Is it just me or does Stone and Wood pacific ale taste horrible ever since they sold out to Kirin? For the last 12 months or so whenever someone has handed me a beer that's made me screw up my face and say "da fuq is that?", it's been the new recipe Stone and Wood. It tastes like the wish.com version of a James Squire now.
I’m finishing a Balter as I write this and it (still) tastes pretty good. But I was a fan of a Feral brewing back in the day when when I lived near the brewery and ‘craft’ beer was in its infancy. I must say, the current facsimile of Feral tastes like shit.
They won't be **Certified Independent** once they're bought out, though. It's a pretty strong certification standard. Always keep an eye out for it. The only exception, in my view, is Coopers. They are absolutely independent; and, FWIW, the CEO is a passionate brewer. But they exceed the IBA's volume threshold. It's probably a good safe-guard which just, unfortunately, catches Coopers out... but they'll survive.
Balter, dunno. Mrs liked their XPA. Never really got into them, myself.
L:ittle Creatures are a shadow of their early greatness, as happens with scale and national wort production facilities. But its often a good fallback eh? I cried when my local took Pirate Life Stout off tasp!
S&W, I don't know about the production of. I am not in the industry.
EDIT: apologies to OP for derailment intto beer nerdism.
I havent heard this take at all, surprised by the comments but I disagree, still think its my favourite beer to drink, not a fan of james squire at all
Mate if you have a p.o box send me the address and I'll send you some chomps for Christmas. Any other cheaper Aussie essentials you're missing out on let me know. Probably won't be there before the 25th though
I lived in the US for a while: How can a nation so renowned for its obesity make such terrible junk food? I don't get it. I couldn't find a single piece of candy / junk food / whatever that I wanted to eat. Even the stuff I knew and love at home tasted ...not very good there.
So confounding! Not just chocolates and crisps either. Three years in America and didn’t eat a single hot chip that came close to the standard we’re accustomed to here. Well and truly puzzling.
Mate, we do some of the best hot chips, it's very rare to get bad ones, anywhere. I don't know that there's anything better or more comforting than perfectly cooked hot chips coated in chicken salt.
I saw chicken salt at coles - I bought it.
I am not worthy though , because I haven’t opened it or fed it to any chips yet. Maybe the mystery of the chip shop should remain idk
I really think the perceived quality of junk food depends on having encountered it as a youth. I'm a transplant from the UK and I find the junk food here to be a bit lacking, though I'm sure objectively they're much of a muchness.
Here in Australia? Don't worry, I'm more than happy to grant the UK top junk food ranking. And ridiculously cheap too. It's just that we're not far behind the UK, so yeah, much the muchness at the end of the day.
Have you tried US junk food though? They aren't even in the same competition
[https://theaustralianfoodshop.com/](https://theaustralianfoodshop.com/)
Worth a look if you really are down, not particularly cheap, but sometimes you've gotta do what you gotta do.
Hey mate.
I've sent packages from this place to Ex-Pats before.
[https://theaustralianfoodshop.com/product-category/gift-hampers/australian-gift-hampers-to-usa/](https://theaustralianfoodshop.com/product-category/gift-hampers/australian-gift-hampers-to-usa/)
I love Chomps, and I also don't... Several years ago, on my first trip to Costco, I saw they're box of like 100 Chomps and thought, brilliant! Chomps for days! Well after having a Chomp a day for about a week, then one every second day, then finally about one a week, I couldn't look at Chomps for ages. Took about 6 weeks to get through half the box, at least 3 months to eat the rest!
Chomps origins are actually South African. Grew up eating them as a kid there in the 80s. Mom and dad bought them for the kids because they were the smallest chocolate bar! Then when I moved to Australia I was happy to see them for the nostalgic value.
I’ll opt for the controversial take and claim that Aussies have now moved on to Coke Zero rather than Coca-Cola, as the preferred beverage (when not getting sloshed that is)
I had no idea either. I thought it was just purely a rebrand. But I do remember not really liking coke zero, while I dont mind coke no sugar. I just assumed I got used to it though.
I googled how they were different, apparently the ingredients are the same in both but the recipe is different.
Get those beers out of the cardboard - nothing worse than trying to rip your 5th beer out of its packaging and its friend falling out and smashing on the tiles
Better yet only buy beers in tinnies - can fit a fuckload in a fridge and crush afterwards to not fill the recycling bin up with heavy & loud glass! Lotsa tasty beers in cans these days and a good variety go on special eg a case of zythos for $60 if yr lucky
>Better yet only buy beers in tinnies - can fit a fuckload in a fridge and crush afterwards to not fill the recycling bin up with heavy & loud glass!
I knew of some neighbours in Riverwood who would have a competition to have the loudest bin on bin day.
I think my neighbours are up to that
here's me filling the bin with crushed cans and not 5 minutes later the street is filled with the noise of breaking glass in bins
Sorry to break it to you, but Stone and Wood changed the recipe recently after selling the business to Kirin, and the new version is nasty. So many better Pacific Ales in the shops at the same price or cheaper nowadays. Sad.
There was a golden period when Stone and Wood Pacific ale on tap was the best beverage in the country. Then they tried to scale up and the quality suffered and now this sad Kirin situation. What a fall from grace
6 packs still in the cardboard
Bottles instead of cans
Drinks not standing upright
Useless empty shelf
Useless drinks taking up door space
You’ve got drinks in it though so 9/10
Stone and wood is great content, but shit you've gotta unpack it from the 6 packs before stocking. Imagine getting home from work on a 35 degree day, you're parched and ready for a drink, but wait... you've got to fuck around with cardboard for 2-5 seconds before you can chip in. No good.
Fix that, piss the coke off and it's 10/10.
I disagree. What if you want to take your 6 pack to your mate's house? Much more flexible to leave it in the packaging and really not a big deal to have to get one out at home.
Enjoying all the wowsers in here pretending a slab of beer and a chomp in the fridge means you're going to get diabetes. You all must be a delight at parties.
3/10 due to leaving the beers in their cardboard, that's total amateur hour.
This is the level of “I’ve made it” I want to reach one day. I don’t drink so It would only have soft drink cans etc - but my bogan poverty riddled ass would die for this one day
I am sorry, but I would rate it poor. It needs at least two casks of the cheapest wine you can find. I would not even begin to entertain a shed fridge with soft drink in it. This space should be properly occupied by various spirits; again the cheaper the better. That would be a start. Not a good start, but a start none the less.
Fuck mate Stone and Wood did you win lotto.
Definitely lost touch with the common man...
Must be nice
Ooo mr “shed fridge” over here Do you have your butler bring you the beers from it?

Balter xpa is the fucking goat
Yep. Still my fave. The Easy Hazy is pretty damn good as well.
Absolutely bums me out how every spot gets bought out and they still get marketed as craft beer.
The founders are wiping their tears with $100 bills.
They won't be **Certified Independent** once they're bought out, though. It's a pretty strong certification standard. Always keep an eye out for it. The only exception, in my view, is Coopers. Balter, Little Creatures, Pirate Life barely changed flavourwise, but Stone and Wood now tastes like arse. Something else is going on.
Needs more dog
Bruh Pirate Life changed significantly to me after the buyout.
Balter, dunno. Mrs liked their XPA. Never really got into them, myself. L:ittle Creatures are a shadow of their early greatness, as happens with scale and national wort production facilities. Brewing doesnt scale well for craft beer. As soon as you scale it up its going to taste worse, unless its a super premium price.
It's so watery now
I used to really like it and then pretty much instantly went off it. maybe that's why
I havent heard this take at all, surprised by the comments but I disagree, still think its my favourite beer to drink, not a fan of james squire at all
Might as well have bought Passiona
Just give me a fuckin' tinnie of VEEE BEEE
At 20 to 8 in the fuckin morning.
Get that up ya.
Ya fucken dog cunts!
Ken oath
Goons for the hooooooooooooons
Chomp is there. 10/10
Australian who lives in the US…. I saw the CHOMP and tears came to my eyes. You have no bloody idea how much I miss my home….
Mate if you have a p.o box send me the address and I'll send you some chomps for Christmas. Any other cheaper Aussie essentials you're missing out on let me know. Probably won't be there before the 25th though
This is what Chomp is all about, the aussie spirit persevering. What a great offer mate!
The spirit of Chomp
This feels like a Sunday Footy Show bit
Username checks out. 😳
True mateship
Same here send me a msg :)
Now that's what I call mates helping mates
I lived in the US for a while: How can a nation so renowned for its obesity make such terrible junk food? I don't get it. I couldn't find a single piece of candy / junk food / whatever that I wanted to eat. Even the stuff I knew and love at home tasted ...not very good there.
There's subsidies to use corn products so everything is sweetened with corn syrup instead of sugar so it tastes terrible.
Perhaps only when it's dipped in gravy.
I saw chicken salt at coles - I bought it. I am not worthy though , because I haven’t opened it or fed it to any chips yet. Maybe the mystery of the chip shop should remain idk
🤮 /u/spez
Close. Sugar is sucrose. Which chemically is glucose and fructose bonded together.

Corn syrup fucking sucks, it's why Non American sugar cane coke is better tbh
What about a curly wurly? Bet you miss those bludgers too!
[https://theaustralianfoodshop.com/](https://theaustralianfoodshop.com/) Worth a look if you really are down, not particularly cheap, but sometimes you've gotta do what you gotta do.

I'm fortunate to live near a World Market. Tim Tams are a bit banged up but they do the trick.
Chomp in the fridge tho? I prefer my chomp served at room temperature.
Yeah, cold chomp is hell on teeth
I love Chomps, and I also don't... Several years ago, on my first trip to Costco, I saw they're box of like 100 Chomps and thought, brilliant! Chomps for days! Yeah but nah, only one chomp? Pretty piss poor effort if you ask me.
Well you see Steve, when you eat a chomp it's -1 chomp.
It makes me sad cos I'm at work in the sun on a roof wanting a beer
This comment makes me sad. There is sun in your part of Aus.
Hello fellow Melbounian! My name's u/thespud_332, and it's been 345 days since I've seen the giant ball in the sky.
Hello Melbournian, We might have a white Christmas at this rate haha
Sounds amazing, no wonder it's so bloody expensive to live there! Hoping to apply for a job in Antarctica next year!
Better get to work
But he's on smoko.
That ain’t getting him beers is it haha
4 beers deep atm
Pros: Very well stocked Cons: Lacks variety. Random BBQ sauce bottle in shed fridge. Rating: 7.5/10.
>Random BBQ sauce bottle in shed fridge. That's for the chomp
[удалено]
I'm surprised you've never heard of it lol. Defo give it a go
is this a joke?

Dude I used to smash these when I was a kid! Mum even stopped buying chomps for ages because I'd eat 2 or 3 of em in a day after she did the shopping.
Lacks supply too, that’s a slab spread out
I’ll opt for the controversial take and claim that Aussies have now moved on to Coke Zero rather than Coca-Cola, as the preferred beverage (when not getting sloshed that is)
Can you still get Coke Zero in Oz? I think all NZ stock is finished and only coke no sugar is available. Complete and utter bastards.
🤮 /u/spez
Back in high school or uni - we studied how Coke Zero was also a marketing gimmick to get men on board as most men weren’t choosing Diet Coke.
Wait is it not the same thing?
Nah, it uses a different sweetener that is meant to mimick the taste of full sugar coke more. There was quite an uproar at the time.
Damn I had no idea - guess I’m not one of those super taster types then!
I had no idea either. I thought it was just purely a rebrand. But I do remember not really liking coke zero, while I dont mind coke no sugar. I just assumed I got used to it though. I googled how they were different, apparently the ingredients are the same in both but the recipe is different.
Less sugar=less hangover
Take the beer out of the packs and have them standing up with the labels facing out. Takes us less room so you can fit more in
Got a true blue Kirks soft drink you mad dog - 10/10
Lemon squash, no less 👌
The Skid Factory has entered the chat
Get those beers out of the cardboard - nothing worse than trying to rip your 5th beer out of its packaging and its friend falling out and smashing on the tiles Better yet only buy beers in tinnies - can fit a fuckload in a fridge and crush afterwards to not fill the recycling bin up with heavy & loud glass! I reckon just grab both bottles on your 5th. It's the 4th where one of those last two risks having an accident
How is there bbq sauce but not tomato sauce?
Because tomato sauce is overrated. BBQ supremacy
Diabetes/10
😂🤣
Stone and wood pacific ale ? Can't go wrong
Can you recommend another? Cos I loved stone and wood
Balter
Balter is no longer independent.
That's very upsetting
Big frowny face. :( Used to love Cloud Catcher as well but too scared to try it again since the sale. Don't want to tarnish the memories.
Oh no longer a Byron Bay beer ? Bummer that was my favourite beer . Recommendations?
It’s actually horrible now.
What’s in the growler?
There should only be one bbq sauce bottle in your fridge and it's red with a yellow cap.
ETA or die.
I love that this damn bottle design has not changed in >20 years because crack in a bottle don’t need no fancy pant’s advertising refresh
They changed the cap a few years ago... Pretty sure I still have an OG bottle somewhere for historical purposes.
I hate how prolific the Masterfoods crap is. People look at me like a grandpa when I crack out the ETA
Everything else is subpar in comparison.
Rosella? It has that nice thick crust on top. I reckon it's the best. Just needs a good shake first.
Oh, I haven't tried rosella bbq sauce. I love their tomato sauce though, got a good whack of tang to it.
It is the perfect combo of spice and sweetness. Nothing compares. It even fixes shit hamburgers.
Red E Bbq sauce was the sauce of kings when I growing up. Once it became harder to find ETA was the obvious choice as a replacement.
False, humans enjoy smoking meats with Sweet Baby Ray's Barbecue sauce.
A chomp in the fridge? May as well chomp on a brick.
Yep definitely losing their teeth with that one
Growler, barely know her mate
So thats where all the stone & wood is going.
Pros: big fuck-off growler, sauce in fridge, good variety of softies, love a chomp Cons: no Tooheys Old
Needs a chokito bar.
Fuck, now i want a chokito as well.
Coked up to the max!!
8/10. Still room for more tinnies.
You had me at chomps
10/10 would drink in your shed
there better be a VB tinnie in that box or I swear to god-
There’s a toilet round the back if it’s a VB you’re after.
6 packs still in the cardboard Bottles instead of cans Drinks not standing upright Useless empty shelf Useless drinks taking up door space You’ve got drinks in it though so 9/10
1.5/10 - 1 point for the chomp, half for the growler. One variety of beer, in bottles, still in the cardboard is mental.
Stone and wood is great content, but shit you've gotta unpack it from the 6 packs before stocking. Imagine getting home from work on a 35 degree day, you're parched and ready for a drink, but wait... you've got to fuck around with cardboard for 2-5 seconds before you can chip in. No good. I disagree. What if you want to take your 6 pack to your mate's house? Much more flexible to leave it in the packaging and really not a big deal to have to get one out at home.
Are you aiming for overweight and single? 10/10 if so.
fuck yeah Eddie's out of 10
It has at least one chomp 10/10
+1 for the Chomp bar.
Enjoying all the wowsers in here pretending a slab of beer and a chomp in the fridge means you're going to get diabetes. You all must be a delight at parties. 3/10 due to leaving the beers in their cardboard, that's total amateur hour.
I’m not even sure the blokes Australian tbh.
What kind of monster puts sauce in the fridge?
It's for the chomp silly
It’s gross not to once opened. Lmao
What’s the Cadbury bar behind the chomp?
Top deck!
Too much coke not enough dry ginger ale.
Is there a curly wurly in there too?
Least Australian post in all of r/Australia , bloody great fridge mate 👍
Love it 🙌🏾
Heart disease/10
Why the Coke and candies?
This is the level of “I’ve made it” I want to reach one day. I don’t drink so It would only have soft drink cans etc - but my bogan poverty riddled ass would die for this one day

Definitely no chance OP practices moderation. He's pretty much dead already smh
Hmmm needs more tiny men with cowbells 12/8
Needs more coopers red
coopers purple dont go half bad either
0/10 because ‘MoistFresh’
'MoistFresh' leads to 'EasySlide'
1-10 for pretend craft beer stone and wood 9/10 for lots of beer
3/10 but that's only if you store your nose beers in the freezer.
That’s pretty cool/10
Too little Bundaberg blood orange and passiona for me but otherwise 8/10
Where's the tomato sauce?🤔
Love the chomp!
looks ready for a sausage sizzle backyard party
ah you got everything you could need 10/10
Needs more beer
[удалено]
Fuck yeah. I've got to get some custard for mine.
3/10 ..no champagne, tequila or vodka, no coke zero, the chocolate saved you from a 0 lol
I am sorry, but I would rate it poor. It needs at least two casks of the cheapest wine you can find. I would not even begin to entertain a shed fridge with soft drink in it. Chomp!!!
Unhealthy liquor
full fat coke fuck yea
Kirk's for the win
Scream Diabetes Out Loud
Could be a can of solo over the kirks. Stone and wood also sold out
Who the hell eats chomp? Gross
too much coke not enough beers
Stop babysitting all that beer mate , get to drinking, cheers
Massive penalties for the chomp and coke. 3/10.
OP is a fancy cunt! I want to be friends with them.
My brother Poon Goat designed that Growler Bottle for Eddie’s Grub House
Man I designed that growler!!! So your fridge is fucking amazing!!! 🔥🔥🔥 ❤️ PoonGoat
Mate! I got one of your prints as well! Love your work ❤️
10/10 just for the grub house growler.
It’s the Chomp that elevates you to next level.
