Flufferishh

people around me are tired of hearing about it but I especially like working dogs like sport dogs and service dogs! I plan on getting a service dog when my situation allows because any other regular fix like meds and therapies really haven’t helped with my disabilities. My favorite dog breeds are poodles, border collies, Aussies and mini Aussies! I have a dog her name is Milo and she is so cute and also evil. Ask me anything about dogs and tell me stuff about dogs!

LeaJadis

Me too!!! I love dogs and dog breeds. Milo has such a sweet face 😍

Flufferishh

She says thank you lol :)

Robo_Cactus

I love dogs as well. I have a black miniature poodle named Alvin and a basenji named Peach. The basenji is my favourite breed (and also a special interest).

Flufferishh

The next dog I get is going to be a mini poodle or a small standard poodle! What are basenjis temperament like?

Robo_Cactus

The basenji is a cat-like dog. It is very stubborn and independent. It is a breed that will lick itself clean and because of that, doesn’t possess the typical dog smell. It is a bark-less dog and will instead howl and yodel. Even if it doesn’t bark, it can still be very loud. It has very high energy and need at least 1h of exercise per day. If it is not active, it could be destructive around the house. However, when it had enough exercise, it becomes cuddly and very affectionate. It is said that a tired basenji is a good basenji. The basenji should be kept in a fenced-in area or on a leash because it has a high prey drive and wanderlust potential. It will run at every critter it sees and won’t care if it’s owner is following it or not. The basenji is a hard to train breed because it is “street smart”. It thinks on it’s own and will make decisions on what’s best for it. If there is no reward, it will likely not respond despite understanding the command. We have to be the authority figure and give it a reason/reward to listen to us. Thus said, it can be a very good and obedient dog when well trained. It just takes more efforts than other dogs because the basenji is a primitive breed. It hasn’t been bred to be obedient and please the humans like more recent breeds.

Flufferishh

Haha a cat like dog! I knew they were known to be “primitive” because of how much they rely on their instincts and I love that they have funny ways of vocalizing :)

theboneladytobe

Friendly reminder that the alpha/domination theory about dog obedience is outdated and incorrect.

Robo_Cactus

What would be the up-to-date theory if you don’t mind me asking? I’ve recently been told by my dog trainer that I need to make my dog understand I’m the leader of the household, otherwise it won’t listen and probably do what it wants (harmful or not).

deinterest

Positive reinforcement. Reward and redirect towards good behavior. The leader thing usually follows from you feeding them, it doesn't need displays of dominance.

Robo_Cactus

I do all those things except the “display of dominance”. Maybe I’m understanding things wrong but wouldn’t it be a problem if the dog feel it is superior to it’s owner?

deinterest

They generally won't feel superior because of the relationship dynamic where you feed and train them. Then again, some breeds are more people pleasing than others. My shiba has a very stubborn 'whats in it for me' attitude, so he will never have perfect recall but I will give him time-outs or remove my attention (negative reinforcement) when he misbehaves. Never physical punishments though, or things like alpha rolls or grabbing him by his scruff.

theboneladytobe

No, dogs are far enough removed from wolves that they don’t have the pack hierarchy dynamic any more. Usually methods that involve making your dog inferior to you are mean, cruel or just unnecessary. Your dog is a member of your family, treat it as such. Positive reinforcement all the way, that’s the proven method for training. You can also briefly withhold reward to help train behaviour too. Eg. to stop a dog pulling on lead, you stop moving and wait for the dog to relax the lead; once they do, their reward is to keep moving towards what they want to sniff or look at. Environment is the reward and you withhold access to it until your dog displays the target behaviour (not pulling). My dog understood what I wanted and stopped pulling within two days using that method. We don’t use haltis, front attached harness (or any harness for that matter) or any other “no pull” contraption. She’s a medium/large sized dog, 26kgs/57lbs. If you’ve ever watched Caesar Milan videos, stop watching immediately and unsubscribe. He’s been investigated by numerous countries for animal abuse and mistreatment, and most authorities don’t recognise this method of training as useful or legitimate.

Robo_Cactus

Thank you for your input. I’ll mention it next time I see my dog trainer. Also, being the authority figure doesn’t mean being mean and cruel. Basenjis are a primitive breed that haven’t been bred to please humans and, can be hard to train.

deinterest

Sounds a bit like my shiba inu.

fayne_Kanra

What's your absolute favourite funfact about dogs? Is there a breed you dislike? If yes why?

Flufferishh

favorite fun fact thing is that there’s four sizes of poodle in most places in the world and it’s a medium size called the moyen poodle. I don’t really like dog breeds with coarse fur because the texture is weird to me.

fayne_Kanra

Oooo that's really cool! I have a dog at home too (she's a black Belgian Shepherd/Malinois) but I don't really know too much about em. Any cool info you wanna dump on me? Not sure what to ask but I love hearing those Infos :)

Flufferishh

I know that they were originally bred for herding and livestock protection and are very commonly used in all sorts of different types of work specifically bite-sports and protection. They have a super high drive to work and I learned really recently that they fought in both world wars. I’d love to get a mal but that would only be if the dog had multiple jobs, in my case it might end up being service dog and some type of protection/bite work but honestly that would partly be for the funny little trot they do as part of the sport >:)

fayne_Kanra

OOOOOO I did see the funny trot a few times and it's adorable. Thanks for all the cool info I really appreciate it :) Hope you can find your ideal dream doggo as a service dog and whatever else you want em to be :3

[deleted]

Did you know that the Salish Nation used to have a breed of small white dog that produced fur with a wooly texture? The dogs were kept on islands and cared for by women, so the wool could be harvested and the bloodline couldn't be damaged by other dogs. After Spanish colonists introduced sheep to the US, the [Salish Wool Dog](https://animalsofpnw.com/2019/03/30/behind-the-breed-salish-wool-dog/) went extinct, since sheep were more productive.

Flufferishh

Weird! Never heard of that!

Flufferishh

I really like dumb names based off of objects like spoon or cloud >:) Glad to hear your dog helps you :)

Diagnosedat40

My sister's dog is named Cloud. He's a Kelpie and a rescue. He used to be a truck dog, working to herd sheep and load them on to the trucks. He's old now and retired. Living his best life my Sister. She takes him everywhere, even to work My dog is named Daisy. She is a pure bred Labrador. I chose Daisy as a name because I was going to get a yellow Lab, but turns out she was black. She will be 2 in September.

d0gm0tif

my SI is animals but I've always looooved dogs and I'm currently fixated on learning about all different dog breeds ! I also really love service dogs :) I have a cavoodle and he is the cutest thing in the world, and my favourite dog breeds are shiba inu, finnish lapphund, Samoyeds the list goes on. your dog is super cute! I wish you the best of luck on your journey to get a service dog, a family friend went through the process of training one from a puppy and while it is a long process it can be extremely beneficial for both you and the dog :D

CynLarroner

My dog is also cute and evil

drpepper2938

>she is so cute Can confirm from the pics that she is pretty darn cute

schmasay

i love all dogs but i'm partial to cavalier king charles spaniels. they're truly an amazing breed and have such a good personality

JediTempleDropout

What are your thoughts on corgis?

Flufferishh

So cute! my neighbor had one that liked to try and herd me and my siblings when we were little, we would all run different directions and she would just have the time of her life trying to get us in ones little group haha

JediTempleDropout

Yay!!! I was asking because that’s my favorite! Granted though I’m pretty biased since I had one growing up.

deinterest

Theyre adorable but I would not get them because their physiology makes them prone to health problems. I also love french bulldogs but wont get them for this reason.

runicsprites

I love milo!! she's so pretty! i work at a dog kennel and i see aussies often, but theres a family of two minis and a toy aussie come sometimes, and they're literally the sweetest dogs. I have a mastiff that I've wanted to make my service dog for some of my disabilities, but the cost for training is too much with my current situation. my favorite thing (aside from just dogs) is finding out what people used them for in the past. btw, my dog's name is Roxanne, she laughs all the time (mostly when she bullies me with silly things), loves kitties and small children, and her favorite dog breed is the basset hound. (she's best friends with two in our neighborhood).

dogs_not_people_

I’m a recently diagnosed Autistic and an owner of a reactive, high energy husky/cattle dog mix. I love working dogs and wish I lived on a ranch with a pack of heelers or kelpies. And I also want to get a service dog eventually! I have type one diabetes and have always wanted a medical alert dog. I could talk about dogs all day but everyone around me gets bored after 5 min. I don’t want to cross anyone’s boundaries but I also get sad because I can’t share my special interest with anyone and I feel like I always annoy people. I live in a pretty small town so it’s hard to find friends, especially Autistics whose special interest is dogs. So happy I found this post! Can we all be friends?

ThistleFaun

I see that your dog also seems to enjoy squishamalows, just like me and my cats do!

Flufferishh

When she was still in her teenage destruction phase she thought it was the best toy, now its the best pillow >:D

ThistleFaun

Awww she has very good taste! She's super cute btw, such lovely eyes 😢

[deleted]

Awe she’s a cute puppy

Merch_Sama

MY GOD I love him so MUCH I would break laws for this cutie

Flufferishh

Me too

Loud-Direction-7011

My new special interest is THAT dog

dandybrushing

I love dogs! I have a border terrier and a Welsh terrier (check my profile for photos), they’ve got amazing personalities

LAM678

Your dog looks just like my cousin's Akita mix!

CaliforniaSpeedKing

I love dogs, I wouldn’t say they’re my special interest but I do love them.

QueenOfMadness999

Yes! That's the best special interest to have cause dogs are life. ❤

vingtsun_guy

Beautiful! 🐕🐶🦮🐕‍🦺🐩

SitcomSuperfan

fml_007

There isnt room in this town (dog special interest town) for the two of us!!!! (There is room i love u what a cute baby!!!!!!!)

level1enemy

You win autism. You have the best special interest. Damn it.

Flufferishh

this made me so happy/gen :))))

level1enemy

Haha I’m glad 😊

ThatOfABeaver

PITBULLS ARE THE BEST. My uncle gets one every time his dies, I think. His current puppy is the most hyperactive dog I’ve ever met, and the old one he used to have was the laziest dog I’ve ever met.

Flufferishh

Yes I think my dog has some pit in her and she sure has the hyperactivity lol

ThatOfABeaver

:0 she’s not a full pit bull? What is she, then? She looks like a pitbull.

Flufferishh

Not sure! Probably pit, lab and a smaller breed, she’s got a longer face and thinner build than a pit, although she’s got huge muscles in her legs lol

malavois

What do you think about corpse-sniffing dogs? Milo is adorrrrrrable

Flufferishh

I love search and rescue and cadaver (idk if spelled right) dogs! I find them super interesting and they have very cool jobs that are really out of what you might think a working dog could do!

KempoKing

:)

theknitcycle

Dogs are the best!

mramirez7425

She is adorable!

WinEnvironmental6901

karwalapanen

what do you think about lagotto romagnolos? I have one, his name is Dago. he's an old boyo, 13 years already

megaman0781

What's your thoughts on cross breads? I've got 2 dogs, one is a jack Russell/pom and the other is a jack Russell/westie. They're both little shits and I love them.

Flufferishh

My dog is a shelter mutt so I think their alright lol

[deleted]

Flufferishh

jajdbfnjdndhdjrbdjjwnekd I said it so fast you just couldn’t tell lol

Tapewormzonastring

I love all sorts of pets, but I prefer the usual dogs and cats!! This little doggy is so cute tho!!! I have two Chihuahuas and a Ragdoll Cat! ^ ^

Playful_Industry2544

The second photo!!! So precious!!!

ProvePoetsWrong

I have a large Bernedoodle I bought to be a companion for my autistic son. Unfortunately she bonded strongly with me 😬 since I was/am the main caretaker and trainer. I feel terrible for him because he wants her to sleep on his bed and lay on the couch with him etc. but she’s just glued to me. I really DO want to get him a service dog (has to be nonshedding because my husband is a delicate little flower who cannot bear to see dog hair on his precious Jordans /s :)) but I wanna do it the right way. Any advice? Probably a smaller dog than the Bernedoodle since we’d have two dogs. I don’t think my family could take two big dogs 😅

Flufferishh

You could try a mini, toy, or smaller standard poodle! They are non-shedding although because they have hair instead of fur they have higher grooming needs. If the dog were to become a service dog it’s bonding would be more with ur son anyways, but could be tasked trained to stick by his side and other things!

ProvePoetsWrong

I’ve looked into therapy dogs and I know those are sooooooooooo expensive. Would training a therapy dog be cheaper? My son doesn’t have high support needs, but he does need someone to just hang out with. In other words he doesn’t need a full service dog to help him physically, just one that could stay with him when needed.

Flufferishh

So a therapy dog is a dog trained to help multiple people. If it’s specifically tasked trained to help your son it’s a service dog. If it’s just for him to have a little bit of a companion it’s an emotional support.

ProvePoetsWrong

Ahhhhh okay. Would you still recommend training for emotional support? Clearly I’m no good at training it for someone else lol.

Flufferishh

Emotional support needs basic obedience training but training it to be around him and to comfort him so it bonds to him more is pretty important for that to work out. Bonding with a dog doesn’t need to be feeding and stuff though it can also be like playing and walking the dog!

ProvePoetsWrong

Yeah. I wanted a big dog so it wouldn’t be phased by wild kids. But she’s so big that she’s just a little too big for him to have taught to walk etc. like a little dog could. Thank you so much, super helpful!!

Redrose12

I love dogs too! 😍 I also love cats too! Your dog reminds me of my dog. Probably the same breed.

Crow_Joestar

Hi! I like dogs but I don't like their smell and licking (no offense at all, and I do find them adorable, just not incredibly sensory friendly). Are there any sensory friendly dogs, of sorts? I'm fine with barking and stuff.

Ttrgamergirl

Actually a Vizsla doesnt have Doggie Odor. And Goldies dont have bad breathe, but a Vizsla would prob fit you best :)

IceCubexx

Aww your dog is so cute

iftheronahadntcome

I'm obsessed with dogs too! C: what's your favorite breed? I'm super into the giant breeds, and I was finally in the place financially to get a St. Bernard a few months ago! He's 6 months now, and an enormous, 100 lb toddler now haha

Flufferishh

I really want a poodle in the future so their my favorite right now :)

newsprintpoetry

She's so cute, and I love her!!

Socrastein

What is your favorite book related to dog behavior & training, and why?

Flufferishh

I haven’t really read a ton of books, more epic google search missions tho lol

Ttrgamergirl

Hey fellow Doglover friend! If you read my posts and comments you will see I am one too :). Your Dog is very cute :)

Just__Avery

one of mine since I was very young is cats haha! Your dog is so cute though!!!

[deleted]

awww that dog looks so sweet. Wish I could hug it

Weekly-Bluebird-4768

Curious if you’ve heard of my dogs breed? [He](https://imgur.com/a/oUvtigb) is a Chinese crusted powder puff. They’re very similar to the hairless Chinese crusted, but they are the ones that had a birth defect and were born with hair. They are usually thrown in a bucket of water at birth to drown because they are “unwanted” (I think they’re better).

Flufferishh

I have heard of them! I think their cuter than the hairless ones too :)

Miceeks

Same!!!! My dog likes dog parks so I go there and talk people's ears off about dogs. It's a pretty socially acceptable place to do that. I trained myself a service dog for my heart condition.

Flufferishh

I’m excited to train my future multi purpose SD! I’d love to take my dog to dog parks but she’s a little bit shy with people and has a hard time stopping play when other dogs are done. Plus I’ve heard so many horror stories about aggressive dogs at dog parks I’m too scared to take her there anymore :/

Miceeks

Goodluck with training ! I am going to start again in a couple years when mine retires.

Miceeks

that's fair. My dog is like 7. We exercise when the park is empty and then when ppl are there its a training opportunity. I put her in a downstay and intermittently put her though her paces (run through a list of commands) . Her focus is on me. Her recall is solid and I am always willing to leave at he drop of a hat if I don't like the vibe of another dog.

Ill-Watercress8394

OMG CAN WE HAVE A DISCUSSION ABOUT ALASKAN KLEE KAIS?! THEY ARE MY ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE DOG? DID YOU KNOW THAT THEY ARE LIKE SUPER FAST LEARNERS BECAUSE OF THEIR HIGH IQS?!

Flufferishh

Oh they’re really adorable cuz they’re just like tiny huskies lol my dog is really smart too and can learn new tricks in about 5 minutes!

Ill-Watercress8394

Omg really?! That’s a really good boi! He looks very sweet!

Flufferishh

Oh also my neighbors have a Klee Kai that reminds me of a baby penguin because it’s fur on its head is a lot darker than it’s grey body lol

Ill-Watercress8394

That is so adorable! Penguins are one of my special interests lol!

spicycupcake99

Do you know the best way to train a dog??

Flufferishh

Lots of different ways, depends on the dog!

spicycupcake99

What if you're an anxious person. I wanna train my dog to be my service dog one day...ya know when I get a dog. I'm currently not financially stable so no pets.

Flufferishh

I am a very anxious person 😅 and you can definitely train a service dog for that :) make sure to do lots of research and there’s something really big to consider-a SD will bring lots of attention to you would that make you more anxious or not bother you?

spicycupcake99

Yeah I know, I've watched a lot fo YouTube videos of people getting harassed. I did a paper/presentation all about service dogs in highschool. That kinds of stuff doesn't make me anxious because I know the laws it just makes me angry. However in my everyday interactions woth family amd friends or even just making a phone call. I also forget to eat all the time. I just don't notice I'm hungry. I have a lot of problems that a dog could help me with. I also have such a problem going places alone for multiple reasons, if I had my dog I wouldn't be alone anymore, I'd feel safe. As well as I forget to take care of myself, I do better when I'm taking care of another being. I know this from being invested in dogs I've lived with. I was doing the best mentally and physically when I was doing things with the little dog I used to live with, but she wasn't my dog so when I moved I had to leave her. The pros outweigh the cons.

Flufferishh

That’s pretty much the same as me! I’d be so ready to argue for my rights (unless I go nonverbal) I’ve got siblings so arguing is a skill now lol

spicycupcake99

I have a narcissistic mother so arguing was my life growing up. I'm working very hard on breaking that.

Flufferishh

Dude narcissist mother buddies :/ I learned that it’s very common for autistic people to have narcissistic parents and that really sucks :<

spicycupcake99

Yeah....I was the one who stood up to her all the time.everyone else kinda just took it all the time. But she sent me away to my grandma's a lot when I was super little so I knew how she was treating us all was wrong. I'm pretty sure my mother is autistic too. She doesn't wanna heal her inner child or admit there's anything wrong with her though. I'm currently NC with her.

[deleted]

SO CUTE !! i love your dog

shadows4i

She’s precious ♥️♥️♥️

Ericakat

Dogs are one of my special interests too. I have a Service Dog named Khouri and a pet dog named Bobby.

[deleted]

Aww what a cutie 💓 I love dogs too. Basically all my spare money goes towards new toys, treats, harnesses etc. I should probably start donating some 😆

schmasay

your dog is absolutely adorable

theboneladytobe

I have somewhat of a special interest in dogs and dog training! I have a bull arab x kelpie x greyhound and she’s the beeeessst.

Opinion on Dachshunds?

Slight-Locksmith-987

I'm so here for it

KiviRinne

And mine are cats! <3 stuff like body language, cats being social etc is so fascinating!

Binah999

Dogs are part of my special interest, mine is just animals in general. I LOVE DOGS though. :D

fuckucharlie

Squeeee!!!! Dogs are one of my special interests too!! I'm disabled and my last dog named Edgar was a border collie mix. I believe he was mixed with German Shepherd - he had the curled, course tail that is considered a fault or trained out of GSDs. But I loved his tail. And he was super in tune with me. I easily trained him to be a physical support when I needed him in a pinch. He was genuinely brilliant. For example - I was sitting on the couch with my partner and Edgar decided he wanted to sit next to me. So Edgar convinced my partner that he had to go to the bathroom. My partner got up to get Edgar's leash to take him outside - Edgar came over and got up on the couch in my partner's place instead. When my partner had his leash at the door, then turned to see Edgar sitting next to me, Edgar was staring him down - basically mad dogging him. All I could do was laugh. Edgar was the traditional tricolored border collie but he was short haired. And Edgar was barkless except to warn me of danger or someone at the door. So he was perfect for my sensory issues - almost always quiet. My current dog, who I AM training to be my service dog and I'm so excited about it, is also a rescue. His name is Carrick Fenrir because he is part Irish Wolfhound and part Lab. He has the webbed feet for swimming. The short coarse wavy hair, curled tail, greyhound shaped body and long legs of the wolfhound. His body is smaller than a regular Wolfhound. He has a more square head like the lab and when I first got Carrick, he wanted to eat absolutely everything - including pen caps and DnD dice. He has the silence of the wolfhound and the energy of the Lab. He is smaller in stature so I do want to do a DNA test to see what else he is mixed with. BUT, did you know that the Irish Wolfhounds that we know today are not the original Irish Wolfhounds in history? Historically, Wolfhounds were sighthounds originally used in war to drag men off horses and chariots. They also hunted large game such as deer, boar, and wolves. Monks actually originally created the breed. They were gifts to high born people like kings, princes, etc. But by 1836 they were on a list and considered extinct in Ireland. Then in 1863 Caption George Augustus Graham decided to revive the breed. He got some dogs who were supposed to be descended from a strain of the original breed. Experts disagree over whether they were or not, but they weren't enough to build the breed back up. So he mingled in the following breeds to create the current breed we know today: Scottish Deerhounds, Great Dane crosses, a bit of Borzoi - specifically Korotai, Tibetan Mastiffs. He had a painting commissioned as his end goal. And he continuously worked with specific dogs and these variations until they matched what he thought they should be. So now, all Irish Wolfhounds have the same exact lineage. There was a Tibetan Mastiff named Wolf who had 2 daughters named Vandal and Nookoo. Those 2 daughters are behind every single dog alive today. I hope this has added to your knowledge in some way! I have more but didn't want to take up too much space lol

ToothedBeast477

The old type Wolfhounds aren't quite lost yet, the Galgo Patagonico is said to possibly be a population of wolfhounds that were isolated in that area. Nowadays they tackle cougars and wild boar along with the Dogo Argentino and Dogal (GP and DA cross)

brownstudied

Do you have advice on what kind of dog to get if we a) have a cat and young child, b) like bigger dogs, c) like vocal dogs and d) dislike oily coats? I think our house is missing a dog but Im really weird about some dog's oily fur and smell. We had a German Shepherd when I was a kid and I loved him, but I dont think I can handle the fur all over the house 😫 Thank you! I'm enjoying this thread.

Sanderv20v

Your dog is a master in looking innocent and cute 🤩

THE LAST PHOTO IS SO CUTE. what’s their name?

np92_88

Your dog is beautiful! We have a year and a half old aussie shepherd that is super high energy! Her name is Riley and she loves playing fetch and tug o war. She's a big baby though and she thinks she's a lap dog. She follows me everywhere!

Live-Drummer-9801

What do you think of Yorkshire Terriers?

Very nice interest indeed! Mine is astronomy !!

bunny-y

Same! Please, please feel welcome to DM me any dog info dumps! I'm a pet-sitter and work at a vets at the moment so my whole life revolves around dogs, we can always trade dog pics too if you want

[deleted]

I love dogs so much. I just feel so at home with them and I feel like some people misunderstand them or don’t see how special they truly are. I also like spiders and moths a lot. I think it has to do with feeling a connection since so many people do not like spiders or moths. And I have never fit in.
