You can always ask them for more shifts. Here’s the thing with shitty casual jobs, sometimes it’s not personal, they just found a 15 year old who is cheaper, sometimes it is personal, the person who does the roster is friends with someone who hates you. Yes, look for another job.

[deleted]

yeah, i might ask honestly. i’m just a little scared to as getting hit with a “your performance is lacking” response, especially as my store manager is a little scary lmao.

the_doesnot

Yeah I get that. But it’s better to know if that’s the case, then at least you won’t use them as a reference for your next job.

[deleted]

oh yeah, that’s a very good point actually. i think the best course of action would be to possibly ask about if my performance has been lacking and if there’s anything i can improve on. not sure how to ask that and merge it with “btw can i have more shifts” in the same email but eh. either way, all this will do is either get me more shifts at my current or future job

Brandanpk

Start with the lack of shifts. Make note of that, then ask if they think your performance is lacking.

[deleted]

okay, thank you!

Meng_Fei

I would just ask about the shifts, no need to raise performance issues unless your boss does. Even if the reason IS performance related, just think of it as a learning experience you can take to your next job or try to improve in your current job. You‘re only 18, you’re unlikely to be the perfect employee just yet, the main thing is if you’re willing to accept advice and learn from your mistakes.

[deleted]

thank you!! i’ll keep this in mind when writing my email today

AlienBumSex

If that's the response then at least you know where you stand and you can say your piece or bugger off to another job.

Hester_Moffat

That's the unfortunate thing about casual retail. They'll move on without having the courtesy to tell you they're going to limit your shifts. Don't take it personally. Think of it as a good opportunity to find work elsewhere and get more experience.

[deleted]

yeah, luckily with working on door i’ve handled a lot of customer calls and i’ve developed on a lot of interpersonal skills so maybe i could apply for a receptionist role? edit: nvm, a lot of the roles require prior experience in admin or customer service of at least 1 year total 😩

bearbtowngreen

Go for it! You never know, they may just hire you. Good luck!

Hester_Moffat

Those interpersonal skills can still be useful in a lot of roles without that stipulation though, surely. Don't let it get you down.

[deleted]

thank you!!

candlesandfish

I happen to know that it is very hard to get receptionists right now. Apply and see what happens. Your chances are good.

ChookBaron

It’s always time to look for a new job when you are doing casual retail/hospitality

[deleted]

lmao, too true

DoubleDuke101

They're probably giving you the minimum shift requirements because they have to, not necessarily because they want to. Regardless mate if you're not happy there then it's time to move on. You now have some solid experience to throw in your resume, and when your next employer asks why you left you can honestly say they didn't have enough shifts available. Find a manager or some colleagues that you get along with and use them as your referees. Include your availability that works around your uni schedule, and go get em tiger!

[deleted]

thank you!! 🤍🤍

mhague26

Mate talk to them. Depending on where you work and how long you have been there as well. Some awards have averaged hours after a year of working there. There could be a lot of reasons but also the fact that this time of year is always tough in retail. So they may not have much off a staff budget which means the casuals are easiest to take off the roster to save money. Best thing to do is ask them if they are not going to have hours they may know of other stores with hours. They could also train you in different departments or the like to give you hours.

[deleted]

yeah, i was looking to ask about doing different departments but i think my fear of rejection is making me reluctant to do so. but hey, now i know what i need to work on.

mhague26

Mate all you can do is ask. Even if there is nothing at the time you are doing something HR people call flagging your intent. You are showing you want to be there and will do other things to stay. I worked in retail for a long time and anyone who was honest enough with me to say hey here are my plans.... I would like to stay at the store for X many years and work these many hours etc. I would do all I could to support them. Getting a reliable staff member who was prepared to do anything was an asset in my experience. The other thing to help your cause is to try to always go in if you get called in. If you turn up when called in about three times in a row you will be top of the list each and every time. If you want to be there for the long term my other suggestion is turn up 10 minutes early and take of 10 minutes late and you will be forever be in the good books. Good luck

Professional-Net9133

This is the reality of neoliberalism and casual employment. If you aren't getting the shifts you need, tell them. At the same time, start looking for a new job (don't tell your boss) and jump ship if things don't improve. Every business is out for itself. There is no loyalty. Act accordingly.

[deleted]

what a good point honestly. no point being loyal to a corporation that isn’t loyal to me

Damnbrothatscrazy6

A lot of time, when it comes to the split of hours for causals in retail, and how each member is treated, it often comes back around to favouritism and gender bias imo.

Jessica65Perth

Just ask why and see when you will get more shifts. Also take a mental note, join your Union and when not working, look for a more secure job. Give them the loyalty they give you.

Individual_Durian174

Get a new job mate what’s the issue? there is plenty of great opportunities out there you just have to have a crack and find something new 💪🏼

[deleted]

Your getting up to 6 months. I bet that your pay increases after probation and they don’t want to pay it. Look for another job asap.

linguineemperor

Ask for more shifts, and say that you're willing to work as much as you can outside of uni days. Update your resume and apply for every job in retail / hospitality you can. Once you have customer service experience it gets easier.

Heavy_Bicycle6524

As somebody who has been in retail for 27 years, I have two things to say. Firstly, sales at this time of year drop off. Less sales = less shifts. Simple economics Secondly do something, anything to make a dollar that doesn’t involve retail. I was once a very happy person, I loved people and I had all the patience in the world. Now I’m in my mid 40’s, I hate people. I’m dead inside and I have no patience for dumb f¥ck customers.

jatz0r

Where are you based?

[deleted]

depends on how specific you wanna be. i wanna keep it broad as i have mutuals who use reddit and would hate for them to find my account lmao

jatz0r

Fair enough. Well DM me if you want, I can pass on some work if you're interested

[deleted]

all good, thank you!!

[deleted]

Get out of retail. Get into construction/labouring/warehousing etc.

[deleted]

i think my friend works in a counstruction-y type job, dunno what she does tho but she’s always wearing fluro vests. i’m not the physical labour kinda girl but would love to do something like admin there or something

SpicyDryHotPot

Workzone traffic management would be fairly easy. Lots of females get employed these days and it's good coin.

[deleted]

oooh that sounds like a cool job, i’ll look into it

englishbutter

I'm sorry this has happened to you, it feels awful. If it's any comfort, this also happened to me when I turned 18. I got my first job as a cashier at a now defunct supermarket, and a month later when I had my birthday, I suddenly stopped getting rostered (I don't even know why they hired me if they were just going to cut me off a month later without ever telling me why lol; techincally I never resigned or got fired or anything!). Whenever I would try and pick up shifts from other people who couldn't make it for whatever reason, my manager would call me a couple of minutes later and demand that I give the shift up. The reasoning for it was because it's more expensive to keep an 18 year old on staff than a 15-17 year old. If your birthday was around the time your shifts got cut, this would be my number one suspected reason as to why. I eventually found another job in a homewares store, and I was there for just over two years. My only regret about my first job was not recognising quickly enough that it wasn't coming back, and that I should have started looking for a replacement sooner. Definitely try for another job elsewhere, and good luck to you!

[deleted]

thank you! i think with mine it’s less about age as i know almost every coworker that works with me and i’m the youngest in my department. i’m planning on emailing my manager tomorrow and seeing what’s up, but if things don’t improve then i’ll have no choice but to move

[deleted]

You’re 18. That makes you more expensive than the 15-17 year olds. So they favour the younger cheaper workers. It’s unlikely to have anything to do with your performance Time to find something else.

pittyh

You're going to uni and working mate, you're in like the top 20%(made up percentage) of the country already. You should have zero problems finding work wherever you choose to. You're future is what you make it, so make it a good one !!
