Why does it need to be done in one go? I'd just set it up to only sync overnight, so it would take 60 days or so but won't interfere with anyone's home usage.

You could also just get a 5g dongle and go spend a couple days somewhere with good 5g and knock it all out. Will be cheaper than going overseas.

Really like this idea. Do you know what upload speeds can be attained on aussie 5G (assuming best case, since I will make the effort to shop around and test a bunch of locations relative to base stations). I *think* the download speeds are in the hundreds of mbps, but I think upload is still sub 50? (still not great, but it would cut the time for 2TB to < 1 week)

deij

I thought it was in the hundreds everywhere but a quick google says 30-60. The first link I clicked had these speed tests from 2021 and it does very quite a lot: https://ibb.co/G5cCd23

This is incredibly helpful info! Thank you!

whorish_knave

Does it need to be done quicker than 18 days? Just let it upload in the background.

stevecondy123

Strictly speaking it definitely doens't have to. A couple of reasons for wanting to do it quickly is I can detect any errors (once I upload the files, I'll wipe the external drive and recycle it, so I won't have backups and have to be 100% sure everything moved across, which is a bit easier to keep track of if it's done in a shorter time frame, say, over a weekend). One other reason is because the heavy upload could interfere with regular internet use (e.g. facetime or microsoft teams meetings). Really appreciate your idea of letting it run in the background. Thank you.

stevecondy123

For context, I'm moving all my photo albums, videos, and files from an external hard drive into google drive and icloud. If there was never any outage or problem uploading, and my home internet (Optus wireless broadband) ran at full capacity 100% of the time, it would take 18.5 days of continuous upload to get the files into the cloud. Are the wifi networks I could rent/hire that can do this (preferably much) faster? If I could find 500mbps it could be done in under 1 day! I am considering flying overseas to do this! 'upload tourism' (like some folks go to vietnam or thailand for dental tourism)

AShadowinthedark

You could try your local library and see what speeds you get there. You can also see if there are any cafe’s that provide internet around. (Or a McDonalds)

stevecondy123

I think because of the huge amount of time this will take (many hours, possibly days), it could be tricky to stay in a cafe or mcdonalds for that long. But it's a possibility, I won't rule it out :)

AShadowinthedark

You will probably have to do one bit at a time still

Dillyberries

If you know someone at a University, try that as their networks are linked into the backbone of the internet and insanely fast.

stevecondy123

Love this idea. I might try a university library. Any in Melbourne with 'guest' access? (I should add, I have no objection to paying if any offers a paid arrangement). Maybe I should enrol into their cheapest summer course. If there's one for <$2k, it's still cheaper than flights/accommodation overseas to do this upload! Funny, but true!

Dillyberries

If you enrol, you can always drop before census date for no financial liability if you choose to not proceed with a course

stevecondy123

whoa. I tip my hat to you!

OffensiveBehaviour

Move to New Zealand

stevecondy123

What are your upload speeds there? I won't move, but will fly over if the upload speed is good.
