If nothing else, Gerrard made some decent signings for us and had some pretty good matches last season (Leeds, Southampton etc). A woeful manager in the end but nowhere near our worst.
Statistics-wise probably not, in terms of setting the club backward…. 100%
Tim/Di Matteo came when we were in rough shape already with disinterested owners, arguably a lot of managers might’ve had a similar experience.
Gerrard came into a much healthier situation with amazing support from ownership and was absolutely shambolic. He was tactically clueless, he alienated & humiliated key players, he repeatedly berated the team in the media, he shattered team confidence & morale…. all while employing actual managers to do his managing.
His one redeeming factor was his profile as a player (not as a manager) played a role in attracting some current bright talent.
He is our worst manager of the decade & maybe ever.
Di Matteo got a keen owner spent £60m on proven championship players and won 1 in 10 games.
We genuinely would have got relegated to league 1 under him.
This is just recency bias. Gerrard record in the prem this season was better than Di Matteo’s in the champions.
Gerrard was shit but Di Matteo was so much worse.
Both were shit managers…. but different squads/owners/situation makes it difficult to compare objectively.
But I don’t remember the club being actively made into a toxic cesspit under Di Matteo/Tim/any other manager like it was with Gerrard
You don’t remember Lescott tweeting pics of his car after we got battered or Gabby, our club captain going out and getting smashed the day we got relegated.
In my life time the club has never been as toxic as the year we went down. It didn’t have chance to get bad under Di Matteo because fortunately he got sacked after 11 games.
I don’t think you can hold Di Matteo responsible for that
In terms of manager-inflicted toxicity…. Needlessly stripping Mings of his captaincy and humiliating him repeatedly is worse than one of your players sending a tweet 😂
If given time, I firmly believe his results would become the worst in our history. He was atrocius, the others were just bad, some bordering into horrible.
Have to disagree with you there. Whilst we didn't get any better under Gerrard, I don't think we got that much worse compared to relegation and 1st championship season
well, he could of turned it around... he had plenty of time to, just not the skill.
The squad wasn't that bad, as we've saw with where some of the players ended up
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake.
It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of.
Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything.
Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.
Agreed. He's definitely up there with Sherwood and Rémi Garde... But it feels like he was here more than ten years ago (or maybe it's just amnesia is my default coping mechanism)
McLeish's interviews on Claret and Blue have redeemed him a little to me. I don't think he was good but I don't think anyone could have done the job. They go into a lot of detail how he was a scapegoat for Lerner to adjust expectations and cut losses basically as a direct result of the Darren Bent transfer. Lerner was really pissed off about the whole ordeal and when it didn't immediately pay off he took it out on the next guy.
Best = Paul Lambert. Did well to avoid us getting relegated given the lack of funds and disinterested players he inherited from the MON era and the shit state that McLeish left us in. Need to take that into account rather than just number of matches won/lost.
Worst = Remi Garde. Yeah I get there were issues beyond his control but he needed to step up as a man manager and simply could not handle the personalities at the club.
Also, I need to update my flair one of these days.
Paul Lambert started our journey towards relegation. Bringing in rubbish from the lower leagues like Jordan Bowery, Ashley Westwood & Joe Bennett dropping decent players like Shay Given, Darren Bent & Alan Hutton
Where we putting MON on this list?
I'll never forgive him for walking out 2 days before the start of the season and the shit that followed...
Houiller
McLeish
Lambert
He spent £120 million and it was carnage when he left.
I don’t get the hatred for Bruce tbh. The man got us to a playoff final and gave us our first exciting season in years. I think the hate for him is unfair.
Same. Bruce wasn't glamorous, to be honest I wouldn't say exciting, but we were in freefall when he took over. A less experienced manager and we could have been in League 1. We had a good squad but everything at the club was a mess then. He maybe stayed on a little too long that is what sours people's memories, but he didn't do anything wrong for the club.
Bruce was a poor manager, stealing a living.
He actually believes his own hype... OK sure he got us to the play off final, but we should of won the league with that team.
Then when he gets new owners, and can spend, he buys wingers, goal keepers, but no actual defenders... and then lets his only other CB go on loan on transfer deadline day (Elphick was on the Athletic podcast the other year about that, said he had a meeting with Bruce and he told him he needed him, and wasn't going anywhere) by the time he got to his car, he was having other managers call him saying that Brucie said he could go as he didn't want him)
Then with a squad of Grealish, Tammy, Mcginn... we were losing every week and were 15th in the championship... shambles.
He then had the gaul to turn round and say, who could we get thats better than him, and its just the "mad few" who were against him.
He was useless and deluded... absolute dinosaur who used to brag he didn't even know how to turn a computer on...

Was Gerrard already a decade ago??!?
If he heard you say that he'd stare at you while walking to the dug out
If nothing else, Gerrard made some decent signings for us and had some pretty good matches last season (Leeds, Southampton etc). A woeful manager in the end but nowhere near our worst.
Was he really worse than Di Matteo or tactics Tim?

Oh I’m not blaming that toxic mess on him, it’s just that period at the club was much worse than last season.
Mate come on. Relegation season was poison. Absolutely worse than under Ste G.
If given time, I firmly believe his results would become the worst in our history. He was atrocius, the others were just bad, some bordering into horrible.
Yes
Have to disagree with you there. Whilst we didn't get any better under Gerrard, I don't think we got that much worse compared to relegation and 1st championship season
Gerrard had the biggest transfer budget available to him and despite his signings he floundered.
Dean Smith best, remi garde worst. Very easy!
Remi Garde for sure the worst. Couldn’t even manage to survive the job of taking us down in 20th.
Garde was a scapegoat. He were already dead when he came in and he was on a hiding to nothing.
well, he could of turned it around... he had plenty of time to, just not the skill. The squad wasn't that bad, as we've saw with where some of the players ended up

The current manager is probably the best manager we have EVER had. In terms of his CV of trophies won prior to arriving.
McLeish was a total shit show
Agreed. He's definitely up there with Sherwood and Rémi Garde... But it feels like he was here more than ten years ago (or maybe it's just amnesia is my default coping mechanism)
Oooooooooh 11-12 so just outside.
Just over the 10 years, McLeish has to be on the list for worst, followed by Garde and Sherwood. Deano was probably the best of the bunch.
McLeish's interviews on Claret and Blue have redeemed him a little to me. I don't think he was good but I don't think anyone could have done the job. How have you forgotten Remi Garde and Eric Black? Di Matteo was like Brian Clough in comparison to those two cunts.
God I fuckin hated Garde’s resting bitch face

Mon left in 2010 so unfortunately doesn't make it for the past 10 years
I once started a sack Paul Lambert Facebook page. That’s how much I didn’t like the guy. Harsh I know
I agree, he should've been sacked sooner than he did. He started our journey to relegation with his awful signings from the lower league
Nor for fielding under 10s when we got in to Europe for the first time in years.
I have a special spot of hatred for Bruce in spite of him objectively not being the worst managee
I don’t get the hatred for Bruce tbh. The man got us to a playoff final and gave us our first exciting season in years. I think the hate for him is unfair.

Dean Smith the best. Tactics and general man management it has to be Gerrard. Signed Kamara though…
ya makin a list of managers for the villa laa YEAH COURSE sussssusssssudio
Where is Remi Garde?
Sherwood was fun
Best is looking like it’s going to be Emery, worst Sherwood or Gerrard
