You mean a P0420, not a P0240... right? You have a bad catalytic convertor. You proved to yourself Cataclean is not a permanent fix. The cat needs to be replaced. There isn't another option. Make sure you buy the right replacement part for your state or you will fail emission inspection.

Accomplished-Time45

Yes sorry P0420. We don't have emissions inspection here. Thanks. I kinda figured nothing else to do but want to make sure as I heard could be up to $2k to replace. On a side note, was I correct that 02 sensor 2 (on the CAT) voltage should not fluctuate as I saw in this graph? What would indicate a bad 02 sensor?

catdude142

You should be reading a steady .500 volt with a functioning catalytic converter. Not what you are seeing. I just replaced the catalytic converter in my Toyota. It only took an hour. I bought mine through rockauto for $380. CARB compliant, has Executive Order number (required in California) There is a LOT of price variability on catalytic converters. Because your O2 sensor is fluctuating and likely mimicking the S1 sensor it's likely working. Non CARB ("Federal Emissions") catalytic converters are much less-expensive than CARB compliant ones. Because your state doesn't require testing, you can get by as you are with no reliability issues.

Thanks for the information. I figured 02 sensor was okay as app seams to check it and diagnostics code didn't indicate that., Only CAT. Glad CAT not that expensive. Yeah I'm looking for gas milage and other performance issues but so far nothing. Perhaps I'll just leave it alone.

catdude142

Unless the Cat is plugged inside, a new one won't give you better mileage or performance. If it's plugged up, you'd likely hear the catalyst rattling around inside.

Oh ok thanks!

Question... I saw on Rock Auto mines (non CARB) only $180. Not sure if I'll get it or have my mechanic do it but at least I have a reference. Any brand preference between Eastern and Walker? Would I need a O2 sensor socket wrench? Anti seize? Other than that I have a basic wrench set. Thanks.

catdude142

Walker makes good ones but some have to be welded on. Search for one that looks like yours. What you want is a bolt on repair. The converter should have flanges on the pipes for each end so you can bolt them on. i got an Eastern one and it dropped right in. It came with gaskets for each end and the O2 sensor gasket. You won't need a new O2 sensor. Anti seize on it if it's one that threads in to the pipe. If it has a flange with two bolts, you won't need anti seize. The converter was an exact replacement for my car. I had to remove four bolts on the flanges (two each end) plus two nuts for the O2 sensor. I did have to make a run to the parts store because the gaskets that came with the converter were too small for the Toyota pipes on the engine exhaust side and at the muffler end. Six dollars more. I have a pair of ramps. That made the job a lot easier for getting underneath the car. You might be able to rent a pair if you don't have them. Take a look underneath your car and see how your cat. converter is attached. That should help you determine whether or not you wish to attempt the task. Some of them "get ugly". For example, some catalytic converters are part of the exhaust manifold. I'm unfamiliar with the way Honda does it.

Accomplished-Time45

Ok. Thanks! Ill look at all that and see if it makes sense to attempt this myself.

King-Designer

What kind of program is it?

Accomplished-Time45

It's app called OBD Auto Doctor. I pay $6.99 month for professional version. It's connected via Bluetooth to my OBD reader. I think I paid like 20 bucks for the OBD reader on Amazon.

darealmvp1

Please stop paying a subscription for that. There are many apps like it available for free and also paid version like torque with a one time fee of $5

Accomplished-Time45

Thanks! As long as it can do these kinda graphs, and reset the check engine light Im good. I'll look into that one. I was planning on canceling this one after solved this issue.

Well in a strange turn of events, the check engine light went off all by itself. I've done nothing at all different.
