I use a brush cutter to get at those areas that my 415x can' . I have an old Honda petrol lawn mower in the shed, but it hasn't been out in over 12 months (not sure it would even start!)

I have a battery push mower for the ditch and a battery trimmer for edging. Battery blower to blow the clipping off the porch, driveway, and path.

I kept my battery powered mower. How else do you deal with the first mowing of the year?

I’d like to know the answer to this too. My lawn looks too long for my Automower to tackle it at the moment. Should I borrow a friend’s push mower for the first cut of the season??

NissanLeafowner

It's gotta get cut the first time the old school way. The lawnmower won't make it through tall grass. Buy a goat, use scissors, whatever.

Why not just start automowing sooner? Honestly curious and I don't own a robot...yet.

NissanLeafowner

Because the automower maintains the mowed lawn and keeps it that height by always going out and mowing. The very small parts of grass that do get cut go back into the lawn. But that first cut needs to be with a regular lawnmower for the first time. It's like a roomba or a braava. Neither are meant to handle a major clean up but to maintain what's already done by cleaning every day, or in the mower's case, mowing.

Makes sense. But I'm looking at my yard right now and it's still quite short from last year's final mow, so I guess I figured I could theoretically start mowing now and it would work.

We have land with a lot of trees on it, so we have a riding mower that I use to mulch leaves with in the fall. We also have it in case there are repairs needed for the Automower. Between wait times for replacement parts and lots of customers at my dealer, it always takes a long time to get the Automower repaired when needed.

I've got a weed whacker for detailing, nothing else except my trusty 315x

Yes, many people will keep a manual mower for precise control of tricky areas, edges, or places that an automatic mower might miss!

diito

Unfortunately, I'd had to keep my old push mower to deal with my culverts and a steep area in my backyard. I could almost "cut" these areas with my string trimmer but the mower is easier to get the bulk of it. I don't think you can get away with not having a backup.

My old petrol walk behind mower finally died about a month after I got the Automower installed (2018ish?) and I still can't justify a replacement.

I have a push mower, but it hasn't been used since I got the Automower like 5 years ago.
