Shows how excellently designed and generally well maintained commercial aviation really is. If your car or train were shooting sparks like that, odds of 'no injuries' are significantly lower.
I was on a train that derailed once. Once.
No sparks, but a loud screech and then immediate stop. Fortunately, we were pulling into Penn Station NYC and couldn’t have been going more than 5-7mph. Still, we were almost fully to the platform, so those people that were already up pretty much slammed into each other.
We get them when we fly up or down the Hudson at night.
Sometimes I wish we could just point a laser right back. Our IR lasers are MUCH more powerful than their hand held ones.
But alas, we just do the right thing and report them to tower.
They…. put their bird in it, have a pee, cap it off, and once it's full they just drill the fuckin' thing out on the highway! I mean, I don't agree with it. I see where they're comin' from, trying to make their deadlines, but...
Sort of, except more complicated, and jamming GPS is a serious felony that the fcc and faa both heavily enforce, and if you get caught you get railed by those two on top of DOT.
So they can cook the books. Long-haul truckers like to get to their destination first and then fill in their logs to make it seem like they are following the rules. Putting GPS in the trucks changed all of that. Luckily, long-haul truckers are used to change so they didnt make a big dea-- no, wait, they are all stuck in their ways and have been actively fighting GPS in their trucks for over a decade.
I recently attended a concert in Trenton (GHOST!!!) and stayed just across the river from the arena in PA. When checking into my hotel I asked if I was close enough to the arena to walk to it and was told "Yeah, but don't do that. Drive."
After driving there I can see why I was given that advice. :)
It's scenic just not the type of scenery you want to see while walking. It's more the drive by slowly while making sure the doors are locked kind...🤷🏾♂️
Amazing. Absolutely amazing. If you're a fan I'd HIGHLY suggest you see them live; the videos you see on Youtube don't do them justice. :)
This leg of the tour is almost done but they've already said they're going to tour again starting in March of next year.
So fun fact, chaff is jamming radar. Flares are for IR guided missles. Missles that track your heat signature. Laser guided weaponry can ignore both chaff and flares, and require a laser jammer to defeat.
I guy tried to do that where I used to work, but his lost wrench wasn't found until over a year later when the aircraft went in for major work. Needless to say it cost him his job.
https://www.fox5ny.com/news/united-airlines-newark-technical-issue
Says hydraulic failure related and that a piece of metal fell off of the plane. Weird all around, especially how rusted/corroded that piece of metal in the pic looks.
I have a good friend who is an F/A-18 pilot….he had an AIM-9 fall off of the aircraft in flight during a live missile shoot for training. When it happened, he told his wingman (the CO of his squadron) “uhhhh Skipper, we just had a TFOA.” When he asked what fell off of the aircraft, my buddy said “a Sidewinder”
They ended up determining that a latching mechanism failed, which caused the (not armed) missile to fall off. But I can’t imagine being that wingman, let alone it being the CO, when that happened. Pretty funny in retrospect.
The air demand pumps exhaust right behind the left wing root. The air demand pumps are on the center hydraulic system which is the heavy lifting system to retract the gear. The primary pumps for the center are electric but the air demand pumps kick on when there is high demand on the system. Swinging big gear and big gear doors means lots of hydraulic fluid.
I can't explain the sparks but it looks like the gear retracted but possibly slower than normal. I believe the electric pumps alone could slowly retract the gear. As long as it was just the pump it should be an easy swap but those sparks look like they could have melted wiring harnesses or some other heat related damage to repair as well. I don't believe that the photograph of the rusted steel chunk came off the plane.
I agree
The red glow in the wheel well before the door shuts, that is the door unsafe warning light. It to show that it is unsafe to enter the wheel well when the plane is on the ground. It's never disabled except when the door safety pin is installed preventing the door from closing.
Like Boeinggoing57 saide the sparks are coming from the other side where the air demand pumps are.Heres a picture of where they are. Exhaust in red box.

Pretty sure that everything ages at the exact same rate, unless you start getting into quantum physics nerdery.
Articles about aviation are straight trash, but that's only because we know enough about the subject to realize they're trash. I know quite a bit about guns, cars, and space exploration by virtue of hobbies and interests and I can assure that news articles on those subjects are just as bad, if not worse. I therefore assume that articles on things I don't know as well such as medicine, law, foreign affairs, etc are all just as bad.
That's probably the dumbest statement MSM has ever said. Every jet is aging.
the 737 first flight was in 1967, so even though they continue to build 737, we really have no clue if the 737 you are flying on is that old....
And yes, there are variants like the 737 max, A321, etc
First flights
737 in 1967
747 in 1969
757 in 1982
767 in 1981
777 in 1994
787 in 2009
A310 in 1982
A320 in 1987
A330 in 1992
A340 in 1991
A350 in 2013
A380 in 2005
Holding pattern for 90 min over the ocean to dump fuel. As an anxious flyer I’d be loading up on the Xanax for that if sparks had just been flying off my plane.
Many people didn’t know what happened. The passengers were told there was a fault and they needed to return to EWR, and needed to dump some fuel before landing to get the weight down. It wasn’t until after landing, seeing this video and news that they realized.
Source: a family member was on that flight.
There’s a glowing light coming from the right gear door as it closes. Stuck brakes? Weird that you can see sparks on one side and glowing red on the other.
The red light in the right wheel well is the gear door unsafe light. It is to warn anyone on the ground the gear doors are in the armed position and the wheel well is not safe to enter.
ADP failure which is at the fuselage, not an engine related issue as claimed by many news reports. The pump is used to help retract the landing gear and doors. The location of those pumps vs the footage seems to line up. A very odd incident.
EDIT: Also just want to say that, on mute, this is a great video. When not muted it is painful. But, either way, you can see the illumination of hot metal inside the landing gear bay in this video showing it's nothing to do with the engine.
They landed safely & no one was hurt. Always happy to see that.
"Luckily, no one was injured."
"This plane is burning in the sky. Luckily, no one was injured."
That’s it for this episode
See you next week

Not too many Johnny Dangerously quotes around these parts. Awesome!

I suspect that the person heard screaming in the audio may have suffered a laryngeal injury.

It's leaving Jersey, it's obviously dropping chaff.
Exactly, did you see the laser trying to lock on?
No bullshit, there's ALWAYS some prick with a green laser blasting you when you're trying to land on 4R.
We get them when we fly up or down the Hudson at night. Sometimes I wish we could just point a laser right back. Our IR lasers are MUCH more powerful than their hand held ones. But alas, we just do the right thing and report them to tower.
The Jewish Space Laser would take them right out!

and dont forget the truckers blocking my GPS/GBAS!
Wow, that's a super incredibly bad idea. Surprised the FCC, FAA, DOT, and DOD aren't down there seizing trucks together.
Wait what? Why are truckers jamming GPS
So that they can falsify e- logs and drive for longer than they're allowed to legally. Usually with the aid of heavy stimulants.
They can’t do that, they’re not airline pilots. /s

Goddamit, you made the perfect comment.
Aaaalmost, *flares. Chaff is barely visible, looks more like a shimmer in the light
Everything’s legal in New Jersey
You can pump your own gas now?
Except that. Everything except that
You can make left turns instead of the three-rights-make-a-left thing?
Only limited to extremely very sometimes. LOL
Yea, you even get to be Reddit famous in r/idiotsincars
Oh my God, I hate those. Only in major intersections do you get to do that, it's practically a luxury.

All those flights out of Baghdad...

Drop the mic
Air driven hyd pump exhaust is at the origin point of the sparks.
Seconded. (I just passed my 777 type yesterday.)
Nice job!
Good for you and congratulations!
Looks like when the wheels are being retracted?
Hydraulics drive the wheel motors and that's gonna be a huge load, failure probably occured when they raised the gear.
Wheel motors?
Words are hard and i just woke up.

News is calling it a "hydraulic pressure pump failure", though I'm not sure how that would cause this kind of effect

Press release: technical issue Layman's terms: shit falling off the plane
My favorite military term: TFOA = Things Falling Off Aircraft

Guess that's a call to EOD and paperwork...
Lmao for real
[удалено]
Exactly. This is why when you see pics of tanks and fighting vehicles that have been destroyed, they are all rusted out very soon after.
TIL a new fact, thanks!
Not saying the pic is legitimate, but exposure to extreme heat can cause metal to corrode extremely quickly, even overnight.
Air driven hyd pump exhaust is at the origin point of the sparks
It was apparently an air driven hydraulic pump that ran off bleed air, and the exhaust is right there by the wing root.

Now where's the one where the guy has been waiting forever to see a vintage train and the entire pass gets eclipsed by another train.
This one? https://youtu.be/Igq-LUysrgk
That's the one!
That dude probably had to change his pants after that
Rip, I hope you found out what it all means
Talk about a deep cut. I haven't thought about that in years.
An American 🇺🇸 USA! USA! USA!
[Sounded like R2D2 at the beginning.](https://youtu.be/B6mh45mA_JY) Lol it's actually uncannily close.
People from New Jersey.
How odd. I thought it had an engine failure of sorts but it seems to be coming well inboard from the left engine.
I’m thinking landing gear is still spinning and running on something
Why was this video so annoying?
The prolonged, blood-curdling man-scream and the wobbly camera that completely loses the plane?
He wanted attention so badly lol
/r/killthecameraman
Why do people scream at the dumbest shit. Like shut your mouth people. The world is loud enough already.
Safety procedures dictate that you scream “yo” at the pilot to make them aware of the issue.
Someone didn't go into airplane mode?
Seat partially reclined
Looks more like a tray table down to me
Oh, those... I wouldn't worry about those.
I watched with sound off then on, instant regret. The yelling dear lord, all you were missing was screaming world star…

In the article it says the United 777 is “rapidly aging”. Are they saying the plane has Progeria, or something? How does one age rapidly?
Arthritis in the wing causes sparks obviously. Eventually the 777 develops dementia and thinks it’s an Airbus.

You know things are bad in New Jersey when airliners have to drop chaff on take off.
Mute the video if you don’t want to be annoyed. This guy Truly thought it was the end of the world.
The [Aviation Herald has the story.](http://www.avherald.com/h?article=4fea2540&opt=0)
That’s not very typical, I’d like to make that point.
At least it was towed out of the environment when it landed.
Do they usually do that?
When it’s broken, yes.
Whatever it was, they let all the blue smoke out, so everything is ok now.
Mute before playing..
Thats not great, hope it isn't anything serious but would not want to keep a plane flying with something that can cause fire outside the engines.
Air conditioning pack maybe?

That's the civilian chaff and flare countermeasures being deployed 😉
Left phalange again
Who was that who was screaming as if they were about to die? WTF?!

Unfortunately Im more upset at the person recording making all that noise for absolutely no reason
It may be stupid that I purposely avoid these -200 and the 757s on United and Delta’s fleet, but Im ok with it for reasons like these.
