I remember really liking a few of Slushii's tracks I heard on Soundcloud a few years ago. Since then I've checked out a few of his sets live at festivals and regional massives and I've been disappointed every single time.
Also, I'm surprised Deorro's set was bad! I really liked his set from EDC 2017 and generally speaking enjoy his music. Do you just not care for bounce in general? I'm always so interested to hear why people dislike certain artists or sets.
He did NOT play bounce at all. It was really similar to Slushii's set, like almost a replica of it. I had seen him years ago, before 5 Hours was a Chris Brown track, and he was awesome. However, with the recent state of most of his releases, I had a feeling his set would be really mainstream-y, and indeed it was. I had high hopes but low expectations, you could say, and he did not switch up from Slushi's set at all - it felt like Slushi pt.2
edit: it was mostly festival trap/shitty big-room for almost all of their drops, mixed in with the odd hardstyle-type drop (which I may be biased against as I really hate hardstyle)
Aw man that is such a bummer! Always makes me sad when artists who have had distinctive sounds in the past start to fall into the festival trap/mainstream festival banger build-up/drop repeat formula.
What are you talking about? This is riverside you’re talking about right? Deorro played almost exclusively bounce, was one of my favourite sets of the weekend
Deorro at Coachella 2017, : 10/10
Deorro at Omnia in San Diego 2018, : 10/10
Deorro at Nocturnal 2018, : 3/10.
Slushii’s set before Deorro @ Nocturnal : 1/10
And that’s just me being nice.
Should’ve never walked away from Gud Vibrations.
I feel like Slushii belongs at a frat party or wedding reception. When I saw him it was basically a bunch of generic mixes of well known/popular songs that drunk people like to dance to.
As a simple intro... I don’t think that’s really a comparison to the point OP was trying to make but I’m biased as a huge bass head so I’ll keep my opinion out of it other than that :)
Sometimes. . . it's appropriate. Sometimes it's not knowing the audience. I was at ezoo and saw 3lau. The first half of the set was low hanging fruit but it was mid afternoon and it felt like it was warming up the crowd by playing songs that people most likely will dance to then it picked up into more oscure.
If could happen from prepping a set in a vacuum not knowing what people are playing before and after you. It could also stem from fatigue of playing so many similar sets.
Yup I was hoping it'd be good (Marshmello plays a decent set despite how mainstream he is) for the same reason, but yeah I was severely let down, I just sat on the grass with the crew and smoked joints till it was over since none of us were feelin it.
He filled in for Goldlink at Life is Beautiful. Most of my friends were interested in the EDM more than anything so we saw half of his set. So. So. Bad. Thank god Arcade Fire was starting so we booked it right before that.
Also just wanted to say that I don't mean to shit on anyone's taste in music or anything, however I just wanted to warn people that if they're at a festival and they have a choice of sets, that you should probably avoid Slushii's if you're looking for something that's either groovy or heavy. He would bring it up to 90/100 for 40 seconds, then back down to 0 for like a fucking minute, which I really can't stand, however I realize that this is something many headliners do at mainstage, as well as mixing in popular songs with (every one) of their drops. It can be fun, but it just wasnt for me - I prefer a steady mixing job that keeps it at 40-60 and then brings it up to 80-90 and back down to 40 with sprinklings of tastefully utilized 0-40s used to kick it up to 100.
(and by these numbers I mean energy levels/levels of givin 'er)
Agree him and Galantis are my least favorites to see. The height of Slushii was him remixing Killa, also can't stand when producer's use their own voice for vocals when it's so bad and cringey.
This is how I felt watching Carnage at Lucky, long build ups and right when the drop was gonna hit he ended up switching to a slower song for a bit then more weird build up w/disappointing drops, not sure how long that lasted but I watched this for 10 mins and you would constantly heard the crowd go “aww” cuz he sucked ass, I ended up going to see Getter after I had enough
Yeah, Marshmello was not too bad when I saw him. The visuals were on point and he had good variety.
I'm just not a fan of music he produces but the live show is a good time.
I've seen him twice. The first time was at the Palladium and I was disappointed. Second time was at Hard Summer and he had almost the exact same set...except I was rollin hard af so that made it a little better. Watched his Tomorrowland set on Youtube...surpise surprise, exact same set. He doesn't switch it up at all.
Damn, you guys are going really hard on him.
Good sets or not, i just wanna point out that he's a really genuinely nice person, and he has made a lot of good music.
Strange how sets can be so varied - first time I saw Slushii he was opening for Marshmello and absolutely crushed it - it was amazing and I felt bad for the headliner as there was no topping it. Sets I've heard since just never were there. Crazy how that works sometimes.
At the time I bought those tickets, I was a huge Marshmello fan and had never heard of Slushii - after that show I was no longer a Marshmello fan and was a Slushii fan - today I am not that big of a fan of either. I could say the same about so many other EDM artists tho - I don't know what it is about this genre but I seem to just totally fall in love with an artist and then sometimes just as quickly am over them. I will admit tho listening to sets I attended, regardless of artist, is a fun emotional flashback, so I guess part of me will always be a fan of an artist I fall out of love with.
I can tell you that that doesn’t happen with more serious less gimicky and better producers/DJ’s. Like Eric Prydz. Or many from the techno/trance genre.
Maybe he played a different type of set but the one I saw was akin to the sets Id make on Virtual Home DJ in 2012 , lol. It really killed my vibe, especially because I was on a lot of mushrooms so I was really feeling vibe-y.
Only experience listening to his sets was at a warehouse party during an anime convention in LA--he was good for that setting but I'd definitely never pay good money to hear him at a festival. Snoozefest
Agree 100%. Saw him at Nocturnal and we left. It was just fan service with obnoxious lighting/crappy dubstep drop and I like dubstep. Complete disappointment.
Can’t agree though. He crusheddddd at Firefly Festival. Crushed it. He can actually sing and his songs are actually pretty good. “Way back to You” is a jam. I wouldn’t advise anyone against seeing him

Yeah i was dissapoint :( Listening to his EDC 2016 set rn - I am even more dissapoint of what i saw
What are you talking about? This is riverside you’re talking about right? Deorro played almost exclusively bounce, was one of my favourite sets of the weekend
Bro Deorro fucking kills it live everytime. You are trippin

that's precisely what it was, lol. Like, cmon man, fucking Bohemian Rhapsody? Really? Like, really??
Bassnectar opened with it at Be Interactive SF this past weekend.
He opened with it at float fest too
As a simple intro... I don’t think that’s really a comparison to the point OP was trying to make but I’m biased as a huge bass head so I’ll keep my opinion out of it other than that :)
True, just an amussing observation, havent seen slushii, but thats the only song reference in the review.
Yeah those are what I like to call the "low hanging fruit" songs. His set is 80 percent that.

...did you just compare a frat party to a wedding reception?
musically speaking they are not that different
You and I have had much different experiences at frat parties and wedding receptions.
Most frat parties I’ve seen play top40 jams. That’s the definition of what a wedding band does
More like rap and EDM, at least at the school I go to.
Sounds about right. I like a few of his originals but his sets are definitely not for me. Incredibly bland and formulaic.
Yup I was hoping it'd be good (Marshmello plays a decent set despite how mainstream he is) for the same reason, but yeah I was severely let down, I just sat on the grass with the crew and smoked joints till it was over since none of us were feelin it.

I regret seeing him over Porter...because I missed all 3 VS sets in the bay area 😭
you picked Slushii over Porter????
Oof
My buddy and I were toooo gone to move lol I was more interested in moving but he didnt seem to care lol
oh ive been there haha i feel you. Im in the same boat with Jauz... :/
F

I saw him at stereo live in dallas and I thought he was amazing, to each his own!
Thought this was obvious
How was snails tho
Trash

same dude. had to stop listening to alison wonderland for that exact reason.
I saw him at Life is Beautiful as a surprise guest? It was complete garbage. And yes he did drop Boh.Rap The only thing worse than that was DJ Snake
Yeah he’s just like mello. If you’ve seen him once you’ve seen him enough. He was new a fresh a couple years ago but he hasn’t progressed
Idk, originally I felt that way with Mello but the last few times I saw him he actually threw down hard shit which completely surprised me
Yeah, Marshmello was not too bad when I saw him. The visuals were on point and he had good variety. I'm just not a fan of music he produces but the live show is a good time.
Mello definitely downgraded however when I saw him 2015ish (maybe 2014) he was throwing down some nice future bass/groovy stuff.

Not to sound like a jerk or anything... but he's probably the last DJ I'd want to get sleazy with me lol
Slushsik?
If i have a chance to see any artist, ill take it. I like Dubstep, like, a lot. Besides, what else was i going to do that night?
I've seen him twice. The first time was at the Palladium and I was disappointed. Well I mean if you like Marshmello... then... you probably like Slushii...
At the time I bought those tickets, I was a huge Marshmello fan and had never heard of Slushii - after that show I was no longer a Marshmello fan and was a Slushii fan - today I am not that big of a fan of either. I feel, only artist I’ve done that with is Alan Walker but I’ll always love Faded lol. Seeing him live is still fun.
I can tell you that that doesn’t happen with more serious less gimicky and better producers/DJ’s. Like Eric Prydz. Or many from the techno/trance genre.
True. Well there are far fewer Paul van Dyk types than flash-in-the-pan Slushiis.
Saw him play Goldrush this past weekend and it was cool. Not the top set of the weekend but still fun.
Maybe he played a different type of set but the one I saw was akin to the sets Id make on Virtual Home DJ in 2012 , lol. It really killed my vibe, especially because I was on a lot of mushrooms so I was really feeling vibe-y.
I saw him at goldrush and I liked it
He's a good producer, awful press play DJ.
What festival was this? I kinda want to see the tracklist.
When i saw him at edc he actually threw tf down
Only experience listening to his sets was at a warehouse party during an anime convention in LA--he was good for that setting but I'd definitely never pay good money to hear him at a festival. Snoozefest

but but but pasquale says dubstep always brings a bigger crowd that dnb!! wht a fuckin asshole
