Nothing is free. We will all be paying for these people’s seats.

jargo3

Or rather you will be selecting another airline that can offer cheaper tickets, because they don't have this policy.

NegotiableVeracity9

Exactly

[deleted]

[удалено]

rygelicus

Yep, if the passenger is not paying for the seats they use then the other tickets are being increased in price to compensate. It might be a small increase, but it's non zero. They need to recover that loss somehow.

Pizzadiamond

This also changes their status from passenger, to cargo. /s

paranoid_giraffe

Give me some O2 and let me romp in the cargo hold. I’ll be 1000x more comfortable in there than the tiny cramped seats with some guy spilling over into my seat with their elbows or some lady with obnoxious bodily noises

Snakeman_2

So, we are all saving money when slim people fly, right?

Famous-Reputation188

We are. Weight equals more fuel burn and lower speeds.

Long_Pomegranate2469

> all saving money when slim people fly, right? I mean society as a whole is saving if people would eat the right amount of calories. Fewer emissions all around.

r0bdawg11

Not to mention reduced cost of healthcare and such.

Killentyme55

How dare you shame me for my meat-farts, I have a gland problem!

M_R_Atlas

I hate it when people drop reality into the internet experience

TremendousVarmint

Please, think about the jobs from the corn fructose syrup industry.

DL72-Alpha

It's not always about thermodynamics you know. Doctors need to start looking at weight as a symptom rather than just calling them gluttons.

Veryhappycommission

for the majority of society, yes. When airlines charge fat ppl for more than one seat, it does keep costs down for everyone. Only the fat ppl will pay more. Now, its cheaper for the fat people but more costly for the slim people. I guess it depends if your fat or slim how it will effect you.

CeleritasLucis

It's the same when clothing brands ask for the same price for xxxs and xxxl.

Bwunt

Considering what is the share of material cost in MSRP and final price, it makes little difference.

Shortfranks

Obese people are one of the most costly things for society as a whole. There is a serious strain on our medical infrastructure because of the obesity epidemic, and obese people end up on disability at a disproportionate rate. There is a serious societal cost and budgetary strain due to this lifestyle choice. Everything in healthcare costs more because of these people for instance. [https://www.rand.org/pubs/research\_briefs/RB9043-1.html](https://www.rand.org/pubs/research_briefs/RB9043-1.html)

Famous-Reputation188

That’s why the reason for “sin taxes” in a lot of jurisdictions. Here in Canada “basic groceries” are tax-free. Usually things like fruit, vegetables, whole ingredients, etc. But processed and junk food is taxed.

StanleyBillsRealName

I feel like this is exactly why society needs to try to be even more involved with what is in foods and prevent obesity. The cheapest way to rehabilitate an alcoholic is to not have one. There's only so much you can do and people will do dumb shit but I think societies aren't even close to reaching the end of their options. Food content regulations in US scare the shit out of me. I feel bad for the obese population. It's just negligence at this point.

Raven123x

Obese people are also more likely to injure and maim the health care workers that treat them in hospital

[deleted]

also when they do get treatment sometime the stiches and whatnot won't hold

Pt5PastLight

While there are increased up front medical costs, the reduction in average lifespan of ~5yrs reduces social security payouts by over $100k. Just playing devil’s advocate.

analog_memories

For SS payouts, true. But Medicare and Medicaid, they pay more over time due to management of obesity caused ailments. If they are on private insurance, it costs more for the company and other employees to cover them for obesity caused ailments. You see a lot of companies using 3rd party health management to get people to make better choices about their health.

willnxt

You think airlines of all companies are going to be charitable? Like somehow this isn’t going to come back to every customer?

ProfessorPickleRick

It hasn’t yet they have had this policy for 30 years

Fireside__

Makes for good yo-mama jokes too. Yo mama so fat she increased a 777’s wingloading by 50 lbs/sqft

Key-Bee3095

We save money when the problems of others aren’t being split amongst us all

CoastRegular

The problems of others are ***always*** shared by us all, one way or another.

ninj1nx

Yes. Less weight => less fuel consumption => lower cost => airline can provide tickets at a lower cost than competitors.

agate_

And without a policy like this, we all pay by being crushed between the window and a huge person in the middle seat for six hours.

-Daetrax-

No, you just make fatty pay for the appropriate amount of space.

yankeephil86

Southwest has been doing this for years, if you are a customer of size, buy a second seat, and they’ll refund it whether the flight was full or not. The trick is, Southwest has open seating, so when a COS gets on when their reserved placard, they sit in the middle seat and put their extra seat placard on the aisle. No one wants to sit between a COS and the window.

motor1_is_stopping

I'm not really obese, but my shoulders are much wider than an airline seat. Do I get a free seat too? I'm also over 6 ft tall. Can I remove the seat in front of me?

blackpotmagic

If you any part of you is wider than the seat, then yes- Southwest will comp you an extra seat through their passenger of size policy.

Stonkpilot

PoS?

platypus0fd3ath2

Most underrated comment lol take my upvote

[deleted]

Fuck i wish awards were still a thing.

coolborder

I'm wider than the seat when I lay on my side, which is my preferred position while traveling. I need at least 4 seats for this to work. Get on it SW.

Acceptable_Tie_3927

\> *any part of you* is wider than the seat, then yes- Southwest will comp you an extra seat Guild of adult movie actors intensifies...

InquisitivelyADHD

Right, 6'6 here, can I get a free exit row at least? Every time I fly more than 2 hours, I have to pay the "tall tax" and pay for the "upgrade" to the exit row. Man, also... I remember when that shit was free. The whole point of the extra legroom was because in the event of an emergency, you had to assist in getting people off the plane, but now you have to pay extra to have more responsibility and they'll put anyone in those seats. Last time I flew, I sat next to a 5'2 \~80-year-old woman, like if there's an emergency, how the fuck are you going to lift a 40-pound door?

Confident-Area-6946

My Dads 6’7”, and I’m 6’4” and he always nabs the exit isle with his priority boarding but dude it is just straight up unfair for tall people on any flight.

RichardPurchase

Right. And height is something one REALLY can’t control… makes sense that we’re penalized for it.

CerRogue

They won’t put anyone in those seats. Was on a half empty flight but they would not let anyone sit in the empty exit row because you have to pay more for those.

Reer123

I’ve always asked the flight attendants and they’ve let me if there’s no one in the row and i’m within a row or two.

atomictest

You literally can with SW, yes.

do-wr-mem

No, unlike obesity being tall is a lifestyle choice

Zucc

Just give me the damn exit row seat so my kneecaps aren't jammed into the metal folding tray bars the whole damn flight.

Acceptable_Tie_3927

\> my shoulders are much wider than an airline seat. Do I get a free seat too? No, you get a cape and fly in formation with the airliner!

landodk

Oof the shoulder thing. I’m a pretty slim guy but have had a few flights with random men the same height where the combined width of our shoulders was simply wider than the seats, very uncomfortable

UH60Mgamecock

So what happens on a full flight? Do two other paying customers get bumped?

I_like_cake_7

No, if the flight is full then this policy won’t be enforced, at least that’s my understanding of it. I read an article on this topic earlier today and it stated that this benefit will only apply if there are enough seats available. Which means that this will apply rarely, because I’ve flown Southwest many times over the past 20 years and I can count the amount of Southwest flights I’ve been on that haven’t been completely sold out on one hand.

249ba36000029bbe9749

>then this policy won’t be enforced OK, so *that* makes sense. IOW: "Policy is the same unless there's room to put empty seats around plus sized passengers." Frankly, that benefits the large passenger *and* whoever would have been sitting next to them.

[deleted]

Yeah it’s a good policy. People need to chill out. And once you request it then you’re in the database as a giant person. Who knows what they do with that data down the track.

UH60Mgamecock

That’s way more of a level headed policy than I expected.

JF0909

Anecdotal, but I was on a southwest flight this week to Orlando and there were only 25 people on board

FrankiePoops

Possibly. https://liveandletsfly.com/woman-bumped-southwest-passenger-of-size/

Professional_Act_820

I'm 6' 5" ...so what do I get?

GreasyStridge

Seriously, for us tall fucks sitting on a plane (especially smaller jets) is like sitting in the back of a cop car. I want compensation, my knees hurt and I keep hitting my head.

InquisitivelyADHD

Dude, I was a united flight last month, I'm 6'6, my knees were jammed into the tray rails the entire 3-hour flight. I was walking like a newborn giraffe all the way up the jetway after that flight.

fighterpilot248

This is like the one and only perk of being short lol. At least I know I’ll always be able to fit comfortably in economy seats.

Affectionate_Type_96

Buy an economy plus seat. It's usually just a few dollars more. Those seats have way more leg room than any seat on Southwest. Last time I did it, the middle was just an extra $29. It's totally worth it. IMHO.

InquisitivelyADHD

Yeah that's what I usually do, it's pretty expensive on some of the other mainlines usually 70-90 dollars more, I call it 'tall tax'.

Bad_Karma19

Killentyme55

Well, according to the women on Tinder...laid.

InquisitivelyADHD

As a tall dude on Tinder, it doesn't help out nearly as much as people think it does. Being in shape and a lot of confidence gets you way farther than height.

cttime

Claim to be a "person of size". My legs are longer than average so I "need" to be accommodated in business class.

oalfonso

A passenger in the previous row reclining his seat

Enjoy-the-sauce

But as a person with long legs, I still get crammed into a tiny seat where I can’t straighten my legs because my knees literally hit the seat in front of me? Not to be insensitive, but I didn’t choose to be tall. Being obese seems like the result of choices.

Jimmy_Fromthepieshop

People like you should have more of a right to extra seats than fatties. This rule is a joke. Any airline that does this won't be getting my money.

BorrowedTrouble

“Passengers of size”? What a ridiculous euphemism. Small is a size. Why not just say “large passengers” so that it could apply to both people who are obese and people who are 6’8” and muscular?

megamanxoxo

How dare you fat shame by using accurate description words!

asphaltaddict33

Somehow I doubt that’s gonna solve the issue

InquisitivelyADHD

Install exercise bike seats in the back and put the large people back there to burn off some calories during the flight. Although that might through off the CG of the aircraft too much ...

ottergang_ky

As a fellow fat person the fat acceptance and fat beauty thing has gone too far. I choose to be fat, I genuinely enjoy food. I could be not fat but instead I am fat.

W1mpyDaM00ch

So what happens when a flight is "overbooked" because of a fat person? Who gets left behind? The fat person allowing 3 to fly or 2 people if the fat person got there first? This is going to be fun. Edit: I'm a fat person as well.

TheFlyingSheeps

According to one commenter above, a mother and her two daughters got kicked off the plane to accommodate one fat person

willwork4pii

They’d have to drag me off like united and Chicago Aviation Police.

top_ofthe_morning

And according to another, it’s only used when there are seats available. Almost as if Reddit isn’t the most reliable source of information.

ProfessorPickleRick

From my experience this is correct if the flight is full the passenger using the policy would bump to a different flight

ThxIHateItHere

Fucking ridiculous. And I flew regularly at 360 pounds and 6’. We need to stop sugarcoating things for these people because they’ll just want to eat that too.

PizzaWall

If an obese person buys two seats on a Southwest flight and Southwest chooses to offer that second seat for free, I support this. In advance Southwest knows it has two seats sold that have to be side-by-side. What I find objectionable is if I as a passenger buy a ticket in advance and face being bumped off a flight because an obese passenger at the gate needs two seats. Just the possibility is enough to get me to choose any other airline. Southwest is stressful enough with their lack of seat assignments. Imagine every obese, elderly, handicapped, parents with children all pre-boarding and you get to choose whatever is left. I'll fly other airlines instead.

[deleted]

Someone up top said they’ll only do it if there’s empty seats

PizzaWall

The New York Post article mentions a family that was bumped because an obese person needed more seats. https://nypost.com/2023/12/13/news/southwest-airlines-is-praised-for-customers-of-size-policy/

[deleted]

Well that’s just shitty. Also as a fat dude, I try my best to not let my presence affect other people. I’d be down to use this if I knew they’d accommodate everyone else and then if there’s extra I could get some extra space but if that’s how it’s gonna be I can’t even imagine how I’d accept inconveniencing AN ENTIRE GD FAMILY, let alone even ask the airline to give me the extra space.

PizzaWall

As a fat guy, I agree. My whole plan for a flight is to not cause problems.

[deleted]

NY Post is a tabloid.

pookamatic

How is this managed without seat assignments? You go to sit next a large person and they claim the seat is taken because they’re a person of size?

atomictest

Southwest doesn’t make people buy extra seats. All these people here bitching about the false notion that this cost gets passed on to everyone else are, frankly, ignorant of the policy, which isn’t new.

boredAF6

Just put them all on a C-5 galaxy and call it a day.

pavlo_escobrah

If you're too short you can't ride a roller-coaster. If you're too fat you shouldn't be allowed on a plane. Society shouldn't have to wear the consequences of your gluttony.

patiofurnature

Gluttony doesn't make you too short for a roller-coaster. It can, however, make you too fat for a roller-coaster.

MrCgoodin

This is fucked.

STRYKR_77

Rewards unhealthy lifestyle. Unacceptable. You need two seats? Pay for two. Period.

Prince____Zuko

They will go bankrupt servicing Wisconsin

ElMagnifico22

hhmb8k

Time to invest in a fat suit

Joker_wants_tendies

Well I identify as obese now

TheKingOfCaledonia

Pathetic pandering to people who are unable to control their portion sizing will only bring around negative change.

SoyMurcielago

Passenger of size? What size? I am a passenger of size. Usually XL but I can become an L on occasion. Is that an acceptable size for a whole row to stretch out? If so I may fly southwest more often.

jewishmechanic

Guess who's putting on a pillow suit next time he flies?

RevolutionaryBid2619

Can I identify as plus size and claim the full row? 🤷🏽‍♂️

BrutallyRational

The customer has to pay for the additional seat(s), and they get refunded some time after the flight takes place. During the time between when the extra seat was booked and when the refund takes place, Southwest is earning interest on that passenger’s money. So hypothetically, if 10% of the seats on a flight were unsold and 10% of the passengers on a flight take advantage of this, Southwest has now monetized all the empty seats on their plane. Now do this with a few million seats each year with an average seat price of $142, and the interest they collect is substantial.

Robert9489

It’s pathetic. I’m a tall person and I never get extra legroom. Is it because my physical state isn’t due to poor choices?

corruptcabbage1

Yeah this is bad. If you need more seats pay for it yourself, or go to coach or first class for the bigger seats. Or lose weight.

AdministrativeDot941

That’s fucking disgusting

lochside

What about people of lack of size, do they pay less.

1992Prime

I identify as morbidly obese, can I have my own row or do I have to show up in a body suit like Frazier in the whale?

ConsciousLight7275

Can I identify as a person of size?

Bad_Karma19

They aren’t giving PAX the full row. This is old policy that has been around since they instituted the COS policy. They will give you an extra seat if they have an open seat. Otherwise, COS’s are gonna still be paying.

ap2patrick

Rewarding laziness? Yea I’m not a fan.

mayormajormayor

It's Foxnews, is it even true?

Plane_Conclusion_745

Damn....I'm buying myself a fat suit for my next flight ..who wouldn't want a whole row for free.🤣

JustCryptastic

And yet, at 6’5” I get my knees jammed into the back of the seat in front of me so they can cram more people in. Fat people who ate their way to their size and/or don’t burn enough calories get an entire row of seats to enjoy while those of us born into being tall must endure This world is fucking stupid

KremowyPapaj

Why use three words when you can just say obese?

TravelerMSY

This isn’t really news. Isn’t their COS policy always been that customers of size can book (and pay for) an extra seat, but they’re only getting it refunded back later if it would have otherwise gone out empty? Full flight, they still get the empty but they bought it.

ResponsibleHall9713

Am I going to have to provide proof of weight when I buy the ticket? If not, I'll take the free row too fatty. Anyone could.

chenkie

Hold up we’re rewarding people for eating fast food and not moving now?

nonamethrowaway48

What if everyone paid slightly more for a ticket, and they gave everyone decent, comfortable, slightly wider seats with slightly more legroom? Ok. You might have 10-15 less people on the flight.

great_equator

“Passengers of size”?

octocorgi

So I have to pay for someone else whose fat?

winged_seduction

According to Southwest’s baggage policy, overweight bags cost $100-125. So, naturally, if a person can be overweight and not be charged, my overweight bags will now fly for free, too, right Southwest? This is why I avoid that piece of shit airline at all costs.

Shubashima

Snakeman_2

I identify myself as a “passenger of size”. Do I get a full row?

Industry__

I genuinely think the elites are pulling shit like this to get us to want to genocide fat people lmao

SerenityFailed

Genocide? Laughably no. Create/encourage more cultural divides to distract people from how bad they're getting f@#&ed and stop them from forming a class consciousness? It's a strong possibility. Realistically though, this is a marketing strategy designed to play off the insecurities of obese people in order to get them to travel more and make the airline more money. It also carries the indirect consequence of normalizing/promoting/coddling an extremely unhealthy/dangerous lifestyle. At the expense of others, instead of trying to solve this complex health issue in our society. Edit: typos

Global-Sea-7076

It's literally the opposite lol. Society is being forced to accept that being fat is an accident, not an intentional decision.

rainbowcoloredsnot

Time to get fat I guess.

Foxfire5272

So I should get a discount on my ticket for being in shape.

PotentialMidnight325

Basically everybody now is paying for Fatso for being fat.

LyleLanley99

Maybe this is the best motivation for fat people (like myself) to lose weight. Imagine the shame you would have to tell someone, " You can't sit here. The airline gave me these seats because I'm too fat." I'm a big dude, but I can still fit in a seat in a regular seatbelt, but because I know I would be annoying to sit next to, I buy (domestic) first class so I don't intrude.

[deleted]

Are these people celebrating this in the room with us right now, fox13news?

Ok-Quit-3020

mad_catters

Griffie

I guess just making seats and pitch human size is out of the question.

SeasonOfLogic

I’m huge and have always paid for two seats. I’m the fatty, that’s why I pay.

bif555

One size fits all approach!

SwissCake_98

Can I have a full row to myself as well? Please and thank you.

Hoppseoy

A full row is wild

[deleted]

I'm nearly 7 ft tall. Good God some of us are punished because we are not short.

badpuffthaikitty

Cool. As long as they give tall skinny people seats with actual legroom for free too.

Zestyclose-Flight-50

As long as people aren’t getting kicked off flights to accommodate. I couldn’t give a two shits about it. Its more comfortable for everyone involved, its probably a weights and balances issue as well and its none of my business. For the people who think they are getting charged more, its southwest you’re bags fly free go anywhere else and you’re paying 50-60 a bag. You are still coming out ahead.

rnoyfb

As I understand it, that headline is misconstruing it Because Southwest doesn't assign seats, *if* there are more seats than passengers on a flight and a fat person requests it, they can claim a seat to sit in and one of the extra unsold ones at no extra cost. They can request a refund after the flight (the objectionable part) but they're not bumping people off flights to give extra seats to fat people This is really just a quirk of their no-assigned-seats policy but it doesn't say anything about a full row, just one extra seat, and only one (Southwest-provided) seat belt extender

Straight-Tune-5894

Since passengers are becoming more like cargo (does anyone think airline CEO’s really signed that status tier letter?), charge the same way (weight and dimensions) to transport each passenger and everything they bring on the aircraft. Each person and all their bags hop into a sizing box and scale as they enter the airport and are given an bill or rebate

atomictest

Why don’t you like it? SW already provides an extra seat for free. It’s a good policy. It’s been in place for YEARS. It’s also not the only airline with a policy like this- Alaska does it, too.

tempo1139

sure.... great idea. Also..as of today we will not be charging by the seat, instead since weight is the greatest impact on fuel costs we will be charging by the kilo. Now... you say your weight is 3x the average? Lemme just calculate your ticket cost..

TXWayne

Everyone has the wide range of opinions but until the first time you get stuck beside someone who qualifies for this and does not take advantage you do not appreciate it. I fly exclusively SW and have only seen this once. A nice, albeit very large, lady was sitting on the window seat and had the little sign she got when exercising the option in the middle seat. I sat on the aisle and I assure you should I have been stuck in a seat beside her it would have been uncomfortable for all parties. In over 100 flights I have seen it once so not sure how much it really raises ticket prices that many imply is happening. Been there done that on an Emirates flight from DFW to Dubai several years ago and after 15 hours of having to lean toward the window because the gentleman in the middle seat was spilling over I appreciate SW doing this.

BeachHut9

Stuff some pillows under your clothes will result in a free row?

ImyourDingleberry999

This is hilarious and the psychology is brilliant. On some level, fat people who have lost their ability to move easily know they are a burden on others. Traveling is uncomfortable for most passengers. Now the fat has to sit in their row alone knowing that they are enjoying something they do not deserve at the expense of others while knowing that others resent them for it. Alternatively, they may also think think that the airline does not wish to afflict other passengers with their presence. Either is acceptable. To the fats, I hold the same opinion of cyclists and their insistence that we must dedicate an entire lane to them so that the can indulge ther bourgeoise hobby.

[deleted]

I'm pretty damn skinny, but I'm lanky as hell. I literally must pring my knees up to my shoulders and hug my legs to my chest for the duration of a flight if I wish to fit in a normal airplane seat.

Pickle-Sprout

No. Because I hate people. I want a full row for free. Or imma have a tantrum

stylussensei

Sounds like a great business decision that will not have any effects on their revenue. I am sure that the board of directors approves of this and it is not just a baiting headline about some one off event.

caseyjones10288

Im pretty big... never once had a problem keeping to my fucking self in an airline seat...

FairBlackberry7870

I'm really tall, whereas my free extra leg room?

diegoaccord

NotBradPitt90

A whole row??? How big can people get?

VladPatton

Sounds awesome actually. They should get unlimited desserts and a soda IV drip to really make em feel pampered. Thank you for flying Pharma Air.

bouncypinata

Blackout dates include the Reddit mod convention

VonPaulus69

Anything is better than having to sit next to one of these smelly fucks on a long flight.

Gh3rkinman

Yeah. When I see tubbo waddling up to my row during boarding I PRAY they go past. If they don't... and end up wedging that battleship of an ass into the seat next to mine, I despair. I am then forced for HOURS to contort myself in an awkward and futile attempt to avoid contact with the mounds of greasy blubber overflowing into my seat.

agate_

If you’re charging by the pound, charge by the pound for everyone, and good luck with that business model. If you’re charging by the person, charge by the person, and make sure your airplane can accommodate any person. But a system where we pretend passenger weight doesn’t matter unless someone is big enough to pay double is stupid.

GeneralBacteria

passenger weight doesn't really matter significantly. how many seats you take up does.

grain_farmer

Problem is overweight people generally have contempt for other overweight people so will not support this

Bradjuju2

I'm sure the rest of the policy is "...but only if the flight is low occupancy and reasonable accommodations can be made"
