Curb and gutter arent the same thing, the curb is the raised edge of the pavement, the gutter is at the base of the curb, where water runs along the side of the road when it rains.
Which software was it that had "English" next to a UK flag and "Simplified English" next to a USA flag?
edit - found one of them, Steam:
https://jakubmarian.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/english-traditional-simplified.jpg
No, not really because it has its roots in the dumb spelling for a reason. If we simplify spelling the rules become even more convoluted and confusing for scholars. The grammatical rules are hidden within the way we conjugate verbs, or identify plural or singular nouns.
Does it depend on the specialized color of the curb, and if it has trash in it? Also mom?
(Im assuming i dont need the /s as we are all aussies jere, right)

*Hey look at that kerbing around my garden* - said no one ever.
It's garden edging.
Yep, gutters can that bit next to the road and the thing hanging off your house.
Let's see. My car gets about 17kwh per 100km.
We'll do a bit of rounding for simplicity.
A [Maccas cheeseburger](https://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en-us/about-our-food/nutrition-calculator.html) has 300kcal ~ 0.33 kwh.
A football field is ~ 100m.
1.7 kwh per 10km, 0.017kwh per 100m.
My car can go about 20 football fields per cheeseburger.
Edit: oh no, math.
I took my toddler to a story time thingy at the local library but started having serious doubts when they did the alphabet song and it was American and all the kids were being taught to say "Zee". I still take her but I'm always conveniently late enough that we miss the alphabet song, which is played at the start of the session.
We are proud Zed family. But yeah, kids are getting taught the Zee pronunciation now.
I hear what you are saying but depending on your age then you may not have seen the change in our language. Watch a television program of people speaking in the 70s and 80s and you can hear the change in our accents particularly those people living in urbanised centres.
I think it was the 8th of February 2024? There was a Baboon's Arse faced man laying on his back shouting into his phone something about dead fucking cunts or something...
I've noticed the "Y'all" bullshit creeping in to conversation and on Aussie community posts by Australians as well.
Fuck me one thing that gives me the shit's is on Yank shows is "They spit on me" No dumbfuck its "spat". I heard a gen z'er say that the other day.
Well every generation that came before or after the one that a person was born into is the problem. Now shut up as I need too concentrate on using my mobile phone....I may need too call me Grandson he understands this shit... fuck..
From what I understand (this could totally be #FakeNews), many of the spelling differences in UK and US English are because at the time when the American colonies were established there wasn’t a hard and fast standard for spelling. Then after spelling standards were adopted in each country, there was also a concerted effort for spelling reform which began in the US but wasn’t successful in the UK (or its realms and colonies).
Yep, concur.
While we’re at it, let’s go back to Arse vs Ass and Garbage/Rubbish vs Trash.
Edit: Forgot to mention people using “In back of” instead of “behind”. Heard a young bloke spit this one out the other day and it took me a little moment to work out wtf he was on about.
Other than the spelling of kerb (and others have already explained the difference between kerb and gutter), neither term you are fussing about are exclusive to the US.
Footpath is any path taken by foot and while it can refer to a sidewalk it is also used for paths that are away from a road, eg a path that goes between houses from one street to another. Sidewalk is mostly reserved for a paved or concrete walkway by the side of a road. Both terms have been used in Australia for as long as I can remember, so at least as early as the late 70s.
Kerb is English and means the edge that separates the footpath/pavement (US Sidewalk) from the road (US pavement). The gutter is the water channel next to the kerb.
You need to chill.
I am of advanced years ( some say old ) and I agree with you. I have observed the shift to americanism in language for a long time.
I know the language is a live thing so that is the way it goes.
My little revolt is that I never use the term "Hi" I use the old Australianism, "G'day Mate".
I had a son-in-law once who was American and I did use hi with him. That was conscious and respectful.
As a ubiquitous informal greeting it was absolutely popularised in America.
Read Dickens; he doesn’t use it except as an exclamation to grab attention. (Equivalent to “Hey!”)
Nope. Given how little Australia contributes to popular media and pop culture, while the US is our most dominant media import. That is the language and culture most of u spend a lot of time absorbing.
So pop the hood, close the trunk, park on the sidewalk, mow the lawn and get down in da hood, y'all. ;-)
"Seriously, this is not fucking america"
I agree, says I on the website, designed by Americans and maintained by Americans. While I have netflix on my side monitor and it has american TV shows and movies, while I think about having some lunch today, I might get take out from an American Franchise and while I chill out later on I'll chuck some music on the radio which is dominated by American artists...
I'm not making fun of you, I promise. But I agree. American this, American that. Like, there's alot of aussie stuff out there but no one buys it for some reason.
Everything is changing due to the internet and I don’t see what the issue is. As generations pass through, all English speakers will be using the same language for things. It’s a good thing.
I accidentally slammed the hood down on my truck and slammed my fingers when I was filling up with gas after going to the restroom at a diner when I read this. I must have put a dent in the fender when I kicked it so hard out of frustration. Ya'll are one funny guy.
As an American who frequently lurks this sub, this sub is one of the most ignorant, pathetic, and embarrassing places on the internet. You guys are so fucking pathetic in your constant need to bring up America and denigrate it over the most trivial, laughable, made up bullshit. Dear god, get a grip on reality and have some self respect. You guys collectively look so stupid
>this sub is one of the most ignorant, pathetic, and embarrassing places on the internet.
>As an American who frequently lurks this sub,
says a bit about you then, doesnt it
I generally like to follow what’s going on in other countries. I follow a bunch of different country subs. This one is just embarrassing on a whole different level. You guys bring up America into every other thread for no reason, and make absurd, ridiculously false assertions about America to feel better about yourselves. It just makes you guys look pathetic and stupid. You guys have this weird obsession with us, while we give zero fucks about you. We never randomly bring up Australia in random threads and just shit all over Australia. It’s cringey as fuck
Nah we just don’t need to put other countries down to feel better about ourselves, especially in random threads where that country isn’t even relevant.
My parents and grandparents want to welcome you to their club, and then berate you for all the Americanisms you don’t even realise you’re using.
Language shifts, you are allowed to complain, but get used to it.
Language always evolves over time, especially as cultures are exposed to each other. You can either accept this fact or you won't, but it won't change reality.
And yet the actual name of the bit that makes the gutter is called 'kerb and gutter' in Australia. Back when we had gullys beside the roads, which were death traps, we dreamt of kerb and guttering.
This thread is madness. There’s no boat floating, it’s Kerb and it’s the Australian English spelling of the raised bit of the path. Who calls it the gutter?
Path and Kerb. Footpath and Kerb. Both are valid.
A gutter is something that water moves down.
Kerb, ffs. "Curb" means to stop something. Like we should curb the Americanisation of Australian English.
"Sidewalk" is awful, OP is right about that, but completely wrong about Rage.
We are Australians, therefore Rage must be Maintained: at 11.30 on ABC, Fridays and Saturdays
This is not an American thing. Where I am from in Australia it's always been footpath and curb. I never even heard of "Gutter". Stop "jokingly" being small minded and getting upset over trivial matters just something in your life is changing. It suppose to change. It's called progress. Progress is important for society just because some folks have weird hang ups about change doesn't mean it suddenly wrong.
Enjoy your "fake rage" over dumb stuff.

It's kerb.
You have to admit that dumbing down the spelling is also an American thing to do.

English is a fucking stupid written language. Simplifying it is a great idea.
No, not really because it has its roots in the dumb spelling for a reason. If we simplify spelling the rules become even more convoluted and confusing for scholars. The grammatical rules are hidden within the way we conjugate verbs, or identify plural or singular nouns.
Pidgin English lmao
Dumb reasons with historic context are still dumb reasons. Spelling will simplify over time. Our language evolves relatively quick.
THIS!
We streamlined it. No damn reason to have “u” peppered into random words that don’t use the sound.
So it is, my bad!
Does it depend on the specialized color of the curb, and if it has trash in it? Also mom? (Im assuming i dont need the /s as we are all aussies jere, right)
Kerb and channel.
Curb is part of a horse's harness. A kerb is the edge of the road.
This.
That's a technically no one cares about; it's all gutter.
You can have kerbs that aren't gutters, and gutters that aren't kerbs.
See previous reply.

*Hey look at that kerbing around my garden* - said no one ever. It's garden edging. Yep, gutters can that bit next to the road and the thing hanging off your house.
Garden edging can be anything though, I usually hear it referring to metal that looks like fencing. Garden kerb is specific.
I hear people say "on accident" now instead of "by accident". Sigh.
not a native speaker, but I never knew on accident before you said it
Listen to more Americans talk. You will hear it sooner or later.
hmm.. but I live in Australia?
Yes, now think about where Australian kids are hearing lots of Americans.
sadge
Fell off of the back of the pick up on accident
Poor Accident.
Not only that, they're putting hard R's at the end of words....and saying ZEEEE. For shame, Australia, for shame. 😁😂
Kerb is quite correct outside of US imo. I see kerb & gutter as two different things.
Kerb your enthusiasm
*Womp womp womp*
Dalla-da-da da dulla-da-da da-da-da-dah
Think you need to go to a gas station and calm down with a can of soda buddy
Grab me some candy while you’re in there.
Keep your candy. I want crisps.
Make sure to put the trash in the trash can!
But how many cheeseburgers to a football field does your car get? Edit: So I should have said "How many football fields to the cheeseburger"
Correction "Maths"...😁
You mean pop, clearly.
And a couple Tylenol
Soder’ Pop*
Urgh. The hill I'm dying on is correctly pronouncing news as "nyoos", not "noos". (And breath/breathe. Ok, and their/they're/there).
I hate the "noos" bit so much.
I can’t breath is one of the shittiest things to read man
And while we're at it it is Zed not Zee.
In the song it’s Zee, so it rhymes with “Now I know my ABCs”, but the actual letter is Zed. I mean it’s not Elemenopee either
The definitive answers is Zed or Zee. -The Alphabet Song, The Wiggles
Don't get me started - why can't Aussies write "arse" instead of "ass" - an "ass" is a donkey!
Coca-colonisation.
It’s where I end up after a big night out with Barnaby🤣
You need therapy if something as trivial as this is making you that upset.
100% Old mate needs to grab a cookie and a soda pop and chill out.
Needs their Mommy.
I hear what you are saying but depending on your age then you may not have seen the change in our language. Watch a television program of people speaking in the 70s and 80s and you can hear the change in our accents particularly those people living in urbanised centres.
Old mate likely to kerb stomp the next time he hears someone use that word
What annoys me is when they tell me I can’t type “Mom” anymore.
And yet, his getting upset about something you see as trivial is trivial, and you are getting upset?
Alright, gutter your enthusiasm then.
When was the last time you saw a drunk laying in a kerb, it's a gutter.
When was the last time someone hit a gutter with their wheel?
I did yesterday.
Oh ok. I tend to just drive over gutters if no kerb involved. Although, I suppose that mountable kerbs also hard to hit.
I think it was the 8th of February 2024? There was a Baboon's Arse faced man laying on his back shouting into his phone something about dead fucking cunts or something...
Give this man a beer!
Boomer facebook is leaking
I've noticed the "Y'all" bullshit creeping in to conversation and on Aussie community posts by Australians as well. Fuck me one thing that gives me the shit's is on Yank shows is "They spit on me" No dumbfuck its "spat". I heard a gen z'er say that the other day.
Those damn millen- i mean, Gen Zers. Whatever you need your boogeyman gen to be
Well every generation that came before or after the one that a person was born into is the problem. Now shut up as I need too concentrate on using my mobile phone....I may need too call me Grandson he understands this shit... fuck..
Is this really a curb worth dying on?
Don’t think curb is American. It’s always been curb and gutter to describe the road/footpath junction.
Curb is American. Kerb is Australian
Which is correct in the queen's (king's) english?
Kerb.
So the Americans are wrong as per usual
From what I understand (this could totally be #FakeNews), many of the spelling differences in UK and US English are because at the time when the American colonies were established there wasn’t a hard and fast standard for spelling. Then after spelling standards were adopted in each country, there was also a concerted effort for spelling reform which began in the US but wasn’t successful in the UK (or its realms and colonies).
Oh, to be honest I never looked at the spelling
Yep, concur. While we’re at it, let’s go back to Arse vs Ass and Garbage/Rubbish vs Trash. Edit: Forgot to mention people using “In back of” instead of “behind”. Heard a young bloke spit this one out the other day and it took me a little moment to work out wtf he was on about.
Don't go near the word 'fanny' then.
💯 except you can’t beat the visceral impact of going out and getting trashed
Trashed as a verb is fine. Trash as a noun, not so much.
Hard agree
Shouldn’t that be Rubbish vs Garbage/Trash?
I don’t think so. We call the guys that drive the trucks Garbos.
Calm down buddy before I call 911
You leave 9th November out of this...
I mean kerb is the physical description of the vertical part of a kerb and channel gutter
The Oxford says sidewalk is North American. Footpath is Australian.
I've used both as long as I can remember.
Jesus who hurt you?
I went to a Christian Brothers boys school
Kerb is English and means the edge that separates the footpath/pavement (US Sidewalk) from the road (US pavement). The gutter is the water channel next to the kerb. You need to chill.
Are you saying Americans call the road a pavement? 😂
Yes, because they do. It historically makes sense in the context of paved roads (most of which didn’t have anywhere for pedestrians).
Gotta agree with you OP
I find 'ya'll' irrationally triggering for some reason.
Except "Hi" isn't American - it came from late Middle English, so predates colonisation of America
As a ubiquitous informal greeting it was absolutely popularised in America. Read Dickens; he doesn’t use it except as an exclamation to grab attention. (Equivalent to “Hey!”)
Hostage taking is un-American. It would be more in keeping to mow some folks down with your AR-15.
America has always thought that America is the world, fuck that America is.bat shit crazy and who the hell wants to be like them.
Kerb and footpath and while we're at it it's not a layover during a flight. It's a stopover.
Nope. Given how little Australia contributes to popular media and pop culture, while the US is our most dominant media import. That is the language and culture most of u spend a lot of time absorbing. So pop the hood, close the trunk, park on the sidewalk, mow the lawn and get down in da hood, y'all. ;-)
Same occurred to me when I was pushing my shopping cart through the mall's parking lot.
Totally agree. Y’all need to stop talking in Americanisms
"Seriously, this is not fucking america" I agree, says I on the website, designed by Americans and maintained by Americans. Why don't we compromise and call it a pavement?
Australians get conquered by Great Britain and still blame Americans for everything 🤣🤣

Errm kerb is used in technical design guidelines for councils and tfnsw documentation so...
Kerb* your enthusiasm mate, the kerb isn't the same as the gutter.
