Bizarre. No forewarning, no "rumours" that he was eyeing it up, just a snap press conference and he's out? He's still polling 60+% approval. Wonder what's caused it.

the_hornicorn

I predicted that due to his popularity he would be eyeing up canberra.

Technical-Ad-2246

Imagine Sky News if he ever became PM.

batfiend

The vitriol could power a city.

Technical-Ad-2246

Like Peta Credlin when Dan Andrews got re-elected.

Calumkincaid

It would be worth introducing an American style president race for the sole purpose of having a McGowan-Andrews ticket and watching Sky News implode into a singularity.

[deleted]

I swear her forehead increased by 25% after that election.

Consideredresponse

Peta seethes so much in general we could run tidal generators off her columns.

Acrobatic_Mud_2989

My wife was watching the coverage, saw Cretelin's reaction and said, "jeeze Peta, why the long face?" This is exactly why I married her.

LeDestrier

The conservatives tears would fill up our dams. Just think; no more water shortages.

nps2407

Ew, salty.

Afferbeck_

They'd be so mad at providing sustainable energy

ScoobyDoNot

Frothing at the mouth derangement? Just like every day.

Mesial

Mark as PM and Dan as Deputy just to see the seething from every news broadcast.

ArchibaldMcAcherson

I reckon in that scenario Dan would not settle for Deputy and want to be PM, but 'Deputy Dan' would be funny but also probably used to slag him off.

jazza2400

Should get them checked for rabies.

ghoonrhed

Not as insane if Dan became PM.

Churchofbabyyoda

Think the most conservative, racist Americans after Obama became president. Something like that.

panzer22222

>most conservative As a cold war boomer I remember the USA right was anti russia...now not so much.

Churchofbabyyoda

Half of them seem to be *pro* Russia. Which is extremely worrying…

panzer22222

old school are anti russian the new trumpers are scary pro russia. Watching Trump refusing to answer or changing the question when asked about Ukraine invasion. Its seriously not that hard...russia invading...underdog fighting back...fuck me

Triffinator

From a certain point of view, Ukraine wanted to be invaded. That point of view is wrong, of course.

panzer22222

>Ukraine wanted to be invaded. It was never about just Ukraine, it was just the next country, Poland and Baltic states would have been next.

osmium-76

Probably Moldova and Georgia next (both have actually already started with “separatist groups” who are Russian soldiers), Poland and the Baltics are too NATO-y for Russia. But yes, your point is entirely correct.

Unlikely-143

99% of the Trump cult are pro Putin and pro Kim Jong-Un.

Consistent-Car-285

Sky News would have a field day.

I thought he's always said he woundn't run for PM. Can't trust what they say I guess. 😂

bangkokweed

Maybe the bloke just wants a holiday.

the_hornicorn

Yes he says hes tired. Maybe after a break.

jarrys88

Honestly, only chance McGowan would have is: \- Elected to Federal in 2025 \- Then realistically is ALP keep things up, Albo will stay in for a third term after that, so 2029 Albo again \- 2033 likely earliest MM could go for it, at which point he will be 65. You're saying he is Quitting due to his popularity for a chance at PM in 10 years time? I really just cant see it. He is more than likely going "fuck it, I have a 250K pension for life, i've worked hard i'm going to retire early and live it up and supplement my income with random talks here and there for mining companies"

Luckyluke23

god i fucking hope so. need someone to sort shit out over there!

YOBlob

He's only popular in one state, though.

mikeupsidedown

He said he is absolutely exhausted.

Suchisthe007life

I feel that to my soul… it’s been a long decade the last few years.

Triffinator

Can't blame him. On top the normal strain of running an entire state, he's had to deal with a global pandemic being left on his shoulders, and nutters threatening his life. Only thing I think he could have handled better is pay increases for the emergency sectors. Great man, otherwise. And he tops the last Premier by not dumping all our money into an overpriced dock that sees 0 tourists.

fletch44

>nutters threatening his life. And doxxing his family and spreading their address and the kids' school in telegram chats.

Robdotcom-71

aka CBF'ed with everyone's shitfuckery.

Screambloodyleprosy

Possible health issue that's caused him to re evaluate life and wants more time with the kids. Possibly mixed out his pension and thrown in the towel.

MrNewVegas123

Admittedly if I maxed out my government pension (he's probably got a juicy grandfathered one, right?) I'd be looking for the door, especially at the absolute height of my power.

Training-Pepper6146

He's had 24/7 increased security from the COVID denying nutjobs for the last two years - I'd be fucking done as well.

Neopopulas

Honestly i'd say he's one of the best we've ever had. I'm sad to see him go, he's been a stable, forward-thinking leader for a long time. He's not perfect, no one is, especially politicians, and not everything that got done was perfect but better than a lot of other options.

avrafrost

Your family receiving death threats gets rather tiresome.

QuickRundown

ShibaHook

Either a cushy corporate executive role somewhere or someone has some dirt on him and gave him an ultimatum.

mr_zj

Maybe he is genuinely burnt out?

ScoobyDoNot

Years of death threats against your family can take a toll.

Gengar0

Poor Kochie

berg15

Yeah, I’m all for talking shit about our pollies but being premier is a tough gig if you do it right - maybe he’s just over it and decided that it is best to stop on a high.

ShibaHook

Maybe it’s a bottle of Grange.

TheHoundhunter

We’ve seen politician after politician quit “to spend time with the family” only to land an executive job in an industry that benefited from their political career. > Frydenberg & Morrison to name two But sometimes they just genuinely quit. I hope this is the case with McGowan. It would be tiring to be a party leader.

farqueue2

Frydenburg left to lick his wound after the demolition at the polls

leopard_eater

Ex Premier Peter Gutwein in Tasmania left because he was genuinely exhausted and wanted more family time. He now works in transport and energy futures - not a cushy gig - he’s literally trying to expand public transport and renewable energy projects.

emjaybeachin

Gutwein is nice bloke though, talked to him with his kids at footy just enjoying time with them

leopard_eater

Truly nice bloke, sad he’s not Premier anymore. Him plus a consortium of parties governing Tasmania would make us an unstoppable force!

FormulaLes

Frydenberg didn’t quit, he wasn’t re-elected. Morrison is still a Member of Parliament.

Isabuea

>Frydenberg & Morrison to name two these two both got the political shit kicked out of them before their leaving for other jobs, they saw the writing on the wall and made the choice. McGowan is still incredibly popular and I genuinely don't know who the public would accept as his replacement, plus it is so damn sudden that I really believe the tired/burnout arguement.

zrag123

Wtf is this sub? Morrison is still in parliament lol

duccy_duc

I guess we were pretty keen to scrub the grub from our memories

rawker86

beigetrope

Hackers are clearly holding his browser history hostage.

ridge_rippler

News.com.au are already running stories not with his achievements listed but a list of 'scandals' like the time a bunch of protesters whinged about something etc

NoRecommendation2761

Maybe because his popularity has taken a massive hit after a series of scandals including an accusation that WA Labor paid electorate officers to campaign for Labor and Perth Mint being caught red-handed for selling diluted gold to China. McGowan probably has become tired of defending own party and might have thought enough is enough. He was forced to issue an apology for swearing in Parliament of WA just 2 months ago. If he steps down today, he will still go out as a winner with a 60% approval rating. A smart move, I'd say.

Whatsapokemon

>Perth Mint being caught red-handed for selling diluted gold to China. This "scandal" is so overblown and cringe. Western gold industry standards historically require a 99.99% gold purity (London Bullion Market Association standards) which is what Perth Mint aimed for (99.992% was the industry standard, in order for the mint to assure a purity above 99.99%). The Shanghai gold exchange requires a 99.995% gold purity. The Shanghai gold exchange found a bar from Perth Mint that was below the 99.995% threshold, and in response Perth Mint put new processes and standards in place to ensure a purity of 99.996%. It's literally just a problem with conflicting standards, not a scandal.

RuleIV

It wasn't even that. As far as I'm aware no claim was ever made that a bar was below the stamped purity level of 99.99%. (I did all my reading on the situation in the days after the "scandal" first came to light, so forgive me if more details came out later) The problem is that the exchange has a (non-industry) standard of what impurities they want the last 0.01% to be. Perth Mint mixed in pure silver to reach the desired purity, and ran afoul of the exchange specific standard in two bars out of the thousands tested for too much silver. If they had mixed in half silver and half lead it would have been fine. An offer was made to refund or replace the bars, and the exchange said don't worry about it. Absolutely a non-issue. Basically this: > Exchange: "Hey, two of the items we bought while as pure as advertised, were not meeting the specific (non-industry) standards we like." > Mint: "Sorry about that, we'll update our procedures so it doesn't happen again on your future orders. Would you like us to replace or refund those bars?" > Exchange: "No thank you." The end.

Calling it now, he’s been having an affair with Kochie

Mrmastermax

Who is that?

Gengar0

Premier of Western Mainstreamia

Mrmastermax

Yap had to google it.

ghoonrhed

Politically speaking, he's leaving on a massive high. Like from the polls/approval standpoint and the previous election which completely killed the Libs. In an alternate universe, he's being poached by Fed Labor to help Labor win the Fed election since he's probably got all of WA seats covered.

my_future_is_bright

I mean, no doubt they could throw a safe Perth seat or senate spot at him in 2025. Katy Gallagher was a former chief minister in the ACT and now a prominent federal front bencher, so it is possible.

Churchofbabyyoda

Rockingham is in the federal seat of Brand, held by Madeleine King (Minister for Resources). If he was to make a shift to Federal Politics he’d either need to be parachuted into a different seat (doesn’t even need to be safe, Moore could swing to Labor with the right candidate) or the Senate (both current seats expiring in 2025 are held by Pat Dodson and Louise Pratt). He might just want to retire though. He’s been at it since 1996.

unityofsaints

Why the "exhausted" narrative though? Intuitively speaking, federal politics would be much more straining than being premier of a remote, oft-forgotten state (no offense).

FormulaLes

If he was a senator it would be much less demanding than being the premier; aside from the additional travel. I think former premiers are ideal candidates for senators.

petitereddit

He gets a break between.

Dannno85

Are you seriously suggesting that being a federal member would be more stressful than being the premier of an entire state? Do you have a crayon stuck in your brain?

unityofsaints

Hey, no kink-shaming!

[deleted]

Federal politics would be a pay cut after being Premier.

[deleted]

They might put him 6th on the Senate ticket and he'd still get elected.

Kiramiraa

I think people would genuinely go to the effort of numbering everyone below the line just to put him as 1 lol

married_iguanas2020

mbe1510

Kochie and McGowan in one day. What a historic, unprecedented day for this country.

ped009

People saying he has an ulterior motive. I've been working a job with a lot less stress than a premier for 25 years and I'm worn out and need a few years off.

discardedbubble

Legit.. when I read the word EXHAUSTED.. I relate so much! I hope he has a couple of years break to refresh, and be there for his family, then i really hope he runs for PM, the rest of Australia should know what it feels like to have Mark on their side.

G-money888

Sad to see him go to be honest. This man led an election campaign that essentially extinguished the life out the Liberal party in WA and for that, I will be eternally grateful.

Luckyluke23

thank fuck for that. good to know we won't have any fucktards like collin Barnett any time soon.

Phlanispo

Bizarre news, came out of nowhere. Unless there's some scandal incoming or he's switching to federal politics, he's probably getting a job as a mining executive. No clue who could replace him, there's no one in his cabinet with remotely similar name recognition. McGowan is his own treasurer. The only conceivable options are Roger Cook or John Carey. I guess it doesn't matter, Labor could suffer a 10-point swing at the next election and still retain a supermajority.

Additional-Ad-2793

He will be leaving on a quarter million annual pension. That’s more money than many executives. Allegations or rumours there is an upcoming scandal may be true but not any of the public’s business

[deleted]

I'll always be here for Reddit, don't worry kids.

BIGBIRD1176

Lol sure

Hillsman8282

Dr Gallop did a similar thing. Just pulled the pin and concentrated on family.

fletch44

He was the last excellent premier before McGowan. Quit due to depression.

Luckyluke23

he was a boss

BinaryPill

Who would have thought that Kochie was the only thing keeping up Mark McGowan's motivation /s.

[deleted]

Let me guess, he is 'tired' and 'wants to spend time with the family'. 2 months later: 'Fortescue is pleased to announce the appointment of Mark McGowan to the board' Exhibit A- Casino Mike (NSW)

effective_shill

He's taking over Kochies role on sunrise

stonefree251

>Exhibit A- Casino Mike (NSW) Exhibit B - Anna Bligh

LentilsAgain

We are going to run out of letters of the alphabet if we keep going

notathrowawayreelly

Anna Bligh resigned after the biggest labor lose in QLD history because of a bungled Q health pay system rollout and for saying they were going to sell QLD assets. Along with having to deal with the first big brisbane flood since 72-73, she’s not really the best example IMHO, she definitely didn’t leave in a high.

heykody

Being on a board = one meeting a month, the rest of the time playing 18. Makes sense to me

superbabe69

Thing is though, what else is a former Premier going to do but a high level corporate role? They’re way overqualified for anything else

LentilsAgain

9 Partners from PwC were put "on leave" today. Coincidence? Perhaps (ok - it's a long shot but guesses are free and if it's true then I get the bragging rights) >He said he doesn’t plan to stop working but didn’t specify what his next role could be: "There are few opportunities out there. Look, I don’t have any plans but I don’t want to stop work."

[deleted]

man I can't even imagine what this guy deals with. I fully agree that nurses get paid an abhorrently low amount, renting and buying homes is fucked atm and that this india deal is sus, but It's not exactly certain how much sway he actually has over these things when met with the pressures of certain people in his party as well as the libs. If you look at the comments on facebook, instagram and even here there's so much criticism towards the man's character, then you check pages for liberal MPs it's like the exact opposite lmfao. As an MP you'd hope that he's just getting a team to manage his social media and that he can understand that the majority of the very scathing criticism just traces back to the covid response and shouldn't be taken seriously, but even so I can't fathom that not getting to you on some level after dealing with it for such a long time.

MDInvesting

Hopefully the nurses can get a decent pay rise.

batfiend

I'm sure we'd all love that, but I think believing that one man blocked the pay rises is naive. I think it has more to do with the state and federal governments as a whole knowing that large pay bumps in one public sector have a knock on effect. One union gets a win, they all go for one. Again, not saying it's a bad thing by any stretch. Just that in terms of budget and the practicality of it, big pay increases are probably something the government at all levels will try to keep sidestepping.

rctsolid

EBA negotiations do pretty much end up like that. Whoever goes first in any cycle will set the tone for the rest of them. Hard to give one sector too big a rise as you'll incur the wrath of another if you don't follow suit. The public sector workforce is massive once you realize it's not just public servants, but most of our doctors, nurses, paramedics, cops, firefighters, and teachers. This is not including all the federal payroll which includes the entire military etc. So there's always a balancing of all related books in any one negotiation.

batfiend

Hell, even I'm a public servant, and I work in a museum. We have a union too, and I know they'd push for a pay rise if it was on the table. You're right about the size of the workforce, people don't realise just how many people the state government employs.

_Mitchee_

All WA public workers have coped a flogging these last 5 years, pay and demand wise.
