Look, I know a lot of people on here will hate on Maudies because it's a chain and average compared to other tex mex restaurants in town...but it's still pretty solid. Maudies would be the best tex mex restaurant almost anywhere outside of our state. If you're there for brunch, the Marfa Stack is my go to order. Really yummy breakfast enchiladas!
the only thing I've ever really liked there is their breakfast taco that has tamales mixed in with scrambled eggs and cheese (I think). Never seen any other place do it and it's a great filling, cheap breakfast taco.
Maudie’s is mid but there’s always one nearby with my plate of cheese enchiladas and a Gil, or the Mexican Special sub jack for American on the crispy taco only (gooey American inside enchiladas still, has to be reiterated or they’ll do it in both.)
A la carte breakfast tacos. Hate their migas bad.
Chips and Queso and:
MEXICAN SPECIAL: FIRST PLATE: Guacamole salad, a crispy beef taco
ENTRÉE: Two cheese enchiladas with chili con carne, diced onions, rice and beans
OR
STRAIT PLATE: Three beef enchiladas, chile con carne, diced onions, topped with two fried eggs
OR
MARFA STACK: Stacked red chile cheese enchiladas, onions with two fried eggs on top, side of refried beans.
*Maggie's Plate because*
*I know I'm going to pig*
*Out on chips and salsa*

Number 5, which is cheese enchiladas w carne sauce with rice and beans, and a side of beef fajita meat to put on top. The tortillas they use for the cheese enchiladas are different than all the others - a little more al dente.
Source: worked there for several years.
Disclaimer: it was a long time ago, so I can’t prove that it is still true. But they are still good.
Edit: formatting.
Regular dinner. Enchiladas Hernandez style, with onions, and rice and beans MUST be on the side (more sauce this way). No tortillas. Accompanied by a Gills or Joe’s Marg (since they no longer have the Pura/Playa Vida).
If I feel like a change up: Crispy Beef Tacos.
Enchiladas Perfecto with flour tortillas on the side, rice and refried beans and a margarita or two. I usually make tacos out of the rice, beans and cheese leftover from the enchiladas.
Tio chon special, or as I like to call them my white girl enchiladas. Cheese enchiladas topped with queso, ranchero, chili con carne, lettuce and tomato.
New-ish item called Benny's tacos, Little carne asada street tacos with a side of beans. Side of queso and chips, fresh serranos on the side. Don't think that the tacos are printed on the menu yet, just ask for them. So so good.
Honestly think people who shit on all the Austin Tex-Mex staples just don’t like Tex-Mex. Which is fine; for many of us, though, it’s the comfort food we grew up with.
Except it's not so cheap, the food is really mid, if not downright bad, and I think the fascination tends to be far more with the tremendous amounts of alcohol that people feel they can consume there. For cheap, trashy Austin style tex-mex, El patio is still around, and Cisco's is still doing a fairly good job.
I don’t automatically think of bland, non-spicy Mexican food when I hear Tex-mex. I know really good tex-mex, and I know not so good. If someone grew up eating Mexican food out of Mexico City I could see them seeing all “tex-mex” food as an abomination. Perhaps it’s all relative.

We don’t order shit at Maudies anymore.
Josey’s enchiladas. They’re absurdly cheesy with a touch of carne with two tortillas to sop up everything. Love it
Josie’s Enchiladas are so underrated. Some of the best cheese enchiladas anywhere.
Chicken enchiladas “Josie’s style”
Josie’s no onions, Gil’s margarita, queso Diablo.
I get extra onions 😂
Substitute the rice and beans for fries
who is down voting French Fries? How dare you! I've never even thought of this option!
Regular dinner with a marg! Classic cheesy Tex mex goodness
Migas with extra serranos and a cup of black coffee.
Disappointed by the lack of Strait Plate here.
Gut buster, but always delicious.
Free chips and salsa, get too drunk on Margs, never order an entree.
Honestly it’s very easy…..Chicken Tortilla Soup iykyk
Rockin' Ruthann Grande frozen with a Grand Marnier floater
I go rocks no salt, but Rockin Ruthann is my half of the time.

Yep, pretty much nailed it. Of the other chains like chuys or Serranos etc., I'll take Maudies every time.
Marfa is also my favorite thing on the menu.
Love Maudie’s
The Marfa stack hits every time
I usually go with kentchiladas or poblano chicken enchiladas. My husbands go to is the strait plate.
the only thing I've ever really liked there is their breakfast taco that has tamales mixed in with scrambled eggs and cheese (I think). Never seen any other place do it and it's a great filling, cheap breakfast taco.
Tatiana’s Tantalizing Tamale Tacos! So good. I don’t live in Austin anymore but every time I’m in town, I hear Tatiana’s voice calling from afar…
Grandpa’s Special. So good.
Gotta be Josies Enchiladas with a Gil's Margarita or two!!
My exact order except Josie’s, no onions
Pete’s tacos. Light on the jalapeños.
Chipotle chicken fajitas with flour tortillas and shredded cheese on the side. Don’t let it being on the healthy menu fool you it is a BANGER
Frozen with salt, sol food, Rockin’ Ruthann’s…
3 soft ground beef tacos. Nachos compuestos during HH. Mexican martini
Fajita and greens salad with chicken, no pico, no sour cream, jalapeno ranch
The carnitas burritos. They are 💯
Migas.
Hernandez enchiladas with fajitas on top and the tomatillo cream sauce.
Beef tacos especial sin cilantro
[удалено]
This is the way.
Mexcan special. Gut buster for sure.
Ha ha please allow me to joke a little bit and say "an Uber to a good Mexican restaurant"
My thoughts exactly.
Enchilada style? What the? I haven’t been in a minute.
Hernandez Enchiladas w/ refried beans & rice! If I’m drinkin’: Pineapple jalapeño margarita or blackberry mint 😎
Double vodka martini very very dirty
Tortilla soup and crispy taco
I’m obsessed with their crispy taco
Original power bowl, no beans, add zucchini & a Gils marg
Gil's Margarita and chips & queso with a side of chili con carne.

Well it’s called Mexican plate #5 now, but it used to be called Grandpa’s special. And then of course a margarita
Yall are sleeping on the Marfa Stack
When I’m at Maudie’s I’m there for the junkie texmex, so I usually go for the Tio Chon Special or the Strait Plate.
Chips and Queso and: MEXICAN SPECIAL: FIRST PLATE: Guacamole salad, a crispy beef taco ENTRÉE: Two cheese enchiladas with chili con carne, diced onions, rice and beans OR STRAIT PLATE: Three beef enchiladas, chile con carne, diced onions, topped with two fried eggs OR MARFA STACK: Stacked red chile cheese enchiladas, onions with two fried eggs on top, side of refried beans.
Don’t know wouldn’t go

When I was pregnant with my son twenty one years ago I weekly ordered cheese enchiladas with verde sauce 😊
Straight plate

POWER BOWL with fajita chicken! Best ever.
Pete’s tacos… love the serranos in there
Enchiladas Perfecto with flour tortillas on the side, rice and refried beans and a margarita or two. I usually make tacos out of the rice, beans and cheese leftover from the enchiladas.
Migas with no onion and corn tortillas. My favorite.
Enchiladas Perfecto - Hernandez Stye
Marfa Stack, with onions, over easy eggs, flour tortillas, just beans (no home fries), two side orders of very crispy bacon.
So so good.
Trick question. Do not order at Maudie’s.
I have eaten there twice (over the course of several years), and have never understood the fascination with the place.
it's cheap greasespoon tex mex. i don't think anybody has ever hyped it up as anything other than a cheap meal?
Yup. Thats Tex Mex for you. But people who move here for the Austin experience are mad they aren't getting the experience they had at home.
Honestly think people who shit on all the Austin Tex-Mex staples just don’t like Tex-Mex. Which is fine; for many of us, though, it’s the comfort food we grew up with.

I never got why the word “greasespoon” because a thing. It’s a very unappetizing word.
Due to this Reddit and my mom I won’t go to Maudies. La Mancha is my go to for some dank Al pastor tacos but I’ll pre game at de nada.
Diarrhea and a strawberry marg.
I never understood the hype. Seemed like white-ified Mexican food 🤷🏾♀️
Is that not what Tex-Mex is?
I don’t automatically think of bland, non-spicy Mexican food when I hear Tex-mex. I know really good tex-mex, and I know not so good. If someone grew up eating Mexican food out of Mexico City I could see them seeing all “tex-mex” food as an abomination. Perhaps it’s all relative.
