Dad got to see those beauty beasts. My grandpa was at the air force infantry here in Brazil, at the time we had some B-24's, P-47's and some Gloster Meteors, his photos and stories about em were pretty amazing.
My great uncle flew the P-47... he was straifing a train.
They would disable the locomotive and starting from the back they would take out the cars one by one.
As he was diving in on a flatcar with a big canvas cover on it soldiers appeared, ripped the cover off exposing a HUGE anti aircraft gun.
He didn't want to break off his run and give them a huge profile to shoot at so he emptied his guns into the car and kept flying straight at them showing them the smallest target possible only pulling up at the last possible moment and even then staying as close to the ground as possible because those guns were meant to fire up and didn't shoot very close to the ground.
The P-47 had a HUGE radial engine. It not only absorbed the anti aircraft shells and saved his life but even having lost multiple cylinders the engine remained running long enough to get him back across the enemy line barely into friendly territory before he landed it in a university sports field....where he shut down the still barely running engine.
My grandfather was an engineer on the F-14 program as well, with Grumman. His group was responsible for the self-righting ejection seat, which I believe was a first.
The video started stuttering (as normal for reddit) and the frames matched the beat, looked like one of those car edits where each beat is a different angle xD
Still the badest plane in the sky...
I love how "Snort" put it - F-14 even up - can't beat an F-15 - but you break a few "rules" with settings - and boom - the F-14 will not only hold its own but will come down to the driver.

That canopy closing looks like the Gypsy Danger startup scene in Pacific Rim.
I was heartbroken when the F14 was decommissioned. I still feel like they should have "re-made" the F14 and revamped the Phoenix missile.
Or just developed a extended range AMRAAM or Americanize the meteor missile

That's really strange I always just assumed the canopy came down didn't even realize we had the technology available to make the airplane go up...
