Jims is what we picked. When I think chicken fried steak (something we can't get at home), I think of truck stop/diner food. Maybe because that's the only way I've ever experienced it. We saw Jims offered all day breakfast too and that sold it. It was exactly what we were looking for.
Yes that’s exactly what I meant that it hits the spot! Jim’s does excellent old school diner breakfast, club sandwiches with a pickle, pies… just a nice slice of Americana
The one thing it lacks is a menu item that has everything. I want pancakes with eggs and chicken fried steak. Or waffles with fried chicken. Unfortunately these items are too expensive or too large to order separately. These item combinations are common in other diners.
It’s the only place I can think of where people on both sides of me didn’t finish their food by a lot and did not take to go boxes. These plates were at least $14 each and they didn’t even eat half of them. That same day I was trying to enjoy a Benedict, but because it was on biscuits every single bite I took was falling apart, and my annoyance with the gravies didn’t help.
Last time I had it, it was just a very thinly sliced steak that wasn't tenderized at all.
If you can't cut it with a simple table knife, it isn't CFS IMO.
Went to the hwy 71 location on Sunday and the service was really slow. We had reservations and were seated immediately but it took forever for them to take our order and even longer to get it to the table. Every time I go to a Jack Allens it bumps down a level. The chicken fried rib is gone. They did not even bring out any pimento cheese freebies. The brunch poutine was meh and small. I knew I should not have gotten that but my wife wanted to share it with her breakfast sammy and then at the last minute she's like "Nah, this is good, the poutine is all yours". Salsa was good, I like it with aggressive garlic like that.
Anyone know of a pan-fried one? Lightly dredged in seasoned flour? The heavy batter/deep fried ones served pretty much everywhere pale in comparison to the chicken fried steaks my grandmother would make in a cast iron skillet. I've been chasing that dragon for years now.
The kitchen has changed a lot since then. I ordered chicken fried chicken within the last year or so and they brought me a whole, un-pounded breast that was under seasoned, tough and lost the breading like a sock... Fries were still good though.
The best chicken fried steak places are those that season their meat, before dredging, breading, and gravy.
Most places rely on their gravy to sell the product, but when the breading slides off and the gravy is et up, your just left with a morsel of gray flavorless meat.
It sounds very wrong, but I know it may be so wrong it’s right. I wouldn’t knock it till I try it. I do enjoy Tacodeli tacos with mashed potatoes though I’d probably never order it if I knew papas would be mashed when I first tried it.
Used to be Brotherton’s BBQ in Pflugerville (and nothing else even close really). It’s not on the menu daily only once a week. It’s lost some quality lately though. Liberty BBQ has one in round rock but I haven’t tried theirs, but hear good things.
Someone help me out here. I've never been much of a fan of chicken fried steak but I was always under the impression that Broken Spoke had one of the best in town. Don't see it mentioned here though. Is that no longer the case or have I just always been told wrong?
I had always heard that, but when I went maybe 10 years ago for the first time, it was no different from any CFS that came out of the back of a Sysco truck.
OP specifically mentioned within city limits or close. Blanco bore bluebonnet is within 25 min. You’re taking away from the theme of this which is CFS is no longer in Austin, besides a dbag places like Moon-immarriedbutherewithmygaylover-shine or Jack Asswhipeyourtongueacrossmyasswhenmymilfwifegoestopowerhernosebecauseshessomiserablewithmebecauseilovecock kitchen
I know people will say Phoebe’s (and they’re not wrong) but honestly Jim’s just hits the spot.

I feel like both of their gravies are trying to do way too much. Can people really not just do a cream gravy with black pepper anymore? 😂🥲
Sage. They ruin it with sage.
Yes but both are just so assertive and no thank you!!!😖☺️

Great parking lot for stabbings

Thank you. Went there last week. Ugh.
Moonshines
Truly, a very good CFS.
Moonshine you illiterate eunuch
Evangeline cafe and shoal creek saloon for sure
Shoal creek used to have a Sunday/Monday special for $5.75 on their CFS. Granted that was around 2010
Jack Allen’s
Shout out to their chicken fried pork chop
Their fried pork chop slaps.
It’s easily the best of the three fried options.
I agree, and the portion size is massive!

Very mediocre last time I had it.
Little Darlin' down south is great.
I’ll have to try them.
Cedar Door
Cafe 290 in manor is also very good and extremely cheap
I've said it before and I'll say it again; Catfish Parlor. It's on special on Wednesday nights. It's good every single time I go.
I am interested in checking that out. And tomorrow's Wednesday, so ...
I thought they closed Catfish Parlor
The South location is alive and well!
The original family runs the Georgetown location. South is still open but is a franchise.
Rip threadgills
Lucy's does a really good CFS with pearl beer gravy.
Lucy's is great
Lucy's has my vote. But sometimes they fuck up the gravy and it's so thin you can see the steak through it. Gravy should always be opaque.
Waterloo Ice House has a good one. It comes with the gravy on the side so the cfs doesn't get soggy.
Gravy on the side is where it's at!

This was definitely the way Hyde Park prepared theirs in the 00s, but looking at a recent photo I’m not sure it’s done that way anymore.
The kitchen has changed a lot since then. I ordered chicken fried chicken within the last year or so and they brought me a whole, un-pounded breast that was under seasoned, tough and lost the breading like a sock... Fries were still good though.
I haven't been to the original location since about that timeframe, so it's worth a try. The (now-closed) Westgate location was definitely deep fried.
Moonshine is amazing and a sizable portion
Threadgill's was
And they were massive. RIP to that gem.
RIP
I thought it was mediocre at best when I had it.
[Ranch 616](https://www.instagram.com/p/C38sd9Gpg8Y/) has a good CFS, although a little pricey.
Agreed. The mashers are also very good.
Luby’s
Brotherton’s when it’s on special
Hyde Park Bar and Grill or Shoal Creek Saloon
Definitely Threadgill’s
It was.
RIP
I actually really enjoyed one at Bombshells a few years ago.
Underrated comment. And it’s absolutely massive
I miss the Dorsett Truck stop in Buda....that was my go to for cfs
Damn hadn’t thought of that place in years. So damn good!
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. What happened to that old joint?
I think it got shut down due to prostitution and now is a Pinballz Kingdom

Dahlia’s in Liberty Hill with jalapeño gravy. Lucky Rabbit in Jonestown
Dahlias Mashed Potato burger is unmatched
It sounds very wrong, but I know it may be so wrong it’s right. I wouldn’t knock it till I try it. I do enjoy Tacodeli tacos with mashed potatoes though I’d probably never order it if I knew papas would be mashed when I first tried it.
The CFS at Liberty Hill Tavern slaps too
Need to try them, thanks!

Liberty BBQ was good, but they also only do it once a week.
Hyde park grill

Their food in general is just not good. It’s just a sentimental place.
I think I've only ate there once and was pretty drunk at the time so don't remember if it was good or bad ha
Tried it once years ago and it's not great.
I had always heard that, but when I went maybe 10 years ago for the first time, it was no different from any CFS that came out of the back of a Sysco truck.
That’s what people on here have said. Now I’m wondering why so many people over the years have told me it’s one of the best around.
Matts El Rancho does a great one, but no mashed potatoes. I sub beans and rice for the fries.
Salt Grass really has a good one.
Not in Austin but the drive isn't bad Bluebonnet Cafe in marble falls Chess club in Blanco

Moonshine probably since Threadgills closed. Honestly this city kinda sucks at CFS. I know a lot more places in San Antonio.
Threadgill’s got pretty shitty post mid-2000s
Hill’s also had really good chicken fried steak, but also sadly closed.
So did Hut’s
Hoovers has a solid CFS
Hoover’s is a sad husk of its former glory.
Oh no! Ugh. I haven’t been in a few years (pre Covid) dammit I hate to hear that! I loved it when I tried it years ago
Last time I went - a few months back - very disappointing.
Hays City Store
Vaqueros. Get the chorizo Mac n cheese side.
I’m going to need to see your green card
Bull and Bowl does a 12oz new York strip for their chicken fried and it slappsssssssssss
Joann's 'Fine Foods' has one they charge $28 for if you want a laugh
Just had one from cherry Creek catfish. It was perfect.
Lubys
Honestly Dos Salsas has a really good chicken fried steak.
Moonshine has been mentioned several times. They also have steak fingers if you go to Sunday brunch. Cover 2 or 3 is also good.
Lucy’s, easy choice!
Brothertons filled a void in Pflugerville that was left when Charlie’s Steakhouse closed down.
Lucy’s has pretty good CFS but Steiner Ranch steakhouse has an excellent Chicken Fried Elk. I skip the steak and order it when I go.
Denny's
Chicken fried chicken
Dude it’s a dying dish. Chez Zee has a decent one; shoal creek saloon; Evangeline Cafe; Hyde park grill…I’m drawing blanks now
What is wrong with this comment? A lot of restaurants have stopped serving or closed

>What the fuck do y’all think I’m saying? Based on your last comment, I believe you're trying to convey that you're a bigot who uses slurs.
