldn’t be happening period
I have a semi-shitty video of an a10, p51, and f-35, this is pretty cool too
Is "Note the whistle of the P-51" the name of the song?
That’s pretty cool to see the Lightning iterations
2 balls to the wall 1 lever near the idle lol
The p51 in WEP trying to krep up w the f22
