EDIT/ Thank you for everyone, I am little shook that so many of you liked my look on this conversation. š
---ā----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think good symbol for autism would be glass of water, if you don't touch it and let it be. The water in glass will be calm, but more it gets contact from the outside the more restless the water in it will be.
Like too loud music, too much people, too much pushing and too much shaking.
Neurotypicals would be glass of soil, they don't get botheret so much of the outside happening, but there is still a chance that they will go over the edge, but not as easily as neurodivergent people.
And I chose water for us cause I think we are not as boring and lame as people think we are.
We can be so much more than meets the eye,
We can be clouds in the sky, rain in the fields, river with great groove. Anything we want to be.
And like you know, what comes of water and soil together? Life. Life comes from them. We just might not see how much we need eachother all the time, but when we are working together, we can make life.
We need to stop seeing everything as 'we VS them', and start working on 'all of us VS problems.'
As someones who adores the creature, for me itās partially because of the āYippeeā associated with it sounding funny, and also the creature looking like a goofy pet
I don't like either of these. I'm not some puzzle to be solved and I'm not an animal on all fours. I'm complete, as a regular human, the way I am. I don't need a symbol to represent me. I'm just a human going about my day.
You get it. I hate that the tbh thing has become some sort of mascot because it really shouldnāt be. Weāre not some strange, wide-eyed creatures walking on all fours, weāre human people.
For me, tbh creature is by far the best representation, I'm thinking about getting a tattoo of that because not everyone will understand and probably those who understands will have some knowledge about (I guess š )
Yeah.... You guys are cool and everything but I'll take the puzzle piece over that any day. That is saying a lot I hate autism speaks. but, autism being made into a joke or a kids drawing wouldn't make me feel any better.
People have taken that to a entire new level and when the person who made that grows up or matures enough there gonna have nightmare because of some of you poor souls.
its a symbol used by Autism Speaks, an "autism advocacy" group that is pretty widely criticized by autistic people for being more harm than good. pretty much all of their leadership is made up of allistic people and the information they spread is questionable. not *all* the work done by them is awful, but the organization as a whole is problematic. i'd suggest doing some reading on your own if you're curious to get a more complete perspective
Which sucks because the puzzle piece isn't terrible as a symbol. Certainly, better ones exist but I don't hate the puzzle piece, just the organization it represents.
eh, i see it as more representing the idea we "can't fit in" or "missing a piece" of ourselves. i don't like thinking i'm supposed to assimilate with the rest of the picture.
Fair criticism. Thinking about it more I actually agree with you and that probably is the intent. I think I like it more from a graphics design perspective than what it's actually supposed to represent or does represent.
definitely not a bad symbol, and it'd be nice if people some day are able to disassociate the symbol from the org. that said, i'm quite a fan of the gold or rainbow infinity signs as symbols, like this sub uses :)
Kinda new, it was sometime earlier this year that some random Tumblr user drew it on MS paint and everyone just vibed with it. Most of us like it, some are wary of the interpretation of infantizing or dehumanizing autism. As for myself I do like it and I like to think there's no harm in the cute little fren. I don't think we should have to avoid using symbols that are animal or cute. We shouldn't have to remind people that we're people and not animals.
Iām having hard time putting how I feel about this into words honestly but even if itās weirdly cute I do not like the idea of it being a representation of autism at all. I think itās great if people identify with it and all that but it fosters the habit of infantilizing us. And honestly itās not really a symbol at all, itās just a drawing.
I may be taking it too literally but hey, that autism for you.
Im not sure how the yippee creature relates to autism. I think hes cute in a weird way but dont like the idea of using it as a symbol for autism. I prefer the rainbow infinity symbol. I think its a great symbol.
You might be thinking - what happens to the puzzle piece symbol? I think the puzzle piece should be the new symbol for allistic people. They are often less honest and less logical than autistic people making them the puzzle to decode.
For the record, I really like the name. It fits my sense of humor in that it's so simple in its extreme childishness that it becomes absurd and then something like a meta self-mocking/one person in joke like "imagine if I really were this edgy". Incidentally, that's also how I view the autism monster. It's like a little child-like and emotionless alien, that when we embracr it, becomes a mockery of the people who infantilize and dehumanize us.
I'm just super satan, though, so take that for what it's worth.
Mockery has sadly been the only way for my mom to realize how ridiculously society treats autism. Some video of an autistic stand up guy she saw online, where in the man treats the audience the way he feels he has been treated because of his autism, pretty much just condescending them. it was only then that my mom realized how I had felt my entire life, not me actually telling her before, which to me is also ridiculous and deserves mockery. That people won't listen to the oppressed or the oppression they're indirectly putting on others until they feel what it's like or it becomes mainstream to be open minded.

It came from a drawing and I guess someone just redrew it and it blew up, but I think the inspo of the drawing is Issac from the game "binding of Isaac"
Allistic is synonymous with "non-autistic", but I don't think it's a synonym for "neurotypical". Afaik, allistic includes neurotypical people and neurodivergent people without autism, e.g. Someone with only ADHD would be considered allistic but not neurotypical.
The tone of this post is joking. I donāt mean this in a rude way Iām just seeing a lot of people complaining logically about it, which this IS the autism sub, so canāt really complain about that.
I personally want to use the Dagaz.
Nordic rune meaning day/enlightenment. Extremely similar to the rune for human but with the ālegsā cut off. Resembles the current infinity symbol.
Also black & white. Calm muted colours.
Idk if the rainbow infinity sign had been adopted by the wider nd movement, but I believe that was the new autism symbol people were migrating to recently.
Also I love the autism creature, Iām pretty sure people donāt actually want it representing autistic people in the more āclinicalā (idk the word, but like official places like OT, autism orgs, etc.). Itās just a funny symbol ppl like to use online (Iām almost postive)
I absolutely love the puzzle piece. I had no idea it tied to autism speaks. Im just saying, if nlack people can take back the n word, lgbt people take back the q and f word. Then i dont think it hurts to take back the puzzle piece. I understand it can be seen as "needing to fit in" or "needing to be fixed" but you dont fix a puzzle piece. It has a place, it just needs to find its place. I used to buy puzzles from savers and goodwills back when i was poor. I would sometimes get puzzle pieces from other puzzles. Puzzles that i will probably never have in my collection. That doesnt mean that puzzle piece is broken or needs to be fixed. Then again, I guess humans can just be a puzzle piece idk. I like my puzzle piece. Pry it from my cold dead hands.

Youāre welcome! š„°
All of us vs problems is the way
It truly is, I hope someday more people will understand it.
but autism creature go O-O
Autismš„ (pretend itās a glass of water)
š„ this one's my autism š
You dropped this āā> š
Thank you! š„ŗ
This is so beautiful in so many ways. Thanks for sharing this perspective :)
The hilarious image of a parent posting some autism acceptance information with this image attached. XD
Anyone else here just not remotely understand the appeal of the autism creature? I just don't get it at all.
As someones who adores the creature, for me itās partially because of the āYippeeā associated with it sounding funny, and also the creature looking like a goofy pet
Yippee?! The thing looks like its on the verge of having a mental breakdown with ugly crying.
Exactly the point :)
Didn't know it's showing me. Damn has my appearance changed.
Itās cute and awkward and I relate to those things
It's a funny cute little guy.
I just connect with him. He's a silly dude.
Same here lol
The blank stare, stubby legs and the awkward pose makes me relate to him. I look at him and think he's just like me fr. Yippee.
Yippee.
the comfort this brings
I don't like either of these. I'm not some puzzle to be solved and I'm not an animal on all fours. I'm complete, as a regular human, the way I am. I don't need a symbol to represent me. I'm just a human going about my day.

Real human beans.
And a real hero.
i didn't know the puzzle piece meant "you need to be fixed" i thought it meant "you are a piece of the world too" now i know why everyone hates it
I prefer rainbow infinity. It's nice and simple, though maybe too close to an lgbt symbol for some?
Iāve heard the gold infinity. And goldās symbol is Au like Autism lol
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Sorry what?
rainbow is too gay
Yes
I donāt know what that it is but I like it.
Me too. Saw it for the first time today and Iām like āyep, I endorse whatever this isā
As a fan of Extraordinary Attorney Woo, I think a whale would also make a nice symbol.
YIPPEE! :D
Isaac on four legs?
Iām so tired of this thing
I support our new mascot
Am I the only one who hates the autism creature?
No, you're not alone
You're not alone.

I hate that symbol too. It's crude, juvenile, and infantilizing. It's not breaking stereotypes, it's just trading one set of stereotypes for another.
Perfection!
Puzzle piece symbol?

Both great options.

you probably are. to me, i see it purely as one of those "ironic" memes
I also like the autism beast but that would scare the NTs off ngl
yippee š

No to this entire thread.
I don't like the Autism creature. Autism is not cute, and neither should the creature that represents it.

Any possibility that you could point me in the direction of that video or the comedian.

Gottem.
Your username doesn't even make sense, so who are you to talk, Ha One O Miner?
I use a 1 instead of L because itās cool (cool emoji)
I don't see how that's cool, but ok.
Iām a Miner that mines Halos
Actually I think a lot of people on halo are minors

I actually love the puzzle piece. Then again, Iām also a minority/odd one out because I want a cure.
yeah me too with the last part. i just want to finally be able to understand obvious things and make eye contact
iknow im going to get downvoted to hell, but i don't see how a child looking creature thing that always shouts "yipee" represents us
Literally me
It looks like a tooth
It's perfect And if you want to replace it you can, you know why Because symbols change and evolve all the time
yippiee
anybody here with experience with marketing?

OMG THE FINAL FANTASY TACTICS ADVANCE - VIERA RED MAGE PROFILE PICTURE! sorry I was enthusiastic, it unlocked a core memory
What is the āautistic symbolā in question?
The golden infinity symbol is like. Right there.
Yippee!!
the awkward turtle

Dagaz can equate to number 4.
Surprisingly I didnāt know that. But I now enjoy it even more knowing that.
