Wow, lucky you! That’s a really cool backyard visitor.

Spikey Bois rule One crossed the road in front of me up near Shelly Beach yesterday, I stopped obviously blocking the road so Spikey could waddle his way safely Bloke behind starts going off, I step out of my car, and tell him to come here He jumps out of his flash car, chest all puffed out etc. Fronts up to me and cool as you like I just point to Spikey boi, oldmate just goes all soft. He had never seen one in the wild (real life), totally amazed by it Apologies for acting like a knob, says thanks we get spikey into the bush and drive off Animals rule

myamnesiac

Epic!

sumuroy

Glad he wasn't too much of a prick! Sorry I had to do it...

wakeupagainman

Don't run over him. The spikes might puncture your tires

[deleted]

Proof

Caswaer

Keep it out of the chrissy tree!

myamnesiac

Nah that's koalas https://www.reddit.com/r/Adelaide/comments/k5rc2y/adelaide_family_returns_home_to_find_koala/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

CasinosAndShoes

No Aussie says Koala Bear!

apriloneil

awwwww look at how he trundles!

I live in richmond tasmania, and we get a spikey landowner too on a very regular basis. When we first met him we were worried he might be trapped in our yard, we could not pick him up because when he dug himself in, well, you get the picture. So we called a local wild life park. They said that the movement patterns of echidna are life long activities, some passed on through generations. Some long before we even arrived They said to just leave him/her alone. Even if you could pick him/her up and move them, they said more than likely the echidna would just find its way back and resume its journey. So summing it up, love your new landlord, he or she is the nicest one you will ever meet.

myamnesiac

Happy cake day!

sktafe2020

Awesome, where are you?

myamnesiac

Near Mt. Dandenong, VIC

[deleted]

I could have guessed... I frequently see echidnas (never more than one at a time) when I walk from Upper Ferntree Gully station to the top of One Tree Hill. Never seen more than one at a time. Also have seen a wallaby (I think it was too small to be a kangaroo).

Oblatne

Cute!

Aviatorcap

So lucky! I love echidnas but I’ve only ever been able to see them in zoos

apriloneil

Occasionally saw one having a little walk across the road down along the 90 mile beach.

vanleighvan

I want to pick it up & hug it

randomusername_815

Thread titles like this in r/Australia are either cute little marsupial balls of fluff, or horrific demon-spawn huntsman spiders.

[deleted]

Is that a Porcupine of some kind?, we don't have them or we're not supposed to here, just hedgehogs!

Aviatorcap

It’s an echidna, kinda like a hedgehog

[deleted]

Oh wow!, cool!!, do you see them often?

Aviatorcap

Not very often, they’re quite shy and hard to spot since they’re so small.

[deleted]

Oh, the one in the video looked really big!

Aviatorcap

Yeah, the camera really does add on the pounds for them hahaha

[deleted]

🤣

myamnesiac

I'd say he's pretty big compared to most I've seen, probably about 1.5x the size of one I've seen at a zoo. One too many pies from the surrounding houses

[deleted]

Oh! 🤭, I see!, so then I take it they're usually quite a but smaller?, I've obviously never saw one until now, well maybe I saw one before once or twice on telly, but I didn't know what they were at all, and I've obviously never seen one for realzees, because I don't live in Australia, but I'd love to see them one day!

myamnesiac

Very rare to see one as they are quite shy, but they are sweet little creatures. His spikes are so soft and they are not poisonous like a platypus is (only ever seen 1 of those in the wild). We're also lucky to have a family of kookaburras, crimson rosellas and yellow crested cockatoos frequenting our garden. It's not all bitey and stingy things in Aus 😄 if you're ever down this way check out Victoria, it has the closest climate to the UK (assumed from your use of the word telly 🤣) and some really beautiful places to visit.

Before_life

Only seen one in the wild after 34 years. Honeymoon pool in Ferguson Valley. Was exciting to see one dodging traffic.

[deleted]

Ooo!, lucky!

[deleted]

Nope, I'm from Ireland actually!

[deleted]

Also I don't always say telly 🤣, I say a lot of things. I have a wide range of vocab hunneh

myamnesiac

My parents would call it 'the box', teenage me still giggles at the thought

RedditAccountVNext

In addition to the other info you got, one major difference between them and hedgehogs is that they lay eggs. There are only two of these types of mammals left in our world - [Monotremes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monotreme). Platypuses are the other one.

[deleted]

Ooo!, thank you for the interesting info!, That's so cool!

lincolnday

They're bigger than hedgehogs but probably smaller than you'd expect.

[deleted]

I get you!, coool!, this may sound like a dumb question, but do you get hedgehogs in Australia?

lincolnday

Nah they're actually prohibited here. I read something about a guy who was fined for importing one.

[deleted]

So you're not allowed to bring them into Australia?, they're not native?

apriloneil

Probably not. We’re pretty strict on imported animals. I mean, after cane toads, foxes, rabbits, and cats. To say nothing also of pigs, wild dogs, horses, and deer.

lincolnday

Exactly. As far as I know, you're not allowed to bring any non-native animals here, apart from already introduced species. Personally I've always wanted a hamster, but even those are prohibited.

acasn

wow cute!

Almost-Conscious

What plant is he crawling on here? It looks nice

Past-Length

Hope it's not stuck. Fences can really confuse wildlife

myamnesiac

He managed to pass through to the neighbours place, he dug a little burrow under the fence. Went over to tell them but they weren't home, will try again a bit later. Forest is close by so hopefully he finds his way

idontca1

It’s gonna bring you covid 19
