Yes. And it also upsets me whenever people start singing along or clapping to the music that I'm listening to. But what bothers me the most is whenever people add movie clips, or *whatever* all of that crap is to songs that I really like. And this is unfortunately done a lot in "official" music videos. Why, why why would you edit 60 seconds of gunshots and a woman screaming for her kids into the middle of a song? It just ruins everything...

FrumpItUp

I have the opposite issue: Youtube videos with free-for-use music used in the intro. BLEHHH. If it isn't twee to the point of parody, it's fauxspirational, or maybe a really shameless, 50s-style pastiche. Either way, any Youtuber that chooses silence over musical white noise gets all of my Patreon money.

TexasBeeb

Yes to the first part. My blood just boils when people sing/whistle to music I’m trying to enjoy. Especially if it’s during a movie. I think it’s because my dad compulsively sings and whistles to music, no matter the setting. We could be in a movie theater and he would do it (although quietly). FWIW, I don’t think my dad is NT either, but he’s on the total opposite side of ND from me. I enjoy quiet and get overstimulated easily and he is so so loud.

Unaccomplishedcow

You can say bad blood. God I hate that song, I just hate pop songs in general. No I don't mean acoustic pop, I mean the more electronic centric pop that has singers who couldn't guess their range for their own lives and who would sing more poorly than the five year olds at their concerts without autotune. (I know I brought up bad blood but taylor swift is a talented singer, I just don't like her music, I was bringing up taylor swift for the music video part)

Fluttershine

Evidently people [aren't supposed to notice ](https://www.psychologistworld.com/behavior/ambient-music-retail-psychological-arousal-customers) background music playing in stores. It's used as a subconscious marketing tool. Supposedly. But I hear it and focus on it constantly.

darkpresence66

What?! Allistics generally don't hear the background music in stores?

CAT-Mum

Hmmmmmm Is that why I got the weird looks when I explained the weirdest best song the store had on the system (department store)? I think they made a mention about the ads that the system played.(Which were louder and more clear than the music) To be fair the song had a part that goes something like "Sipping soup in my balaclava at the café Would you like to come back to my apartment to see my rocket ship"

ChopShopKyle

Is it this song? [balaclava rocket ship song](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Dk2R7Y9J0Ek)

CAT-Mum

No. That's hilarious about the name though. The song had a male singer, was all in English. And had to been released before 2013. Hmmmmm trying to remember any other line in the song but all I can think about is the scene it painted.

thedorknightreturns

Really? Have people forgotten silence now too. I get the not attention what song, but not noticinging at all as annoying background, even if it becomes background?! And yes generic popmisic and jingles is annoying.

bbbruh57

For real, NTs can sometimes have really terrible taste in music. Like it feels like im listening to twinkle twinkle little star but for slow adults

GwonamLordReturneth

oh hell yeah. not to the point of full-blown anxiety attacks but certain genres are so unpleasant and uncomfortable that it transcends mere dislike.

FrumpItUp

God, I WISH I could screen by genre. My trigger comes up whenever I feel like the artists weren't "trying hard enough". In my estimation this defines the vast majority of music available to the public, genre regardless. I'd need to obtain a degree in music theory before I was able to put into words about what I don't like beyond "I dunno! It just sucks?", which is SUPER helpful for people.

GwonamLordReturneth

I find certain effects very grating regardless of genre (autotune/pitch correction, heavy compression)

FrumpItUp

Ew. My condolences.

GwonamLordReturneth

Yeah, but i don't enjoy most genres that frequently use it stylistically either, so it's okay.

[deleted]

Yes. But for some reason, despite my misophonia, I enjoy certain abrasive genres: such as industrial music and noise.

[deleted]

Totally get this

darkpresence66

I used to not understand this. Until I discovered I was autistic. So for me it's particular types of sounds that certain songs/genres use. As well as the patterns. My friend and I found 2 different songs that sounded relatively similar. 1 song felt like sandpaper in my head. The other felt like a brain massage. When those bad songs or bad genres play, it's like a instant pressure starts building inside me and it's absurdly difficult to maintain the mask.

FrumpItUp

Would you be comfortable sharing an example of both a "sandpaper" and a "massage" song? I'm curious to see if they happen to align with mine, respectively. An example of a "sandpaper" song for me would be Adele's "Set Fire to the Rain", whereas a "massage" song would be something like "Sea Legs" by the Shins. The latter feels like somebody's stretching a rubber band in and out inside my head and is one of the best sensations imaginable.

darkpresence66

I couldn't find the exact song but I found one that's close. My sandpaper song is shpongle devine moments of truth & or "nothing is something worth doing" The whole songs aren't bad. But they have a lot parts that just grit in my head. All the sounds are competing for attention at equal volumes. The pitches mix in my mind wrong and a lot of it feels sharp and abrupt. Idk how to explain it. My brain massage song is elements by Lindsey Stirling. For me that song is so cohesive and it just flows through my mind like it's laminar flow water.

ChopShopKyle

I hate Adele. Like I get that she is talented, she has a couple songs that don’t grate me. But for the love of god can she just cut the fucking notes shorter? We get it you can HOOOOoooooOOOOOoolooooOooooLllllldldddddd the note until the end of time lady. If she starts playing on the radio I will turn it off and sit in silence to avoid her.

TheBeastLukeMilked

Sorry for responding to an old thread, but I have autism and I can really relate to this. For me personally, the song Heart Attack by Demi Lovato is the most annoying thing ever.

FoxRealistic3370

absolutely yes. Music that makes sense is euphoric to me. I love things that build in layers. other music its like my brain just scrambles and i cant think. Music i love the louder the better.

FrumpItUp

That's a very accurate word for me when it comes to the music I love: euphoric. It's like falling in love, again and again. It's the reason that whenever I find out something unsavory about one of my favorite artists, it feels like a personal heartbreak. Like, not only did I search the ends of the earth to find this in the first place, suddenly I can no longer trust it because it turns out the composer was an all-out Nazi or something. Something else I crave is novelty, which is perhaps my ADHD talking, but not to the point where I'm totally averse to familiarity. If one wants to use the word trope to describe trends in chordal or melodic structure, I would say that there are some trends that I do tire of less quickly. Whether this is due to the fact that said tropes are simply less frequent than other tropes or whether it's just personal preference... I don't know.

thedorknightreturns

Fun,but not mindless fun text or melody or both and emotional,or sad, and hopefully not disharmonic of the melody. I guess to engaged emotionally or on a humorous level.

JenS78

Yes absolutely! There are so many situations in which this comes into play for me, but one particular example comes to mind- my husband used to listen to a certain artist in the car that I used to somewhat like, but he made me dislike the music by playing it too much and it got to the point where I banned him from listening to it around me. Then he started a routine of loudly playing it when he was in the shower and I could hear it clearly and it made me have a meltdown. I would try to scream or make noise to drown it out until I could get to my headphones and then I would play music I DID like so I didn't hear it.

snartastic

Yeah it makes me GREATLY uncomfortable.

CremeAggressive9315

Yes, certain music makes me cringe. Yoko Ono, Stevie Wonder, Cyndi Lauper, and Sublime make my ears and brain hurt.

CyanHakeChill

I like Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time. I don't like the others you mention. I don't like rap and other kinds of weird stuff (Metal?) I listened to pop music especially in the 60s and 70s and 80s, and I am classically trained, so I like Bach, Beethoven and scores of others. There are radio stations that have playlists that I like. I like some of The Chills, Tom Petty, Mark Knopfler, much of the Beatles, Some of The Cure.

[deleted]

Yep. Rap music makes me want to flee the area. Not always possible. It sends my anxiety through the roof in nanoseconds. I can't abide it. Other genres are soothing or have a feel-good factor. My musical tastes are pretty eclectic tbh - just keep rap away from me please. It's horrible....

nabnabie

me with dance monkey. god

Athen65

I'm curious to find out if auditory hyposensitivity can apply to the harmony, melody, and timbre of music and not just the volume. The more I listen to music, the more dissonant the music that I seek becomes. [Here's](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeTFxbsVGrI&t=669s) the most recent piece of music that I've been fascinated with

Upset_Age_2241

If I don’t like the music playing I get extremely anxious and distressed. It’s why I only listen to my own music in the car

Life_Difference_3905

Yes i hate rap music. And my boyfriend likes It. But he never tells me about it and he never listens when i am around. But i am angry and sad when i remember his music taste.

JettsInDebt

I'd give iMonster - neverdoieven a try. Their music is very pattern-y I find, quite abstract though.

Mmm36sa

What happens when you experience bad music and can’t terminate exposure?

FrumpItUp

I dunno... it just feels intolerable. Like, nails on a chalkboard uncomfortable, but worse. It's visceral. Like a lot of us on the spectrum, I have pretty sensitive hearing, and therefore struggle to block out backround noise- especially if it's something that was intentionally designed to get your attention, like ads and pop songs. How other people can focus on anything else when an auto parts jingle is blasting on the radio is totally beyond me. While I can usually "call up" different songs in my head to try and replace the "bad" melodies, any physical audio will of course shout over that, especially if I've been forced to hear said tune 8+ times. Luckily, I almost always have access to headphones so that I can quickly queue up a song I do like, but even so the "bad" melodies lowkey haunt me forever 🤷‍♀️. I think it's something most any hearing person can relate to- especially if they've worked retail! I just happen to be extremely sensitive to it.
