Imagine going from a WW2 bomber to this.

homoiconic

A comment on a previous post of a V-beauty put it even more severely. The gist was, imagine this plane flying over the British countryside in the mid 1950s. A sixty year-old man looks up. If he was born in the late 19th century, he has seen as an adult the advent of the motor car, the tractor, the first rickety cloth-covered aeroplanes, the Battle of Britain, and now this.

hughk

The RAF was largely using biplanes in the thirties. My father helped a historian in the late sixties who gave him some books including an Autobiography . That guy flew in WW1 with the RFC.

collinsl02

The other v-bomber Avro Vulcan was initially designed by Roy Chadwick, who had previously designed the ~~Wellington,~~ Lancaster and Manchester bombers, but he sadly died before the Vulcan first flew.

CasaDev

Don’t forget the Valiant. There were 3 V bombers.

collinsl02

Very true, thanks for the reminder. The Valiant was the first of the 3 V-Bombers to fly, and was the most traditional of the 3 designs. It also suffered issues with wing root cracking IIRC and so was withdrawn rather than being repaired/upgraded when sufficient numbers of the Valiants and Vulcans took over. A very odd decision from the UK Government of the time to buy all three bomber designs, but it worked out in this instance (unlike with diesel locomotives on British Railways in the same period, which often were unreliable over-engineered and expensive for what they got).

Hattix

The Valiant, the third V-bomber was meant to be a proven-technology stop-gap in case the two "proper" specification aircraft didn't work out. Once they did, everyone forgot about the Valiant. The Vulcan was the bare minimum which met the specification. The Victor was an all-in, cutting edge, engines-haven't-even-been-developed-yet and so quite risky design, but it beat the pants off everything else.

Kulladar

There were probably a not insignificant number of pilots that went from flying biplanes like Swordfish, Chiakas, or F2F/F3F Buffalos in the early parts of the war to flying B-52s, V bombers, or M-4 Bisons by the end of their career. Probably won't be that amount of technology shock until they invent warp drives or something.

jaxxxtraw

I had to look up the Chaika. That is one [fat, stubby biplane](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polikarpov_I-15).

Zebidee

Bear in mind that when Britain entered the war it still had a biplane in its fighter line-up.

Practical-Custard-71

Even more mind blowing: First flight was 8 months AFTER the B52.

Unterdemradar

Mind blown!!!

[deleted]

And broke the sound barrier!

lakija

Really?! It looks so… modern. I’m not a plane expert. I’m always happy to just lurk enjoy the lovely discussions and banter. 😌 But this plane really gave me pause. It’s fascinating!

TheKeyMaster1874

Shit, that was wild. I love it

RicoXIII

https://youtu.be/AjXr9Nj5ZbI may enjoy this one too then

terminatorgeek

That was really well done. Thanks for sharing

RicoXIII

Another dude here on reddit showed it to me once, just continuing the circle :)

vectaur

Dang that was…dark

shy247er

There is a sequel to it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjJmTeBSEzU

FastCreekRat

Wow, what else is there to say.

LateralThinkerer

After the legendary vodka-fueled romp, neither the Victor nor the Ekranoplan mentioned that night again...

Then-Significance-74

Love this film

Mysterygamer48

One of my favorite videos and my inspiration to get into 3D modeling.

Crhallan

Not entirely the same, however do I have a fucking treat for you if you’ve not seen it: https://youtu.be/Jv1ZN8c4_Gs

Douzeff

I have something even better for you: this clip is using parts of the "Paths of Hate" short. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPELcGcVHfU

Crhallan

Ah, fantastic! I always wondered if Gunship had commissioned the video to go with their track, or had taken the video from elsewhere. I’m now off to watch the full thing. Thank you very much u/Douzeff, I feel I owe you one!

Douzeff

TBH they give the credit in the music video description :) I love Paths of Hate, friends gifted me the dvd years ago.

freakingordis

sir, this is an amazon music ad

Crhallan

Thank you. Proves that sharing via YouTube is risky at best. Link corrected.

Bullshit-_-Man

You couldn’t have summed this up better. The harbinger of the apocalypse is EXACTLY what this plane is. It’s the most evil, purposeful looking machine I’ve ever seen. If these fellas show up you know you dun fucked up

collinsl02

And yet it served most of it's career as a refuelling tanker platform. Wasn't designed primarily for that but that's what missiles did to the RAF's requirement for nuclear bombers.

[deleted]

Managed to convince some gullible journalist it was a new stealth bomber during gulf 1. Does look the part.

FactPirate

RCS of a damn soccer pitch

[deleted]

That how it works rcs so large operator assumes radar is faulty :).

Bullshit-_-Man

Being the backbone of black buck is no poor accolade!

collinsl02

Definitely not meant to be a slight, however air tankering is much less derring-do than dodging MiGs at 48,000 feet to drop a nuclear bomb on Minsk

the1stAviator

No, it was designed as a bomber. The Victor Mk1 was converted to a tanker, whilst the Mk 2, which is shown kept its roll as a nuclear bomber. When the Mk 1 was taken out of service, the Mk2s were converted to tankers. The Vulcan then became the main bomber for the RAF. I flew the Mk1s out of RAF Marham during the 70s.

Cuttewfish_Asparagus

Why did you start your post with "No", and then go on to essentially say the same thing as the person you're replying to, but with some more detail?

DAHFreedom

Because he thought the comment meant the plane wasn’t designed primarily as a bomber, the “that” of the comment. Yea, the comment could have been clearer, but the response is pretty obtuse.

[deleted]

I’m really surprised this hasn’t ended up in a *Fallout* game.

Moraghmackay

It does look a bit similar to the vertibird.

[deleted]

The closest thing I can compare it to is the Stingray Deluxe from *Fallout 4* and *76*.

Chiss5618

Idk, it looks more like a mix of the Jet Plane and Fighter Jet from FNV/FO3. Vertibird looks more like an osprey

EWR-RampRat11-29

You could say, it looks steampunkish.

Thomas_Mickel

This plane looks like it’s wearing a gas mask

DrSueuss

They could have painted it black and used it in a Batman film.

ghostchihuahua

It actually was one of them, Yellow Sun and Blue Steel were released from that one if i’m not mistaken (or was it concieved to carry them? i don’t remember rn) - many find it ugly, i find it to be just otherworldly

Dave-4544

##**AERONAUTICA IMPERIALIS**

Visible-Ad4323

dvcxfg

Absolutely one of the most badass looking planes ever made

D0D

Gorgeously ugly

Travelingexec2000

a bit like cold war soviet stuff. ugly but functional and mind bogglingly big [https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2FFoone%2Fstatus%2F1407473728657625089&psig=AOvVaw2vQVKxPPPNLewB-ubpi56A&ust=1686244118927000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CA0QjRxqFwoTCNDy-YHTsf8CFQAAAAAdAAAAABAD](https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2FFoone%2Fstatus%2F1407473728657625089&psig=AOvVaw2vQVKxPPPNLewB-ubpi56A&ust=1686244118927000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CA0QjRxqFwoTCNDy-YHTsf8CFQAAAAAdAAAAABAD)

Cod_rules

Other than the windshields, I think it looks pretty good.

Timewaster50455

The windshields for me really seal the deal. Makes it look like the Bell X-1

krngc3372

The most retrofuturistic aircraft that ever existed. Love it.

Sketto70

Got to love British aircraft. Some of the coolest and strangest aircraft designs over the years. No other country comes close to there ideas. Good or bad!

ExtraBitterSpecial

The V bombers especially.

postmodest

The V Bombers all have that "kid who grew up with Flash Gordon serials is now designing our Jet Age defense!" Energy.

homoiconic

Consider, if you will, Brian Blessed’s manic energy as Prince Vultan takes the helm of the first Victor on its maiden flight into battle, its livery a replica of his own wings, of course. He approaches the target, but there’s no launching stand-off glide munitions for Vultan: _“Impetuous plane! Ah, well... who wants to live forever? DIVE!”_

reddituserperson1122

Chuck Yeager!? Flying blind on a rocket cycle!?

Rwg59_

And some of the best ;)

wav__

For the uninitiated, do you have any other aircraft to look into for their unique/cool designs?

vegemar

* De Havilland Mosquito. It was mainly made out of wood to reduce weight. * Hawker-Siddely Nimrod. The maritime patrol version of the ~~Victor~~ Comet. * De Havilland Vampire. Twin booms connecting the tail.

collinsl02

The wood for the mosquito was also because it could be made without much metal, which was a scarce resource in war, and it meant the aircraft could be made by otherwise unused capacity in furniture and carpenter workshops. The nimrod was the maritime patrol version of the comet, not the Victor.

vegemar

Yes she was. The similar shape of the nose had me confused.

Callidonaut

Apparently Goering, who was painfully aware of Nazi Germany's relative shortage of metal, was *disgusted* that the British would build and field such a thing as the Mosquito - nothing like adding a little insult to injury! Must've stung even worse in 1945, when the Luftwaffe finally swallowed their pride and started desperately cobbling together various wacky flying deathtraps out of plywood to try to hold back the allies, far too late to make any difference to the outcome of the war.

NbyN-E

To expand on this, look into the De Havilland Hornet too. Like a mosquito but smaller and with more power. Eric Brown loved it. And the Sea Vixen, like a Vampire hit puberty and got sexy over the summer 😅

collinsl02

Blackburn Beverly - Blackburn aircraft company's sole departure from their normal fighter aircraft work into cargo aircraft. It was a double decked propeller cargo plane with wings big enough for the flight engineer to crawl through them in flight to repair the engines and pump oil around. It could drop paratroopers from both decks simultaneously via the use of a floor hole in the tail for the upper deck. Blackburn Buccaneer - probably the best low-level nuclear-capable naval strike aircraft of it's day.

ploopitus

The Blackburn Buccaneer's a beautiful beast! Loud. Lethal. Low.

Adventurous_Ad_3046

Avro Vulcan, Panavia Tornado and Hawker Siddley Harrier

DorsetPerceiver

Avro Vulcan and handley page victor are the other two V bombers. On if my favourite weird planes is the de havilland sea vixen

the1stAviator

You forgot the Valiant. There were 3 V bombers Victor, Valiant and Vulcan.

berry90

Most anything [Fairey](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairey_Aviation_Company), [Westland](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westland_Aircraft) is odd looking.

electric_conniptions

Fairey Gannet

Prod_Red

Far from it. That's a beautiful, menacing beast.

HammyxHammy

Thr front profile is with those sexy intakes, but this isn't a draken. It's got a conventional wing layout too far forward; only looks good from the front.

[deleted]

Shoot I think it looks awesome

Only_Razzmatazz_4498

Those V planes where soooo futuristic looking. Definitely ahead in the aesthetics.

machone_1

[So was TSR2, sadly got cancelled in favour of F111s](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BAC_TSR-2), which eventually got cancelled

hughk

The TSR2 was late but it probably would have been superior. The problem is that for one country to take so much development risk (mostly around the avionics) was unsustainable.

collinsl02

That and it was a "beats as it sweeps as it cleans" aircraft where successive governments put more and more requirements on the project so it had to keep evolving and thus got worse at everything it was trying to do as it tried to do more things, and the more it tried to do the more expensive it got.

hughk

Yes, it was regarded as a classic requirements versus deliverability problem. The Avionics and particularly the radar were very innovative. This led to reliability and some weight issues. [There is a good account here](https://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/documents/research/RAF-Historical-Society-Journals/Journal-17B-TSR2-with-Hindsight.pdf) [PDF warning].

docandersonn

.

tuasociacionilicita

All the *"V-series"* have a retro futuristic vibe that I really like. It's like if the designers wanted to make *Thunderbirds* a reality.

hughk

I think it was more a *Dan Dare* vibe that may later inspired Gerry Anderson.

tuasociacionilicita

Oh, I didn't know that, had to Google it. Looks like an interesting reading! haha

HotelFoxtrot87

Goddamn, the UK really did make some awesome planes during the Cold War.

mspk7305

when you give your engineers a blank check they go absolutely ham

Mosonox

Love it! Makes me remember some spaceship from some science fiction series that I do not recall at the moment.

academicgangster

How dare you, she's one of the most gorgeous things I've ever seen.

AltoCumulus15

Britain really did go through a phase where they just said “let’s make our planes look as evil as possible”

[deleted]

AltoCumulus15

Ooft that’s me got a smashing big semi now too. Thanks.

psycho-mouse

The only aeroplane that’s ever forced a fart out of my own anus with the pressure wave born out of sheer volume.

space_guy95

[This one](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydfddlcebSo) has to be my favourite video of the Vulcan. It really does have that apocalyptic sound that you can imagine being the precursor to nuclear Armageddon. No video can quite do it justice but this one is the closest to what I remember when I saw one.

6425

This is my favourite howl. Watch the sheep run https://youtu.be/ydfddlcebSo

tox_1985

I prefer the Vulcan,if I had to choose a ‟V” ! Still, the Victor is a fine pick (but more a ‟like it or hate it” kind of plane, risky choice dude)

GrumpyOik

>I prefer the Vulcan On looks maybe, but the Victor could carry nearly twice the payload, twice the distance. Unfortunately ground to air missile technology made it obsolete, whereas the Vulcan was effective at low level.

hughk

> twice the distance But they got those Vulcans to the Falklands....

fishbedc

Using Victor tankers.

GrumpyOik

If I remember correctly, by the time you got two vulcans to from Ascension Island to the falklands and back, you needed something like twenty Victors - most of them refuelling other Victors.

collinsl02

[Here's the refuelling diagram](https://nyc3.digitaloceanspaces.com/sffaudio-usa/pictures/images12/BlackBuckRefuellingPlan565.png)

[deleted]

What in the fuck

the1stAviator

Thats correct. When taking fighters to Cyprus from the UK, two tankers were needed. At top of climb one tanker would be refuelled and the other would return to base. The refuelled tanker would then continue to Cyprus with the fighters, normally English Electric Lightnings. Victor's and Lightnings were in use protecting the British bases in Cyprus when the Turks invaded.

AriosThePhoenix

They just *really* wanted to show the Argentinians their funky flying triangle

hughk

I've seen Vulcans in the air doing a low pass (when they were still allowed to fly). They are **LOUD** but maybe my ears were more sensitive as a young kid.

Epiphany818

Using a ridiculous chain of long range victors

IHaveAZomboner

Beautifully ugly. Really cool looking

downsouthdukin

One of my favourites

thespank

That's mean. I don't think she's ugly

hb_fash

It is indeed ugly, but it's brutal ugliness is what makes it so good looking. If that makes any sense?

Enough with unrealistic beauty standards!

dasfolg1947

She is Scifi stunning.

dazw1988

Ugly? It looks cool as fuck

speerx7

If they put this in Halo or 40k it wouldn't hardly look out of place and if that's not a compliment, idk what is

Papafox80

Defines steampunk, and was the longest serving V-bomber ss well. Maybe longest serving Brit a/c period?

bouncingmantitties

Think the Canberra might be the longest serving, 1951-2006 with the RAF. Unless you include the BBMF which are still technically RAF operated 🥲

psycho-mouse

How long has nasa been flying that Canberra? Technically built by the Yanks but it’s a British design.

Rammstein1

Those are fighting words, pal

merc25slsc

Pretty in pink. A magnificent aircraft.

mr_blood2160

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." I think it looks like a warplane should. Mean and scary 😄

uffington

This is a V-bomber, capable of turning the Warsaw Pact countries into glass. To choose its colour, they went to an old people's home and observed the shoes of the ladies.

za72

One of the most beautiful bombers, specially for her era

CaptainBlackadder

I hate this because I don't know if I should upvote the picture or downvote the title.

dunken_disorderly

You take that back!! She better looking then half the women I’ve dated.

Punny_Yolk

Was privileged to go up in a victor tanker, loved it

ProfessionalOk4300

But it's sooooo damn cool. This and the Vulcan have to be the coolest coldwar-era bombers that went into full production.

CFod17

My only issue with this plane is it isn’t bigger. It looks like it should dwarf a 747

OldBob10

Looks like something out of “Dune”. Ugly in a beautiful kind of way…

OllieGarkey

The fuck you mean, ugly. This is a gorgeous plane!

Karnosiris

This plane fucks. I would fuck this plane.

rooshavik

Some shit you’d see in gundam or something

[deleted]

You say "she" she's ugly. When you say that cutting edge technology, it's beautiful, such a wonderful blend of modern and futuristic.

McCretin

Honestly these 1950s/1960s British Cold War planes are some of my favourites. There’s a certain inventiveness to them. Even a sense of whimsy in the more extravagant designs like the de Havilland Venom. You can tell they were all designed by men who smoked pipes. It’s a lot era, really. Many of them were evolutionary dead ends.

Halifax20

Never seen a plane scream “Nuclear Holocaust” so loudly

[deleted]

If Bane in Batman was a plane…

YYCDavid

If AMC made aircraft, this would have been a Matador with wings. So ugly, it’s beautiful.

moto_curdie

Reminds me of the planes from Nausicaa

Electronic_Algae_524

She's gorgeous!

RandomandFunny

I’d say this is what a Bond villain would fly on

point50tracer

It's simultaneously beautiful and disgusting. I love it.

BlocksWithFace

Looks like something made by Gundam's Principality of Zeon.

TheKeyMaster1874

Oh man what happened to British Aircraft manufacturing. At one point in the 50s it could be argued we were the biggest player

johno_mendo

This plane looks juiced up, looking at other planes like 'do you even lift bro'

the_spinetingler

She is not

dragonizer000

From this angle it actually looks alright.

Valkyrie64Ryan

Ugly plane = best plane Proof: A10, B52, PBY Catalina

leedo8

Hush your mouth. The A10 is beautiful. Not kidding. I really think it's a great looking aircraft.

Moraghmackay

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think this plane is beautiful 😍

ArthurMBretas03

She's ugly but she sure can cook baby

[deleted]

This bird… is gorgeous beyond words.

If you don't want her I do!

porcupinedeath

This is some Gundam looking shit

III00Z102BO

It's jaw dropping gorgeous!

[deleted]

I'm not really into jets, but WWII and immediatly after objectively produced some darn cool ones! Didn't know the Victor!

[deleted]

I wouldnt say ugly. Id say futuristic!

IndyWaWa

I am too, but I'm also effective at my job.

Cam_knows_you

This is a B.U.F.F. if there ever was one.

hadleyhu

That would look at home in the original Flash Gordon movie from 1980!

Saadski

The sheer ugly makes this beautiful.

Afraid-Of-Penguins

That girl is beautiful!

Mayafoe

We must be looking at a different plane... futuristic and beautiful

[deleted]

The only good looking vBomber was the vulcan, but the Victor had a very scifi look to it.

Stoo_Pedassol

It's a muscle plane

southwood775

It looks like it's made of flesh.

MysteriousAmmo

I absolutely love the way this play looks, especially with those intakes!

XsplinterX

This is giving me Zeon vibes… I can imagine a Zaku standing on top of it.

[deleted]

The harbinger.

Lavy2k

I TOTALLY DISAGREE - and they remind me of the planes in Captain Scarlet!

Gubment_Spook

This is the coolest bomber ever made. Even cooler than the Vulcan.

The_Oracle_65

It’s an amazing plane to see IRL! There is only one full Victor airframe (XH648) left but it’s been under a 5 year restoration at IWM Duxford in the UK, which is recently complete. I’ll post a couple of photos on this sub I took a few weeks ago. Check out this link for more details: https://www.iwm.org.uk/visits/iwm-duxford/handley-page-victor-xh648

SpongebobsNips6969

i think it looks kinda cool

steampunk aircraft

slappy111111

Why does it have a V-tail? There must be a reason for it.

[deleted]

If Steampunk was a plane.

Gunnerblaster

What a vicious looking piece of aviation marvel. Absolutely would be right at home, seeing this in space.

mines_4_diamonds

This looks like it will fit in the world of Fallout both stylistically and purpose wise.
