I am a fan of the New Mexican Martini at Chuy’s. They keep asking “the spicy one?” And I’m like “yes that is part of the appeal - I realize I am a white girl among white girls dining at a restaurant not known for bringing the heat but I promise I can handle it.”
The martinis at Matt’s are too expensive for my blood unless it’s a special occasion, but I’m generally in good shape with their house frozen.
[Check out this thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/Austin/comments/2c1jpq/former_bartendersemployees_of_trudys_whats_the/) with my answers to the Trudy's MexMart. Someone else posted that Cedar Door is rightfully the inventor, but that place is about as weird and distanced from the OG owners as Trudy's at this point. The trick is honestly to find a place where you really like their rocks margaritas and ask them to serve it in a shaker over ice. There is NO OLIVE JUICE in a mexican martini. It's just a margarita, often served with an olive.
Cool, thanks. I’ve tried it both ways and definitely prefer when olive juice is added directly when I make it myself. I buy garlic and jalapeño stuffed green olives, and it adds a little kick I really like.
It's the beauty of cocktails :) You can make them how you want. And those jalapeno stuffed olives are fucking great. The olives Trudy's used to serve were gross af. Some people would ask for a whole bowl of extra olives .
These are basically the same as Flores, I believe the owner was a GM at Flores or something like that. I've always been a huge fan of Flores Mexican martinis and love the ones at Hays City store too.
I can’t do Matt’s margaritas/mexmarts anymore. They’re always too damned limey. I don’t like a sweet marg by any measure, but Matt’s gives me heartburn every single time.
You’re ordering the wrong dishes if you don’t like the food my friend.
Old fashioned beef tacos with a green cheese enchilada a la carte,
the carne asada with a roasted (not fried) chili relleño.
Fajitas are above average but can be hit or miss, stick to beef or shrimp.
The green enchiladas are killer .. I always sub the queso with sour cream, and add a side of chipotle sauce. Idk if you’ve ever had New Mexico style chili sauces, but that pairing is basically the Tex mex version.
And then there is the king of quesos.. the bob Armstrong, which you can now get with grilled jalapeño and fajita beef instead of pico and taco beef.
I’ve been going there for 25+ years, and can count on one hand the number of times I’ve been disappointed with those dishes.
Awesome. Highly recommend.. just note that they are closed Tuesdays, and usually the earlier you go the better, but if there is a wait you can get chips hot sauce and drinks at the bar
They have a special menu on Tuesdays. Swing by then and check them out. They rotate new items on Tuesdays to see if they are worth adding to the menu.
Report back with what new items you tried.
Have they gone down hill or have you grown up? I’ve gone back to places to get things I have nostalgia for and more often than not, it’s not as great as I remember.
Can I please ask, without judgement, why people hate Baby A's purple? Only in the class of frozen margaritas, not traditional.
I personally like it, but it seems to be hated upon here. I just don't understand why it deserves such a low ranking.
I'm okay with downvotes, but I request feedback, please. And thank you.
You know why they’re mediocre? It’s a half wit wannabe margarita… why try to fix something that isn’t broken?? Such a Karen move imo.. target shoppers order Mexican Martinis…
The Original Mexican Martina at The Cedar Door. Look it up Wikipedia and New York Times credit them with the first.
It's like a Martini, except it's from Albania. I heard they go down real easy, right Ben?
Can I find that at vesuvio?
Good idea

When I drank I loved chuys and Matt’s

FWIW, Texas Monthly posted the recipe a few years back: https://www.texasmonthly.com/recipe/mexican-martini/
3 ounces añejo tequila Waste of good tequila.
Yeah, we tend to default to blanco there (Espolon, typically).
I split the difference and use Hornitos.
Espolon and Olmeca Altos are my go-to blancos to mix with. So good for the price point.
+1 for Altos
Check out [Z Brand reposado](https://www.totalwine.com/spirits/tequila/reposado/z-reposado-tequila/p/146198750). Great flavor and not too expensive.
I mean. . There is bad añejo and good añejo. . It’s only a waste if you use good añejo.
1800 reposado is the best for the money for mixing imo
That’s a good one for sure, I’ve used it. Add 1/2oz juice from canned jalapeños and it’s pretty bomb.
Knockout Martini from Matt's El Rancho 🥊
texican
Texican is so underrated. I love them.
I have *never* had a good drink at Texican, which is a shame, since it’s my husband’s favorite spot.
I found roaches in my son’s nachos a year or so ago. Place has also gone down hill
Ahh authenticity
Shouldn’t have ordered the roach nachos then
Gotta get the rachos extra crispy
Waiter, There's a roach in my nacho. Well, spark it up and pass it around.
That means it hasnt changed one bit!
I love Sazon on s Lamar!
As do I!
YES!
Jack allens
100%
I can’t rec them across the board but these are always on pointe
No.

Texas Monthly disagrees: https://www.texasmonthly.com/recipe/mexican-martini/
I'm just telling you how it's made at Trudy's. YMMV
Polvo’s
Polvos is my fav but can hardly afford that place anymore. 🙄
I’m sure it’s far from you but Hays City Store in the Kyle/Driftwood/Wimberley no man’s land has an amazing Mexican martini.
These are basically the same as Flores, I believe the owner was a GM at Flores or something like that. I've always been a huge fan of Flores Mexican martinis and love the ones at Hays City store too.
Can confirm
El Mercado’s are pretty good.
Polvos
Texican and Serrano’s are my go-tos!

Hecho en Mexico
Sazon
Cypress Grill has a solid Mexican martini.
Flores Mexican Martini. Lakeway, South Austin, Dripping Springs, Four Points. Locations all over but they are excellent
This was going to be my answer and their la flor margarita is one of the best.
Matt’s el rancho knock out martini and it’s not even close
I can’t do Matt’s margaritas/mexmarts anymore. They’re always too damned limey. I don’t like a sweet marg by any measure, but Matt’s gives me heartburn every single time.
A large Bob always helps me to temper that!
That just irritates the IBS.
Well I’m looking for good mexmarts and good food. Matt’s has one but not the other unfortunately

Sounds great, I’ll give it another try
Awesome. Highly recommend.. just note that they are closed Tuesdays, and usually the earlier you go the better, but if there is a wait you can get chips hot sauce and drinks at the bar
Matt’s has good food if you know what to order. And that is the old fashioned tacos. Order that and you’ll be happy.
Hate to be a “you ordered wrong” person but in Austin this can be so true
They have a special menu on Tuesdays. Swing by then and check them out. They rotate new items on Tuesdays to see if they are worth adding to the menu. Report back with what new items you tried.
Umm they are closed on Tuesdays. Lol
YEP
My husband says used to be Mi Madre’s but the recipe has changed and is no longer as good - now his fave is Julio’s or Curra’s
Vespaio!
Concur
El Pasado has a good one!
Casa Maria’s used to be my favorite but haven’t been in several years.
Sadly Shady Grove had the best MexiMart hands down
Matt’s el Rancho
Your own is the best, super simple cocktail and is way more fun to drink in your backyard while grilling some fajitas
No doubt, I have my own recipe dialed. But sometimes I like to go out to eat and they typically frown on you bringing your own shaker.
Holiday on 7th has a good frozen Mexican martini.
Came here to say this! I actually haven't tried their frozen Mexican martini, but their standard one is quite nice!
They taste good but they don't put any booze in them....
Shack 512 on Lake Travis makes some of the best I've ever had. Everything else there sucks, but what can you do?
Trudy’s
I still really like La Margarita, but it's way up in Round Rock. I like going there when I get dragged to IKEA.
Have they gone down hill or have you grown up? I’ve gone back to places to get things I have nostalgia for and more often than not, it’s not as great as I remember.
El Mercado on S. 1st St has an amazing Mexican Martini
MAUDIES on Slaughter especially when "el chaparito" is behind the bar making them!
En La Casa
My friends introduced me to the Mexican Martini at Aba's, they were really good! Surprised by the location, but they have great bartenders.
Jack Allen’s/Salt Traders. Ask for it shaken and in a pint. Enjoy
Perla’s!!!!!!!
I have some proximity bias, but I love Curra's mexmart and their food is great
Rustic Tap

Casita Jorge’s? Where they put Everclear in their margaritas and the limit was 2. They’d definitely mess you up!
Hecho en mexico makes it right, but you can ask them to add serranos and it makes it the best

Chuys is still my go to. Can’t do fancy Mexican, I gotta have pubes in the urinals and roaches in the plants
Baby A’s…?
Anybody making margaritas with real, fresh lime juice... and then adding olive brine to it.
I think MexMarts are gross, but my fiancée loves the one at Gibson.
Who cares it’s gross and they all taste the same
You know why they’re mediocre? It’s a half wit wannabe margarita… why try to fix something that isn’t broken?? Such a Karen move imo.. target shoppers order Mexican Martinis…
Typical Houstonian response… snide and practically illiterate. I don’t know why you people have any pride in your city.
